  • As increasing number of large-size earthquake, the social interest of seismic retrofitting of RC structure is growing. Especially, the RC columns that are not reflected seismic design can not resist lateral loads by the earthquake. The brittle fracture of Non-seismic designed columns lead to full collapse of the building. Thus, the emergency columns reinforcement method is needed. That have a fast construction time, do not cause damage to the column. In the past, cross-sectional expansion method, a steel plate reinforcing method is applied mainly, but in recent years, carbon fiber sheet taking advantage of FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) is widely used. In this study, retrofitting effect of seismic performance of FRP seismic reinforcement, which is possible to emergency construction, was examined. Reinforced concrete specimens were constructed to experimental study. The seismic performence of specimes retrifitted with FRP seismic reinforcement were evaluated. As a result, the seismic performance of specimen reinforced with FRP seismic reinforcement has been improved.

  • This paper presents a study carried out for the seismic capacity in reinforced concrete(RC) piers by the confinement effect of transverse reinforcement as such a hooked-tied, welded-tied and spiral reinforcement. In order to assess the seismic capacity with transverse reinforcement, experiment리 and analytical methods were adopted. A RC column survey was conducted based on eight one-fourth scale single circular column specimens designed and tested under slow horizontal cyclic loads. Two cases were analyzed. The confinement effect of concrete by transverse reinforcement is considered not in Case 1 but in Case 2. Also, we studied the propriety of making use of the method in which a carbon fiber rod replace spiral reinforcement in RC piers. In experimental tests, a welded-tied and spiral reinforcement has a good seismic capacity, but a carbon fiber rod presents low ductility in comparison with a hooked-tied reinforcement. In an analytical study, displacement ductility is approximate to the experimental result because of considering the confinement effect of the transverse reinforcement. Even if the confinement effect of the transverse reinforcement is considered, the analytical results for ductility of the specimens with welded-tied and spiral reinforcement show an excessive underestimation of the experimental results.

  • In 2005, Urban railway seismic design was introduced in Rep. Of Korea, and many studies on seismic performance evaluation and reinforcement methods were conducted. In accordance with the Enforcement Decree of the Earthquake Disaster Countermeasures Act issued in March 2009, during April 2010 to October 2013, some of local governments established detailed evaluation and reinforcement measures for seismic performance of the urban railway underground structure. Afterwards, the seismic performance reinforcement of the existing urban railway structures was conducted for the sections that a long period of used until the end of 2018, and the reinforcement works are carried out by various methods using the previously studied methods. However, various reinforcing materials and construction methods using have been studied, but the classification research on the construction methods currently applied to reinforcement construction of urban railways is insufficient. The purpose of study is to analysis the cases currently applied to seismic reinforcement construction and to show the characteristics of each construction method, the reasons for its application and problems.

  • Recently, with frequent earthquakes around the world, research on seismic design and seismic reinforcement of reinforced concrete facilities has been actively conducted from earthquakes. In particular, columns, which are compressed members of reinforced concrete structures, are vulnerable to lateral forces caused by earthquakes, so an appropriate seismic reinforcement method is required. Therefore, this study intended to develop Velcro seismic reinforcement method that is quick and easy to construct. For the development of Velcro seismic reinforcement, the adhesion and tensile strength of the existing industrial velcro was improved. A direct tensile test was also conducted to compare the tensile performance of the newly-developed velcro seismic reinforcement to industrial one. In addition, numerical analysis was performed to predict the seismic performance of RC columns reinforced by industrial and newly-developed velcro. Based on the analysis results, the strength and ductility of the non-seismic and velcro-reinforced RC column were reviewed. The analysis confirmed that both the strength and ductility of non-seismic RC columns reinforced by industrial and newly-developed velcro increased, but the seismic performance of the newly-developed Velcro reinforcement is better than that of industrial velcro.

  • This study proposed a BCM(Binding Column Method) that can reinforce the insufficient seismic force of piloti buildings that are not designed for seismic resistance. In addition, 4 reinforcement specimens and 1 reference specimen were manufactured for the proposed seismic reinforcement method. The effect of improving seismic performance before and after reinforcement was examined through repeated loading tests. As a result of experiment, seismic reinforcement specimen with BCM system showed hysteretic characteristics of a large ellipse with great energy dissipation ability and increased strength and stiffness, while reference specimen showed rapid reduction in strength and brittle shear failure column. In addition, it can be seen that the reinforcing effect is improved as the gap is narrow, the torque is large, and the thickness of the L-shaped steel sheet is thicker. The SC4 specimen showed the best seismic performance reinforcement effect.

  • Seismic strengthening is essential for existing bridge piers which are deficient to resist the earthquake. The concrete and CFRP jackets with a bottom-anchoring method are used to strengthen railway bridge piers with low reinforcement ratio. Quasi-static tests of scaled down model piers are performed to evaluate the seismic performance of the original and strengthened bridge pier. The fracture characteristics indicate that the vulnerable position of the railway bridge pier with low reinforcement ratio during earthquake is the pier-footing region and shows flexural failure mode. The force-displacement relationships show that the two strengthening techniques using CFRP and concrete jackets can both provide a significant improvement in load-carrying capacity for railway bridge piers with low reinforcement ratio. It is clear that the bottom-anchoring method by using planted steel bars can guarantee the CFRP and concrete jackets to work jointly with original concrete piers Furthermore, it can be found that the use of CFRP jacket offers advantages over concrete jacket in improving the energy dissipation capacity under lateral cyclic loading. Therefore, the seismic strengthening techniques by the use of CFRP and concrete jackets provide alternative choices for the large numbers of existing railway bridge piers with low reinforcement ratio in China.

  • This paper is conducted to compare the seismic design standard of a bridge column such as the Korean Bridge Design Standard(KBDS), EC 8, NZS 3101 and ATC 32. The KBDS adopted the seismic design requirements in 1992. The earthquake magnitude in Korea is compared with those in the west coast of the USA. It may be said that the current seismic design requirements of the KBDS provides design results, that are too conservative especially for transverse reinforcement details and amounts in reinforced concrete columns. This fact usually creates construction problems in concrete casting, due to congestion of transverse reinforcement. Furthermore, the effective stiffness; $I_{eff}$ depends on both the axial load P/$A_gF_{ck}$ and the longitudinal reinforcement ratio $A_{st}/A_g, so it is the conservative to use the effective stiffness I$_{eff}$ than the gross section stiffness Ig. Seismic design for the transverse reinforcement content of the concrete column was analyzed and considered to have an extreme-fiber compression strain, response modification factor, axial load and effective stiffness etc.c.

  • In this study, a general low-rise building was selected to compare the new shear wall reinforcement method, which is a general method among the existing reinforcement methods, and the reinforcement method using sinusoidal corrugated web reinforcement. And it was confirmed that the following effects can be expected. Sinusoidal corrugated web members can be carried out in a short period of time as it does not require the removal of the masonry filling wall, the reinforcement of reinforcing bars, and the curing period of the concrete. It is effective in preventing damage that may occur when masonry filling wall is overturned in the out-of-plane direction, and the burden of the foundation is also reduced, and thus the construction period and cost required for reinforcement can greatly be reduced. By adjusting the number of sinusoidal corrugated web member, details of joints, and reinforcement positions, the flow of load can be induced to have an advantageous effect on the building. It can be considered as the most suitable reinforcement plan in terms of life safety. Unlike the shear wall that fills between the columns, the sinusoidal corrugated web members, which has a width of 1.5m, can install openings between two columns depending on the purpose of use, and can be expected to have a great effect in terms of usability due to its free installation location. As mentioned above, the seismic reinforcement using a sinusoidal corrugated web members, can expect great effect compared to conventional reinforcement methods in terms of usability, economic feasibility, and stability.

  • The purpose of this study is to experimentally evaluate the effect of improving seismic performance by applying the details of seismic reinforcement to the reinforced concrete frame with non-seismic details while maintaining the original opening shape. In this study, based on CF specimens with specific seismic details, a total of four full scale specimens were designed and fabricated. The main variables are the width and spacing of steel dampers installed in the upper and lower parts of seismic reinforcement details, and the presence or absence of torsion springs installed in the hinges. As a result of the test, it was evaluated to be helpful for seismic retrofit and opening isolation of steel dampers installed at the upper and lower parts of the seismic reinforcement details and torsion springs installed at the joints. In particular, CFR2S specimens with torsion springs showed the best performance in terms of strength, stiffness and energy dissipation capacity with increasing displacement angle.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the seismic performance of gravity-designed post tensioned (PT) flat plate frames with and without slab bottom reinforcement passing through the column. For the PT flat plate frames, the slab bottom reinforcement is often omitted since the requirement for the slab bottom reinforcement for PT flat plates is not clearly specified in ACI 318-08. This study evaluates the seismic performance of the model frames was evaluated by conducting nonlinear time history analysis. The seismic performance of PT flat plate frames is significantly improved by placing slab bottom reinforcement passing through the column.
