  • We report on a simple and robust route to the spontaneous assembly of well-ordered magnetic nanoparticle superstructures by irreversible evaporation of a sessile single droplet of a mixture of a ferrofluid (FF) and a nonmagnetic fluid (NF). The resulting assembled superstructures are seen to form well-packed, vertically arranged columns with diameters of $5{\sim}0.7{\mu}m$, interparticle spacings of $9{\sim}2{\mu}m$, and heights of $1.3{\sim}3{\mu}m$ The assembled superstructures are strongly dependent on both the magnitude of magnetic field and the mixing ratio of the mixture. As the magnitude of the externally applied magnetic field and the mixing ratio of the mixture increase gradually, the size and interspacing of the magnetic nanoparticle aggregations decrease. Without an externally applied magnetic field, featureless patterns are observed for the ${\gamma}-Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticle aggregations. The proposed approach may lead to a versatile, cost-effective, fast, and scalable fabrication process based on the field-induced self-assembly of magnetic nanoparticles.

  • During the last four decades, 16 Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR) and 4 Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR) have been constructed and operated in Korea, and nuclear fuel technology has been developed to a self-reliant state. At first, the PWR fuel design and manufacturing technology was acquired through international cooperation with a foreign partner. Then, the PWR fuel R&D by Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has improved fuel technology to a self-reliant state in terms of fuel elements, which includes a new cladding material, a large-grained $UO_2$ pellet, a high performance spacer grid, a fuel rod performance code, and fuel assembly test facility. The MOX fuel performance analysis code was developed and validated using the in-reactor test data. MOX fuel test rods were fabricated and their irradiation test was completed by an international program. At the same time, the PWR fuel development by Korea Nuclear Fuel (KNF) has produced new fuel assemblies such as PLUS7 and ACE7. During this process, the design and test technology of fuel assemblies was developed to a self-reliant state. The PHWR fuel manufacturing technology was developed and manufacturing facility was set up by KAERI, independently from the foreign technology. Then, the advanced PHWR fuel, CANFLEX(CANDU Flexible Fuelling), was developed, and an irradiation test was completed in a PHWR. The development of the CANFLEX fuel included a new design of fuel rods and bundles.. The nuclear fuel technology in Korea has been steadily developed in many national R&D programs, and this advanced fuel technology is expected to contribute to a worldwide nuclear renaissance that can create solutions to global warming.

  • The synthesis of dendritic dipeptides $(4-3,4-3,5)12G2-CH_{2}-Boc-_{L}-Tyr-X-OMe\;where\;X\;=\;Gly,\;_{L}-Val,\;_{L}-Leu,\;_{L}-Ile,\;_{L}-Phe$, and L-Pro will be discussed. Their self-assembly in bulk and in solution and the structural and retrostructural analysis of their periodic assemblies will be compared to that of the previously reported and currently reinvestigated dendritic dipeptide with $X=_{L}-Ala$. All dendritic dipeptides containing as X nonpolar ${\alpha}-amino$ acids self-assemble into helical porous columns. The principles via which the aliphatic and aromatic substituents of X program the structure of the helical pores indicate synthetic pathways to helical pores with bioinspired functions based on artificial nonpolar ${\alpha}-amino$ acids will be discussed.

  • Molecular self-assembled of surfactant viologen are of recent interest because they can from functional electroeds as well as micellar assemblies. which can be profitably utilized for display devices. photoelectrochemical studies and electrocatalysis as electron acceptor or electron mediator[1-3]. Fromherz et al studied the se1f-assembly of thiol and disulfide derivatives of viologens bearing long n-alkyl chains on Au electrode surface[4]. In this study, the electrochemical behavior of self-assembled viologen monolayer has been investigated with QCM, which has been known as nano-gram order mass detector. The self-assembly process of viologen was monitored using resonant frequency$({\Delta}F)$ and resonant resistance(R). The redox process of viologen was observed with resonant frequency$({\Delta}F)$.

  • A superconducting motor consisting of high temperature superconducting (HTS) rotor and air-core stator is under development in Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute. HTS motor was designed for having the rated power of 100hp at 1800 rpm. HTS field winding is composed of sixteen HTS race track shaped coils wound with stainless steel-reinforced Bi-2223 tape conductor by react and wind fabrication method. Nomex Paper was used for electrical insulation. Each of four magnet pole assemblies was constructed with four double pancake sub-coils, mechanically stacked and electrically in series. Four magnet assemblies were fixed on an aluminum support structure to make effective heat transfer. Critical current (Ic) of HTS field winding was 41A but minimum Ic of sub-coils was 35A at 77K and self field. Joule heat generated in HTS field winding was 2.11W at 77K and 35A.

  • Using computational modeling, we design a pair of biomimetic microcapsules that exploit chemical mechanisms to communicate and alter their local environment. As a result, these synthetic objects can undergo autonomous, directed motion. In the simulations, signaling microcapsules release "agonist" particles, while target microcapsules release "antagonist" particles and the permeabilities of both capsule types depend on the local particle concentration in the surrounding solution. Additionally, the released nanoscopic particles can bind to the underlying substrate and thereby create adhesion gradients that propel the microcapsules to move. Hydrodynamic interactions and the feedback mechanism provided by the dissolved particles are both necessary to achieve the cooperative behavior exhibited by these microcapsules. Our model provides a platform for integrating both the spatial and temporal behavior of assemblies of "artificial cells", and allows us to design a rich variety of structures capable of exhibiting complex dynamics. Due to the cell-like attributes of polymeric microcapsules and polymersomes, material systems are available for realizing our predictions.

  • The spontaneous self-organization of amphiphilic molecules into complex aggregates was undoubtedly an important factor in the emergence of life on earth. We study the parameters governing the self-organization of a simple amphiphilic model system using electron cryomicroscopy of ice-embedded specimens in combination with extensive data analysis. Different stable helices can be generated reproducibly by changing the parameters controlling the molecular aggregation process. The repeating units of the helical aggregates in the micrographs can be found by multivariate statistical image analysis techniques, and these two-dimensional projection images suffice for calculating the three-dimensional density distribution of the fibers. We present a typical structure consisting of a narrow stack of compartmented bilayers twisted into a left-handed helix. Our new techniques directly elucidate the three-dimensional structure of helical assemblies, and can complement or replace diffraction-based approaches.

  • The squeal of drum brakes was investigated numerically and experimentally. Modal testings were performed for shoes, drums, backing plates and their assemblies. In order to predict the squeal phenomena, stability analysis was performed based on a simplified self-excited vibration model. Based on modal testings, the dynamic properties of the brake elements and the parameters used in this analysis were determined. The geometries of shoes and drums were also considered. The result shows that the modification methods of the shoe and the drum design are feasible for noise reduction.
