In order to maintain constant residual chlorine in sedimentation basin, It is necessary to develop real time prediction model of residual chlorine considering water treatment plant data such as water qualities, weather, and plant operation conditions. Based on the operation data acquired from K water treatment plant, prediction models of residual chlorine in sediment basin were accomplished. The input parameters applied in the models were water temperature, turbidity, pH, conductivity, flow rate, alkalinity and pre-chlorination dosage. The multiple regression models were established with linear and non-linear model with 5,448 data set. The corelation coefficient (R) for the linear and non-linear model were 0.39 and 0.374, respectively. It shows low correlation coefficient, that is, these multiple regression models can not represent the residual chlorine with the input parameters which varies independently with time changes related to weather condition. Artificial neural network models are applied with three different conditions. Input parameters are consisted of water quality data observed in water treatment process based on the structure of auto-regressive model type, considering a time lag. The artificial neural network models have better ability to predict residual chlorine at sediment basin than conventional linear and nonlinear multi-regression models. The determination coefficients of each model in verification process were shown as 0.742, 0.754, and 0.869, respectively. Consequently, comparing the results of each model, neural network can simulate the residual chlorine in sedimentation basin better than mathematical regression models in terms of prediction performance. This results are expected to contribute into automation control of water treatment processes.
The coarse deposit with a lower mud content adjacent to the shelf of the southern East Sea is probably a "relict" sediment deposited in response to a lower stand of sea level during the Pleistocene. The sediment that developed on the slope and in the deep sea was river-borne primarily and was secondarily reworked or redistributed by the Tsushima Warm Current from the East China Sea. The clay mineralogy of the area suggests various sources of fine-grained sediment from adjacent rivers, the Korea Strait, volcanic material from Ulleung Island, and the Japan coast. Massive sand, bioturbated mud, homogeneous mud, and laminated mud were the dominant facies found in the core sediments from the study area. The massive sand was mainly volcanic ash from an eruption on Ulleung Island (9300 yr BP) and consisted of colorless pumiceous glass and a black scoriaceous type. The sedimentation rates on the slope, based on the Ulleung-Oki ash layer, were about 10cm/ky higher than in the basin. Other than the coarse-grain sediment, the mean size of the fine sediment dominating the bioturbated and homogeneous muds in the basin and the laminated mud on the slope was 6-10 phi. This indicates a difference in the major sedimentary process: hemipelagic sedimentation in the Ulleung Basin and mass flow deposition, such as turbidite, on the slope of the southern East Sea.
This paper aims to reuse sewage by a forward osmosis using a blended fertilizer as a draw solution. This work deals with the primary sedimentation basin influent, effluent, and secondary sedimentation basin effluent from J sewage treatment plant. The average permeate water flux was higher in the order of the blend of KCl and NH4Cl > KCl and NH4H2PO4 > KCl and (NH4)2HPO4, and the reverse solute flux was lower in the order of the blend of KCl and NH4H2PO4 < KCl and NH4Cl < KCl and (NH4)2HPO4. Regardless of the blended fertilizer, the permeate water flux of the effluent from the secondary sedimentation basin was the highest. The blended fertilizer of KCl and NH4H2PO4 was found to be most useful for the reuse of sewage because it contains nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, which are the major components of a fertilizer, and has a low reverse solute flux. When the blend of KCl and NH4H2PO4 was used as a draw solution, the average permeate water and reverse solute flux for the secondary sedimentation basin effluent were 12.14 L/㎡hr and 0.012 mol/㎡s, respectively.

A contact oxidation canal system with sedimentation basin was installed to study the efficiency of water quality purification. The primary sedimentation basin with 60 min of HRT (Hydraulic Retention Time) included in the system was aimed to sediment pollutants in the water and the deposit being released by the drainage culvert located at the bottom of the system. The oxidation canal aerated by nozzle was to contact the pollutants and oxygen in the surface of plastic filter to purify the water. Discharge, HRT, length of the oxidation canal were $200\;m^3/day$, 90 min, 20 m, respectively. The treatment efficiency of total nitrogen was lower compared with other water quality items such as SS, BOD, TP because the anoxic condition for denitrification was not ensured after the oxidation canal. However, $25%{\sim}89.6%$ of SS, $75.0%{\sim}91.5%$ of BOD, $44.3%{\sim}95.3%$ of TP were removed in this system. Overall, the results indicates that this system appears to have a potential capability for water quality improvement of the reservoirs or the canals in the agricultural watershed.
The Kyongsang Basin is the most representative Cretaceous basin in the Korean Peninsula where extensive crustal deformation and non-marine sedimentation took place in the early Cretaceous period. The lithology of the basement of the basin and adjacent areas is comprised of mainly Precambrian gneiss complex and Mesozoic granite intrusions. We have carried out magnetotelluric (MT) surveys to investigate the deep geoelectric structure around the Kyongsang Basin. The MT data were collected in the frequency range from 0.00042 to 320 Hz at 24 sites along a profile across the northern part of Kyongsang Basin. The results of MT inversion show that the thickness of sediments is estimated about 3 km to 9 km and the depth to base of granite intrusion is about 20 km. A remarkable discovery in this study is the highly conductive layer beneath the basin, having the resistivity of 1 ohm-m to 30 ohm-m and the thickness of about 3 km to 4 km or more. Although we are not able to reveal the nature of this layer, the result of this study could provide some basic information with respect to the formation process and deposit environment of the proto-Kyongsang Basin.
The Mekong River plays an extremely important role in Southeast Asia. Flowing through six countries, including China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos PDR, Cambodia, and Vietnam, it is a site of great biological and ecological diversity and the habitat of numerous species of fish. It also supports a very large population that lives along the river basin. Therefore, much attention has been focused on the giant Mekong River Basin, particularly, its soil erosion and sedimentation problems. In fact, many methods have been used to calculate and simulate these problems. However, in the case of the Mekong River Basin, the available data is limited because of the extreme size of the area (about $795,000km^2$) and lack of equipment systems in the countries through which the Mekong River flows. In this study, we applied the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) model in a GIS (Geographic Information System) framework to calculate the amount of soil erosion and sediment load during the selected period, from 1951 to 2007. The result points out dangerous areas, such as the Upper Mekong River Basin and 3S Basin (containing the Sekong, Sesan, and Srepok Rivers) that are suffering the serious consequences of soil erosion problems. Moreover, the present model is also useful for supporting river basin management in the implementation of sustainable management practices in the Mekong River Basin and other basins.
Constructed wetlands are widely applied in urban and rural areas for various purposes such as pollutants reduction, acquisition of eco-spaces and habitats, flooding reduction, acquisition of water resources and environmental education. Since the design of constructed wetlands utilizes ecosystems, special consideration must be given to ecological mechanisms, environmental mechanisms and hydrological mechanisms. To ensure the sustainable functionality of constructed wetlands, it is necessary to achieve stable flow rate and velocity, and remove sediments to ensure sufficient space for detention. To enhance the efficiency of constructed wetland sedimentation basins, this study determined the optimal position for baffle installation, and applied Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to the cross-sectional design of wetlands. CFD analysis revealed that the decrease in flow velocity with baffle installation enhanced the efficiency of sedimentation of particulate matters. Vertical baffles had higher sedimentation efficiency than those with an inclined angle. When vertical baffles were installed in the sedimentation basin of a hybrid constructed wetland to reduce non-point source pollutants in urban areas, the average flow velocity within the basin decreased by 10~30%, while the sedimentation efficiency improved by 1.3~1.5 times. The application of CFD to constructed wetlands is expected to improve the cost efficiency of designing hybrid constructed wetlands with high removal efficiency.

The paper mill wastewater actually generating bulking was used to apply to the spot. Batch and continuous type pilots were used in this study. Optimal time after propagating generation of activated sludge in aeration basin by adding Hoc forming microorganism was 24 and 36hours while optimal time of activated sludge in original aeration basin was 60hours. Showing the difference of sedimentation velocity at 7th day after operating a pilot continuously, SV30 was decreased to 50% at 13th day. COD value in aeration basin with floe forming microorganism was 35mg/L while COD value in original aeration basin was 52mg/L. It was indicated that application of Hoc forming microorganism can control the bulking of paper mill wastewater by shortening of recovery time and improving of pollution removal efficiency.
The basement rock of upper stream of Keum River Valley consists of Precambrian gneiss which is resistant to weathering. That of mid and lower stream valley, however, is mainly composed of Mesozoic granites which are vulnerable to weathering. The upstream part of Geum River Basin is typified by the deeply-incised and steep meandering streams, whereas mid and lower part is characterized by wide floodplain and gently dipping river bottom toward the Yellow Sea. In particular flooding deposits, in which are imprinted a number of repetitions of erosion and sedimentation during the Holocene, are widely distributed in the lower stream of Geum River Basin. For understanding of erosions in the mid and lower stream of Geum River Basin, the rate of erosion of each small basins were estimated by using the data of field survey, erosional experiments and GIS ananlysis. It was revealed that erosion rate appeared highest in granite areas, and overall areas, in this field survey were represented by relatively high erosion rates. By implemeatation of remote sensing and imagery data, the temporal changes of river bed sediments for about last 11 years were successfully monitored. Observed as an important phenomenon is that the river bed has been risen since 1994 when an embankment (Dyke) was constructed in the estuarine river mouth. From the results derived from the detailed river bed topographical map made in this investigation, the sedimentation of the lower river basin is considered to be deposited with about 5 cm/year for the last 11 years. Based on this river bed profile analysis by HEC-6 module, it is predicted that Geum River bed of Ganggyeong area is continuously rising up in general until 2004. Although extraction of a large amount of aggregates from Gongju to Ganggyung areas, the Ganggyung lower stream shows the distinct sedimentation. Therefore, it is interpreted that the active erosions of tributary basins Geum drainage basins can affect general river bed rising changes of Geum River.
Distribution basins are used widely in the water treatment process. Uniform distribution at the distribution basin is an important because it affect precipitation efficiency of sedimentation basin. Generally distribution basin has a free surface water and is consisted of a weir. Study result, when inflow of distribution basin is less, amount of overflow is much at the nearest weir from the inlet. But when inflow is much, amount of overflow is much at the far weir from the inlet. The difference of distribution amount at the pipe is affected by the curvature and length of the pipe. The magnitude of the effect is determined by the relative energy loss and the flow state of the distribution basin. Optimization of the response surface method for minimizing an amount of deviation of the distribution is a very useful technique to determine the optimal ratio of the valve opening.
