  • Fires are the most common disaster and early fire detection is of great importance to minimize the consequent damage. Simple sensors including smoke detectors are widely used for the purpose but they are able to sense fires only at close proximity. Recently, due to the rapid advances of relevant technologies, vision-based fire sensing has attracted growing attention. In this paper, a novel visual sensing technique to automatically detect fire is presented. The proposed technique consists of multiple steps of image processing: pixel-level, block-level, and frame level. At the first step, fire flame pixel candidates are selected based on their color values in YIQ space from the image of a camera which is installed as a vision sensor at a fire scene. At the second step, the dynamic parts of flames are extracted by comparing two consecutive images. These parts are then represented in regularly divided image blocks to reduce pixel-level detection error and simplify following processing. Finally, the temporal change of the detected blocks is analyzed to confirm the spread of fire. The proposed technique was tested using real fire images and it worked quite reliably.

  • Remote sensing division of satellite technology research center (SaTReC) , Korea advanced institute of science and technology (KAIST) has developed a ground receiving and processing system for high resolution satellite images. The developed system will be adapted and operated to receive, process and distributes images acquired from of the second Korean Multi-purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT-2), which will be launched in 2004. This project had initiated to develop and Koreanize the state-of-the-art technologies for the ground receiving system for high resolution remote sensing images, which range from direct ingestion of image data to the distribution of products through precise image correction. During four years development from Dec. 1998 until Aug. 2002, the system had been verified in various ways including real operation of custom-made systems such as a prototype system for SPOT and a commercialized system for KOMPSAT-1. Currently the system is under customization for installation at KOMPSAT-2 ground station. In this paper, we present accomplished work and future work.

  • Recently, the amount of data is increasing with the development of industries and technologies. Research on the processing and transmission of large amounts of data is attracting attention. Therefore, in this paper, compressed sensing was used to reduce the amount of data and its effect on Mask R-CNN algorithm was analyzed. We confirmed that as the compressed sensing rate increases, the amount of data in the image and the resolution decreases. However, it was confirmed that there was no significant degradation in the performance of object detection.

  • A new methodology to detect forest fire burnt scars at near real time using MODIS (Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data is presented here with a goal of introducing a new and improved capability to detect forest fire burnt scars in Thailand. This new technology is expected to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the forest fire tackling resources distribution and management of the country. Using MODIS data in burnt scars detection has two major advantages - high availability of data and high resolution per performance ratio. Results prove the near real time algorithm suitable and working well in order to monitor the forest fire dynamic movement. The algorithm is based on the threshold separated linear equation of burnt and un-burnt. A ground truth experiment confirms the burnt and un-burnt? areas characteristics (temperature and NDVI). A threshold line on a scatter plot of Band I and Band 2 is determined to separate the burnt from un-burnt pixels. The different threshold values of NDVI and temperature use to identify pixels' anomaly, abnormal low NDVI and high temperature. The overlay (superimpose) method is used to verify burnt pixels. Since forest fire is a dynamic phenomenon, MODIS burnt scars information is suiting well to fill in the missing temporal information of LANDSAT for the forest fire control managing strategy in Thailand. This study was conducted in the Huai-Kha-Kaeng (HKK) Wildlife Sanctuary, Thailand

  • In this study, two different technologies which can measure temperature simultaneously at many points are introduced. One is to use a thermal sensor cable that is comprised of addressable thermal sensors connected in parallel within a single cable. The other is to use an optic fiber with Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) system. The difference between two technologies can be summarized as follows. A thermal sensor cable has a concept of 'point sensing' that can measure temperature at accurate position of a thermal sensor. So the accuracy and resolution of temperature measurement are up to the ability of the thermal sensor. Whereas optic fiber sensor has a concept of 'distributed sensing' because temperature is measured by ratio of Stokes and anti-Stokes component intensities of Raman backscatter that is generated when laser pulse travels along an optic fiber. It's resolution is determined by measuring distance, measuring time and spatial resolution. The purpose of this study is that application targets of two temperature measurement techniques are checked in technical and economical phases by examining the strength and weakness of them. Considering the functions and characteristics of two techniques, the thermal sensor cable will be suitable to apply to the assessment of groundwater flow, geothermal distribution and grouting efficiency within 300m distance. It is expected that the optic fiber sensor can be widely utilized at various fields (for example: pipe line inspection, tunnel fire detection, power line monitoring etc.) which need an information of temperature distribution over relatively long distance.

  • Remote sensing sensors used in satellites or aircrafts measure electromagnetic waves passing through the earth's atmosphere, and thus the information on the surface of the earth is affected as it is absorbed or scattered by the earth's atmosphere. Although satellites have different wavelength ranges and resolutions depending on the purpose of onboard sensors, in general, atmospheric correction must be made to remove the influence of the atmosphere in order to accurately measure the spectral signal of an object on the earth's surface. The purpose of atmospheric correction is to remove the atmospheric effect from remote sensing images to determine surface reflectivity values and to derive physical parameters of the surface. Until recently, atmospheric correction algorithms have evolved from image-based empirical methods or indirect methods using in-situ observation data to direct methods that numerically interpret more complex radiative transfer processes. This study analyzes the research records of atmospheric correction algorithms developed over the past 40 years, systematically establishes the current state of atmospheric correction technology and the results of major atmospheric correction algorithms and presents the current status and research trends of related technologies.

  • The applications and concerned technologies of cloud computing services, one of major trends in the information communication technology, are widely progressing and advancing. OpenStack, one of open source cloud computing platforms, is comprised of several service components; using these, it can be possible to build public or private cloud computing service for a given target application. In this study, a remote sensing image analysis processing service on cloud computing environment has designed and implemented as an operational test application in the private cloud computing environment based on OpenStack. The implemented service is divided into instance server, web service, and mobile app. A instance server provides remote sensing image processing and database functions, and the web service works for storage and management of remote sensing image from user sides. The mobile app provides functions for remote sensing images visualization and some requests.

  • LTCC (Low Temperature Cofired Ceramic) technology is one of technologies which can realize SIP (System-In-a-Package). In this paper realization of gas sensor using LTCC technology was described. In the conventional gas sensor structure, wire bonding method is generally used as an interconnection method whereas in the LTCC sensor structure, via was used for the interconnection. As sensing materials, $SnO_2$ was adopted. The effect of frit glass portion on the adhesion of the sensing material to the LTCC substrate and the electrical conductivity of the sensing material were analyzed. AgPd, PdO, Pt was added to the sensing material as an additive for improving the gas sensitivity and electrical conductivity and the effect of the amount of additives in the sensing material on the electrical conductivity was investigated. The effect of the amount of frit glass in the termination on the sensor performance, especially mechanical integrity, was considered and the crack initiation and propagation in the boundary between the sensing material and the termination was studied.
