  • Seedborne fungus Bipolaris spicifera, which has not been previously reported in Korea, was detected from import-ed grass seeds in the country. The most frequently detected fungi from the seeds were Fusarium species, Ulocladium atrum, B. spicifera, Alternaria, and Cuvularia lunata among 17 different seed samples of the family Gramineae. Detection frequencies of B. spicifera were 11,8,5% in Bermuda grass, tall fescue, and mixed lawn grass imported from USA, respectively, and 9% in mixed lawn grass imported from Italy. This suggests that important seedborne pathogen could be spread between countries through seed sources. The pathogen was seed-transmitted causing damping-off of Bermuda grass seedlings and showed strong pathogenicity to vice, corn, Bermuda grass, sorghum, and tall fescue. However, it did not infect wheat and blue grass.

  • The incidence of fungi and their possible contribution to low vigour were examined in a collection of ginseng (Panax quiquefolius) seed from Ontario. When examined after one winter of stratification in the field and storage at 4f for five months in the laboratory, the collection exhibited low vigour (plant stand 16.7% of seeding rate six weeks after seeding) and high incidence (94%) of discolored or soft seed. Fungi isolated (and incidence) from 1,304 endosperm halves recovered from surface-sterilized seed were, in order of abundance, Fusarium rostrum (22.2%), Chaetomium crispuum (14.3%), Funriud oxysporum (9.0%), Fusarium sdani (9.0%), iwmor sp. (8.4%), Alternaria sp. (8.1%), Zowieua lucotricha (7.8%), Cylindruarpn sp. (0.9%), Fusarium avenacmm (0.9%), and Vdudla iliata (0.4%). Most of these fungi, including known and potential pathogens of ginseng (species of Alerraria, Cylindrocarpon, Fusarium, and Trichodirma), were associated with both healthy and diseased seed. Application of Benlate (benomyl), Thiram (thiram), or UBI-2584 (tebuconazole) to seed caused slight to pronounced reduction in emergence and did not significantly affect plant stand six weeks after seeding. The study demonstrated the high level of infection by fungi, including known and potential pathogens of the cry, in an arbitrary collection of ginseng seed from commercial sources, and the phytotoxicity of the fungicides tested when applied to moist stratified seed. The lack of efficacy of the fungicides precluded determination of the contribution of seedborne fungi to low vigour of the seed.

  • The study on the cultural characteristics of Bipolaris spicifera was conducted to provide with information for the identification, and inoculation studies, etc. B. spicifera grew well at $30{\sim}35^{\circ}C$ and wide range of pH $5.0{\sim}9.0$. However, the fungal growth was retarded at pH 4.0 and 10.0, respectively. Conidia were germinated with 70% at $30^{\circ}C$ but maintained 50% germination even at $40^{\circ}C$, indicating that this pathogen could infect plants at relatively high temperature. The pathogen could not produce conidia under 24 hr fluorescent light condition for 7 days. In contrast, it produced many more conidia at 24 hr dark condition.

  • 작물시험장, 충남농촌진흥원 및 일반농가에서 수집한 40개 참깨종자표본의 종자전염진균을 Blotter 법으로 조사하였던 바 Alternaria sesami, A. sesamicola, A. tenuis, A. longissima, Cercospora sesami, Cephalosporium sp., Corynespora cassiicola, Fusarium equiseti, F. moniliforme, F. oxysporum, F. semitectum, Macrophomina phoseolina 그리고 Myrothecium roridum이 검출되었다. 그 중 A. sesami, A. sesamicola, A. tenuis, C. cassiicola가 많은 비율로 검출되었다. A. sesami, A. sesamicola, A. longissima, C. sesami도 참깨 잎에 반점 또는 blight의 병징을 나타내었으나, A. tenuis은 병원성이 없었다. 토양접종실험의 결과, F. oxysporum과 M. phaseolina는 강한 병원성을 나타내어 심한 종자부패와 유묘고사를 초래하였다.
