  • Several physical and chemical methods have been used for remediation contaminated by oils. However the cost was very high and secondary pollution rose during treating. The purpose of this study was to comprision TPH (total petroleum hydrocarbon) removal from artificially contaminated soil by diesel with and without seeding anaerobic digested sludge. After 120 days of overall at 35$^{\circ}C$, removal efficiency of TPH with seeding sludge was 2-3 times higher than blank. Also, the more amount seeding sludge, TPH removal efficiency and CH$_4$ content more obtained. It was sad that seeding of anaerobic digested sludge was a good method for enhancing TPH removal efficiency without increasing operating cost. Sulfate, nitrate-reducing, methanogenic condition were evaluated for alkane, isoprenoid as target contaminated soil.

  • The objective of this research was to produce sod by box seeding for zoysiagrass or by vegetative propagation for zoysiagrass and manilagrass.1 Various ratio of peatmoss to sand(v /v) were prepared to find idea[ medium for fast and light weight sod production. Then, the days required for sod formation, the effect of growth regulators on the growth of turfgrass, and the various storage methods for winter keeping of sods were also investigated. 1.The mixed medium of sand and peatmoss(v /v, 1 : 2) showed more biomass production than that of sand. 2.In comparison of seeding rate of zoysiagrass, the amount of log /$m^2$ was most effective in the fast and dense sod formation. The amount of 20g /$m^2$ also showed fast sod formation. But, it resulted in weak plant and less tillering. During April to June, about 100 days were required to form sod with seeding rate of 5g /$m^2$ regardless of seeding time. Whereas 80 days were required to form sod in the rate log /$m^2$, which was 20 days shorter than that of 5g /$m^2$. 3.More than 85% of shoots in sod stored in field or plastic house during the winter time resumed the growth in good appearance after transplanting. The whole covering of ground with sod resulted in less weeds and faster formation of lawn. 4.Vegetative propagation of manilagrass showed about 7 to 15 days faster formation of sod than that of zoysiagrass. Application of GA increased shoot growth and BA increased the total number of tillering. However, the effects of the combined application of GA and BA were negligable.

  • This research was initiated to investigate the revegetation characteristics under the seeding amount treatments of cool-season turfgrasses on the disturbed slope. 4 different seeding amounts of cool-season turfgrasses (0.0 $g/m^2$, 1.5 $g/m^2$, 3.0 $g/m^2$, 6.0 $g/m^2$) with the same seeding amounts of native woody (Rhus chinensis, Albizzia julibrissin) and herbaceous plants (Lotus corniculatus var. japonicus, Dianthus sinensis, Aster yomena) were treated with 3 replications on the experimental disturbed slope. Data such as soil hardness (mm), moisture content (%), surface coverage rate (%), the number of each germinating plant and plant height were analyzed. There were no statistic differences observed in the soil hardness and the soil moisture content while a significant difference was observed in the surface coverage rates. The surface coverage rates were higher in 3.0 $g/m^2$ and 6.0 $g/m^2$ plots compared to the rest two plots of cool-season turfgrasses. However, the emergence of native woody and herbaceous plants was relatively low in 3.0 $g/m^2$ and 6.0 $g/m^2$ plots of high seeding amounts of cool-season turfgrasses. This result indicated that high seeding amounts of cool-season turfgrasses could decrease the emergence of native woody and herbaceous plants. We concluded that 1.5 g~3.0 $g/m^2$ seeding amounts of cool-season turfgrasses was optimum level for the balanced emergence of cool-season turfgrasses, native woody and herbaceous plants in the viewpoint of the ecological disturbed slope revegetation.

  • Purpose: The prognosis for gastric cancer with peritoneal seeding is very poor, and the role of surgical intervention is limited. We evaluated the effect of radical removal of primary and metastatic lesions on survival in gastric cancer with peritoneal seeding. Materials and Methods: From May 1989 to March 1999 at Kosin University Gospel Hospital, 115 patients revealed gastric cancer with peritoneal seeding but without liver or lung metastasis and without follow-up loss. The study group included 86 patients who underwent surgery for radical removal of primary gastric and metastatic peritoneal lesions. The control group included 29 patients who experienced incomplete removal of primary or metastatic lesions. Both groups received intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy using mytomycin or cisplatin, and 25 patients underwent postoperative intravenous chemotherapy. Results: The median survival times in the study and the control groups were 13 months and 4 months, respectively (p<0.0001). The 1-year, 2-year, and 5-year survival rates were, respectively, $50.6\%,\;18.1\%$, and $11.3\%$ in the study group and $14.8\%,\;3.7\%$ and $0\%$ in the control group (p<0.0001). In the study group, neither postoperative intravenous chemotherapy nor microscopic invasion of the resection margin had any effect on survival, but intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy and degree of peri-toneal seeding, especially the amount of peritoneal seeding, had an effect on survival. In the control group, neither intraperitoneal nor intravenous chemotherapy had any effect on survival, but resection of the primary gastric lesion improved survival. Conclusion: Radical removal of primary gastric and metastatic peritoneal lesions improved the survival rate for gastric cancer with peritoneal seeding. However, a randomized prospective study is needed to correctly evaluate the effect of intraperitoneal or intravenous chemotherapy.

  • The possible experimental time for cloud seeding was analyzed in South Korea. Rain gauge and radar precipitation data collected from September 2017 to August 2022 in from the three main target stations of cloud seeding experimentation (Daegwallyeong, Seoul, and Boryeong) were analyzed. In this study, the assumption that rainfall and cloud enhancement originating from the atmospheric updraft is a necessary condition for the cloud seeding experiment was applied. First, monthly and seasonal means of the precipitation duration and frequency were analyzed and cloud seeding experiments performed in the past were also reanalyzed. Results of analysis indicated that the experiments were possible during a monthly average of 7,025 minutes (117 times) in Daegwallyeong, 4,849 minutes (81 times) in Seoul, and 5,558 minutes (93 times) in Boryeong, if experimental limitations such as the insufficient availability of aircraft is not considered. The seasonal average results showed that the possible experimental time is the highest in summer at all three stations, which seems to be owing to the highest precipitable water in this period. Using the radar-converted precipitation data, the cloud seeding experiments were shown to be possible for 970-1,406 hours (11-16%) per year in these three regions in South Korea. This long possible experimental time suggests that longer duration, more than the previous period of 1 hour, cloud seeding experiments are available, and can contribute to achieving a large accumulated amount of enhanced rainfall.

  • This study was conducted in 2014 in the Gangjin area of Jeonnam province for the purpose of confirming the potential of Kenaf as an alternative feed crop of rice. The weather and soil conditions were favorable and there was no adverse effect on the growth of Kenaf. The amount of seeding was given at 10 kg, 15 kg and 20 kg. As the seeding volume increased, plant height and dry matter yield increased, and stem diameter and number of nodes decreased. The highest growth rate was observed between 75 and 90 days from the date of planting(p<0.05). As the growth progressed, stem rate increased and leaf rate decreased(p<0.05). Increased amount of seeding and growth resulted in decreased CP and TDN and increased ADF and NDF, which resulted in the decreased economic value of Kenaf as a feed crop. The result of increasing the use of organic fertilizer to 20 kg and 30 kg was similar to increasing the amount of seeding. As organic fertilizer usage increased, dry matter yield and growth rate improved(p<0.05).

  • A field experiment was carried out to determine the effects of seeding methods and rates on the growth characteristics, forage yield and nutritive value of sorghum X sudangrass hybrid (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, cv. Pioneer 988) grown under application of animal manure in 1995. The application amount of animal manure were 40MT in cattle manure, 30MTha in swine and poultry manure. The methods and rates of seeding treated in this study were drill of 30kg, and broadcast of 30, 60 and 100kgha of seeding rates. The plant height was 180cm, 191cm and 204cm in cattle, swine and poultry manure, respectively. Plant height in the plot of drill was higher by about 15cm than those of broadcast plots. The dry matter(DM) yield was 7.73, 8.87 and 9.80MTha in cattle, swine and poultry manure, respectively. A significant higher forage yield was produced in the plot of drill, compared with broadcast(Pc0.05). DM yields in broadcast of 60kg and lOOkg of seeding rates were higher than that of 30kg of seeding rate of broadcast. However, no significant difference in forage yield was found between 60kg and IOOkg of seeding rates. The average DM yield was 11.16, 6.94, 8.26 and 8.83MTIha in drill(30kg), broadcast 30, 60 and 100kgIMT of seeding rates, respectively. The nutritive value of sorghum x sudangrass hybrid was very similar among treatments. The crude protein yields were 1,010kg in cattle manure, 1,180kg in swine manure, and 1,592kg in poultry manure. The protein yield was significantly high in the plot of drill. In conclusion, seeding by drill was recommended for forage production and protein yield of sorghumxsudangrass hybrid, and proper seeding rates were 30kg in drill and 60kg in broadcast. • National Institute of Meteorological Sciences has conducted a total 54 cloud seeding experiments with a silver iodide and calcium chloride using aircrafts from 2008 to 2018. The goal of the experiments is to improve the techniques of precipitation enhancement in Korea. The cloud seeding experiments using the silver iodide and calcium chloride were 36 and 18 times, respectively. During the cloud seeding experiments of the silver iodide and calcium chloride, the average values of total cloud amount for two kinds of seeding materials were 9.6 for and 8.1, respectively. The cloud type with the highest occurrence was Nimbostratus (Ns)-Stratus (St) (58%) in the silver iodide cloud seeding experiment. It was Altostratus (As)-Stratocumulus (Sc) (44%) in the calcium chloride cloud seeding experiment. Compared to probability of obtaining cloud seeding effect of the experiments using a leased aircraft, the probability using an atmospheric research aircraft increased from 43% to 63% in the silver iodide cloud seeding experiment and from 29% to 75% in the calcium chloride cloud seeding experiment. However, the increasing tendency was only shown during the one year experiment (2018). To get the meaningful statistical tendency of the cloud seeding effects, it is needed to implement many experiments in several years. Further we have to more clearly understand the characteristics of clouds developing in Korea and implement the cloud seeding experiments under a variety of weather conditions in order to develop the optimized precipitation enhancement technology in Korea.

  • This study was conducted to investigate suitable seeding rate under irrigation water-saving rice culture in ridge direct seeding on dry paddy during 1997~1998. Dongjinbyeo was seeded from 60 kg/ha to 120 kg/ha on silty loam condition. The number of irrigation from 3-leaf stage to complete drainage were 7.5 times and total amount of irrigation was 258.75 mm. The number of seedling stand rose with the increase of seeding rate, whereas the rate of seedling stand was decreased with the increase of it. Soil moisture tension was -2kPa at one day after stopped irrigation and lowered to -30kPa at five days after stopped irrigation. Leaf area index and shoot dry weight were increased with rising of seeding rate. Lodging index was increased with the rising of seeding rate, but lodging was not showed in field. Heading date, percent ripened grain and 1,000 grain weight had no difference with seeding rate, and number of spikelets per m$^2$ were highest at the rate of 100 kg/ha. Rice yield was increased by 9% at the seeding rate of 100 kg/ha and 4% at the rate of 80 kg/ha and 120 kg/ha compared with 60 kg/ha. Therefore, it was considered that appropriate seeding rate was 100 kg/ha under water-saving culture in ridge direct seeding on dry paddy.

  • Various seeding materials for cloud seeding are being used, and sodium chloride powder is one of them, which is commonly used. This study analyzed the experimental results of multi-aircraft cloud seeding in connection with Republic of Korea Air Force (CN235) and KMA/NIMS(Korea Meteorological Administration/National Institute of Meteorological Sciences) Atmospheric Research Aircraft. Powdered sodium chloride was used in CN235 for the first time in South Korea. The analysis of the cloud particle size distributions and radar reflectivity before and after cloud seeding showed that the growth efficiency of powdery seeding material in the cloud is slightly higher than that of hygroscopic flare composition in the distribution of number concentrations by cloud aerosol particle diameter (10 ~ 1000 ㎛). Considering the radar reflectivity, precipitation, and numerical model simulation, the enhanced precipitation due to cloud seeding was calculated to be a maximum of 3.7 mm for 6 hours. The simulated seeding effect area was about 3,695 km2, which corresponds to 13,634,550 tons of water. In the precipitation component analysis, as a direct verification method, the ion equivalent concentrations (Na+, Cl-, Ca2+) of the seeding material at the Bukgangneung site were found to be about 1000 times higher than those of other non-affected areas between about 1 and 2 hours after seeding. This study suggests the possibility of continuous multi-aircraft cloud seeding experiments to accumulate and increase the amount of precipitation enhancement.
