Semantic object model has widely been recognized as an alternative data modeling approach to entity-relationship model for database system design. In this study, we have presented a semantic object model for intermediary type shopping mall consisting of multiple buyers and sellers. Essential processes and information with regard to the customer management, product management, price estimation, product order etc. have been considered for this study. Upon careful examination and analysis of them, a detailed semantic objects and attributes have been drawn and structured into semantic object diagrams. The final objects were converted into an entity-relationship diagram so that intuitive comparison could be made for relational database design. The results in this study may form a conceptual framework for both academic concerns and more complicated system applications.
Semantic search is known as a series of activities and techniques to improve the search accuracy by clearly understanding users' search intent without big cognitive efforts. Usually, semantic search engines requires ontology and semantic metadata to analyze user queries. However, building a particular ontology and semantic metadata intended for large amounts of data is a very time-consuming and costly task. This is why commercialization practices of semantic search are insufficient. In order to resolve this problem, we propose a novel semantic search method which takes advantage of our previous semantic tensor space model. Since each term is represented as the 2nd-order 'document-by-concept' tensor (i.e., matrix), and each concept as the 2nd-order 'document-by-term' tensor in the model, our proposed semantic search method does not require to build ontology. Nevertheless, through extensive experiments using the OHSUMED document collection and SCOPUS journal abstract data, we show that our proposed method outperforms the vector space model-based search method.

In the Semantic Web, it is possible to provide intelligent information retrieval and automated web services by defining a concept of information resource and representing a semantic relation between resources with meta data and ontology. It is very important to manage semantic data such as ontology and meta data efficiently for implementing essential functions of the Semantic Web. Thus we propose an index structure to support more accurate search results and efficient query processing by considering semantic and structural features of the semantic data. Especially we use a graph data model to express semantic and structural features of the semantic data and process various type of queries by using graph model based path expressions. In this paper the proposed index aims to distinguish our approach from earlier studies and involve the concept of the Semantic Web in its entirety by querying on primarily extracted structural path information and secondary extracted one through semantic inferences with ontology. In the experiments, we show that our approach is more accurate and efficient than the previous approaches and can be applicable to various applications in the Semantic Web.
Location-based services are a recent concept that integrates a mobile device's location with other information in order to provide added value to a user. Although Location-based Services provide users with comfortable information, it is a complex task to manage and share heterogeneous and numerous data in decentralized environments. In this paper, we propose the Semantic LBS Model as one of the solution to resolve the problem. The Semantic LBS Model is a LBS middleware model that includes an ontology-based data model for LBS POI information and its processing mechanism based on Semantic Web technologies. Our model enables POI information to be described and retrieved over various domain-specific ontologies based on our proposed POIDL ontology. This mechanism provide rich expressiveness, interoperability, flexibility in describing and using information about POls, and it can enhance POI retrieval services.

In the initial stages of ship design, designers represent geometry, arrangement, and dimension of hull structures with 2D geometric primitives such as points, lines, arcs, and drawing symbols. However, these design information(‘2D geometric primitives’) defined in the drawing sheet require more intelligent translation processes by the designers in the next design stages. Thus, the loss of design semantics could be occurred and following design processes could be delayed. In the initial design stages, it is not easy to adopt commercial 3D CAD systems, which have been developed f3r being used in detail and production design stages, because the 3D CAD systems require detailed input for geometry definition. In this study, a semantic product model data structure was proposed, and an initial structural CAD system was developed based on the proposed data structure. Contents(‘product model data and design knowledges’) of the proposed data structure are filled with minimal input of the designers, and then 3D solid model and production material information can be automatically generated as occasion demands. Finally, the applicability of the proposed semantic product model data structure and the developed initial structural CAD system was verified through application to deadweight 300,000ton VLCC(Very Large Crude oil Carrier) product modeling procedure.
According to the widespread use of ontology-based applications, it is critical to efficiently store and process semantic information. Even though several related systems have been developed, they have some limitations in perspectives of the volume of target semantic data, the performance of semantic query processing, and the semantic data maintenance. In this paper we propose the OWL-aware relational model for the ontology management system and SQL-based semantic query processing mechanism. Also, to verify the query processing performance, we show that the proposed query professing mechanism is more efficient than sesame.
To construct machining databases, which are reusable and sharable their meanings, semantic metadata management is required. In this study a semantic data modeling process for machining data is developed. It combines conventional data models with ISO/IEC 11179 standard, metadata registry(MDR). Names of object classes and properties constituting data element names are identified using conventional data model while data elements are named and specified based on ISO/IEC 11179 in order to obtain semantic interoperability of data. An experimental application to electrical discharge machining(EDM) is performed to explain the process.

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is one of the three emergency diseases that require urgent diagnosis and treatment in the golden hour. It is important to identify the status of the coronary artery in AMI due to the nature of disease. Therefore, multi-modal medical images, which can effectively show the status of the coronary artery, have been widely used to diagnose AMI. However, the legacy system has provided multi-modal medical images with flat and unstructured data. It has a lack of semantic information between multi-modal images, which are distributed and stored individually. If we can see the status of the coronary artery all at once by integrating the core information extracted from multi-modal medical images, the time for diagnosis and treatment will be reduced. In this paper, we analyze semantic relations between multi-modal medical images based on coronary anatomy for AMI. First, we selected a coronary arteriogram, coronary angiography, and echocardiography as the representative medical images for AMI and extracted semantic features from them, respectively. We then analyzed the semantic relations between them and defined the convergence data model for AMI. As a result, we show that the data model can present core information from multi-modal medical images and enable to diagnose through the united view of AMI intuitively.
As the networks connect the world, enterprises tend to move manufacturing activities into virtual spaces. Since different software applications use different data terminology, it becomes a problem to interoperate, interchange, and manage electronic data among heterogeneous systems. It is said that approximately one billion dollar has been being spent yearly in USA for product data exchange and interoperability. As commercial CAD systems have brought in the concept of design feature for the sake of interoperability, terminologies of design features need to be harmonized. In order to define design feature terminology for integration, knowledge about feature definitions of different CAD systems should be considered. STEP standard have attempted to solve this problem, but it defines only syntactic data representation so that semantic data integration is not possible. This paper proposes a methodology for integrating modeling features of CAD systems. We utilize the ontology concept to build a data model of design features which can be a semantic standard of feature definitions of CAD systems. Using feature ontology, we implement an integrated virtual database and a simple system which searches and edits design features in a semantic way.
Our prediction model is based on the development of "Semantic Location Model." It embodies geometrical and topological information which can increase the efficiency in prediction and make it easy to manipulate the prediction model. Data mining is being implemented to extract the inhabitant's location patterns generated day by day. As a result, the self-learning system will be able to semantically predict the inhabitant's location in advance. This context-aware system brings about the key component of the ubiquitous computing environment. First, we explain the semantic location model and data mining methods. Then the location prediction model for the ubiquitous computing system is described in details. Finally, the prototype system is introduced to demonstrate and evaluate our prediction model.
