  • In situ particle size and volume concentration of suspended sediment was measured at the mouth of Seomjin River Estuary In February 2001, using an optical instrument, 'LISST-100'. Time variation of in situ particle size and concentration shows: (1) during ebb tide, Seomjin River supplies relatively fine-grained particles with less-fluctuated, compared to during flood tide, and well-behaved concentrations following the tidal cycle; and (2) during flood tide, relatively coarse-grained particles with highly variable in size distribution and concentration flow upstream from Kwangyang Bay. This explains a poor correlation $(r^{2}=0.10)$ between sediment concentration and beam attenuation coefficient during flood and a high degree of correlation $(r^{2}=0.80)$ during ebb tide. Relatively fine grained and well defined, monotonous size distribution may promote the correlation between concentration and beam attenuation coefficient due to optical homogeneity of particles during ebb tide. Abundance of large aggregates with time-varying size and shape distributions may be mainly responsible for variations in optical properties of the sediment during flood tide, and thus may confound the relationship between the two variables. The difference in particle sizes and shapes between flood and ebb tides can also be observed on SEM images.

  • Most natural river reach are approximately balanced with respect to sediment inflow and outflow. Dam construction dramatically alters this balance, creating an impounded river reach characterized by extremely low flow velocities and efficient sediment trapping. The impounded reach will accumulate sediment and lose storage capacity until a balance is again achieved, which would normally occur after the impoundment has become "filled up" with sediment and can no longer provide water storage and other benefits. This paper aims to investigate the sediment removal process in dam reservoir using simultaneously pressure flushing operation and vibrator machine. The main objective of this study is to identify the effect of vibrator in flushing cone dimensions. To achieve the objectives of present study, laboratory test have conducted under different hydraulic conditions such as two bottom outlets with diameter equal to 2" and 3", five discharges 0.23, 0.53, 1.21, 1.53 and 2.1 lit/s and only one water depth above the center of bottom outlets. Using the vibrator machine mounted into the reservoir and close to the bottom outlet, different frequency e.g. 20, 35 and 50 HZ, have been introduced to the deposited sediment at the vicinity of outlet. The results indicate that the volume and width of flushing cone are strongly affected by frequency of vibrations. The results indicate that the volume and width of flushing cone are strongly affected by frequency of vibrations.

  • Pleikrong reservoir with a concrete gravity dam that impound more than 1 billion cubic meter storage volume is one of the largest reservoir in Central Highland of Vietnam. Sedimentation is a major problem in this area and it becomes more severe due to the effect of climate change. Over time, it gradually reduces the reservoir storage capacity affecting to the reliability of water and power supply. This study aims to integrate the soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) model with 14 bias-corrected GCM/RCM models under two emissions scenarios, representative concentration pathway (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 to estimate sediment inflow to Pleikrong reservoir in the long term period. The result indicated that the simulated total amount of sediment deposited in the reservoir from 2010 to 2018 was approximately 39 mil m3 which is a 17% underestimate compared with the observed value of 47 mil m3. The results also show the reduction in reservoir storage capacity due to sedimentation ranges from 25% to 62% by 2050, depending on the different climate change models. The reservoir reduced storage volume's rate in considering the impact of climate change is much faster than in the case of no climate change. The outcomes of this study will be helpful for a sustainable and climate-resilient plan of sediment management for the Pleikrongreservoir.

  • The purpose of this study is an experimental research to investigate the effectiveness of debris flow reduction structures when a debris flow disaster occurs on a steep slope. The control structure for debris flow took the form of baffle, and the soil deposition area and soil runout distance due to debris flow from the downstream were investigated according to the installation number of baffle and each specification. As the slope of the channel became steeper, the sediment deposition area and runout distance increased, and as the sediment volume concentration decreased, the sediment deposition area and runout distance increased. When the sediment concentration was low, differences appeared depending on the slope of the channel because the debris flow had a high liquid content. Overall, the larger the sediment volume concentration, the greater the decrease in sediment deposition area and soil runout distance. As the number of baffles increases, the soil deposition area and runout decrease, showing that the baffles have the ability to control debris flows. The results of this research will provide good information when installing attenuation or control structures when sediment disasters occur in steep slopes.

  • AGNPS model is an event-based model to analyze nonpoint-source and to examine potential water quality problems from agricultural watershed. This model uses a square grid-cell system to represent the spatial variability of watershed conditions, and simulates runoff, sediment, and nutrient transport for each cell. AGNPS model was applied on Yeonwha watershed, and the test results were compared with the measured data for runoff volume, peak runoff rate, suspended solids, and phosphorus concentration. The watershed of 278.8 ha was divided into 278 cells, each of which was 1 ha in size. The coefficients of determination for runoff volume and peak flow were (0.893 and 0.801 respectively from regression of the estimated values on the measured values. The concentration of suspendid solid was increased but decreased that of phosphate with runoff volume.

  • In this experiment the effects of the packing structure of pigment on the surface characteristics (smoothness and gloss) of coated paper are studied. Four different kinds of inorganic pigments(clay), ground calcium carbonate(GCC), two of precipitated calcium carbonates(PCC), and two organic pigments(solid bead and hollow type) were used. The method of measuring the relative sediment volume(RSV) was used to analyze the packing structure of coating layer. The relative sediment volume was measured, using the pressure dewatering dry-cake method(PDDM) and centrifuge method. Also, the particle size distribution of coating pigment was determined. The results showed that small amount of organic pigment, added to inorganic pigment, improved smoothness and its effect was greater when GCC was used as inorganic pigment. The efficiency of organic pigment depended upon the inorganic pigment since the organic pigment is packed in the pores formed by the inorganic pigment.

  • Several methods have been proposed to control the sedimentation process. These include catchment management, flushing, sluicing, density current venting, and dredging. Flushing is used to erode previously deposited sediments. In pressurized flushing, the sediment in the vicinity of the outlet openings is scoured and a funnel shaped crater is created. In this study, the effect of localized vibrations in the sediment layers on the dimensions of the flushing cone was investigated experimentally. For this purpose, experiments were carried out with two bottom outlet diameters, five discharge releases for each desired water depth, and one water depth above the center of the bottom outlets. The results indicate that the volume and dimensions of the flushing cone are strongly affected by localized vibrations.

  • The effects of several factors including organic pigment blending and calending conditions on the surface and optical properties of coated paper were investigated. When clay and calcium carbonate are blended in the ratio of 7 to 3, highest smoothness and relative sediment volume were obtained. When organic pigments were added to the mixture of clay and calcium carbonate, the relative sediment volume did not changed significantly. However, when organic pigments were added to calcium carbonate, sheet gloss and smoothness were improved, and showed the better results than that obtained from the mixture of organic pigment and clay. When organic pigment is blended with clay, the particles of organic pigment are buried in the packing structure of coating layer. However, the particle shape of calcium carbonate is quite different from that of clay, and the aspect ratio of calcium carbonate is similar to that of organic pigment. Thus organic pigment particles are not buried and improved effectively the physical characteristics of coating layer. When the hollow sphere pigment was blended, opacity and sheet gloss were improved significantly. Even though the coating color applied was reduced, the similar level of opacity was maintained. Also, if particle size and void volume are increased, gloss is improved, because coating layer is easily transformed in calendering. Therefore, even though lower pressure was applied during calendering, the smoothness of surface of coating layer was improved, and the decrease of void volume in coating layer was reduced, and the quality of coated sheet can be improved.

  • The Sediment deposits in rivers and reservoirs are major components interfering with the useful function of the reservoirs, and clogging the inlet port at water intakes in rivers and erosion of pump impellers. Therefore, an accurate estimation method of sediment deposition is requisite to the efficient water resources investigation, planning and management. The objective of this paper is to forecast of reservoir sediment deposition using two dimensional model (SMS) to UnMun reservoir in GyeongSangBukDo. The RUSLE model showed that reservoirs volume was decreased $2,084.09{\times}10^6m^3$ after 50 years and $2,196.65{\times}10^6m^3$ after 100 years, which is plan flood level elevation (EL.152.12 m) reservoir. The two dimensional model showed that reservoirs volume was decreased $2,227.41{\times}10^6m^3$ after 50 years and $2,121.47{\times}10^6m^3$ after 100 years, which is plan flood level elevation (EL.152.12 m) reservoir. The results of this application showed that the use of two dimensional model was very effective for the estimation sediment deposits throughout the reservoir.
