Clay-coated rice seeds (clay-coated seeds A and B) were directly sown on dry paddy and their growth and yield were compared with the normal drill-sown seeds on dry flat paddy. In clay-coated seeds, germination was 1 day earlier and the emergence rate was higher up to 5% than that of normal drill-sown seeds. But the apparent number of seedling stand per $m^2$ was lower than that of normal drill-sown seeds, which is due to the smaller amount of seeding in clay-coated seeds. At the early growth stage, the plant height of clay-coated seeds A was taller than that of drill-sown seeds, while the plant height of clay-coated seeds B was 0.7 cm shorter than that of drill-sown seeds. At the late growth stage, however, the difference was insignificant in both cases. The maximum tillering stage was 10 days earlier in drill-sown seeds. Lodging index was the lowest in clay-coated seeds B and there was no difference between clay-coated seeds A and drill-sown seeds. The ratio of stem base weight, culm diameter and culm wall thickness were higher in clay-coated seeds, while the lower internodes (4th, 5th and 6th) length was shorter in claycoated seeds than in drill-sown seeds. In clay-coated seeds, the number of panicle per $m^2$ was smaller, while the number of spikelet per panicle was a little larger than in drill-sown seeds. The rate of ripened grain and brown rice 1,000 grain weight were lower in the clay-coated seeds, thus the yield was $98{\sim}99%$ level of drill-sown seeds. Considering that the amount of seeding in clay-coated seeds was two-thirds of that in drill-sown seeds, it is expected that clay coating method could become an additional technique for direct seeding cultivation.
Soybean is one of the world's most widely cultivated food crops, and soybean seeds are supplied from national seed resources in Korea. However, the transmission of seed-borne diseases through infected soybean seeds is problematic. Among these diseases, soybean seed decay is caused by Diaporthe spp. Infecting the pods, and the infected seeds show rotting symptoms. Most diseased seeds are removed during the selection process; however, it is difficult to distinguish infected seeds that do not display symptoms. Hence, a sequencebased method was devised to screen Diaporthe-infected seeds. Based on the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribe spacer (ITS) region of the pathogen, a primer was designed to distinguish the infection from other soybean seed pathogens. As a result of the comparison between healthy and Diaporthe-diseased seeds by using the primers, Diaporthe was detected only in the diseased seeds. Therefore, it is possible to distribute healthy soybean seeds by detecting Diaporthe-diseased seeds at the genetic level using the Diaporthe-specific primers.
Studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of priming and preimbibition on gerraination of unscarified and KOH-scarified zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) seeds, respectively. Germi-nation percentages at 35˚C of seeds primed in $KNO_3$ and Ca($NO_3$)$_2$ were significantly higher than that of untreated seeds. The optimum conditions for priming unscarified seeds were in aerated $KNO_3$ solution at O4 M for 4 days at 20˚C. No additional benefit of $GA_3$ on increasing germination was not found in seed priming with solution of $KNO_3$ + $GA_3$ or in seeds preimbibed with $GA_3$ after priming. Scarified seeds preimbibed with distilled water(DW) for 4 days at 20˚C germinated higher and with fewer days to 50% of total germination(T 50) than untreated seeds. Preimbibition with $GA_3$ solution at 50 ppm for 4 days at 5, 10, 15 and 20˚C enabled up to 97% of seeds to germinate and reduced days to T 50 about 1.1 to 1.2 days at 35˚C Especially, seeds preimbibed with $GA^2$˚$_3_2_1$$\times$ had greatly higher germination and lower T 50 than untreated or DW-preimbibibed seeds at 30˚C, which is inadequate to germination in general. Preimbibed seed performance was unchanged after storage at room temperature for 50 days. Seeds preimbibed with GA $_3$ had higher rate of seedling emergence and faster growth of shoot than untreated seeds after sowing at 30˚C in growing medium in growth chamber.

To furnish basic data for the utilizatin of camellia(Camellia japonica L.) seeds as a raw material of industrial products, major chemical components of camellia and defatted camellia seeds were investigated. The moisture, crude ash, crude fat and crude protein contents of camellia seeds were 4.06%, 1.83%, 65.75% and 8.44%, respectively. Defatted camellia seeds indicates that it contains 10.31% moisture, 5.28% crude ash and 17.49% crude protein while no crude fat was detected. The curde ginseng saponin, crude saikosaponin and red ginseng saponin contents of camellia seeds were 108.0mg%, 0.4mg% and 40.3mg%, respectively. Total amino acid contents of camellia seeds and defatted camellia seeds were 7,851mg% and 13,002mg%, respectively, and the major amino acids were glutamic acid, arginine, aspartic acid and leucine. The ratio of essential/total amino acid of camellia seeds was 0.29.

To obtain basic information for the quality evaluation, the introduced or domestic sesame seeds were investigated to measure proximate components (crude protein, ash, mineral and oil) and isolated by preparative HPLC system for lignan contents. Although crude protein contents were the highest in Sudan sesame seeds, lipid, ash and mineral contents were not significantly(p<0.05) different between introduced and domestric sesame seeds. Unsaturated fatty acids such as oleic and linoleic acids were the highest in the domestic sesame seeds. The Mg content of domestic sesame seeds also was larger than that of introduced sesame seeds. A Ca content of domestic sesame seeds, however, was significantly (p<0.05) lower than that of China. Lignan contents, the most important component known as antioxidant, were significantly (p<0.05) higher in domestic sesame seeds than other sesame seeds tested. Our findings suggest that domestic sesame seed has the best quality in terms of the functional components.
An experiment was carried out to find out the changes in morphology, sugars, and $\alpha$-amylase activity during the priming of rice seeds (Oryza sativa L. cv. 'Ilpumbyeo'). For priming, seeds were soaked in -0.6 MPa PEG solution at 15$^{\circ}C$ for 4 days (properly primed) and at $25^{\circ}C$ for 4 and 10 days (over-primed) and dried at room temperature. The size of coleoptile and differentiated leaves of properly primed seeds were bigger and coleoptile was separated from the other part of embryo compared with non-primed and over-primed seeds. As priming of seeds advanced, compound starch grains in the endosperm disintegrated into tiny starch granules, and small holes were found in the tiny starch granules and a cavities developed between embryo and endosperm. The radicle and plumule of properly primed germinating seeds developed faster than non-primed and overprimed germinating seeds. Sucrose, maltose, and raffinose contents of properly primed seeds decreased, while content of glucose and fructose and $\alpha$-amylase activity increased. However, sugar content and $\alpha$-amylase activity of over-primed seeds were lower compared with non-primed seeds or properly primed seeds.

To improve germination and growth of forages of hill pasture seeds of several forages were osmotically primed with polyethylene glycol (PEG) under different PEG concentrations, treatment periods, and temperatures. Seeds were coated with several materials, and tested for germination. The best primed or coated seeds in germination tests were surface sow on hilly area. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. Osmotic priming with PEG accelerated germination of forages and reduced time taken for germination. 2. Germinability was best when the seeds of Tama ryegrass or orchardgrass were treated for 6-9 days at 30g PEG1100 ml water, red clover or white clover for 3, or 9 days in 20g PEG1100 ml water at $10^{\circ}C$. 3. Priming seeds of Tama ryegrass or orchardgrass in 30% PEG solution for 6 days, and seeds of red clover or white clover in 20% PEG solution for 6 days at $15^{\circ}C$ were most effective in germination, similar to priming at $10^{\circ}C$ . 4. Priming seeds of Tama ryegrass at 15C, and orchardgrass, red clover, or white clover at $10^{\circ}C$ were effective in germination than priming at other temperatures. 5. Osmotic priming with PEG accelerated germination of forages compared to coated seeds in Petri-dishes, while coated seeds germinated more slowly, but showed better emergence and superior growth to those of primed or intact seeds in the field. 6. Priming seeds increased yield slightly, and coating seeds significantly increased its yield on hilly area.
A seed coating system was developed to screen non-viable seeds in the Brassicaceae. The crops studied were radish, chinese cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sprout. Sinapine leaked more from artificially deteriorated seeds than non-deteriorated seeds. Seed coating with cellulose was to trap the sinapine leakage in the non-viable Brassicaceae vegetable seeds. The seeds were first hydrated, then coated with cellulose powder to capture the leakage. Coated seeds were dried, then sorted two fractions-fluorescent seeds and non-fluorescent seeds under the UV light. The ratio of the fluorescent seeds were higher in bad seedlot than good one. The germination rate were increased 3∼35% by eliminating the fluorescent seeds in tested Brassica vegetable seeds. Sowing non-fluorescent seeds resulted in a greater percent normal seedling than non-coated seeds in all seedlots. The fluorescent seeds contained a high percentage of the dead and abnormal seedlings.

The experiment was conducted to evaluate rice growth and yield as affected by different coating and covering materials such as a iron, silicate, iron and silicate mixture of rice seeds in farmer's rice growing field. The tiller number was 36.7 at iron-coated seeds, 32.8 at silicate-covered seeds, 30.3 at iron and silicate mixture coated seeds and 30.2 at untreated control in 44days after seeding. The seedling height was 38.2cm of iron and silicate mixture, 37.7cm of untreated control, 36cm of iron-coated and 35.7cm of silicate covered seeds in 43days after seeding. At 75days after seeding rice tiller number was 153 of iron-coated seeds, 152 of silicate-covered seeds, 147 of untreated seeds and 141 of iron and silicate mixture-coated seeds and also there were different plant height growth of 87.4cm in silicate-covered seeds, 85.7cm in iron and silicate mixture, 85.4cm in untreated control and 83.0cm in iron-coated seeds. The panicle length was of 21.0cm in iron and silicate mixture coated seeds, 20.8cm in silicate covered seeds, 20.7cm in untreated control seeds and 20.6cm in iron-coated seeds. The panicle number was 464 at iron-coated seeds, 404 at untreated control seeds, 427 at silicate-covered seeds and 412 at iron and silicate mixture coated seeds. The spikelet number per m2 was of 32,503 in iron-coated seeds, 31,813 in silicate-covered seeds, 29,646 in untreated control, 28,896 in iron and silicate mixture coated seeds. The ripened ratio of rice grain was of 94.5% at iron-coated seeds, 93.9% at iron and silicate mixture coated seeds, 93.6% at silicate covered seeds and 93.2% at untreated control seeds. The rice yield was of 591kg/10a at iron-coated seeds, 580kg/10a at silicate-covered seeds, 571kg/10a at iron and silicate mixture-coated seeds and 539kg/10a at untreated control.
Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was used to classify normal and artificially aged nonviable corn (Zea mays L., cv. 'Suwon19') seeds. The spectra at 1100-2500nm were scanned with normal and artificially aged single seeds and analyzed by principle component analysis (PCA). To discriminate normal seeds from artificially aged seeds, a calibration modeling set was developed with a discriminant partial least square 2 (PLS 2) method. The calibration model derived from PLS 2 resulted in 100% classification accuracy of normal and artificially aged (aged) seeds from the raw, the 1st and 2nd derivative spectra. The prediction accuracy of the unknown normal seeds was 88, 100 and 97% from the raw, the $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ derivative spectra, and that of the unknown aged seeds was 100% from all the raw, the $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ derivative spectra, respectively. The results showed a possibility to separate corn seeds into viable and non-viable using NIR spectroscopy.
