  • Self-sensing measurement of piezo inkjet and its application are discussed. The pressure wave inside the inkjet dispenser was measured by current measurement due to self-sensing capability of PZT. The pressure wave measured from current was verified by commercially available laser vibrometer. Here, two applications using self-sensing signal were discussed: waveform design for high speed jetting and condition monitoring. For waveform design, two pulse waveform was designed based on self-sensing signal such that the pressure wave after droplet formation can be minimized. For condition monitoring, self-sensing signal was shown to be effective in detecting air bubble trapped in inkjet printhead.

  • This paper is dedicated to studying the quantitative analysis method with remote-sensing data in shallow geological structure reconstruction by the example of TM data in western China. A new method of computing attitude of geological contacts from remote-sensing data is developed and assessed. We generate several geological profiles with remotely derived measurements to constrain the shallow geological structure reconstruction in three dimensions.

A Study on Implementation of the Mobile Application of Aid to Navigation Using Location-based Augmented Reality

  • In this paper, we implemented a mobile application of location-based augmented reality that combines self-sensing technology and various safety information using technological advancements of the smartphone. Vessel navigation is a suitable area for augmented reality because it requires accurate knowledge of the distance and location of destinations, danger zones, AtoN, and adjacent vessels. Current smartphone applications only provide 2D images and location information. Such applications do not include information about the surrounding environment, and as a result, they can only function using their own sensing information and surrounding information into a location-based augmented reality. If you provide a variety of sensor information embedded in the smartphone to 'BadaGO', the implemented application through this study, 'BadaGO' can provide safe navigation information to the user device in real time with a variety of its own formed information. The user has a high practicality and applicability of a small ship that is supplied with safe navigation information in a changing marine environment only by providing information through the application on the smartphone.

CAN WE MEASURE A REMOTE SENSING SCIENCE? BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF THE LITERATURE, 1975-2005

  • Remote sensing science is a rapidly growing field of Earth sciences. Since emergence and to present day, an extensive literature has evolved which traces the wide application of remote sensing in human activities. According to the ISI Web of Science in the 1975-2005 time span more then 20,000 papers were published on remote sensing. The number of papers grew exponentially with doubling period of about 6 years. Notwithstanding all specialized proceedings, there is a lot more remote sensing papers published in a vast list of source titles (up to 350 proceedings). Only 25% of retrieved papers are published in 10 proceedings which ISI assigns to subject category of remote sensing. In 2005 all these proceedings published 1291 articles and received cca 24,000 citations. Average impact factor of the proceedings is equal to 1.181 and average cited half-life is 7.1. It means that an average paper in remote sensing proceedings is cited more then once per year and half of citations the paper receive within the next 7 years after publication. The time line of remote sensing periodicals issued in 1927-1995 shows an exponential growth with doubling period about 15 years. After 1995 there is a prominent deviation from the exponential curve which shows the demand saturation for specialized proceedings. The features revealed are discussed in terms of dynamics and impact of remote sensing in current Earth sciences development.

  • In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for improved accuracy and reliability of Earth Observation Satellite (EOS) data. Most of the data users in the field of remote sensing require understanding of product accuracy and uncertainty. Especially, EOS application products should be validated for practical application in the field. In order to evaluate the availability and applicability of application products, it will be necessary to establish a systematic validation system including techniques, equipments, ground truth data, etc. The Product Validation Site (PVS) for generation and validation of KOMPSAT application products was designed and established with various in-situ equipment and dataset. This paper presents the status of PVS and summarizes some results from experiment studies at PVS.

Application of GML and X3D to 3D Urban Data Modeling: A Practical Approach

  • In this study, two standard specifications such as GML (Geography Markup Language) from OGC (Open Geo-spatial Consortium, Inc.) and X3D (extensible 3D) from Web3D consortium were dealt with for a web-based 3D urban application without using commercialized tools. In the first step of this study, DEM (Digital Elevation Model) and 3D GIS data sets were converted to GML structure with attribute schema. Then, these GML elements were projected onto a common coordinate system, and they were converted to the X3D format for visualization on web browser. In this work, a 3D urban data model, as a simple framework model, is extended to a framework model having further detailed information, depending upon application levels. Conclusively, this study is to demonstrate for practical uses of GML and X3D in 3D urban application and this approach can be applied to other application domains regarding system integrators and data sharing communities on distributed environments.

  • Force/torque sensors are now providing widespread practical solutions to manufacturing problems, particularly in the area of automated assembly. The current state of the industry is discussed, including the evolution of transducer and controller design, and the trend of robot manufacturers to integrate force/torque sensors into their robot systems thereby greatly improving cycle time and simplifying the application development task for the end-user. Current and future application areas are discussed as well as the benefits of force/torque sensing.

  • 원격탐사 센서가 사용하는 파장 영역 중 중적외선 파장 영역대는 국토, 환경, 재해, 군사 등의 폭넓은 분야에서 넓은 응용성을 가진다. 그러나, 중적외선 영역대의 독특한 특성으로 인하여 관련된 기술개발이 크게 발달하지 못한 측면이 있다. 최근 들어 중적외선 원격탐사 기술의 발전은 새로운 연구분야를 제시하고 있으며, 국내외 적으로 다양한 연구 결과가 보고되고 있다. 본 연구는 최근까지 개발된 중적외선 원격탐사 기술에 대한 연구 결과에 대한 문헌 기록을 분석하여 관련 기술의 현황 및 주요 연구 결과를 체계적으로 정립하여 중적외선 원격탐사 기술의 현황 및 연구동향을 제시하였다.

  • Desertification is one of the main global environmental phenomena. It has resulted in deterioration environment and poor economy, and imposed threat to the surviving environment of the overall mankind. Therefore, creating of methods for monitoring and estimate of risk desertification are necessary. Early warning system is one of important ways for monitoring and forecasting of desertification. Remote Sensing and GIS technology are as suitable tools and methods for early warning system. In this aim, we have evaluated of applications of remote sensing and GIS in monitoring and estimating desertification process (case study in Fars Province of Iran). In this research, we have considered erosion and vegetation cover parameters as main factors affecting in desertification process. The result shows that remote sensing and GIS technology could be useful in evaluation of desertification as one method for desertification early warning. Also, Results suggested that erosion and plant cover are affecting in develop the desertification process in study area.

  • Agricultural areas in the north region of Bangladesh suffer from water shortages during the dry season as well as dry spells in the monsoon period. The Teesta Barrage was constructed in 1990 to provide supplemental irrigation water during the monsoon period. After completion of the project high yielding variety of crops were introduced more in the project area. Due to this reason unforeseen needs of irrigation water during the dry season has emerged. This study reviews the current irrigation status and related constraints to a full development of the project and provides suggestions for future improvement of the project. Also suggested is to apply remote sensing technique for the management of the system as a whole. Use of remote sensing technique for the management of irrigation water resources is a new approach in Bangladesh. Application of such a powerful tool will provide better management options for large-scale irrigation projects in the country.
