  • The purpose of this study was to investigate whether internal control, autonomous motivation of middle school students, and perceived parental pressure on academic performance affect academic procrastination, while verifying the moderating roles of autonomous motivation and parental pressure on academic performance. The participants were a total of 371 middle school students. Academic procrastination, internal control, autonomous motivation, and parental pressure on academic performance were measured using the Procrastination Inventory (Aitken, 1982) revised by Jeon and Park (2014), the Internal-External Control Scale (Ko, 2014), the Academic Self-Regulation Questionnaire (Ryan & Connell, 1989) revised by Kim (2002), and the Scale of Kang (2003), respectively. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and a Process Macro Model 2 (multiple additional modulation effect). The results of the study are summarized as follows. First, middle school students' internal control, autonomous motivation, and perceived parental pressure on academic performance directly affected the students's academic procrastination. Second, the moderating role of parental pressure on academic performance was significant. On the other hand, the moderating role of autonomous motivation was not significant. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that in order to reduce and prevent academic procrastination it is important to improve internal control by helping middle school students become confident enough to believe that they have the ability to change their behavior and achieve their aims. At the same time, parents need to be interested in the process rather than only the academic performance of their children and support their autonomy.

  • The modern society as a high-level information-oriented society lays a great emphasis on lifelong education. It emphasizes all the learners' creative learning ability and various teaching-learning methods as well. We need the self-directed learning to meet these requirements, and one of the solutions is the self-directed teaching-learning process employing the web. Though many educators, so far, developed a number of teaching materials, they are no more than web-based teaching materials for simple learning activities or simple item-bank systems. So, this paper suggests an problem-solving based and self-directed learning system on web in order to overcome such simplicities, and it shows design and implementation of the system. Suggested learning system enables learners to get thinking skill though self-directed control of learning level after they learn the basic concepts and principles on the web as self-directed learning. For example, the system was applied to mathematics education for a middle school students. It supports a test of questions chosen from the item bank in a self-directed way, and helps learners to understand their learning levels for themselves and to solve their questions through on-line discussions with their instructor. The system can also be helpful in improving the learners' learning effects by sharing mutual information through the data room or the Q&A between learners and learners or between learners and instructors.

  • Today, obesity is not recognized as a disease itself but is known to be the indirect cause of much chronic illness. Obesity has an impact on psychological disorders including severe inferiority, damage of body self-image, low self-esteem, personality disorders. The results in an increase of the mortality rate. Therefore, this study attempts to discover and evaluate stressful experience in obese teenagers. For this study, 21 girl students and 19 boy students in Pusan middle or high school located were selected. The data were collected from March to May at 1999. A tape-recorder was used under the permission of the subjects to prevent the loss of spoken information and communication. This study consisted of 563 reponses from girls and 461 responses from boys which were then classified with descriptive expressions and priority classifications. The results generated 72 common elements in girls and 54 common elements in boys. From these elements 24 syntheses of hypothetical definitions and 8 identifications of the structural definitions in both girls and boys were developed. The structural and hypothetical definitions were as follows: The analysis of the data was made through a phenomenological analytic method suggested by Van kamm, which is as follows: 1. Maladjustment to school life; lack of understanding of the teacher, insufficient exercise ability, and a feeling of burden in attending the school obesity program. 2. Conflict in family relationships; lack of understanding from the family, a feeling of alienation. 3. Conflict in friend relationships; lack of understanding among friends, constant comparisons in appearance and body with friends (in girls) and estrangement from friends (in boys). 4. Conflict in acquaintance of the opposite sex; hoping to meet the opposite sex, lack of understanding of boy friends (in girls), feelings of pain, feelings of anxiety (in girls) feelings of burden (in girls) feelings of envy (in boys). 5. Negative body image: shape of body; feelings of pain; feelings of powerlessness; feelings of discomfort, and reception; emotional disorders (in boys), and change of personality (in boys). 6. Health disorder: Physical and psychological discomfort. 7. Feelings of burden in weight control; negative experiences in weight control, interference with family and friends, the difficulty in diet therapy, feelings of burden in exercise (in girls), to be teased by the public through mass media (in boys).

  • Purpose : This research is aimed at developing a substantive theory related to the experience of adjustmented hemodialysis patients by identifying and analyzing the nature, process, and types of adjustment experienced by them. For this purpose, this study takes a grounded theory approach. Method : Data were collected from April, 2002 through September, 2002 through in-depth interviews and close observations of eleven hemodialysis patients who have experienced adjustment. With their consent, the interviews were recorded by audio tapes and later transcribed. Observation memos were also prepared on the subjects' behavior during the interviews. Data collection continued until saturated. The data were analyzed into concepts, subcategories, and categories with the open coding process. The axial coding was done to identify the relationships of the concepts and categories. And the selective coding was done to develop a core category, which is the central phenomenon of the hemodialysis patients who experienced adjustment. Result : This process resulted in 88 concepts, which may be grouped into 24 subcategories and 6 core categories. The 6 categories, in fact, depict the process of changes the patients experience from the sense of crisis, self-control, new life meaning, support system, coping ability, and quality of life improvement. And its core is self-control, which encompasses the dynamic stages from recognition, change attempts, belief solidification, and empowerment. Conclusion : The results of the research offer the following implications. First, research on adjustment is a formative stage in nursing, it is imperative for nursing researchers to develop them, which may be more relevant to nursing. Second, it is important to develop nursing intervention techniques that may be most effective in adjustment of hemodialysis patients and at the same time for each stage of changes taking place in adjustmented hemodialysis patients.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and test the structural model of a contraceptive behavior in Married Korean women. A hypothesis model was constructed on the basis of the health belief model, the theory of planned behavior and extensive literature review of contraception. The model was built by seven constructs. Four exogeneous variables included in the model were consisted of the contraceptive knowledges, the perceived threats, the sexual autonomy and the communication within a couple. Four endogenous variables were consisted of the attitudes toward contraception, the perceived control, the ability to plan a intercourse and the contraceptive behaviors. Empirical data for testing the hypothetical model were collected by the self report questionnaires from 243 Korean married women. The questionnaires used in this study were developed by this researcher and their Cronbach's alpha scores were ranged from .60 to .88. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS program(ver. 8.0) for descriptive statistical analysis and LISREL program(ver. 8.12a) for covariance structural analysis. On the basis of this results, it could be suggested that contraceptive behaviors be greatly affected by the perceived threats, the communications within couple, the attitudes toward contraception and the perceived control. Finally this model would be useful for the practice, theory and research of nursing.
