  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop an Empowerment Education Program (EEP) for kidney transplant patients and to test the program's effects on uncertainty, self-care ability, and compliance. Methods: The research was conducted using a nonequivalent control group with a pretest-posttest design. The participants were 53 outpatients (experimental group: 25, control group: 28) who were receiving hospital treatment after kidney transplants. After the pre-test, patients in the experimental group underwent a weekly EEP for six weeks. The post-test was conducted immediately after, and four weeks after the program's completion in the same manner as the pre-test. For the control group, we conducted a post-test six and ten weeks after the pre-test, without and program intervention. A repeated measure ANOVA was performed to compare the change scores on main outcomes. Results: Uncertainty was significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group, both immediately after (t=-3.84, p=<.001) and 4 weeks after (t=-4.51 p=<.001) the program, whereas self-care ability (t=5.81, p=<.001), (t=5.84, p=<.001) and compliance (t=5.07, p=<.001), (t=5.45, p=<.001) were significantly higher. Conclusion: Kidney transplant patients who underwent an EEP showed a decrease in uncertainty and an improvement in self-care ability and compliance. Thus, our findings confirmed that an EEP can be an independent intervention method for improving and maintaining the health of kidney transplant patients.

  • The aim of the present study was to analyze the elements of young children's leadership which is influenced by socio-demographic variable elements, mother's parental attitude and the ability of children' self-regulation with subjects of 435 five-year-old children and their mothers. Results showed that there was a difference in children's total leadership according to the gender. Regarding differences of mother's rearing attitude, boys showed higher self-control and leadership than girls. In differences of self-regulation and leadership, girls had a higher ability of self-regulation and leadership than boys. For birth order, parents who had more than 2 children show higher Control enemy rearing attitude. Regarding mother's employment, a working mother had freer rearing attitudes. Regarding a mother's educational background, there were differences of groups among rearing attitudes. In differences of family monthly income, there were differences regarding AE static rearing attitudes, autonomous parenting attitudes and get-up-and-go of leadership. Secondly, as a result of the relationship among mother's rearing attitudes had a static correlation between autonomous parenting attitudes and control enemy rearing attitudes. Thirdly, the children's leadership is high when the family income is high, mother's rearing attitude is free and children's ability of self-control is high.

  • This study conducted to investigate the effects of Peer-Assisted Learning(PAL) applied to nursing education on self-directed learning ability, academic self-efficacy, and academic achievement of nursing students. The research design was a pre-post-post design with an inequality control group, and a total of 229 students from G University who agreed to participate in the study were included. After the completion of regular classes, the experimental group(N=117) was given a PAL program at least once a week for 10 weeks, and the control group(N=112) was given individual self-learning for 10 weeks. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, X2-test, and independent t-test using SPSS/WIN 21.0. As a result, self-directed learning ability(t=6.50, p<.001), academic self-efficacy(t=2.01, p=.046), and academic achievement(t=4.98, p<.001) were higher in the experimental group than in the control group. As the positive effect of peer learning on nursing students was confirmed through the results of this study, it can be used as useful basic data when designing extracurricular activities for nursing education.

  • Purpose: This study investigated the effectiveness of simulation training with a hybrid model of student nurses' performance ability and reported self confidence. Methods: A nonequivalent control group with pre-posttest was designed. Data collection was done during the first semester in 2012 at a college of nursing in Seoul. Nursing performance ability and reported self confidence related to taking care of patients with urinary problems were evaluated. The treatment group (n=96) received simulation training of a catheterization procedure with a hybrid model involving standardized patients and a mannequin. Nursing students in the comparison group (n=84) did not receive the simulation training but would receive it prior to their next clinical practicum's. Results: The treatment group showed a significantly higher performance ability and reported self confidence than that of the comparison group. The perceived helpfulness and contentment of the simulation training in experimental group was high. Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrated that simulation with a hybrid model was effective in teaching skills prior to the clinical experience which suggests that skill development is not dependent on the actual clinical situation. Nurse educators should consider simulation training as a tool beyond that of clinical practicum.

  • This study examined the difference for the ability of self-directed learning and information literacy(the ability to use information) between small group-cooperative instruction of ICT practical environment and explanatory instruction using ICT of general classroom in middle school science education. The 138 students(7th grade) participated in this study were classified in two group, experimental group(68) and controlled group(70). Experimental small group consisted of 5-6 students who had different levels and the ability of each the group was equal. The teaching of experimental group was made in the science lab which was equipped with computers to connect super high-speed Internet. The teaching of control group was made in general classroom. Under these two environment, this study was executed during 10 weeks. As the result, Small group-cooperative learning using ICT was more effective in diminishing the gap of information literacy in middle school students. And in the ability of self-directed learning, the small group learning using ICT was also more effective than general classroom instruction.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of online practicum based on action learning on self-directed learning ability, academic self-efficacy, and cooperation ability of nursing students. Similar experimental study of single group pre-post test design was used to investigate the effects of this online class. A total of 47 nursing students who were junior grade from one college participated in this study and self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Data were analyzed by frequencies, paired t test using the SPSS/Window 21.0 program. The result of this study showed that the improvement after online practicum based on action learning was significant in self-directed learning ability(t=3.832, p<.001), academic self-efficacy(t=4.258, p<.001), and cooperation ability(t=3.853, p<.001). These findings imply the value of online practicum based on action learning to enhance competency of nursing students. In the future, more studies should be conducted in the same group including control group and blended learning method using action learning to validate the effectiveness.
