  • This paper proposes a straightforward method of analyzing the operation characteristics for the capacitor run single-phase induction motor from the traditional equivalent circuit based on the revolving field theory. The proposed method consists of five procedures as follows: mechanical loss segregation, iron loss segregation and calculation of the equivalent circuit parameters, recalculation of parameters of the main winding side, calculation of the auxiliary winding magnetizing reactance and effective turn ratio, and analyzing the operation characteristics for this motor. When the characteristics are analyzed, the segregated mechanical and iron losses are considered as a loss resistance across input terminals of the equivalent circuit for the analysis. The validity of the proposed method is verified from the comparison between the computed results and the experimental ones for the operation characteristics.

  • We present the color-magnitude diagrams (CMD) of more than 24,000 stars in the field of an intermediate age open cluster M11, based on wide field CCD imaging. The morphology of the CMDs varies strikingly as the distance from the center of the cluster increases. From the surface number density analysis, we confirm the mass segregation effect in this cluster: the bright, massive stars are centrally more concetrated than the faint, low mass stars. The slope of the field-corrected surface density with respect to magnitude progressively increases as the radius increases, up to r = 5'. Most of the field stars in or near the cluster main sequence band and in the bright part of the red stars in the CMDs appear to be nearly at the same distance as M11, and they are considered to be the major component of disk stars in the Sagittarius-Carina arm.

  • Triblock copolymers of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) middle block and degradable polyester end blocks were synthesized by the ring open polymerization initialed by alcohol groups of PDMS. Surface composition of the triblock copolymers is measured by angle-dependent electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. The PDMS blocks are segregated in the topmost surface region and constituted up to 90 mol% of the surface, even though the overall bulk PDMS concentrations of the block copolymers is 6% or less. This result suggests that the bulk property of degradable polyesters is essentially unchanged due to the high surface segregation of PDMS.

  • An induction motor can be controlled like a separately excited do motor by field oriented control(or vector control). In vector control, Because the transformation of the stator's 3-phase current into two orthogonal current is required. the control scheme is complicated. But, Yamamura proposed a field acceleration method(FAM) without the phase transformation. FAM simplify an implementation control scheme for induction motors. In this paper, the analysis of transient phenomena of a squirrel-cage induction motor was achieved by the spiral vector method and the phase segregation method. It simplified control schemes more than those of vector control.

  • This study shows that catalytic activity of bimetallic RhPt nanoparticle arrays under CO oxidation can be tuned by varying the size and composition of nanoparticles. The tuning of size of RhPt nanoparticles was achieved by changing concentration of rhodium and platinum precursors in one-step polyol synthesis. Two-dimensional RhPt bimetallic nanoparticle arrays in different size and composition were prepared through Langmuir-Blodgett thin film technique. CO oxidation was carried out on these two-dimensional nanoparticle arrays, revealing higher activity on the smaller nanoparticles compared to the bigger nanoparticles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results indicate the preferential surface segregation of Rh compared to Pt on the smaller nanoparticles, which is consistent with the thermodynamic analysis. Because the catalytic activity is associated with differences in the rates of $O_2$ dissociative adsorption between Pt and Rh, this paper suppose that the surface segregation of Rh on the smaller bimetallic nanoparticles is responsible for the higher catalytic activity in CO oxidation. This result suggests a control mechanism of catalytic activity via synthetic approaches of colloid nanoparticles, with possible application in rational design of nanocatalysts.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the environmental privacy on the perspective of integration and segregation of spatial areas in facilities for the elderly, through investigating required environmental privacy at each hierarchical space, the contextual situation and counterplan for the privacy. For the study, a content analysis for 35 foreign academic journal articles published from 1990 to August of 2013 was conducted. The results of the study were as follows: First, four hierarchical spaces had somewhat integrated characteristics as being required various types of privacy beyond the original features of each space. Especially semi-public and public spaces were needed the privacy similar to in private or semi-private areas. Second, the contextual situation for the privacy was mainly from undesirable access and psychological pressure of other residents, staff and etc. to the residents' personal space, stuff, and behaviors. The other was from no space (no sitting) or no equipments for privacy. Third, the counterplan for privacy was categorized as improvements of physical environments and making defensible space or keeping physical distance of the elderly. It is suggested that welfare of the aged act in Korea about the room capacity for the elderly facilities needs to be reconsidered for the privacy in their individual rooms and the privacy in semi-public and public area must be considered to make the behavior scope of the elderly extended.

  • To invetigate the impurity distribution in GaAs crystal grown by horizontal Bridgman method, we constructd the mathematical model describing heat transfer, mass transfer and fluid flow n transient growth of GaAs. Galerkin finite element method and implicit time integration were used to solve the equations and simulate the transient growth. The concentration distribution is similar to the case of diffusion controlled growth when Gr - 0. With the increase of Gr the concentration profile is distroted and the minimum solute concentration appears near the interface. As solidification prosceeds, interface deflection increases steadily and transverse segregation increases until mixing by flow becomes steady. The axial segregation increases with solidification. But, with high intensity of flow axial segregation becomes steady after short transient. At small and large Gr the result showed a good agreememt with the prediction Smith and Scheil.

  • Haploid system by anther culture allows the development of homozygous lines when doubled. The response of anther culture to Basta (glufosinate) resistance was investigated on transgenic plants (cv. Anjungbyeo) in order to identify inheritance of bar gene associated with Basta. Most of the regenerated transgenic plants were sterile, and only a few plants produced viable seeds ($A_1$) in the greenhouse. The bar gene was analysis by PCR in basta resistant transgenic plant ($TA_0$). The transgenic seeds ($A_1$) were significantly germinated in Basta solution compared with non-transformed seeds. As a result of anther culture, in regenerated haploid plants, segregation ratio was 1:1 in five of eight cross combinations. In diploid plants, segregation ratio was 1:1 in seven of eight cross combinations. Although there was some differences in the cross combinations, most of the combinations had 1:1 segregation ratio which supports the theory. The difference may be a result of the small sample size or the difference of anther culture response caused by genotypic difference. Hence, when many cross combinations were anther-cultured the results would support the theory.

  • Austenitic stainless steels have been widely used for various systems of nuclear power plants. Among these stainless steels, small pipes with diameter less than 14 inch have been produced in the form of seamless pipe. Annealing and cooling process during the manufacturing process can affect corrosion properties of seamless stainless steels. Therefore, 12 inch-diameter of as-received 304L stainless steel pipe was annealed and aged in this study. Intergranular corrosion resistance was evaluated by ASTM A262 Practice A, C, and E methods. The degree of sensitization was determined using a DL-EPR test. U-bend method in an autoclave was used to evaluate the SCC resistance in 0.01 M $Na_2S_4O_6$ or 40% NaOH solution at $340^{\circ}C$. As-received specimen showed relatively high degree of sensitization and intergranular corrosion rate. Carbon segregation was also observed near grain boundaries. Annealing treatment could give the dissolution of segregated carbon into the matrix. Aging treatment could induce segregation of carbon and finally form carbides. Microstructural analysis confirmed that high intergranular corrosion rate of the as-received seamless pipe was due to micro-galvanic corrosion between carbon segregation and grains.
