  • This study analyzed the characteristics of sediment produce by landslide triggered by rainfall. One-dimensional unsaturated groundwater model and infinite slope stability analysis were used to estimate the behavior of soil moisture and slope stability according to rainfall, respectively. Slope stability analysis was performed considering on soil depth and characteristics of trees. The results of the analysis on characteristics of sediment produce according to rainfall events showed that the sediment produce by landslide was mainly contributed to rainfall intensity and its temporal clustering. The results of the analysis on characteristics of sediment produce by extreme events showed that remaining rainfall amount of typhoon 'Rusa' was much more than that of the other extreme events, and thus this remaining rainfall was to contribute to sediment transportation. Additionally, only a small number of extreme events were found to cause most amount of sediment produce in a basin.

  • Sediment discharge by rainfall runoff affects water quality in rivers such as turbid water, eutrophication. In order to solve various problems caused by soil loss, it is important to establish a sediment management plan for watersheds and rivers in advance. However, there is a lack of sediment data available for estimating sediment discharge in ungauged basins.. Thus, reasonable research is very important to evaluate and predict the sediment discharge quantitatively. In this study, cluster analysis was conducted to classify gauged watersheds into hydrologically homogeneous groups based on the watershed characteristics. Also, this study suggests a method to efficiently predict the sediment discharge for ungauged basins by developing and evaluating the SDR equations based on the PA-SDR module. As the result, the SDR equations for the classified watersheds were derived to predict the most reasonable sediment discharge of ungauged basins with 0.24 % ~ 10.89 % errors. It was found that the optimal parameters for the gauged basins reflect well characteristic of sediment movement. SDR equations proposed in this study will be available for estimating sediment discharge on ungauged basins. Also it is possible to utilize establishing the appropriate sediment management plan for integrated management of watershed and river in Korea.

  • This study was carried out to estimate effects of sediment reduction with net type sediment settling pond at highland agricultural areas. Flow and sediment monitoring system with rainfall gauge were installed at the study area for real-time monitoring and analysis. It was found that amount and intensity of rainfall events strongly affect sediment yield from the study area. With net type sediment settling pond, it was expected that approximately 61% of sediment could be removed. The correlation between heavy metals and SS were analyzed in this study. $R^2$ values were 0.644, 0.876, 0.945, and 0.928 for Fe, Mn, Al, and Si, respectively. This results indicate that heavy metals also could be removed with net type sediment settling pond. As shown in this study, the sediment settling pond will be an efficient sediment reduction facility at highland agricultural areas. For maximum reduction efficiencies of sediment and other pollutants at agricultural fields, simplified sediment settling pond should be designed and implemented.

  • In this study, the following conclusions were obtained from an investigation of the effect of the simulation time step on the simulation results of the two-dimensional, vertically averaged sediment transport model SED2D and an analysis of the deposited sediment distribution in suspended sediments of reservoirs according to grain size. The simulation time step has a significant effect on the deposited sediment distribution in a reservoir. In particular, if the simulation time step is set to be excessively large, physically invalid results are obtained. Additionally, in order to determine an appropriate simulation time step for SED2D, the selection of a simulation time step that will allow the analysis of the suspended sediment concentration profile at the main points of the simulation domain is necessary. The deposited sediment distribution in a reservoir according to grain size, including suspended sediments of clay, silt, and sand, was successfully simulated. Such information will prove valuable in application to the establishment of efficient management and reduction measures of reservoir sediment deposits.

  • Characteristics of benthic microalgae and sediment properties were investigated for the intertidal flats of Kwangyang Bay, Korea. Sampling stations were selected every 100 m in the intertidal flats from land-side to open ocean at two different sampling sites. Samples were collected in June 2004, July, September, November, February and May 2005. Sediments properties were measured including temperature, water contents, sediment bulk density, nutrient concentrations in porewater. Chlorophyll a concentrations in surface sediment (0.5 cm) were measured and relationships between the chlorophyll a and various sediment properties were analyzed to identify major mechanisms regulating biomass of benthic microalgae in the intertidal flats using simple linear regression analysis. Sediment chlorophyll a concentrations were maximum during winter and minimum during warm seasons ranging from 4.4 mg $m^{-2}\;to\;81.2\;mg\;m^{-2}$. No clear spatial variations were observed for the sediment chlorophyll a in the study sites. Results from regression analysis suggested that benthic microalgae biomass was affected by sediment temperature and nutrients especially ammonium and silicate. Grazing effect was estimated using chlorophyll: pheopigments ratio, indirect indicator of grazing activity, and the positive correlation of the ratio and chlorophyll a implied that microalgae biomass is affected by grazing of zoobenthos although direct measurement of grazing activity is required to determine the importance of top-down controls in the benthic microalgae dynamics.

  • Annually, about 48-60% of sediment discharge of the Mekong River is delivered near the mouths of the Mekong River branches which is mostly coinciding with the southwest (SW) monsoon. This sediment budget in turn will be southwestwardly transported along the coast of the Mekong Delta (MD) during the northeast (NE) monsoon. Analysis of monsoonal changes in grain-size distribution (GSD) of surface sediment contributes to a better understanding of erosion and deposition processes along the MD. This study aims to figure out changes in GSD and sediment textures along the MD between SW and NE monsoons based on 183 surficial sediment samples collected along the MD during two field surveys carried-out in October 2016 and February-March 2017. Compared to the GSD during the SW and NE monsoon, the GSD along the MD changed significantly, especially in the estuary areas and along the coast of Bac Lieu and Ganh Hao. Whereas, in the west coast of the MD, GSD seem no changes between the two seasons. These changes in seabed sediment suggest that sediment with grain-sizes ranging from silt to fine sand can be transported during only a NE season.

  • Particle materials sink in bottom and dissolved inorganic substances release from sediment and many kinds of materials continuously exchange in sediment and water column as well as transfer and transformation in sediment. The study of sediment quality means the state of sediment pollution relation of the water quality, sediment biota, materials fluxes between sediment and water column, transformation of materials in sediment is being important in recent. The state of sediment quality imply that the history of water pollution for long time, because the sediment quality does not change temporally. The sediment quality of bottom water can be used as a good indicator of pollution at present and in future. The major index of sediment qualities are the content of nutrients and hazard materials such as metals, Ignition Loss (IL), Total Sulfur (TS), Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP), sediment COD, color, odor and the release of nutrients from sediment. However, there are some arguments between researchers about compare to estimation of sediment quality and sampling and analysis of sediment. In this study, I will introduce the method of sediment sampling, analyzing and estimating of the sediment pollution.

  • Hydraulic characteristics affecting sediment transport capacity due to the weir operations were investigated and developed sediment rating curves for four gaging stations (Nakdong, Gumi, Waegwan, and Jindong) in Nakdong River. Analysis found that the sediment transportaion capability had been decreased and it could be proved from the field measurement records in 2013. Applicabilities of nine sediment transport prediction techniques, which are imbeded in GUIDE program, were examined and adopted for the four gaging stations. Analysis of sediment balance for Nakdong River, including 9 major tributaries, had been carried out with pseudo 2-D numerical model and found that: 1) sedimentation phenomena will be prevailed along the Nakdong River. 2) Engelund-Hansen technique shows the least error in estimation of sediment balance. 3) Engelund-Hansen technique most appropriately describes the sediment characteristics for four gaging stations. 4) Estimated error from the sediment balance for Nakdong River was smaller than the error caused by the estimation of sediment incomming from 9 tributries. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the accuracy of predicting the sediment incomming from the tributaties for better sediment balance analysis.

  • The subject of sediment transport has been studied for centuries by engineers and river morpohologists. Many of the complex aspects of sediment transport are yet to be understood, and remain among the challenging subject for future studies. In this study, the finite element model is applied to various hypothetical channels. On the basis of the flow analysis results, sediment transport analysis is conducted using 3-different optional equations, and the results are compared with experimental results. For the purpose of predicting the sediment movements in natural river, RMA model is applied to Geum-River. It turned out to be very effective tool to predict various aspects of river evolution and the effects of hydraulic structures. The simulation results are also linked to the Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

  • The sediment transport by waves, wave-induced current and tidal current was calculated using the TRANSPOR2004, then the seasonal sediment budget was analyzed. Also, annual sediment budget was calculated, and sediment circulation patterns was deduced in the broad area including Haeundae beach. A sediment mainly inflows from the east coast of the beach and then moves to the eastward to the Dongback Is, where the 80% of inflow sediment transported to the eastward as a longshore sediment while 20% of them going out to the offshore at the center of the beach. Above results shows a good agreement with the sediment transport trend analysis results by the Gao model.
