The composite frame system suggested in this paper consists of steel reinforced concrete beam encased with structural tee and precast concrete column. This system has advantages such as reduction of materials, CO2 emissions and waste. To commercialize the new composite frame system, it is necessary to develop connections that can effectively connect each member. Therefore, a hybrid connection that has steel type connection and reinforced concrete together is utilized to connect easily at the composite frame system. To evaluate the structural performance of the composite frame system, an experimental investigation is presented. In this study, the flexural moment capacity of the composite frame was determined using the strain compatibility approach. The strain compatibility approach can be used to predict the flexural moment capacity at each limit state. As a result, all elements of the beam to column connection are represented to fully interact between each other. The specimens show errors of -1.9% in the yield limit state and 0.9% at the maximum load limit state. Also, testing shows that beam to column connections have characteristics of semi-rigid connection as per Eurocode 3.

A series of connection tests of portal frames which were composed of cold-formed steel studs and rafters was carried out to study the moment-rotation relation, the rotational rigidity, and the yield and the ultimate moment of the connections. The main factors of the tests were the thickness, the shape of the connecting members which were made of mild steel, and the torsional restraints of the test specimens. The test results were compared with those obtained through the non-linear analysis, for verification. The secant stiffness estimated from the experimental moment-rotation curve was proposed for the rotational rigidity of semi-rigid connections, and its validity was verified in the structural frame analysis.
Recently, many studies on connections in steel structures have been performed. In practice, designers assume that the connection is a rigid- or pinned-one, however, actually the connection behaves as partially restrained one, neither fully restrained nor unrestrained. This paper concentrates on the behavior of double angle connections in the field of semi-rigid connections. The behavior of double angle connection. induced by abrupt axial tension load or by collapsed brace in medium or low rise building, is analyzed by 3D nonlinear finite element method using ABAQUS(ver 5.8). From the analytic results. a simplified model of double angle and a rotational stiffness at the corner of the angle are derived, which are fundamentally used for understanding the behavior of the double angle connection.
This study presents algorithms for determining the fuzzy critical loads of planar steel frame structures with fixity factors of beam - column and column - base connections are modeled as triangular fuzzy numbers. The finite element method with linear elastic semi-rigid connection and Response Surface Method (RSM) in mathematical statistic are applied for problems with symmetric triangular fuzzy numbers. The ${\alpha}$ - level optimization using the Differential Evolution (DE) involving integrated finite element modeling is proposed to apply for problems with any triangular fuzzy numbers. The advantage of the proposed methodologies is demonstrated through some example problems relating to for the twenty - story, four - bay planar steel frames.
The structural methodology in designing a transmission tower have been performed to assume a simple truss behavior. But there're quite differences between a simple truss behavior and a real one. A suitable explanation for a structural stability can be expressed as a semi-rigid connection instead of the assumed hinged connection. This study proposes an alternative structural analysis modelling strategy for the transmission tower design. Proposed element models are truss element model, beam element model, and combined beam-truss element model. The static finite element analysis shows that there's a moment distribution between a mainpost member and the other bracing member.
Compared with the traditional RC system, precast stairs can save construction time, reduce the cost of concrete casting, etc. This paper focuses on an investigation of improved continuous longitudinal joint details for PC stair systems. The performance of the precast concrete stair connections subjected to displacement control cyclic loading is compared with that of the monolithic connection. The developed connection is composed of U-rods and clamp joint metals. This paper proposes precast stair connection with improved structural performance and experimentally evaluates the structural performance of the proposed joints in terms of maximum load, displacement ductiliy, strain, crack and failure modes.
This article provides a discussion of the mathematic modeling of connections for designing and qualifying structures, systems, and components subject to monotonic or cyclic loading. To characterize the force-deformation behavior of connections under monotonic loading, a review of the Ramberg-Osgood, Richard-Abbott, and Menegotto-Pinto models is conducted, and it is shown that these nonlinear functions can be mathematically derived by scaling up or down a linear force-deformation function. A generalized four-parameter model for simulating connection behavior is investigated to facilitate nonlinear regression analysis. In order to perform seismic analysis of frameworks, a hysteretic model accounting for loading, unloading, and reloading is described using the established monotonic model. For preliminary analysis, a method is provided to quickly determine the model parameters that fit approximately with the observed data. To reach more accurate values of the parameters, the methods of nonlinear regression analysis are investigated and the modified Levenberg-Marquardt and separable nonlinear least-square algorithms are applied in determining the model parameters. Example case studies illustrate the procedure for the computation through the use of experimental/analytical data taken form the literature. Transformation of connection curves from the three-parameter model to the four-parameter model for structural analysis is conducted based on the modeling of connections subject to fire.
To make direct comparisons regarding the cyclic behavior of thin steel plate shear walls (TSPSWs) with different infill-to-boundary frame connections, two TSPSWs were tested under quasi-static conditions, one having the infill plate attached to the boundary frame members on all edges and the other having the infill plate connected only to the beams. Also, the bare frame that was used in the TSPSW specimens was tested to provide data for the calibration of numerical models. The connection of infill plates to surrounding frames was achieved through the use of self-drilling screws to fish plates that were welded to the frame members. The behavior of TSPSW specimens are compared and discussed with emphasis on the characteristics important in seismic response, including the initial stiffness, ultimate strength and deformation modes observed during the tests. It is shown that TSPSW specimens achieve significant ductility and energy dissipation while the ultimate failure mode resulted from infill plate fracture at the net section of the infill plate-to-boundary frame connection after substantial infill plate yielding. Experimental results are compared to monotonic pushover predictions from computer analysis using strip models and the models are found to be capable of approximating the monotonic behavior of the TSPSW specimens.
Considering the increasing use of tubular profiles in civil construction, this paper highlights the study on the behavior of welded connections between square hollow section column and I-beam, with emphasis on the assessment of the joint stiffness. Firstly, a theoretical analysis of the welded joints has been done focusing on prescriptions of the technical literature for the types of geometries mentioned. Then, a numerical analysis of the proposed joints were performed by the finite element method (FEM) with the software ANSYS 16.0. In this study, two models were evaluated for different parameters, such as the thickness of the cross section of the column and the sizes of cross section of the beams. The first model describes a connection in which one beam is connected to the column in a unique bending plane, while the second model describes a connection of two beams to the column in two bending planes. From the numerical results, the bending moment-rotation ($M-{\varphi}$) curve was plotted in order to determine the resistant bending moment and classify each connection according to its rotational capacity. Furthermore, an equation was established with the aim of estimating the rotational stiffness of welded I beam-to-RHS column connections, which can be used during the structure design. The results show that most of the connections are semi-rigid, highlighting the importance of considering the stiffness of the connections in the structure design.
In this study, a five-story steel frame was designed in accordance with KBC2005 to evaluate the effect of the beam-column connection on the structural behavior. The connections were designed as a fully rigid connection and as a semirigid connection. A fiber model was utilized to describe the moment-curvature relationship of the steel beam and column, and a three-parameter power model was adopted for the moment-rotation angle of the semirigid connection. To evaluate the effects of higher modes on structural behavior, the structure was subjected to a KBC2005-equivalent lateral load and lateral loads considering higher modes. The structure was idealized as a separate 2D frame and as a connected 2D frame. The pushover analysis of 2D frames for the lateral load yielded the top displacement-base shear force, design coefficients such as overstrength factor, ductility ratio, and response modification coefficient, demanded ductility ratio for the semirigid connection, and distribution of plastic hinges. The sample structure showed a greater response modification coefficient than KBC2005, the higher modes were found to have few effects on the coefficient, and the lateral load of KBC2005 was found to be conservative. The TSD connection was estimated to secure economy and safety in the sample structure.
