Lap splices of longitudinal reinforcement steels were practically located in the potential plastic hinge region of most bridge columns that were constructed before the 1992 seismic design provision of Roadway Bridge Design Specification in Korea. The objective of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of shear-critical reinforced concrete(RC) bridge piers with poor detailing of the starter bars in the plastic hinge region, and to develop the enhancement scheme of their seismic capacity by retrofitting with fiber composites. Seven test specimens in the aspect ratio of 2.5 were made with three confinement ratios and two types of lap splices. Quasi-static test was conducted in a displacement-controlled test mode. A significant reduction of displacement ductility ratios were observed for test columns with lap splices of longitudinal steels.
Seismic performance of critical facilities has been focused on the structural components over the past decade. However, most earthquake damages were observed to the nonstructural components during and after the earthquakes. The primary objective of this research was to develop the seismic fragility of the piping system incorporating the nonlinear Tee-joint finite element model in the full scale piping configuration installed in critical facilities. The procedure for evaluating fragility curves corresponding to the first damage state was considered the effects of the top floor acceleration sensitivities for 5, 10, 15, and 20 story linear RC and steel building systems subjected to 22 selected ground motions as a function of ground motion uncertainties. The result of this study revealed that the conditional probability of failure of the piping system on the top floor in critical facilities did not increase with increased level of story height and in fact, story level in buildings can tune the fragilities between the building and the piping system.
The objective of this study is to reveal the sufficiency of neural networks (NN) as a securer, quicker, more robust and reliable method to be used in seismic assessment of existing reinforced concrete buildings. The NN based approach is applied as an alternative method to determine the seismic performance of each existing RC buildings, in terms of damage level. In the application of the NN, a multilayer perceptron (MLP) with a back-propagation (BP) algorithm is employed using a scaled conjugate gradient. NN based model wasd eveloped, trained and tested through a based MATLAB program. The database of this model was developed by using a statistical procedure called P25 method. The NN based model was also proved by verification set constituting of real existing RC buildings exposed to 2003 Bingol earthquake. It is demonstrated that the NN based approach is highly successful and can be used as an alternative method to determine the seismic performance of each existing RC buildings.

The objective of this research is to evaluate of seismic performance for reinforced concrete bridge piers with lap splices of longitudinal reinforcement steels using predicting of nonlinear hysteric behavior. For the purpose, enhanced analytical trilinear hystretic model has been proposed to simulate the force-displacement hysteretic curve of RC bridge piers under repeated reversal loads. The moment capacity and corresponding curvature in the plastic hinge have been determined, and the enhanced hysteretic behavior model by five different kinds of branches has been proposed for modeling the stiffness variation of RC section under cyclic loading. The strength and stiffness degradation index are introduced to compute the hysteretic curve for various confinement steel ratios, In addition, the modified curvature factor has been introduced to forecast of seismic performance of longitudinal steel lap spliced and retrofitted specimens. The results of this research will be useful to predict of seismic performance for longitudinal steel with lap spliced and its retrofitted specimens.

The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic performance for a seismically isolated main control room (MCR) of nuclear power plant. MCR was isolated by spherically shaped friction pendulum system (FPS). The FPS provided the simplest means of achieving long period in the isolation system under low gravity load. Some parametric studies were conducted with different properties of FPS. When the coefficient of friction in the sliding surface of FPS is low, the seismic performance of MCR was satisfactory However, the lateral displacement in the isolation level was rather large. To restrict this displacement into adequate range, a fluid viscous dampers were used.

The objective of this study is to develop a model which can predict the seismic performance of the slope relatively accurately and efficiently by using artificial neural network(ANN) technique. The quantification of such the seismic performance of the slope is not easy task due to the randomness and the uncertainty of the earthquake input and slope model. Under these circumstances, probabilistic seismic fragility analyses of slope have been carried out by several researchers, and a closed-form equation for slope seismic performance was proposed through a multiple linear regression analysis. However, a traditional statistical linear regression analysis has shown a limit that cannot accurately represent the nonlinearistic relationship between the slope of various conditions and seismic performance. In order to overcome these problems, in this study, we attempted to apply the ANN to generate prediction models of the seismic performance of the slope. The validity of the derived model was verified by comparing this with the conventional multi-linear and multi-nonlinear regression models. As a result, the models obtained through the ANN basically showed excellent performance in predicting the seismic performance of the slope, compared to the models obtained by the statistical regression analyses of the previous study.

The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic capacity of the non-seismically detailed RC bridge piers before and after applying a seismic retrofitting method using stainless steel wire mesh. Total nine circular section RC piers were constructed. Different lap splice longitudinal reinforcement details were adapted for four specimens and various types of stainless steel wire mesh were applied for the remaining five specimens. Harmonic cyclic lateral load was applied on each specimen under a constant axial load. The test results indicated that the existing circular piers have low seismic capacity while the stainless steel wire mesh retrofitting method improves the seismic capacity considerably. In addition, test results revealed that the circular section piers could have a considerable amount of ductility if longitudinal bars are not lap-spliced in potential plastic hinge zone. Based on this experimental study it could be concluded that the seismic performance, that is ductility and energy absorption capacity, of the non-seismically detailed RC bridge piers would be increased by applying the stainless steel wire mesh seismic retrofitting method.

Tuned mass damper (TMD) is widely used to reduce dynamic responses of structures subjected to earthquake loads. A smart tuned mass damper (STMD) was proposed to increase control performance of a traditional passive TMD. A lot of research was conducted to investigate the control performance of a STMD based on analytical method. Experimental study of evaluation of control performance of a STMD was not widely conducted to date. Therefore, seismic response reduction capacity of a STMD was experimentally investigated in this study. For this purpose, a STMD was manufactured using an MR (magnetorheological) damper. A simple structure presenting dynamic characteristics of spacial roof structure was made as a test structure. A STMD was made to control vertical responses of the test structure. Two artificial ground motions and a resonance harmonic load were selected as experimental seismic excitations. Shaking table test was conducted to evaluate control performance of a STMD. Control algorithms are one of main factors affect control performance of a STMD. In this study, a groundhook algorithm that is a traditional semi-active control algorithm was selected. And fuzzy logic controller (FLC) was used to control a STMD. The FLC was optimized by multi-objective genetic algorithm. The experimental results presented that the TMD can effectively reduce seismic responses of the example structures subjected to various excitations. It was also experimentally shown that the STMD can more effectively reduce seismic responses of the example structures conpared to the passive TMD.

The objective of this study is to investigate the response reducing effect of a seismic isolation system installed between 300m dome and supports under both horizontal and vertical seismic ground motion. The time history analysis is performed to investigate the dynamic behavior of single layer lattice domes with and without a lead rubber bearing seismic isolation system. In order to ensure the seismic performance of lattice domes against strong earthquakes, it is important to investigate the mechanical characteristics of dynamic response. Horizontal and vertical seismic ground motions cause a large asymmetric vertical response of large span domes. One of the most effective methods to reduce the dynamic response is to install a seismic isolation system for observing seismic ground motion at the base of the dome. This paper discusses the dynamic response characteristics of 300m single layer lattice domes supported on a lead rubber seismic isolation device under horizontal and vertical seismic ground motions.
