This study was conducted to investigate the physiological responses of newly-germinated seedlings of Fraxinus rhynchophylla Hance, Zelkova serrata (Thunb.) Makino, Betula costata Trautv. and Quercus variabilis Blume to open-field experimental warming. The seedlings in the warmed plots were warmed with $2.7^{\circ}C$ higher air temperature than those in the control plots using infrared heaters since April, 2015. Physiological responses (stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, chlorophyll content and net photosynthetic rate) to experimental warming varied with the species and the time of the measurement. Stomatal conductance ($mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) tended to decrease for F. rhynchophylla (Control: $158.97{\pm}42.76$; Warmed: $42.07{\pm}8.24$), Z. serrata (Control: $170.53{\pm}27.22$; Warmed: $101.17{\pm}42.27$) and B. costata (Control: $249.93{\pm}47.39$; Warmed: $150.73{\pm}26.52$). Transpiration rate ($mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) also decreased for F. rhynchophylla (Control: $4.08{\pm}0.62$; Warmed: $1.74{\pm}0.39$), Z. serrata (Control: $4.32{\pm}0.44$; Warmed: $3.24{\pm}1.14$) and B. costata (Control: $6.21{\pm}0.38$; Warmed: $4.66{\pm}0.28$). However, warming exhibited only minimal effects on stomatal conductance and transpiration rate of Q. variabilis seedlings. Chlorophyll content increased by the warming treatment while the effect of warming was not significant on net photosynthetic rate, since the warming treatment had a weak influence for changing net photosynthetic rate.
This study was conducted to investigate whether 1) photosynthetic pigments(chlorophylls and carotenoids) are formed in dodder plant(Cuscuta australis), 2) there are any characteristics in the pigment biosynthesis, compared to that of other normal plants, and 3) dodder responds to some herbicides having target site on chloroplast. 1. Chlorophyll content of dodder tendrill grown under a natural daylight was 9 times and 50 times lower than that of field bindweed stem and leaf, respectively. 2. The photosynthetic pigment contents varied in different tissues, being higher in a apical region than in a lower region of seedling or tendrill. Chlorophyll wasn't almost observed below the 4th internode from the upper. 3. Pigment contents were greatly dependent on light intensity so that there were 4 to 6 times difference among light conditions. When the shoot containning low pigment contents under natural light, was incubated in growth chamber with various light intensities, the pigment contents were increased by 3 times of initial contents at about 97${\mu}E$$m^{-2}s^{-1}$PAR. While the change in pigment contents was not observed at above 450${\mu}E$$m^{-2}s^{-1}$PAR 4. Exogenous supply of 5mM 5-aminolevulinic acid increased protochlorophyllide by 7 times and 1.4 times in the etiolated shoot from field bindweed rhizome and in dodder stem, respectively, showing that dodder relatively has a low response to 5-aminolevulinic acid. 5. Pigment loss was observed in the treatment of paraquat, norflurazon, oxyfluorfen and diuron, and protoporphyrin IX was accumulated by oxyfluorfen as in normal plants Based on above results, several chracteristics of pigment biosynthesis in dodder seem to be summerized as follows. Photosynthetic pigment biosynthesis in Cuscuta australis runs even in low level. The pigment contents is differentially distributed in different regions and their contents seem significantly to be controlled by light intensities. Especially, chloroplast rapidly tends to degenerate with the development of tissue. Some herbicides having target site on chloroplast induce damage to dodder stem but are unlikely to control it well in field, except paraquat, due to low chloroplast activity and parasitic mode of nutrition.
Tomatoes are flooded differently 0, 5, 10 and 15 ㎝, according to the developing stages such as transplanting stage under the condition of green house. Along with this, they are treated according to the time condition such as 6, 12, 24, 48 and 120 hours. The results obtained are summarized as follows. As the depth of flooding got deeper and the hours got longer, plant height, number of leaves, shoot and root decreased significantly. Flowering was possible for 24 hours in the flooding of 0 ㎝, for 6 hours in $5{\sim}10$ ㎝, but not possible after 6 hours in 15 ㎝. Without regard to the depth of flooding, adventitious root came into being before or after 48 hours of the treatment. Root activity diminished gradually as hours of treatment went by, but diminished rapidly over the depth of 5 ㎝. Chlorophyll content decreased similarly as in the case of root activity. Diffusion resistance of stomata cell increased as hours of treatment passed and depth increased. Photosynthesis and respiration diminished according as the hours and depth of treatment increased. Respiration diminished a little gradually but photosynthesis weakened greatly as the depth of treatment became greater and after 48 hours of treatment. Diseases occurred remarkably in proportion to the depth of treatment and the increase of hours. The possibility of preventing by means of insecticide treatment showed the same tendency as in the seedling stage. But its effect was not significant. After 120 hours yields could not be expected because tomatoes died without regard to the depth of flooding. Instead of the depth, numbers of fruits per plant decrease of individuals or variation of average weight of a fruit was recognized. Especially average weight increased in accordance with the increase of the depth. There was positive correlation between all the characters, such as plant height, number of leaves, fresh weight, chlorophyll content, root activity and yield traits, but negative correlation between these and epinastic curvature, diffusion resistance and adventitious root.
Tomatoes are flooded differently 0, 5, 10 and 15cm, according to the developing stages such as flowering stage under the condition of greenhouse. Along with this, they are treated according to the time condition such as 6, 12, 24, 48 and 120 hours. The results obtained are summarized as follows. Plant height decreased in the depth of $0{\sim}10cm$ for over 48 hours, in the depth of 15cm for over 24 hours. Number of leaves was the same as in control, and it decreased over. Number of flowers and fruit setting of individuals decreased conspicuously according as the depth and the hours got greater and longer. Adventitious root occurred remarkably in the depth of $0{\sim}10cm$, for over 24 hours and in the depth of 15cm, 12 hours. Epinastic curvature increased greatly as the depth and the hours got greater and longer. Diffusion resistance of stomata cell increased as the depth and the hours got greater and longer. Diseases occurred conspicuously as the hours of flooding got longer rather than as the depth greater. The preventing of diseases caused by insecticide was observed, but it was not greater than in the seedling and transplanting stage. Fertilization was effective in the case of increasing the weight of shoot. Number of fruits per plant did not decrease in the depth of 0cm up to 24 hours, but decreased on the deeper level of flooding and increased as the hours got longer. Moreover with the exception of 120 hours per respective depth of the treatment, average weight of a fruit got greater as the depth and the hours got greater and longer. In the case of epinastic curvature and diffusion resistance, there was negative correlation between all the other investigated characters and positive correlation between weight of a fruits and average weight of a fruit.
The effects of priming with different polyethylene glycol (PEG 6, 000) solutions on the germination, emergence characteristics and early plant growth in rice, barley and wheat were investigated. Rice, barley and wheat seeds were subjected to various priming conditions of osmotic potentials (-0. 75, -1.00 and -1.50 MPa) of PEG, and incubation period were 5 days at 25, 20, 2$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. The percentage of water absorption was highest in barely, and lowest in rice, and all the treatments enhanced water absorption in barley, but showed no significant effects in rice and wheat. Respiration quotient was lower than none PEG treatment seeds, and those of barley and wheat were higher than rice regardless of PEG concentration, and that of rice increased with high PEG concentration. Total germination percentage of osmoconditioning seeds with PEG was higher than that of none treatment seed, and those of barley and wheat were significant. The artificially deteriorated seeds with PEG treatment seeds after ageing treatment could recover to nearly the same germination level as that of the control seeds. The effects of coating polymer were higher than osmoconditioning with PEG, and germination characteristics in rice showed varietal difference at PVP and waterlock at recoated seeds after PEG treatment. Osmoconditioning with PEG reduced mean germination and emergence time, but there was no difference among PEG concentrations. The plant height of PEG treaed seed in rice was taller and those of barely and wheat showed varietal difference, and those of polymer-coated seed after PEG treatment were different among the polymers. The dry weight of PEG treatment were different among the crops, and those were increased with the high PEG concentration. The emergence percentage of PEG-treated seed were higher than none-treated seed, and those were decreased with the increased PEG concentration, and the highest emergence percentage of rice, barley and wheat were 90, 50 and 50% soil moisture content, respectively. The time to emergence in rice was longer than barley and wheat, and those in rice was shortened in high soil moisture content, and barley and wheat were shortened in low soil moisture content.
Antimicrobial activity of 6 phosphate compounds as $H_3PO_3$, $H_3PO_4$, $K_3PO_4$, $K_2HPO_4$, $KH_2PO_4$ and $NH_4H_2PO_4$ against Phytophthora capsici JHAW 1-2 and Colletotrichum acutatum JC24 was investigated in this study. Inhibitory effect on zoospore release, zoosporangia germination and zoospore germination was superior than mycelial growth. Among 6 compounds, $H_3PO_3$ and $H_3PO_4$ showed the best antimicrobial activity against P. capsici JHAW 1-2. Diseases controlling activity of the phosphate compounds tested on seedling and fruit of pepper against Phytophthora blight was also better than those against anthracnose. When $H_3PO_3$ was applied to the pepper seedlings at a concentration of $100{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$, severe phytotoxicity was occurred. However, with applying $10{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ of $H_3PO_3$ showed 100% the disease control efficacy. In case of $100{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$$H_3PO_4$ application showed excellent antimicrobial activity against P. capsici JHAW 1-2, and 56.7% of the disease control efficacy with no phytotoxicity. To investigate the control efficacy against anthracnose, conidia suspension was inoculated with non-wound and wound inoculation method on pepper fruit. Among 6 compounds, only $100{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ of $H_3PO_3$ and $H_3PO_4$ had a activity of more than 70%, but the control activity on other treatments was minimal or unacceptable.
This research was conducted to develop seedling production techniques in flat oyster, Ostrea dense lamellosa. The cultivation of larvae, artificial spat and spats collection in natural conditions rate were examined. In the mass culture tank (3 tons), average growth rates of the D Shape larvae of initial shell length (153.4 ㎛) and shell height (153.4 ㎛) were 202.6% and 212.9% at 16 days and 227.1%, 241.8% at 20 days, respectively. Instantaneous death and survival rate of the larvae were 0.160 and 54.8% at 16 days and 0.057 and 43.2% at 20 days, respectively. Collection rate of flat oyster from bottom using various collectors with oyster shell, scallop shell, ark shell and PVC plates were 32.9%, 24.1%, 16.8% and 10.0%, respectively. and the greatest collecting rate was 131.9 individuals/shell (32.9%) in laid collectors on the bottom. The collecting rate of the oyster larvae were better in laid collectors on the bottom 83.8 individuals/collection than in the suspended string 54.2 individuals/collection. in all collecting substrates. Early spats settled on collectors were grew to 2.38 $\pm$ 0.97 ㎜ in shell length and 2.16 $\pm$ 0.86 ㎜ In shell height at 26 days. The spats were grew to 28.58 $\pm$ 2.39 ㎜ in shell length and 31.65 $\pm$ 2.03 ㎜ in shell height during the 4 month mid-term cultivation. In the period of cultivation, the mean number of spats attached to collectors were 10.3 individuals at oyster shells, 5.8 scallop shells, 4.0 ark shells and 1.5 PVC plates, respectively.
This study was carried out to evaluate the efficiency of white shading agent for reduction of greenhouse air temperature and to develop cost-effective cooling strategies for strawberry seedling production during hot seasons. Experiment results showed that solar radiation ($W/m^2$) was reduced by 14~17% and 33~37% for 15% and 35% white wash shading treatments, respectively, in black shading net treatment solar radiation was reduced by 39~44% compared to non-shaded treatment. Measured greenhouse air temperatures in 15% and 35% white wash shading treatments were $38.4^{\circ}C$ and $36.5^{\circ}C$, respectively, whereas in black shading net covered greenhouses air temperature was $35.1^{\circ}C$, thereby 35% and 15% shading treatments showed 3.3 and $1.9^{\circ}C$ higher air temperatures than black net shading treatment. Crown diameter of strawberry plants in black net shading treatment was 7.5mm, and in 15% and 35% white wash shading treatments were 8.6mm and 8.3mm, respectively. Strawberry transplants grown in 35% white wash shading treatment produced the highest above ground fresh weight(7.8g), followed by 15% white wash shading(6.7g) and black net shading treatments(5.8g). Also, both 15% and 35% white wash shading treatments produced higher root fresh weight(4.1g and 4.3g) compare to black net shading treatments(2.7g).
This study was conducted to elucidate the cultural and pathogenic characteristics of Cladosporium cucumerinum PT1 and resistance of 81 commercial cucumbers (Cucumis sativus). Cucumber leaves and fruits appeared as scab were collected from a plastic film house located in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi-province, Korea in late March, 2015. A casual fungus was isolated from the diseased fruits on potato dextrose agar and it was identified as C. cucumerinum PT1 based on the morphological characteristics. To find out the effect of wounding and fruit size on the development of cucumber scab, small (<10 cm long), medium (10 to 20 cm long), and large (>20 cm long, commercially mature fruit) size cucumber fruits were harvested, C. cucumerinum PT1 pathogens were inoculated with a single droplet of suspension ($1{\times}10^5$ spores/ml) on wounded or unwounded cucumber fruits. Small fruits were completely damaged with showing severe water-soaking symptoms and fast pathogen growth regardless of wounded or unwounded. Meanwhile slight water-soaking symptoms on medium and large size fruits occurred and disease development into plant tissues was observed only on wounded fruits. Disease resistance of 81 commercial cucumber cultivars was evaluated on third-stage seedlings and small fruits by inoculating suspension ($1{\times}10^5$ spores/ml) of C. cucumerinum PT1. As a result, mini and pickling cultivar groups were resistant, 'Cheoeumcheoreom' cultivar was symptomless and the other cultivars were resistant to medium resistant. On the other hand, most of cucumber cultivars belonging to the other groups were susceptible. Disease resistance of cucumber against cucumber scab was significantly different among cultivars and a few cucumber cultivars showed different disease resistant responses to two bioassay methods using seedlings and small fruits. Therefore, to screen scab resistance in cucumber, a test using both fruits and seedlings is advisable. We think that the selected resistant cultivars can be used to control cucumber scab effectively under the farmhouse condition.
Appropriate soil temperature and early planting of potato is very important for the successful potato-soybean cropping system in central region of South Korea. This experiment was carried out to determine the effect of mulching materials on the growth and yield of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). Five different mulch treatments were had been applied on an upland soil as follows ; no mulch (NM), transparent film (TF), transparent film + additional transparent film (TF + ATF), black film (BF), and black film + additional transparent film (ATF). In the period of sowing time to removing additional films, mean soil temperature of the treatments was in the order of TF+ATF > TF > BR+ATF > BF as $20.3^{\circ}C$ > $18.5^{\circ}C$ > $16.1^{\circ}C$ > $15.4^{\circ}C$, respectively and that of NM was $13.8^{\circ}C$. The accumulated soil temperature was TF > NM > BF during the removing additional films to earthing at inter-tillage. On the changes in the soil temperature during a whole day, the temperature in the BF was lower than NM during around 18:00 PM to 12:00 NM, while NM was higher than BF in the time period of 10:00AM to 21:00PM. The sequence of potato sprout emergence was 15 > 18 > 20 > 22 days of TF+ATF, TF, BF+ATF, and BF, respectively and that of NM was 24 days. Comparing to the NM, potato sprout emergence was observed on the TF+ATF treated plot as early as 9 days. At 10 days before harvest, the significant difference in the tuber dry weight had been observed and the sequence tuber weight was in the order of TF > TF+ATF > BF+ATF > BF > NM. The potato yields of TF, TF+ATF, and BF+ATF were increased of 40.7, 37.3, and 22% as compared to NM ($2,805kg\;10a^{-1}$), but almost same yield in the BF. The differences of tuber dry weight and potato yields was co-related with the temperature rise of soil by the application of mulching materials on soil. Based on these results, application of mulching film had been very effective to increase the tuber size and the yield of potato by the temperature rise during seedling stage of potato. Transparent mulching was better than black mulching especially for the emergence of sprout of potato in relation to minimizing cooling injury.
