From a complex systems perspective, ecohydrological systems in forests may be characterized with (1) large networks of components which give rise to complex collective behaviors, (2) sophisticated information processing, and (3) adaptation through self-organization and learning processes. In order to demonstrate such characteristics, we applied the recently proposed 'process networks' approach to a temperate deciduous forest in Gwangneung National Arboretum in Korea. The process network analysis clearly delineated the forest ecohydrological systems as the hierarchical networks of information flows and feedback loops with various time scales among different variables. Several subsystems were identified such as synoptic subsystem (SS), atmospheric boundary layer subsystem (ABLS), biophysical subsystem (BPS), and biophysicochemical subsystem (BPCS). These subsystems were assembled/disassembled through the couplings/decouplings of feedback loops to form/deform newly aggregated subsystems (e.g., regional subsystem) - an evidence for self-organizing processes of a complex system. Our results imply that, despite natural and human disturbances, ecosystems grow and develop through self-organization while maintaining dynamic equilibrium, thereby continuously adapting to environmental changes. Ecosystem integrity is preserved when the system's self-organizing processes are preserved, something that happens naturally if we maintain the context for self-organization. From this perspective, the process networks approach makes sense.

With the advent of IoT technology and Big Data computing, the importance of WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks) has been on the rise. For energy-efficient and collection-efficient delivery of any sensed data, lots of novel wireless medium access control (MAC) protocols have been proposed and these MAC schemes are the basis of many IoT systems that leads the upcoming fourth industrial revolution. WSNs play a very important role in collecting Big Data from various IoT sensors. Also, due to the limited amount of battery driving the sensors, energy-saving MAC technologies have been recently studied. In addition, as new IoT technologies for Big Data computing emerge to meet different needs, both sensors and sinks need to be mobile. To guarantee stability of WSNs with dynamic topologies as well as frequent physical changes, the existing MAC schemes must be tuned for better adapting to the new WSN environment which includes energy-efficiency and collection-efficiency of sensors, coverage of WSNs and data collecting methods of sinks. To address these issues, in this paper, a self-organization scheme for mobile sensor networks with mobile multiple sinks has been proposed and verified to adapt both mobile sensors and multiple sinks to 3-dimensional group management MAC protocol. Performance evaluations show that the proposed scheme outperforms the previous schemes in terms of the various usage cases. Therefore, the proposed self-organization scheme might be adaptable for various computing and networking environments with big data.
In this paper, an energy efficient clustering scheme using self organization method is proposed. The proposed scheme selects a cluster head considering not only the number of neighbor nodes but also the residual battery amount. In addition, the network life time is extended by re-selecting the cluster heads only in case the current cluster head's residual energy falls down below a certain threshold level. Accordingly, the energy consumption is evenly distributed over the entire network nodes. The cluster head delivers the collected data from member nodes to a Sink node in a way of multi-hop relaying. In order to evaluate the proposed scheme, we run computer simulation in terms of the total residual amount of battery, the number of alive nodes after a certain amount of time, the accumulated energy cost for network configuration, and the deviation of energy consumption of all nodes, comparing with LEACH which is one of the most popular network clustering schemes. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme has twice network life-time of LEACH scheme and has much more evenly distributed energy consumption over the entire network.

In this paper, we propose a new mART(modified ART) neural network by combining the winner neuron definition method of SOM(self-organizing map) and the real-time adaptive clustering function of ART(adaptive resonance theory) and construct it in a modular structure, for the purpose of organizing the feature maps of three dimensional targets. Being constructed in a modular structure, the proposed modular mART can effectively prevent the clusters from representing multiple classes and can be trained to organze two dimensional distortion invariant feature maps so as to recognize targets with three dimensional distortion. We also present the recognition result and self-organization perfdormance of the proposed modular mART neural network after carried out some experiments with 14 tank and fighter target models.
Self-organizing hierarchical ad hoc network (SOHAN) is a new ad-hoc network architecture designed to improve the scalability properties of conventional 'flat' ad hoc networks. This network architecture consists of three tiers of ad-hoc nodes, i.e.. access points, forwarding nodes and mobile nodes. This paper presents a topology discovery and routing protocol for the self-organization of SOHAN. We propose a cross-layer path metric based on link quality and MAC delay which plays a key role in producing an optimal cluster-based hierarchical topology with high throughput capacity. The topology discovery protocol provides the basis for routing which takes place in layer 2.5 using MAC addresses. The routing protocol is based on AODV with appropriate modifications to take advantage of the hierarchical topology and interact with the discovery protocol. Simulation results are presented which show the improved performance as well as scalability properties of SOHAN in terms of through-put capacity, end-to-end delay, packet delivery ratio and control overhead.
The stereo correspondence of two retinal images is one of the most difficult problems in stereo vision because the reconstruction of 3-D scene is a typical visual ill-posed problem. So far there still have been many unsolved problems, one of which is to reconstruct 3-D scene for a monochromatic surface because there is no clue to make a correspondence between two retinal images. We consider this problem with two layered self-organization neural network to simulate the competitive and cooperative interaction of binocular neurons. A...
This article suggests an online-based remote fault current mode discrimination method in order to identify the causes of the power line faults with various causes. For that, it refers to existing cause identification methods and categorizes modes by fault causes based on statistical techniques beforehand and performs the pretreatment process of fault currents by each cause acquired from the fault recorder into a topological plane in order to extract the characteristics of fault currents by each cause. After that, for the fault mode categorization, it discriminates modes by each cause using data by each cause as leaning data through utilizing RBF network based on FCM allowing self-organization in deciding the middle layer. And then it tests the validity of the suggested method as applying it to the data of the actual fault currents acquired from the fault recorder in the electric power transmission center.
This paper introduces the research progress on the artificial brain in the Telerobotics and Control Laboratory at KAIST. This series of studies is based on the assumption that it will be possible to develop an artificial intelligence by copying the mechanisms of the animal brain. Two important brain mechanisms are considered: spike-timing dependent plasticity and dopaminergic plasticity. Each mechanism is implemented in two coding paradigms: spike-codes and rate-codes. Spike-timing dependent plasticity is essential for self-organization in the brain. Dopamine neurons deliver reward signals and modify the synaptic efficacies in order to maximize the predicted reward. This paper addresses how artificial intelligence can emerge by the synergy between self-organization and reinforcement learning. For implementation issues, the rate codes of the brain mechanisms are developed to calculate the neuron dynamics efficiently.
We propose a two-stage document layout segmentation method. At the first stage, as top-down segmentation, morphological distance map algorithm extracts a collection of rectangular regions from a given input image. This preliminary result from the first stage is employed as input parameters for the process of next stage. At the second stage, a machine-learning algorithm is adopted RBF network, one of neural networks based on statistical model, is selected. In order for constructing the hidden layer of RBF network, a data clustering technique bared on the self-organizing property of Kohonen network is utilized. We present a result showing that the supervised neural network, trained by 300 number of sample data, improves the preliminary results of the first stage.

In this paper, we propose energy-aware routing schemes which are simple enough to be applicable to the wireless sensor networks. The one hop upstream no de in direction of the base-station is determined in four different ways based on the energy information of neighboring nodes, which are obtainable via the process of self-organization of the network. The fair distribution of the energy consumption over all the possible routes to the base-station is one of the design objectives. Also, an alternate route search mechanism is proposed to cope with the situation in which no routing information is available due to lack of remaining energy of the neighboring nodes. The mechanism turns out to be a supplementary scheme to improve the energy efficiency. Lots of simulations are performed to examine the performance metrics such as the energy efficiency, throughput, network lifetime, and the transmission latency of the proposed schemes. Simulation results show the feasibility of the simple routing schemes for the sensor networks.
