Study on chlorination of ilmenite ore were carried out by using PVC(polyvinyl chloride) as the chlorinating agent in a static bed reactor for selective removal of iron. The effect of amount of PVC and reaction temperature were investigated. It was found that the removal ratio of iron increased with amount of PVC and temperature. After reaction with HCl gas generated from PVC, porous surface of the specimens were observed. As a result, HCl gas could react with iron in the central portion of ilmenite particle through these pores. Examination of data using kinetic model suggest that the selective chlorination rate is controlled by chemical reaction at the interface of particles. The activation energy for the selective chlorination of ilmenite using PVC was calculated as 20.47 kJ/mol.

Selective ${\beta}_1$-agonist and antagonists are used for the treatment of cardiac diseases including congestive heart failure, angina pectoris and arrhythmia. Selective ${\beta}_1$-antagonists including nebivolol have high binding affinity on ${\beta}_1$-adrenergic receptor, not ${\beta}_2$-receptor mainly expressed in smooth muscle. Nebivolol is one of most selective ${\beta}_1$-blockers in clinically used ${\beta}_1$-blockers including atenolol and bisoprolol. We tried to develop clinically useful cardiac PET tracers using a selective ${\beta}_1$-blocker. Nebivolol is $C_2$-symmetric and has two chromane moiety with a secondary amino alcohol and aromatic fluorine. We adopted the general synthetic strategy using epoxide ring opening reaction. Unlike formal synthesis of nebivolol, we prepared two chromane building blocks with fluorine and iodine which was transformed to diaryliodonium salt for labelling of $^{18}F$. Two epoxide building blocks were readily prepared from commercially available chromene carboxylic acids (1, 8). Then, the amino alcohol building block (15) was prepared by ammonolysis of epoxide (14) followed by coupling reaction with the other building block, epoxide (7). Diaryliodonium salt, a precursor for $^{18}F$-aromatic substitution, was synthesized in moderate yield which was readily subjected to $^{18}F$-aromatic substitution to give $^{18}F$-labelled nebivolol.

A fast and reliable method for the selective separation and preconcentration of $Cu^{2+}$ ions using homogeneous liquid-liquid extraction was developed. A new $\alpha$-dioxime derivative (2H-1,4-benzothioazine-2,3(4H)dionedioxime, Dioxime I) was synthesized and investigated as a suitable selective complexing ligand for $Cu^{2+}$ ions. Zonyl FSA (FSA) was applied as a phase-separator agent under the slightly acidic pH conditions. Under the optimal experimental conditions ([FSA] = 3.2% w/v, [THF] = 19.5% v/v, [Dioxime I] = 1.9 ${\times}\;10^{-3}$ M, and pH = 4.7), 10 ${\mu}g\;of\;Cu^{2+}$ in 5.2 mL aqueous phase could be extracted quantitatively into 80 $\mu$L of the sedimented phase. The maximum concentration factor was 65-fold. The limit of detection of the proposed method was 0.005 ng $mL^{-1}$. The reproducibility of the proposed method, on the 10 replicate measurements, was 1.3%. The influence of the pH, type and volume of the water-miscible organic solvent, concentration of FSA, concentration of the complexing ligand and the effect of different diverse ions on the extraction and determination of $Cu^{2+}$ ions were investigated. The proposed method was applied to the extraction and determination of $Cu^{2+}$ ion in different synthetic and natural water samples.
The present study was designed to investigate the efficacy of selective $ET_A$ receptor antagonist, ambrisentan on hyperhomocysteinemia-induced experimental vascular dementia. L-methionine was administered for 8 weeks to induce hyperhomocysteinemia and associated vascular dementia in male rats. Ambrisentan was administered to L-methionine-treated effect rats for 4 weeks (starting from $5^{th}$ to $8^{th}$ week of L-methionine treatment). On $52^{nd}$ day onward, the animals were exposed to the Morris water maze (MWM) for testing their learning and memory abilities. Vascular endothelial function, serum nitrite/nitrate levels, brain thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS), brain reduced glutathione (GSH) levels, and brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity were also measured. L-methionine-treated animals showed significant learning and memory impairment, endothelial dysfunction, decrease in/serum nitrite/nitrate and brain GSH levels along with an increase in brain TBARS levels and AChE activity. Ambrisentan significantly improved hyperhomocysteinemia-induced impairment of learning, memory, endothelial dysfunction, and changes in various biochemical parameters. These effects were comparable to that of donepezil serving as positive control. It is concluded that ambrisentan, a selective $ET_A$ receptor antagonist may be considered as a potential pharmacological agent for the management of hyperhomocysteinemia-induced vascular dementia.

An analytical methodology was developed for qualitative and quantitative impurity profiling of the coloring agent Sudan III by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-diode array detection (DAD). The impurities in commercial Sudan III were characterized by comparison of their retention times and UV spectra with those of authentic standards. Four impurities regulated by International Committees in Sudan III were quantified by HPLC-selective UV detection. The impurities in Sudan dye were successfully separated on a reversed phase C18-column within 25 min and sensitively detected by UV spectrometry at two selective wavelengths. Method validation was conducted to determine linearity, precision, accuracy, and limit of quantification (LOQ). The linear dynamic range extended from 0.002 to 4.0%, with a correlation coefficient (R2) greater than 0.995. The LOQs of the impurities ranged from 8.04 to $54.29{\mu}g/mg$. Based on the established method, the levels of regulated impurities in five commercial Sudan III dyes were determined.
The ascomycete fungus Fusarium graminearum is a major causal agent for Fusarium head blight in cereals and produces mycotoxins such as trichothecenes and zearalenone. Isolation of the fungal strains from air or cereals can be hampered by various other airborne fungal pathogens and saprophytic fungi. In this study, we developed a selective medium specific to F. graminearum using toxoflavin produced by the bacterial pathogen Burkholderia glumae. F. graminearum was resistant to toxoflavin, while other fungi were sensitive to this toxin. Supplementing toxoflavin into medium enhanced the isolation of F. graminearum from rice grains by suppressing the growth of saprophytic fungal species. In addition, a medium with or without toxoflavin exposed to wheat fields for 1 h had 84% or 25%, respectively, of colonies identified as F. graminearum. This selection medium provides an efficient tool for isolating F. graminearum, and can be adopted by research groups working on genetics and disease forecasting.
A selective chlorination of titaniferrous magnetite in a fluidized bed reactor was investigated to find the optimum condition for selective removal of Fe component from low grade titaniferrours magnetite ore and to produce a rutile substitute from titaniferrous magnetite ore. The optimum chlorination condition was determined to be a temperaure of $950^{\circ}C$, 2hr of reaction time, reducting agent(petroleum coke) to titaniferrous magnetite weight ratio of 0.12, and $Cl_2$ gas velocity of 5cm/sec. Under the above mentioned condition, 99% of Fe in titaniferrous magnetite was removed and the reaction residue which became rutile substitute was identified as rutile by x-ray diffraction and was found to contain 70% $TiO_2$.

The behaviors of various desorption agents were investigated during the desorption of cesium (Cs) from samples of clay minerals and actual soil. Results showed that polymeric cation exchange agents (polyethyleneimine (PEI)) efficiently desorbed Cs from expandable montmorillonite, whereas acidic desorption solutions containing HCl or PEI removed considerable Cs from hydrobiotite. However, most desorption agents could desorb only 54% of Cs from illite because of Cs's specific adsorption to selective adsorption sites. Cs desorption from an actual soil sample containing Cs-selective clay mineral illite (< 200 ㎛) and extracted from near South Korea's Kori Nuclear Power Plant was also investigated. Considerable adsorbed 137Cs was expected to be located at Cs-selective sites when the 137Cs loading was much lower than the sample's cation exchange capacity. At this low 137Cs loading, the total Cs amount desorbed by repeated washing varied by desorption agent in the order HCl > PEI > NH4+, and the highest Cs desorption amount achieved using HCl was 83%. Unlike other desorption agents with only cation exchange capabilities, HCl can attack minerals and induce dissolution of metallic elements. HCl's ability to both alter minerals and induce H+/Cs+ ion exchange is expected to promote Cs desorption from actual soil samples.
A chloroform membrane system containing a given mixture of benzylaza-12-crown-4 and oleic acid is introduced for the selective and efficient transport of $Pb^{2+}$ ion. The transport was capable of moving metal ions ‘up-hill’. In the presence of ${S_2O_3}^{2-}$ion as a suitable metal ion acceptor in the receiving phase, the amount of lead ion transport across the liquid membrane after 150 minutes is (95.0 ${\pm}$ 1.7)%. The selectivity and efficiency of lead transport from aqueous solution containing $Tl^+,\;Ag^+,\;Mg^{2+},\;Ca^{2+},\;Co^{2+},$$Ni^{2+},\;Cu^{2+},\;Zn^{2+},\;Hg^{2+}$ and $Cd^{2+}$were investigated. In the presence of thiosulfate as a suitable masking agent in the source phase, the interfering effects of $Ag^+\;and\;Cu^{2+}$ were diminished drastically.
