  • An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of microbial phytase ($Natuphos^{(R)}$) supplementation in combination with carbohydrases (composed of enzymes targeted to soybean meal (SBM) dietary components such as $\alpha$-galactosides and galactomannans; $Endo-Power^{(R)}$) to corn-soybean meal based diet (CSD) and complex diet (CD) with a partial replacement of SBM with rape seed meal (RSM) and cotton seed meal (CSM) on growth performance and nutrient digestibility of growing pigs. A total of 168 growing pigs averaging $13.18{\pm}1.77kg$ of initial body weight was arranged as a $2{\times}2$ factorial design with main effects of diet types (corn-SBM based diet (CSD) and complex diets (CD; 5% of SBM was replaced with 2.5% of RSM and 2.5% of CSM in diet for phase I (0 to 3 weeks) and 6% of SBM was replaced with 3% of RSM and 3% of CSM in diet for phase II (4 to 7 weeks))) and enzyme supplementation (none and 0.1% of phytase (500 FTU/kg diet) and 0.1% of carbohydrases). The diet with enzyme application were formulated to have a 0.18% unit lower aP than diets without enzyme application. Each treatment had three replicates with 14 pigs per replicate. To determine supplementation effect of phytase and carbohydrases on ileal amino acid digestibility of SBM, RSM and CSM, a total of 18 T-cannulated pigs (initial body weight; $13.52{\pm}1.24kg$) were assigned to six dietary treatments in the present study. Dietary treatments in metabolic trial included 1) SBM diet, 2) SBM diet+with enzymes (phytase (500 FTU/kg) and carbohydrases at 0.1%, respectively), 3) CSM diet, 4) CSM diet+enzymes, 5) RSM diet and 6) RSM diet+enzymes. During whole experimental period (0 to 7 wks), there was no difference in growth performance between diets (CSD and CD). However, dietary phytase and carbohydrases supplementation significantly improved gain/feed ratio (G:F) of growing pigs. During the phase II (4-7 weeks), dietary phytase and carbohydrases supplementation significantly improved all fecal nutrient digestibilities (Dry matter (DM), gross energy (GE), crude protein (CP), crude fat (CF), calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P)). Dietary phytase and carbohydrases supplementation improved significantly overall ileal amino acid digestibilities of SBM, RSM and CSM based diets (p<0.05). The simultaneous inclusion of phytase and carbohydrases in both of CSD and CD reduced feed cost per kg body weight gain (FCG). Also, results suggest that 2.5 to 3% of RSM and CSM, respectively, might be used as a protein source in growing pig diets without having an adverse effect on the growth performance and nutrient digestibility and simultaneous phytase and carbohydrases addition improves nutritional value of SBM, RSM and CSM by improving ileal amino acid digestibilities.

  • This study was conducted to obtain the .basic informations for developing soybean varieties and mechanizing cultivation at the Crop Experiment Station, Rural Development Administration, Suwon, Korea in 1990. Two determinate soybean varieties, Hwangkeurnkong and Jangyeobkong, and two indeterminate soybean varieties, Clark and Williams were planted at three planting densities (33,22,16 plants / $m^2$). Number of branches and number of nodes on branches per unit area ($m^2$) were greater in determinate varieties than in indeterminate ones, and number of nodes on mainstem were greater in indeterminate varieties than in determinate ones. The higher planting density increased those characters. Seed weight per unit area ($m^2$) was higher in determinate varieties than in indeterminate ones, and it was great at the higher planting density. Indeterminate varieties showed greater mainstem dependence rate for yield components than determinate ones did. Harvest index was higher in indeterminate varieties than in determinate ones. The lower planting density increased harvest index. Stem dry weight per unit area($m^2$) was greater in determinate varieties than in indeterminate ones, and it was greater at the higher planting density. Variations among plants were great in the order of branch-related yield characters > total plant-re-lated yield characters > mainstem-related yield characters > morphological characters of mainstem and 100 seed weight. Difference between determinate and indeterminate varieties was significant in branch-related characters. Indeterminate varieties showed greater variations than determinate ones did in branch-related yield characters at different planting densities.

  • Mao seed is a by-product of the wine and juice industry, which could be used in animal nutrition. The current study was designed to determine the effect of supplementation of mao (Antidesma thwaitesianum Muell. Arg.) seed meal (MOSM) containing condensed tannins (CT) on rumen fermentation, nitrogen (N) utilization and microbial protein synthesis in goats. Four crossbred (Thai Native${\times}$Anglo Nubian) goats with initial body weight (BW) $20{\pm}2kg$ were randomly assigned to a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design. The four dietary treatments were MOSM supplementation at 0%, 0.8%, 1.6%, and 2.4% of total dry matter (DM) intake, respectively. During the experimental periods, all goats were fed a diet containing roughage to concentrate ratio of 60:40 at 3.0% BW/d and pangola grass hay was used as a roughage source. Results showed that supplementation with MOSM did not affect feed intake, nutrient intakes and apparent nutrient digestibility (p>0.05). In addition, ruminal pH and ammonia nitrogen ($NH_3$-N) were not influenced by MOSM supplementation, whilst blood urea nitrogen was decreased quadraticly (p<0.05) in goats supplemented with MOSM at 2.4% of total DM intake. Propionate was increased linearly with MOSM supplementation, whereas acetate and butyrate were remained the same. Moreover, estimated ruminal methane ($CH_4$) was decreased linearly (p<0.05) when goats were fed with MOSM at 1.6% and 2.4% of total DM intake. Numbers of bacteria and protozoa were similar among treatments (p>0.05). There were linear decreases in urinary N (p<0.01) and total N excretion (p<0.01) by MOSM supplementation. Furthermore, N retention was increased linearly (p<0.05) when goats were fed with MOSM supplementation at 1.6% and 2.4% of total DM intake. Microbial protein synthesis were not significantly different among treatments (p>0.05). From the current study, it can be concluded that supplementation of MOSM at 1.6% to 2.4% of total DM intake can be used to modify ruminal fermentation, especially propionate and N utilization in goats, without affecting the nutrient digestibility, microbial populations and microbial protein synthesis.

  • The aims of the work were to examme the variability induced by EMS (ethyl methanesulfonate) mutagenesis of soybean plants, and to isolate mutants altered in nodulation and other growth characters. Seeds of two soybean cultivars, ‘Hwanggeumkong’ and ‘Baegunkong’ were treated with 30 and 50mM EMS(pH 7.0) for 6 hours and were planted directly in the field. Field emergency of$M_1 seed was averaged to be 61.0%, and frequency of plants with chlorophyll-deficient sectors of the first trifoliolate is about 0.7%. Regardless of varieties and does of EMS, $M_1 plant injury at harvest was present in plant height, pod and seed number per plant when compared to those of original-type soybean plants. The $M_2 variability of nodulation process induced by EMS treatment was found to be narrower than that of shoot dry weight. On the basis of the occurrence of chlorophyll-deficient plants, mutated cell frequency within $M_1 seed ranged from 5.3% to 84.2%, suggesting that mutation frequency on the $M_1 seed induced by EMS occurred partly and randomly regardless of varieties and doses of EMS. The putative mutant, which had more nodulation than original-type plant, was short in plant height. Sparse-nodulating soybean mutant was lower in leaf chlorophyll content and showed reduced growth.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of foliar application of Chitosan and seedling types on increasing the production of fall-growing potatoes(Solanum tuberosum) at the height of 250m from the sea in Jeju Island. The experiment main-plots consisted of four Chitosan applications, and subplots had three seedling types as cutting plug seedlings, mine-tuber plug seedling planting plot and seed potatoes planting plot. The foliar application of Chitosan of 2000ppm was carried out 0, 1, 3, 5 times at intervals of ten days after ten days of transplanting. Plant height and top dry weight were significantly more vigorous as three to five application of Chitosan. In the small tubers(under 80g), the number of tubers and tuber yield were relatively increased in the seed potatoes planting plot and mine-tuber plug seedling plot, but the large tubers(over 80g) was higher in the cutting plug seedling planting plot. T-N content in leaves was increased as the number of application of Chitosan was increased. A similar tendency was shown in K, P Ca, Mg and Na. The growth and tuber yield in cutting plug seedlings, mine-tuber plug seedling planting plot and seed potatoes planting plot were effectively increased as three to five foliar applications of Chitosan was increased.

  • The effect of defatted and dehydrated beef muscle on the physical properties of thermoplastically extruded defatted soybean, cottonseed, peanut and sunflower seed flours were investigated. To minimize the adverse effect of meat fat and to increase the mixing efficiency of the meat with defatted oilseed flours at a given moisture level, beef muscle was extracted with chloroform-ethanol(2 : 1) at 2$0^{\circ}C$ and air dried. The variety of oilseed flours used had greater effects on color, expansion, bulk density, water absorption rate and textural strength of the extrudate than did the added level of defatted, dehydrated beef muscle (0 to 20% on a dry weight basis).

  • Serpentine soils are distributed in a small area in Korea, and generally exhibit high contents of Ni, Cr, Fe, Mn, Co and Mg. We investigated the growth of woody plants and herbs in the Andong serpentine area, Korea. Pinus densiflora and P. rigida growing on serpentine soils have high contents of Fe, Mg, Ni and Co, with contents approximately twice as high as those of non-serpentine plants. Tree species on serpentine soil also had lower ratios of tree height/DBH than trees in a control area. In greenhouse culture experiments on two bodenvag herb species, Setaria viridis and Cymbopogon tortilis, the biomass of the plants was significantly affected by soil type but not by seed origins. After 66 days, the growth of S. viridis and C. tortilis seedlings was significantly inhibited in serpentine soil, and the dry weight of each species showed significant negative correlations with soil heavy metal contents (Ni, Co and Cr). These results suggest that the growth of plants was inhibited by properties of the serpentine soil, and in particular, their high heavy metal concentration, which induced dwarfing in woody plants and reduction of total plant biomass in herbs.

  • The content and composition of tocopherol were analyzed in peanuts produced in Korea. The tocopherol assay was consisted of an extraction with n-hex-ane:isopropanol mixture followed by high pressure liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. Tocopherol content was higher in leaves and seeds but lower in seed coats and shells. $\alpha$-/${\gamma}$- Tocopherol ratio was as low as 0.53 in seeds and as high as 22.5 in shells. Tocopherol content in seeds of nine varieties ranged from 142 to 220 ng/mg dry weight, and the $\alpha$-/${\gamma}$-tocopherol ratio from 0.40 to 0.75. Tocopherol content decreased by 18% but $\alpha$-/${\gamma}$-tocopherol ratio increased by 44% in roasted seeds. The results indicate that the level of tocopherol in Korean peanut varieties is moderate and the ratio of $\alpha$- to ${\gamma}$-tocopherol is low.
