In this paper, we propose a new architecture of Genetic Algorithms(GAs)-based Self-Organizing Polynomial Neural Networks(SOPNN), discuss a comprehensive design methodology and carry out a series of numeric experiments. The conventional SOPNN is based on the extended Group Method of Data Handling(GMDH) method and utilized the polynomial order (viz. linear, quadratic, and modified quadratic) as well as the number of node inputs fixed (selected in advance by designer) at Polynomial Neurons (or nodes) located in each layer through a growth process of the network. Moreover it does not guarantee that the SOPNN generated through learning has the optimal network architecture. But the proposed GA-based SOPNN enable the architecture to be a structurally more optimized network, and to be much more flexible and preferable neural network than the conventional SOPNN. In order to generate the structurally optimized SOPNN, GA-based design procedure at each stage (layer) of SOPNN leads to the selection of preferred nodes (or PNs) with optimal parameters- such as the number of input variables, input variables, and the order of the polynomial-available within SOPNN. An aggregate performance index with a weighting factor is proposed in order to achieve a sound balance between approximation and generalization (predictive) abilities of the model. A detailed design procedure is discussed in detail. To evaluate the performance of the GA-based SOPNN, the model is experimented with using two time series data (gas furnace and NOx emission process data of gas turbine power plant). A comparative analysis shows that the proposed GA-based SOPNN is model with higher accuracy as well as more superb predictive capability than other intelligent models presented previously.
Occupancy sensors installed in buildings and households turn off the light if the space is vacant. Currently PIR(pyroelectric infra-red) motion sensors have been utilized. Recently, the researches using camera sensors have been carried out in order to overcome the demerit of PIR that cannot detect stationary people. The detection of moving and stationary people is a main functionality of the occupancy sensors. In this paper, we propose an on-line human occupancy tracking method using convolutional neural network (CNN) and self-organizing map. It is well known that a large number of training samples are needed to train the model offline. To solve this problem, we use an untrained model and update the model by collecting training samples online directly from the test sequences. Using videos capurted from an overhead camera, experiments have validated that the proposed method effectively tracks human.

In this paper, we introduce a new topology of Self-Organizing Polynomial Neural Networks (SOPNN) based on genetically optimized Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and discuss its comprehensive design methodology involving mechanisms of genetic optimization. Let us recall that the design of the 'conventional' SOPNN uses the extended Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) technique to exploit polynomials as well as to consider a fixed number of input nodes at polynomial neurons (or nodes) located in each layer. However, this design process does not guarantee that the conventional SOPNN generated through learning results in optimal network architecture. The design procedure applied in the construction of each layer of the SOPNN deals with its structural optimization involving the selection of preferred nodes (or PNs) with specific local characteristics (such as the number of input variables, the order of the polynomials, and input variables) and addresses specific aspects of parametric optimization. An aggregate performance index with a weighting factor is proposed in order to achieve a sound balance between the approximation and generalization (predictive) abilities of the model. To evaluate the performance of the GA-based SOPNN, the model is experimented using pH neutralization process data as well as sewage treatment process data. A comparative analysis indicates that the proposed SOPNN is the model having higher accuracy as well as more superb predictive capability than other intelligent models presented previously.reviously.

In this paper, we propose a new architecture of Self-Organizing Fuzzy Polynomial Neural Networks (SOFPNN) by means of consecutive optimization and also discuss its comprehensive design methodology involving mechanisms of genetic optimization. The network is based on a structurally as well as parametrically optimized fuzzy polynomial neurons (FPNs) conducted with the aid of information granulation and genetic algorithms. In structurally identification of FPN, the design procedure applied in the construction of each layer of a SOFPNN deals with its structural optimization involving the selection of preferred nodes (or FPNs) with specific local characteristics and addresses specific aspects of parametric optimization. In addition, the fuzzy rules used in the networks exploit the notion of information granules defined over system's variables and formed through the process of information granulation. That is, we determine the initial location (apexes) of membership functions and initial values of polynomial function being used in the premised and consequence part of the fuzzy rules respectively. This granulation is realized with the aid of the hard c-menas clustering method (HCM). For the parametric identification, we obtained the effective model that the axes of MFs are identified by GA to reflect characteristic of given data. Especially, the genetically dynamic search method is introduced in the identification of parameter. It helps lead to rapidly optimal convergence over a limited region or a boundary condition. To evaluate the performance of the proposed model, the model is experimented with using two time series data(gas furnace process, nonlinear system data, and NOx process data).

This paper proposes a self-organizing fuzzy modeling which can create a new hyperplane-shaped cluster by applying multiple regression to input/output data with relatively large fuzzy entropy, add the new cluster to fuzzy rule base and adjust parameters of the fuzzy model in repetition. Tn the coarse tuning, weighted recursive least squared algorithm and fuzzy C-regression model clustering are used and in the fine tuning, gradient descent algorithm is used to adjust parameters of the fuzzy model precisely And learning rates are optimized by utilizing meiosis-genetic algorithm. To check the effectiveness and feasibility of the suggested algorithm, four representative examples for system identification are examined and the performance of the identified fuzzy model is demonstrated in comparison with that of the conventional fuzzy models.

The present study compositely applied the self-organizing map (SOM), which is a kind of artificial neural networks (ANNs), and the back propagation algorithm (BPA) for the rainfall-runoff prediction model taking account of the irregular variation of the spatiotemporal distribution of rainfall. To solve the problems from the previous studies on ANNs, such as the overestimation of low flow during the dry season, the underestimation of runoff during the flood season and the persistence phenomenon, in which the predicted values continuously represent the preceding runoffs, we introduced SOM theory for the preprocessing in the prediction model. The theory is known that it has the pattern classification ability. The method proposed in the present research initially includes the classification of the rainfall-runoff relationship using SOM and the construction of the respective models according to the classification by SOM. The individually constructed models used the data corresponding to the respectively classified patterns for the runoff prediction. Consequently, the method proposed in the present study resulted in the better prediction ability of runoff than that of the past research using the usual application of ANNs and, in addition, there were no such problems of the under/over-estimation of runoff and the persistence.

Depending on the type of Tx-Rx pairs, VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) for maritime communication is expected to employ the different frequency channels. Load imbalance between the different channels turns out to be a critical problem for the multi-hop communication using Ad-hoc Self-Organizing TDMA (ASO-TDMA) MAC protocol, which has been proposed to provide the connectivity between land station and remote ship stations. In order to handle the inter-channel load imbalance problem, we consider a model of the stochastic geomety in this paper. After analyzing the spatial reuse efficiency in each hop region by the given model, we show that the resource utility can be maximized by balancing the inter-channel traffic load with optimal resource allocation in each hop region.

The study is concerned with an approach to the design of new architectures of fuzzy neural networks and the discussion of comprehensive design methodology supporting their development. We propose an Adaptive Fuzzy Polynomial Neural Networks(APFNN) based on Fuzzy Neural Networks(FNN) and Self-organizing Networks(SON) for model identification of complex and nonlinear systems. The proposed AFPNN is generated from the mutually combined structure of both FNN and SON. The one and the other are considered as the premise and the consequence part of AFPNN, respectively. As the premise structure of AFPNN, FNN uses both the simplified fuzzy inference and error back-propagation teaming rule. The parameters of FNN are refined(optimized) using genetic algorithms(GAs). As the consequence structure of AFPNN, SON is realized by a polynomial type of mapping(linear, quadratic and modified quadratic) between input and output variables. In this study, we introduce two kinds of AFPNN architectures, namely the basic and the modified one. The basic and the modified architectures depend on the number of input variables and the order of polynomial in each layer of consequence structure. Owing to the specific features of two combined architectures, it is possible to consider the nonlinear characteristics of process system and to obtain the better output performance with superb predictive ability. The availability and feasibility of the AFPNN are discussed and illustrated with the aid of two representative numerical examples. The results show that the proposed AFPNN can produce the model with higher accuracy and predictive ability than any other method presented previously.

In this paper, we propose the design procedure of advance Polynomial Neural Networks(PNN) architecture for optimal model identification of complex and nonlinear system. The proposed PNN architecture is presented as the generic and advanced type. The essence of the design procedure dwells on the Group Method of Data Handling(GMDH). PNN is a flexible neural architecture whose structure is developed through learning. In particular, the number of layers of the PNN is not fixed in advance but is generated in a dynamic way. In this sense, PNN is a self-organizing network. With the aid of three representative numerical examples, compari-sons show that the proposed advanced PNN algorithm can produce the model with higher accuracy than previous other works. And performance index related to approximation and generalization capabilities of model is evaluated and also discussed.

In this paper, we propose a method to analyze the clusters of RF threats emitting electrical signals based on collected signal variables in integrated electronic warfare environments. We first analyze the signal variables collected by an electronic warfare receiver, and construct a model based on variables showing the properties of threats. To visualize the distribution of RF threats and reversely identify them, we use k-means clustering algorithm and self-organizing map (SOM) algorithm, which are belonging to unsupervised learning techniques. Through the resulting model compiled by k-means clustering and SOM algorithms, the RF threats can be classified into one of the distribution of RF threats. In an experiment, we measure the accuracy of classification results using the algorithms, and verify the resulting model that could be used to visually recognize the distribution of RF threats.
