This study presents the estimation of the entrainment velocity of sediment particles from the scour hole. Sediment particles are entrained from the scour hole downstream of hydraulic structures by the turbulent vortices. Mathematical form of the entrainment velocity of sediment particles from the scour hole was obtained using the impulse-momentum equation with given value of the vertical component of turbulent velocity of the line vortex. Also, its probability density distribution was obtained with the results that the probability density distribution of the vertical turbulent velocity followed the normal distribution. Experimental results of the entrainment velocity of sediment particles showed relatively good agreements with theoretical ones.

Nakdong river estuary is located at south-eastern coast if the Korea. Especially, Complicating topography change is generated by interaction of much sediment, wave and tide. This study is investigated into observation data of grading size distribution in the post and surface sediment characteristics is investigated into grading size analysis using sieve analysis in Nakong river estuary. As a result, mean diameter of surface sediment is distributed to front of shoal as a size with 0.1~0.2 mm and mean diameter of the last generated shoal is about 0.2~0.3 mm.

This paper reports the sediment geochemistry and its relation to the grain size distribution in Kyeonggi Bay, Korea. Sediment samples were collected from 90 stations during the cruise crossing the bay in December 1995. Variables investigated were the sediment grain size, organic carbon content, and concentrations of AI, Fe, Mn, V, Co, Ni, Cr, Zn and Cu in the sediment. We followed the change in these variables by comparing the data obtained from this region in 1981. Distribution pattern of sediment grain size was modified from that in 1981 in some places. Near the Shihwa Dike which was completed in 1994, sediment had got finer grained. Sediment facies changed from fine to mixed facies near Youngjong Island where the tidal flat has been reclaimed for airport construction. Contents of organic matter and metals in the sediment were mostly dependent upon the sediment grain size, but an exception was found in the harbor area. The sediment in the Incheon North Harbor showed higher accumulation of organic matter and metals such as Ni, Cr, Zn and Cu.
Catchments soil erosion, one of the most serious problems in the mountainous environment of the world, consists of a complex phenomenon involving the detachment of individual soil particles from the soil mass and their transport, storage and overland flow of rainfall, and infiltration. Sediment size distribution during erosion processes appear to depend on many factors such as rainfall characteristics, vegetation cover, hydraulic flow, soil properties and slope. This study involved laboratory flume experiments carried out under simulated rainfall in a 3.0 m long ${\times}$ 0.8 m wide ${\times}$ 0.7 m deep flume, set at $17^{\circ}$ slope. Five experimental cases, consisting of twelve experiments using three different sediments with two different rainfall conditions, are reported. The experiments consisted of detailed observations of particle size distribution of the out-flow sediment. Sediment water mixture out-flow hydrograph and sediment mass out-flow rate over time, moisture profiles at different points within the soil domain, and seepage outflow were also reported. Moisture profiles, seepage outflow, and movement of overland flow were clearly found to be controlled by water retention function and hydraulic function of the soil. The difference of grain size distribution of original soil bed and the out-flow sediment was found to be insignificant in the cases of uniform sediment used experiments. However, in the cases of non-uniform sediment used experiments the outflow sediment was found to be coarser than the original soil domain. The results indicated that the sediment transport mechanism is the combination of particle segregation, suspension/saltation and rolling along the travel distance.

Turbidity meter calibrations were conducted using bottom sediment and suspended material collected with a vertical array of sediment traps at the coastal water off Gaduk Island. Compared to the bottom sediment comprising sand fraction of approximately 6%, trapped suspended material was composed entirely of silt and clay fractions and showed a tendency to get finer as elevation from the sea-bed increases. Slope parameter of linear regression due to bottom sediment was of minimum value and values of those due to suspended material increased gradually as the height of sediment trap increases (i.e., sediment size decreases). This result shows that turbidity meter calibration using bottom sediment can cause an overestimation error in the calculation of suspended sediment concentration and that the error can reach up to 25% in case of this study. Therefore, it is suggested that the use of a corrected calibration curve based on grain size distribution of suspended material instead of bottom sediment may reduce the measurement error of suspended sediment concentration.
Annually, about 48-60% of sediment discharge of the Mekong River is delivered near the mouths of the Mekong River branches which is mostly coinciding with the southwest (SW) monsoon. This sediment budget in turn will be southwestwardly transported along the coast of the Mekong Delta (MD) during the northeast (NE) monsoon. Analysis of monsoonal changes in grain-size distribution (GSD) of surface sediment contributes to a better understanding of erosion and deposition processes along the MD. This study aims to figure out changes in GSD and sediment textures along the MD between SW and NE monsoons based on 183 surficial sediment samples collected along the MD during two field surveys carried-out in October 2016 and February-March 2017. Compared to the GSD during the SW and NE monsoon, the GSD along the MD changed significantly, especially in the estuary areas and along the coast of Bac Lieu and Ganh Hao. Whereas, in the west coast of the MD, GSD seem no changes between the two seasons. These changes in seabed sediment suggest that sediment with grain-sizes ranging from silt to fine sand can be transported during only a NE season.

Characteristics of suspended sediment concentration of equilibrium and non-equilibrium state caused by waves and currents are investigated by conducting a movable bed experiments in wave tanks. In the region where a downward flux of suspended sediment is larger than a upward flux, time-averaged vertical distribution of suspended sediment does not indicate logarithmic distribution. A new numerical procedure for predicting time-averaged suspended sediment concentration is also proposed based on two-dimensional advective diffusion equation by applying a split-operator approach. It is found that the unposed procedure can predict measured distribution of suspended sediment satisfactorily.
The distribution of the taxonomical composition and the density of meiobenthos depending on the sediment type has been studied in bottom sediments of Nha Trang Bay. The maximal population density and the taxonomical diversity were observed in the silted coarse and heterogeneous sand ($1031.4{\pm}419.7\;ind.\;10\;cm^{-2}$), whereas the minimal level of density and diversity ($588.1{\pm}152.5\;ind.\;10cm^{-2}$) was in the coarse and heterogeneous sand with shell debris and corals. The correlation between the median diameter of sediment particles and population density of meiobenthos has been revealed (r=0.82, p<0.05). In bottom sediments of Nha Trang Bay, twenty six taxonomic groups of meiobenthos were observed. Nematodes dominated in all sediment types. Representatives of four orders, twenty eight families and ninety seven genera of marine nematodes were identified. The vertical distribution of meiobenthos in different sediment types was considered. A sediment column (10 cm height) was sectioned by five 2 cm portions. In the last layer (8-10 cm) the most number of meiobenthic groups was found in sandy sediments. In the lower layers of silt sediments, only nematodes were found.
The bed change model of HEC-RAS was used to predict the formation of a delta upon an influx of high-density sediment while taking the particle-size distributions of the suspended sediment and bed materials into account. The model was able to reasonably predict both the spatial-temporal distribution of the delta and the amount of deposited sediment according to the grain size. In addition, it was able to estimate the main type of grains that sediment at particular locations at particular times moderately well. It is expected that the simulation and the analysis considering these particle-size distributions of sediment will provide important information on planning and maintenance of the water resource related facilities.
