Buckling of FGM elliptical cylindrical shell under follower lateral pressure

  • A review of previous studies shows that although there is a considerable difference between buckling loads of structures under follower and non-follower lateral loads, only the buckling load of FGM elliptical cylindrical shell under non-follower lateral load was investigated in the literature. This study is the first to obtain the buckling load of elliptical FGM cylindrical shells under follower lateral load and also make a comparison between buckling loads of elliptical FGM cylindrical shells under follower and non-follower lateral loads. Moreover, this research is the first one to derive the load potential function of elliptical cylindrical shell. In this regard, the FGM cylindrical elliptical shell was modeled using the semi-analytical finite strip method and based on the First Shear Deformation Theory (FSDT). The shell is discretized by strip elements aligned in the longitudinal direction. The Lagrangian and harmonic shape functions were considered in the circumference and longitudinal directions, respectively. The buckling pressure of the shell under follower and non-follower lateral loads was obtained from eigenvalue problem. The results obtained from the model were compared with those presented in the literature to evaluate the validity of the model. A comparison index was defined to compare the buckling loads of the shell under follower and non-follower lateral load. A parametric study was carried out to investigate the effects of material properties and shell geometry characteristics on the comparison index. For the elliptical cylindrical shells with length-to-radius ratio greater than 16 and major-to-minor axis ratio greater than 0.6, the comparison index reaches to more than 20 percent which is significant. Moreover, the maximum difference is about 30 percent in some cases. The results obtained from the parametric study indicate that the buckling load of long elliptical cylindrical shell under non-follower load is not reliable.

백두대간 관리범위 설정에 관한 연구(II) - 준산악형 구간을 대상으로 - (Establishing the Managerial Boundary of the Baekdu-daegan(II) - In the Case of Semi-mountainous District -)

  • 백두대간은 국토의 근간이자 중요한 생태축이다. 그러나 최근 백두대간 지역을 대상으로 한 각종 개발요구가 증가함에 따라 이에 적절히 대응하기 위한 보전 전략 수립과 체계적인 관리의 필요성이 부각되고 있다. 이 연구는 백두대간 지역을 효율적으로 보호하기 위한 관리구역 설정을 제안하고자 수행하였다. 접근 방법은 백두대간의 적절한 관리범위 설정을 위해 수계 및 유역을 바탕으로 인간 간섭의 영향정도를 파악하는 것으로, 수치지도, Landsat TM 영상 등이 사용되었다. 준산악지형의 특성을 갖는 남덕유산~소사고개 구간을 대상으로 유역확장방식을 사용하여 유역차수에 따른 경작지, 도시, 나지, 수계, 산림 등의 토지이용상태의 변화를 추적하였다. 그 결과 유역확장방식은 백두대간 관리범위 설정기법으로 효율적이었으며, 관리범위는 마루금을 중심으로 무주(8차)와 거창(5차) 방향이 상이하게 설정되었다.

제주해협 HFR 자료의 유효 범위 산정과 M2 조류 특성 분석 (Estimation of Effective Range of HFR Data and Analysis of M2 Tidal Current Characteristics in the Jeju Strait)

  • The effective range of surface current data observed by high-frequency radar (HFR) operated in the northern coastal area of Jeju Island by Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology was estimated and the distribution and variability of the M2 tidal current of the Jeju Strait was analyzed. To evaluate the HFR data, the M2 tidal current corrected from 25 hours current data observed by the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency (KHOA) was compared with the M2 tidal current in the Jeju Strait analyzed from the surface currents of HFR. The reliability of HFR data was confirmed by analyzing the characteristics of the tide components of these two data sets, and the effective range of HFR data was estimated through temporal and spatial analysis. The observation periods of HFR used in the analysis were from 2012 to 2014, and it was confirmed that there is a difference in the effective range of HFR data according to the observation time. During the analysis periods, the difference between the M2 current ellipses from the data of KHOA and the HFR was greater in the eastern than in the western part of the Jeju Strait, and represented a high reliability in the western and central parts of the Jeju Strait. The tidal current of the Jeju Strait analyzed using the HFR data revealed a seasonal variability a relatively weak in summer and a strong in winter, about a 17% fluctuations between the summer and winter based on the length of the semi-major axis of tidal ellipse. Appraisals and results of regarding the characteristics and seasonal variability of the M2 tidal current in the Jeju Strait using HFR data have not been previously reported, so the results of this study are considered meaningful.

SEARCH FOR EXOPLANETS AROUND NORTHERN CIRCUMPOLAR STARS III. LONG-PERIOD RADIAL VELOCITY VARIATIONS IN HD 18438 AND HD 158996

  • Detecting exoplanets around giant stars sheds light on the later-stage evolution of planetary systems. We observed the M giant HD 18438 and the K giant HD 158996 as part of a Search for Exoplanets around Northern circumpolar Stars (SENS) and obtained 38 and 24 spectra from 2010 to 2017 using the high-resolution Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) at the 1.8m telescope of Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory in Korea. We obtained precise RV measurements from the spectra and found long-period radial velocity (RV) variations with period 719.0 days for HD 18438 and 820.2 days for HD 158996. We checked the chromospheric activities using Ca $\text\tiny{II}$ H and $H{\alpha}$ lines, HIPPARCOS photometry and line bisectors to identify the origin of the observed RV variations. In the case of HD 18438, we conclude that the observed RV variations with period 719.0 days are likely to be caused by the pulsations because the periods of HIPPARCOS photometric and $H{\alpha}$ EW variations for HD 18438 are similar to that of RV variations in Lomb-Scargle periodogram, and there are no correlations between bisectors and RV measurements. In the case of HD 158996, on the other hand, we did not find any similarity in the respective periodograms nor any correlation between RV variations and line bisector variations. In addition, the probability that the real rotational period can be as longer than the RV period for HD 158996 is only about 4.3%. Thus we conclude that observed RV variations with a period of 820.2 days of HD 158996 are caused by a planetary companion, which has the minimum mass of 14.0 $M_{Jup}$, the semi-major axis of 2.1 AU, and eccentricity of 0.13 assuming the stellar mass of $1.8 M_{\odot}$. HD 158996 is so far one of the brightest and largest stars to harbor an exoplanet candidate.

동시베리아해 비구형 망가니즈단괴의 특성 (Characteristics of Non-Spherical Manganese Nodule from the East Siberian Sea)

  • 유라시아 대륙 주변부 북극해의 천해에서도 태평양이나 인도양의 심해저에서와 같이 많은 망가니즈단괴가 발견되고 있지만, 이에 관한 자세한 연구는 많이 수행되고 있지 않다. 아라온호의 북극해 탐사를 통하여 동시베리아해에서 채취한 망가니즈단괴는 Mn/Fe 비가 매우 높아 Mn 자원으로서의 가능성이 매우 크다. 이번 연구에서는 북극 동시베리아해에서 산출되는 망가니즈단괴 중 약 7%를 차지하는 비구형 단괴를 외부형태에 따라 구분하고, 크기와 무게, 내부조직을 관찰하였으며, X선회절분석 그래프의 피크 면적비를 이용한 산화망가니즈광물의 반정량 분석과 지화학분석을 실시하여, 그 결과를 구형 단괴와 비교하였다. 비구형 망가니즈단괴는 외부형태에 따라 5가지로 구분되며, 타원체형, 판상형과 불규칙형이 대부분을 차지하며, 장경과 무게는 비례하는 경향이 있다. 비구형 단괴는 모두 핵을 가지며, 핵 성분은 이질 퇴적물이 주를 이룬다. 산화망 가니즈광물의 평균 함량은 버네사이트, 부서라이트, 토도로카이트 순으로 감소하며, 함량비는 외부형태, 내부조직이나 핵 성분과는 상관관계가 없지만, 단괴의 내부에서 외부로 갈수록 토도로카이트와 부서라이트는 감소하고, 버네사이트가 증가하는 경향이 있다. 북극해의 다른 천해는 물론 태평양이나 인도양의 심해저의 단괴에 비하여 Mn 함량이 많고, Mn/Fe 비가 높다. 비구형 단괴는 구형 단괴에 비하여 크기가 크고 무겁고, Mn 함량이 적고 Mn/Fe 비는 낮지만, 광물조성이나 내부조직에서는 큰 차이가 없다. 동시베리아해에서 채취된 모든 망간단괴는 Mn/Fe 비가 5 이상으로 높으므로 대부분 속성작용에 의하여 형성된 것으로 여겨진다.
