This paper deals with tomographic travel time inversion of three dimensional seismic refraction survey conducted over a dipping interface. The slowness, and thus velocity as its reciprocal, distribution on the subsurface interface is to be determined applying an ART with under-relaxtion parameter. The models chosen are realistic, i.e., most likely to be met in engineering seismics, and the interface includes anomalous zones. It is found that, generally speaking, the inversion could be misleading or meaningless without the correction of the dip of the interface. This is rather surprising when we recall that usual assumption for the interpretation of refraction seismics data is the horizontal attitude of structures within the limit of $15^{\circ}$ dip or so. To make the present method tenable for a new means of routine seismics, some practical ways of identifying head wave arrivals are to be devised.
The activity of the seismic wave propagation around the cavity is investigated for the exact inversion of the crosshole tomography data, in order to understand the possibility of the existence inside the underground cavity. It is found that the adequate frequency range for the tunnel investigation is about 2 kHz to 5 kHz, and the grid space should be set up to 1/10 of the wavelength. The propagation of the seismic wave near the cavity may go through or detour the cavity according to the seismic velocity inside the cavity. The detouring wave propagates with the seismic velocity of mother rock in spite of the velocity of inside of the cavity. The smaller the velocity difference is between the mother rock and cavity, the more frequent penetration of the seismic wave through the cavity appears.
The discrete wavelet transform(DWT) has potential as a tool for supplying discriminatory attributes with which to distinguish seismic events. The wavelet transform has the great advantage over the Fourier transform in being able to localize changes. In this study, a discrete wavelet transform is applied to seismic traces for identifying seismic events and picking of arrival times for first breaks and S-wave arrivals. The precise determination of arrival times can greatly improve the quality of a number of geophysical studies, such as velocity analysis, refraction seismic survey, seismic tomography, down-hole and cross-hole survey, and sonic logging, etc. provide precise determination of seismic velocities. Tests for picking of P- and S- wave arrival times with the wavelet transform method is conducted with synthetic seismic traces which have or do not have noises. The results show that this picking algorithm can be successfully applied to noisy traces. The first arrival can be precisely determined with the field data, too.

We found that the adequate frequency range for the tunnel investigation was about 2kHz to 5kHz, and the grid space was set up to 1/10 length of wavelength. The on-land seismic survey in Korea was begun in mid-1960s. Kim et al.(1967) of Korea Geological Survey reported on the result of gravity and seismic reflection surveys conducted in the Pohang area for the period of 1963-64 to assess its possibility of oil entrapment. Hyun and Kim (1966) carried out a refraction survey on the tunnel wall. Since then, the KGS geophysicists had conducted seismic surveys on Kyungsang sedimentary basin as a main project for several years. In 1970s, on-land seismic surveys had been conducted for various purposes such as site investigation for the nuclear power plants and industrial complex, exploration for ground water, mineral resources and underground tunnel. The first reflection survey with CMP acquisition was attempted in 1978 by using a digital recording system. But most of on-land seismic surveys had employed the refraction method until 1980s. In 1990s, high resolution reflection and various borehole seismic surveys such as tomography, uphole, downhole, cross-hole methods have been attempted by universities and engineering companies. The applications of on-land seismic surveys have been enlarged for both academic and industrial purposes such as investigation of geologic structure of the fault and tidal flat area, construction of highway, railroad and dam, geothermal energy and mineral resource exploration, environmental assessment for waste disposal sites and archaeological investigations. In 2002, the first crustal seismic survey was carried out on the profile of 294km length across the whole peninsular. It is expected that the advanced technology and experience acquired through offshore seismic surveys, which have been conducted in continental shelf of Korea and foreign oil fields, will stimulate the more active on-land seismic explorations.
In this study, we describe the principle and result of geophysical techniques which are widely used in geotechnical survey. Also we discuss two case histories. One is discrimination of limestone cavity areas by resistivity, seismic tomography, televiewer, well logging, and the other is discrimination of coal by resistivity, electromagnetic method, resistivity tomography.
For the dectection of small cavity in the hard rock, we investigated the feasibility of crosswell travel-time tomography and Kirchhoff migration technique. In travel-time tomography, first arrival anomaly caused by small cavity was investigated by numerical modeling based on the knowledge of actual field information. First arrival delay was very small (<0.125 msec) and detectable receiver offset range was limited to 4m with respect to $1\%$ normalized first arrival anomaly. As a consequence, it was turned out that carefully designed survey array with both sufficient narrow spatial spacing and temporal (<0.03125 msec) sampling were required for small cavity detection. Also, crosswell Kirchhoff migration technique was investigated with both numerical and real data. Stack section obtained by numerical data shows the good cavity image. In crosswell seismic data, various unwanted seismic events such as direct wave and various mode converted waves were alto recorded. To remove these noises und to enhance the diffraction signal, combination of median and bandpass filtering was applied and prestack and stacked migration images were created. From this, we viewed the crosswell migration technique as one of the adoptable method for small cavity detection.
In order to estimate the confidence level of the velocity distribution shown in a velocity image reconstructed from a travel-time tomography, the ray coverage and the inversion characteristics of the system matrix were investigated. The targets of the analysis is the first arrival travel-time, the raypath information, and the resulting velocity model. The ray coverage, degree of ray and model coupling, was estimated by the number of rays and total ray length in a velocity grid, and information regarding the resolution and uncertainties involved in the reconstructed velocity model was derived from the results of the SVD analysis of the system matrix that relates the data space (first arrival travel times) to the model space (velocity distribution in tomogram).
Anomalies and/or fractured grounds not detected by the surface geophysical and geological survey performed during design stage may cause significant problems during tunnel excavation. Many studies on prediction methods of the ground condition ahead of the tunnel face have been conducted and applied in tunneling construction sites, such as tunnel seismic profiling and probe drilling. However, most such applications have focused on the drill and blast tunneling method. Few studies have been conducted for mechanized tunneling because of the limitation in the available space to perform prediction tests. This study aims to predict the ground condition ahead of the tunnel face in TBM tunneling by using an electrical resistivity tomography survey. It compared the characteristics of each electrode array and performed an investigation on in-situ tunnel boring machine TBM construction site environments. Numerical simulations for each electrode array were performed, to determine the proper electrode array to predict anomalies ahead of the tunnel face. The results showed that the modified dipole-dipole array is, compared to other arrays, the best for predicting the location and condition of an anomaly. As the borehole becomes longer, the measured data increase accordingly. Therefore, longer boreholes allow a more accurate prediction of the location and status of anomalies and complex grounds.
We introduce OBS and sonobuoy systems which are the typical wide-angle reflection/refraction seismic recorders made by KORDI for the investigation of crustal structure and the sediment/basement structure in the coastal area. These recording devices are examined for their usage through the test survey. The normal operation of these devices were proved and good recordings were obatined. The head waves are recognized in the sonobuoy records, which shows the possibility of velocity structure survey by the refraction and/or tomography method.
