Feasibility of Powdered MSWI Ash Melted Slag as a Seed Crystal of crystallization reaction for the Removal of Phosphorus from Sewage (하수중 인제거를 위한 정석탈인반응의 정석재로서 소각분말 용융슬래그의 이용 가능성 평가)

  • This study is a fundamental research to test the applicability of powdered MSWI(Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator) ash melted slag as a seed Crystal for crystallization reaction. Powdered ash melted slag was melted at $1100^{\circ}C$ and ground to lesser than 0.35mm. According to the result of the tests, calcium, enough for crystallization reaction, was eluted from powdered ash melted slag. Moreover, sample(Phosphorus concentration is under 10 mg/L), more than 90% of Phosphorus can be removed. So we rectify the Phosphorus concentration to 100 mg/L. Alkalinity, being well known that it interferes crystallization reaction, effect was studied for synthetic solution(100 mg/L initial Phosphorus concentration, 50 mg/L calcium, pH 8, 1% powdered ash melted slag dosage). For this result, we know that Phosphorus removal is hindered by alkalinity. In addition, the effect of reaction temperature was performed at the same method. The reaction velocity was increased through raising the reaction temperature.

Culture Conditions of Aspergillus oryzae in Dried Food-Waste and the Effects of Feeding the AO Ferments on Nutrients Availability in Chickens (건조한 남은 음식물을 이용한 Aspergillus oryzae균주 배양조건과 그 배양물 급여가 닭의 영양소 이용률에 미치는 영향)

  • Two experiments were carried out to assess the appropriate incubation conditions namely; duration, moisture content and the ideal microbial inoculant for fermented dried food waste(EW) offered to broilers. The nutrient utilization of birds fed the FW diets at varying dietary inclusion rates was also compared with a control diet. In Experiment 1, different moisture contents(MC) of 30, 40, 50 and $60\%$ respectively were predetermined to establish the ideal duration of incubation and the microbial inoculant. A 1mL Aspergillus oryzae(AO) $(1.33\times10^5\;CFU/mL)$ was used as the seed inoculant in FW. This results indicated that the ideal MC for incubation was $40\~50\%$ while the normal incubation time was > 72 hours. Consequently, AO seeds at 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00mL were inoculated in FW to determine its effect on AO count. The comparative AO count of FW incubated for 12 and 96 hours, respectively showed no significant differences among varying inoculant dosage rates. The FW inoculated with lower AO seeds at 0.10, 0.05 and 0.01mL were likewise incubated for 72 and 96 hours, respectively and no changes in AO count was detected(p<0.05). The above findings indicated that the incubation requirements for FW should be $%40\~50\%$ for 72 hours with an AO seed incoulant dosage rate of 0.10mL. Consequently, in Experiment II, after determining the appropriate processing condition for the FW, 20 five-week old male Hubbard strain were used in a digestibility experiment. The birds were divided into 4 groups with 5 pens(1 bird per pen). The dietary treatments were; Treatment 1 : Control(Basal diet), Treatment 2 : $60\%$ Basal+4$40\%$ FW, Treatment 3 : $60\%$ $Basal+20\%\;FW+20\%$ AFW(Aspergillus oryzae inoculate dried food-waste diet) and Treatment 4: $60\%$ Basal+$40\%$ Am. Digestibility of treatment 2 was lowed on common nutrients and amino acids compared with control(p<0.05) and on crude fat and phosphorus compared with AFW treatments(T3, T4)(plt;0.05). Digestibility of treatment 3 and 4 increased on crude fiber and crude ash compared treatment 2 (p<0.05). Digestibility of control was high on agrinine, leucine, and phenylalnine of essential amino acids compared with treatment 3 and 4(p<0.05), and diestibility of treatment 3 and 4 was improved on arginine, lysine, and threonine of essential amino acids. Finally, despite comparable nutrient utilization among treatments, birds fed the dietary treatment containing AO tended to superior nutrient digestion to those fed the $60\%$ Basa1+$40\%$ FW.

Effect on the Germination Growth and Variation Induction in Gamma Rays Irradiated seeds of Lilac Pink and Nursery Spiraea (술패랭이꽃과 층꽃나무 종자에 대한 감마선 조사가 발아, 생육 및 변이유발에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to clarify effects on the germination, survival rate of seedlings, growth and variation induction of variants in gamma rays irradiated seed of lilac pink (Dianthus superbus var. longicalycinus) and nursery spiraea (Caryopteris incana). Seed germination and its germination rate were delayed over 90 Gy for lilac pink and 80 Gy for nursery psiraea. Fifty percent lethal time (LT50) level for lilac pink and nursery psiraea were 150 Gy and 100 Gy, respectively. Lilac pink and nursery psiraea were grown dwarf over 120 Gy treatment. We have produced 17 variants of lilac pink in $M_1$ generation, and selected the promising 4 variants in $M_2$ generation. We have also made 7 variants of nursery psiraea in $M_1$ generation, and selected the favorable 8 variants in $M_2$ generation.

Optimum Condition for Fluoride Removal Prior to the Application of Struvite Crystallization in Treating Semiconductor Wastewater (Struvite 결정화를 이용한 반도체 폐수처리 시 불소제거를 위한 최적 조건)

  • This study was aimed to both enhance the fluoride removal and to reduce the phosphorus removal in treating semiconductor wastewater using $Ca(OH)_2$ at low pH so as to facilitate struvite crystallization reaction. The struvite crystallization could be introduced after fluoride removal by retaining the phosphorus source. As the results, the method applied in this study achieved high fluoride removal efficiency (about 91%) with retardation of phosphorus removal at pH 4, compared to conventional methods where the removal of fluoride and phosphorus were done at pH 11. Therefore, the fluoride removal at low pH would contribute to the enhancement of nitrogen and phosphorus removals in a consecutive struvite crystallization reactor. Treatment of semiconductor wastewater at low pH using $Ca(OH)_2$ also had lower (about 20%) water content of precipitated sludge compared to conventional method. As the molar ratio of Ca to F increased the removal efficiencies of fluoride and phosphorus increased. Although the amount of seed dosage didn't affect the removal of fluoride and phosphorus, its increase reduced the water content of precipitated matter. Finally, considering consecutive struvite reaction, the optimum condition for the removal of fluoride and phosphorus was as follow: pH: 4, the molar ratio of Ca:F: 1:1.

Treatment of N, P of Auto-Thermal Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion Filtrate with Struvite Crystallization (Struvite 결정화 반응을 이용한 고온 소화 여과액의 N, P 처리 특성)

  • Recently, auto-thermal thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD) has a great attention for destruction of wasted sludge biomass in wastewater treatment plant. Reduction of sludge concentration has been successfully achieved with pilot scale ATAD and ceramic filtration process in field condition. However, high concentration of COD, total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) was observed in filtrate, which should be treated before recirculation of filtrate to biological wastewater treatment plant. This study was focused on removal of nitrogen and phosphorus contained in the filtrate of ATAD, using struvite crystallization method. The effect of operational and environmental parameters (such as, N, P and Mg ion concentration and molar ratio, pH, reaction time, agitation strength, seed dosage, and reaction temperature) on the treatment of TN and TP with struvite crystallization were evaluated. Magnesium (as $MgCl_26H_2O$) and phosphorus (as $K_2HPO_4$) ions were, if necessary, added to increase nitrogen removal efficiency by the crystal formation. Average concentration of $NH_4^+-N$ and $PO_4^{3-}-P$ of the filtrate were 1716.5 mg/L and 325.5 mg/L, respectively. Relationship between removal efficiencies of nitrogen and phosphorus and molar ratios of $Mg^{2+}$ and $PO_4^{3-}-P$ to $NH_4^+-N$ was examined. Crystal formation and nitrogen removal efficiencies were significantly increased as increasing molar ratios of magnesium and phosphorus to nitrogen. As molar ratio of $Mg^{2+}:PO_4^{3-}-P:NH_4^+-N$ were maintained to 2 : 1 : 1 and 2 : 2 : 1, removal efficiencies of nitrogen and phosphorus were 71.6% and 99.9%, and 93.8% and 98.6%, respectively. However, the effect of reaction time, mixing intensity, seed dose and temperature on the struvite crystallization reaction was not significant, comparing to those of molar ratios. Settled sludge volume after struvite crystallization was observed to be reduced with increase of seed dose and to be increased at high temperature.

  • The most remarkable aspect in the hormesis law is that dose of harmful agents can produce effect that are diametrically opposite to the effect found with high doses of the same agent. Minute quantities of a harmful agent bring about very small change in the organism and control mechanisms appear to subjugate normal processes to place the organism in a state of albert and repair. The stimulated organism in more responsive to changes in environmental factors than it did before being alerted. Routine functions, including repair and defense, have priority for available energy and matetial. The alerted organism utilizes nutrients more efficiently, grows faster, shows improved defense, and lives longer. Accelerated germination, sprouting, growth, development, blooming and ripening, and increased crop yield and resistance to disease are found in plants. Another concept supported by the data in that low doses of ionizing radiation provide increased resistance to subsequent high doses of radiation. The hormesis varies with subject plant, variety, state of seed, environmental and cultural conditions, physiologic function measured, dose rate and total exposure. The results of hormesis are less consistently found, probably due to the great number of uncontrolled variables in the experiments. The general dosage for radiation homlesis in about 100 (10 to 1,000) times ambient or 100 (10 to 1,000) times less than a definitely harmful dose, but these must be modified to the occasion. Although little is known about most mechanisms of homzesis reaction, overcompensation of repair mechanism is offered as one mechanism.

Reproductive Bioligy of the Sevenband Grouper, Epinephelus septemfasciatus I. The Effect of HCG on Ovulation Induction (능성어, Epinephelus septemfasciatus의 번식생물학적 연구 I. HCG 처리에 의한 배란유도)

  • The experiment was conducted to understand the effect of HCG upon ovulation induction and egg maturation in the sevenband grouper, Epinephelus septemfasciatus, as a part of the research for its resources management and seed production. Three different size groups of sevenband groupers showing 300~400g, 1,500~2,000g and 2,500~4,000g, were collected from June to August, 1996. They were treated two or three times with HCG (500~1,000 IU/kg). Gonadal development of the sevenband groupers were examined using the paraffin section method and then stained with haematoxylin and eosin. When smaller groups of sevenband grouper having 300~400g, 1,500~2,00g and 2,500~3,200g in weight were treated two or three time with HCG 9500~1,000 IU/g), their gonads contained oogonia, oocytes with the size of 20~30${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and stroma tissues. However, in case of two HCG treatments with a dosage of 1,000 IU/kg on sevenband groupers of 3,400~4,000g, both healthy eggs of $800\mu$m in diameter and regressing eggs were ovulated. A sevenband grouper of 4,000g obvulated 4,252 eggs in total. Of these, healthy and regressing eggs turned out to be 20.8% and 79.2%, respectively. In addition, previtellogenic oocytes of around $50\mu$m, oocytes of 20~$30\mu$m, and ovulation trace were also observed in the gonad.
