  • The query optimizer's important task while a query is invoked is to estimate the fraction of records in the databases that satisfy the given query condition. The query result size estimation in spatial databases, like relational databases, proceeds to partition the whole input into a small number of subsets called “buckets” and then estimate the fraction of the input in the buckets. The accuracy of estimation is determined by the difference between the real data counts and approximations in the buckets, and is dependent on how to partition the buckets. Existing techniques for spatial databases are equi-area and equi-count techniques, which are respectively analogous in relation databases to equi-height histogram that divides the input value range into buckets of equal size and equi-depth histogram that is equal to the number of records within each bucket. In this paper we propose a new partitioning technique that determines buckets according to the maximal difference of area which is defined as the product of data ranges End frequencies of input. In this new technique we consider both data values and frequencies of input data simultaneously, and thus achieve substantial improvements in accuracy over existing approaches. We present a detailed experimental study of the accuracy of query result size estimation comparing the proposed technique and the existing techniques using synthetic as well as real-life datasets. Experiments confirm that our proposed techniques offer better accuracy in query result size estimation than the existing techniques for space query size, bucket number, data number and data size.

  • few sample objects and compressed histogram information of image databases. The histogram information is used to estimate the selectivity of spherical range queries and a small number of sample objects is used to compensate the selectivity error due to the difference of the similarity measures between meta server and local image databases. An extensive experiment on a large number of image data demonstrates that our proposed method performs well in the distributed heterogeneous environment.

  • In order to approximate the spatial query result size we partition the input rectangles into subsets and estimate the query result size based on the partitioned spatial area. In this paper we examine query result size estimation in skewed data. We examine the existing spatial partitioning techniques such as equi-area and equi-count partitioning, which are analogous to the equi-width and equi-height histograms used in relational databases, and examine the other partitioning techniques based on spatial indexing. In this paper we propose a new spatial partitioning technique based on the Hilbert space filling curve. We present a detailed experimental evaluation comparing the proposed technique and the existing techniques using synthetic as well as real-life datasets. The experiments showed that the proposed partitioning technique based on the Hilbert space filling curve achieves better query result size estimation than the existing techniques for space query size, bucket numbers, skewed data, and spatial data size.

  • In this paper, by considering the real UWA channel environments, the measured channel data is used to generate the UWA channel model and calculate the relative parameters for underwater OFDM systems. Practical least square (LS) based channel estimation with linear interpolation are adopted to obtain the channel state information (CSI) at receiver side. As multi-input multi-output (MIMO) processing techniques, Alamouti code is implemented and evaluated to perform for space time block coding (STBC) and space frequency block coding (SFBC) for UWA OFDM systems with the MIMO configuration of $2{\times}1$, at the same time, $1{\times}2$ maximum ratio combining (MRC) is performed for the purpose of comparison. The simulation results show that, with perfect channel estimation, SFBC failed to work duo to the serious frequency selectivity of UWA channel environments. When the practical channel estimation is applied, in the case of STBC, the proposed 4-column pilot pattern gives better performance about 7dB than SISO system.

  • In this paper, a curve-fitting channel estimation method is proposed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system in a time-varying frequency-selective fading channel. The method can greatly improve channel state information (CSI) estimation accuracy by performing smoothing and interpolation through consecutive curve-fitting processes in both time domain and frequency domain. It first evaluates least-squares (LS) estimates using pilot symbols and then the estimates are approximated to a polynomial with proper degree in the LS error sense, starting from one preferred domain in which pilots we densely distributed. Smoothing, interpolation, and prediction are performed subsequently to obtain CSI estimates for data transmission. The channel estimation processes are completed by smoothing and interpolating CSI estimates in the other domain once again using the channel estimates obtained in one domain. The performance of proposed method is influenced heavily on the time variation and frequency selectivity of channel and pilot arrangement. Hence, a proper degree of polynomial and an optimum approximation interval according to various system and channel conditions are required for curve-fitting. From extensive simulation results in various channel environments, we see that the proposed method performs better than the conventional methods including the optimal Wiener filtering method, in terms of the mean square error (MSE) and bit error rate (BER).

  • N-nitrosamines, which are classified as carcinogens by IARC and US EPA, can be easily found in various foods. They are reaction products between nitrogen oxide and secondary amines, but can also be generated during fermentation. Ever since the 1960s, when nitrite, used as a preservative in processed meats, was suspected to generate N-nitrosamines, the usage of the food additive has been debated. However, the benefit of nitrite in food supply could not be ignored and the risk-benefit analysis has become a key issue in the use of the additive. For a risk analysis, an accurate estimation of the hazardous material is necessary; therefore, analytical methods for nitrosamines have continuously evolved from the 1950s. Solid supported liquid-liquid extraction and solid phase extractions have replaced the distillation for the clean-up steps, and tandem mass spectrometry is employed for higher selectivity and sensitivity. In the present study, for a better estimation of N-nitrosamine intake, the total diet study samples were prepared for the N-nitrosamines analysis. In order to obtain the most sensitive results, a partial preparation procedure was developed and modified for different food matrices. Among seven N-nitrosamines (N-nitrosodimethylamine, N-nitrosomethylethylamine, N-nitrosodiethylamine, N-nitrosodibutylamine, N-nitrosopiperidine, N-nitrosopyrrolidine, and N-nitrosomorpholine) analyzed in the present study, N-nitrosodiethylamine has shown the highest detection rate in agricultural foods, while N-nitrosodimethylamine has appeared most frequently in livestock and fishery food products. The concentration of N-nitrosodimethylamine was the highest in seasoning.

  • Histogram is one of tools that efficiently summarize data, and it is widely used for selectivity estimation and approximate query answering. Existing histogram construction algorithms are applicable to point data represented by a set of values. As often as point data, we can meet interval data such as daily temperature and daily stock prices. In this paper, we thus propose the histogram construction algorithms for interval data by extending several methods used in existing histogram construction algorithms. Our experiment results, using synthetic data, show our algorithms outperform naive extension of existing algorithms.

  • Recent world-wide interest in activity-based travel behavior modeling has generated an entirely new perspective on how the profession views the travel demand process. This paper seeks to further promote the case of activity-based travel behavior models by providing some empirical evidence of relationship between travel time and activity duration decision for worker with transportation panel data. The travel time from home to work and from work to home, without activity involvement, is estimated by the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method. And, the travel time to and from the selected activity and the activity duration are modeled simultaneously by the Three Stage Least Squares (3SLS) method due to the endogenous relationship between travel time and activity duration. Two kinds of models, OLS and 3SLS, include selectivity bias corrections in a discrete/continuous framework, because of the inter-relationship between the choice of activity type/travel mode (discrete) and the travel time/activity duration (continuous). Estimation is undertaken using a sample of over 1300 household two-day trip diaries collected from the same travelers in the Seattle area in 1989. The behavioral consequences of these models provide interesting and provocative findings that should be of value to transportation policy formulation and analysis.

  • Ever since the UN Summit agreed on the MDGs in 2000, OECD/DAC member countries have taken poverty reduction as the main goal of their aid. To achieve this goal, all donors and recipient countries agreed on the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness in 2005. To monitor and evaluate the progress in the targets of the Declaration, all donors and recipients got together periodically, and the 2011 conference was held in Busan, Korea. As part of this effort, this paper aims to assess the extent to which DAC donors have allocated their aid to achieve the MDGs during the latest millennium era: 2005-2009. In addition, to compare the aid allocation performance between DAC members and non-DAC emerging donors, this paper also assesses the aid allocation performance of Korea (KOICA) for the same period. The analysis of this paper shows evidence contrary to the recent literature findings that donors tended to select, as their aid recipients, those countries that warranted more aid on account of their acute development needs, and good policies and institutions. The difference between the recent literature and this paper is attributed to the different sample periods and/or the weaknesses of the estimation models and methods adopted in the literature. This paper shows why a different estimation method is adopted and why its estimation results are more reliable and convincing. This paper also shows the difference between DAC and non-DAC donors in the aid allocation performance by analyzing aid allocations by the representative aid agency of Korea (KOICA), and recommends some policy measures to be taken by both DAC and non-DAC donors.

  • In semiconductor industries, dissolved oxygen is one of the most undesirable contaminants of ultrapure water. A method for dissolved oxygen removal (DOR) consists in the use of polymeric hollow fibres, loaded with a catalyst and fed with a reducing agent such as hydrogen. In this work, PVDF hollow fibres loaded with Pd were characterized by means of perporometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The hollow fibre analyzed shows a five-layer structure with remarkable morphological differences. An estimation of pore diameters and their distribution was performed giving a mean pore diameter of 100 nm. The permeance and selectivity of the fibres were measured using $H_2,\;N_2,\;O_2$ as single gases, at different operating conditions. An $H_2$ permeance of $37 mmol/m^2s$ was measured and $H_2/O_2$ and $H_2/N_2$ selectivities of ca. 3 were obtained. $H_2$ permeance was 1/3 when a water stream flows in the shell side. Catalytic fibrebehaviour was simulated using a mathematical model for a loop membrane reactor, considering only $O_2$ and $H_2$ diffusive transport inside the membrane and their catalytic reaction. Dimensionless parameters such as the Thiele modulus are employed to describe the system behaviour. The model agrees well with the experimental reaction data.
