Sediment contains a high fraction of organic matter, high buffering capacity, and a large portion of fine grained particles such as silt and clay, which are major barriers to remove heavy metals from sediments. In this study, a lab-scale electrokinetic (EK) technique was applied to remove heavy metals effectively from marine sediment at a constant voltage gradient of 2 V/cm. A concentration of 0.1 M of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), citric acid (CA), $HNO_3$, and HCl were circulated in the cathode, and tap water was circulated in the anode. CA extracted 92.4% of Ni, 96.1% of Cu, 97.1% of Zn, and 88.1% of Pb from marine sediment. A higher voltage gradient enhanced the transport of citrate and EDTA into the sediment and, therefore, increased metal extraction from the marine sediment through a complexation reaction between metals and the chelates. Based on these results, the electrokinetic process using a high voltage gradient with EDTA and CA might be useful to extract heavy metals from marine sediment.

Soil remediation technologies were experimented to evaluate whether the technologies could be used to apply remediation of contaminated marine sediment. In this research, marine sediments were sampled at "Ulsan" and "Jinhae" where remediation projects are considered, and then the possibility of heavy metal removal was evaluated throughout the technologies. Heavy metal concentration of silt and clay fraction was higher than that of sand fraction at "Ulsan". Heavy metal removal of the silt and clay fraction was arsenic (As) 81.5%, mercury (Hg) 93.8% by particle separation, cadmium (Cd) 72.2%, mercury (Hg) 93.8% by soil washing technology, cadmium (Cd) 70.8%, lead (Pb) 65.6% by another soil washing technology. Based on experimental results, tested particle separation and soil washing technologies could be used to remove heavy metals of sand fraction and silt and clay fraction. Heavy metal removal by soil washing technology which was composed of separation, washing and physical or chemical reaction by additives such as acid, organic solvents was more effective comparing to that of particle separation. Since heavy metal concentration of all treated samples was suitable for national soil standards, all the tested technologies were could be used not only to remove heavy metals of marine contaminated sediment but also to reuse treated samples in land.

Water quality is affected by the pollutants flowing into rivers since the interaction between water bodies and sediments in various environmental conditions. Especially, accumulation of sediments increases in the stagnant water areas due to a relative long hydrological retention time in the water bodies. Therefore, it is an important factor of water quality to understand characterization of the material behavior in water bodies and sediments. In this study, the objective of the conditional experiments was small and medium sized streams located in Gyeonggi-do. To estimate how the changes of fluoride behavior, depending on the pH, ion type, concentration, and clay contents. The pH results showed a trend that adsorption amount of fluorine decreased and the dissolution of fluorine increased following by pH increasing. The concentration and type of ions results showed that $Cl^-$ and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ ions had no significant effect on the adsorption ability of fluorine, the amount of dissolution was increased because $OH^-$ ion had active competition with fluorine in the reaction. The ingredient of sediment results showed that the amounts of fluoride adsorption and dissolution were reduced in samples, which contain relatively large amounts of Silt and Clay components. This means that the environmental conditions of water bodies greatly affect the adsorption and dissolution of fluoride in the sediments, so that proper management of fluoride in the sediments must precede an understanding of the environmental conditions of the water bodies.
Laboratory studies were carried out to measure the sound velocity (V/SUB p/) and quality factor (Q/SUB p/, inverse attenuation) in the horizontal (H) and vertical (V) direction on the core sampled sediment of deep-sea basin (1,850 meter water depth), East Sea of Korea (Sea of Japan). Sampled core was about 250 cm long and 500 kHz ultrasonic p-wave transducer was used for a sound soured. V/SUB p/ varies from 1,480 m/sec to 1,500 m/sec, it is not clear which direction is faster, V/SUB PH/ or V/SUB pv/, within${\pm}$ 1.0% anisotropy (A/SUB p/). It is thought because the core sediment facies is highly (or slightly) bioturbated homogeneous mud with very high porosity (more than 80%). The general trend of Q/SUB p/ is decreasing 10 to 5 with the buried depth, it is strongly affected by the variation of sediment texture (increasing silt, decreasing clay) with increasing of CaCO$_3$ and organic matter content, But Q/SUB PH/ is jumping up to 14.9 near the bottom of core sediment as including volcanic ash richly. The relationship between V/SUB PH/ and Q/SUB PH/ shows the mirror image nearly, it is interpreted that not only the geotechnical properties and texture but also sea-water characteristics (high Q/SUB p/, low V/SUB p/) according to rich water content affect strongly in the upper part of the unconsolidated deep-sea basin sediment.

This study researched and compared the sedimentation environment and photosynthetic pigments at Gomso (GS) -bay, Yoja (YJ) -bay and KangJin (KJ) -bay in May, 2012. It was shown that KJ-bay consist of C (clay) and M (mud), and GS-bay consists of Zs (silty sand) and Sz (sandy silt). Averagely, IL of YJ-bay was 4.98%, KJ-bay 6.10%, and GS-bay 1.45%. As for COD concentration, there were no places that exceeded Japanese sediment contamination standard 20 mg/g-dry. As for AVS concentration, in case of KJ-bay, two places exceeded Japanese sediment contamination standard 0.2 mg/g-dry. If we look into the average C/N ratio of bays, YJ-bay showed 8.50, KJ-bay 6.60, and GS-bay 5.52, thus all of them showed the characteristic of oceanic origin. As for the plankton make-up classified by photosynthetic pigments, diatom was dominant, and both ratios of pigment and C/chlorophyll. a showed the relatively lower distribution at GS-bay than at KJ-bay and YJ-bay. It is judged that this is related to the characteristic of flow-in, and it implies that predation process and decomposition by organic matters actively occurs at YJ-bay and KJ-bay.
In order to investigate change of shear strength of coastal muddy sediment by mixing pretreated oyster shells with different pyrolysis temperatures and particle sizes, a vane shear test was carried out. The shear strength of the sediment with oyster shells pyrolyzed at 800℃ was twice higher than that of the control, with a maximum shear strength of ca. 0.2 kPa. The Ca2+ concentration in the pore water was the highest at sediment with oyster shells pyrolyzed at 800℃ with a concentration of ca. 790 mg/L. From the above results, it is concluded that the application of the oyster shells pyrolyzed at 800℃ can affect the increase in shear strength of coastal sediments through the aggregation of clay particles and pozzolanic reactions with sediments.
As sediment contamination problems have recently been raised in Korea, the need for technologies to remove contaminants in sediments has increased. Contaminated sediments in Korea has been annually dredged and treated using processes of coagulation/flocculation, sedimentation on barges, dewatered and dried at prepared site, and then disposed at a landfill site, which is very costly, and only a limited landfill space available in Korea. Contaminants in media containing a high percentage of silt and clay sized particles, typically, are strongly adsorbed on the particles and difficult to remove. Particle separation processes that separate the fine clay and silt particles from the coarser sand and gravel and concentrate the contaminants into a smaller volume of sediment that can be further treated of disposed of, are very effective in the post step processes. In this study are to test the feasibility of treating dredged sediments using a hydrocyclone process, and to estimate design parameters for a pilot scale test. A hydrocyclone was operated to separate larger particles from the sediments. It was found that the particle separation was greatly affected by the solid contents and inlet pressure in the hydrocyclone.

A gravity core (RS14-C2) was collected at site RS14-C2 in the continental slope to the east of Pennell-Isellin Bank of the Ross Sea (Antarctica) during PNRA XXIX (Rosslope II Project) Expedition. In order to trace the sediment source, magnetic susceptibility (MS), sand fraction, and clay mineral compositions were analyzed, and AMS $^{14}C$ ages were dated. Core sediments consist mostly of hemipelagic sandy clay or silty clay including ice-rafted debris (IRD). AMS $^{14}C$ age of core-top indicates the modern and Holocene sediments. Based on AMS $^{14}C$ dating, sediment color, MS and sand fraction, core sediments are divided into interglacial and glacial intervals. The interglacial brown sediments are characterized by low MS and sand fraction, whereas the glacial gray sediments are characterized by high MS and sand fraction. Among clay mineral compositions of core sediments, illite is highest (61.8~76.7%), and chlorite (15.7~21.3%), kaolinite (3.6~15.4%), and smectite (0.9~5.1%) are in decreasing order, and these compositions are also divided into the interglacial and glacial/deglacial intervals. During the glacial period, the high content of illite and chlorite indicate sediment supply from the bedrocks of Transantarctic Mountains under the Ross Ice Sheet. In contrast, because of decreasing supply of illite and chlorite by the glacial retreat, smectite and kaolinite contents increased relatively during the interglacial period. During the interglacial period, smectite may be transported additionally by the northeastward flowing surface current from the coast of Victoria Land in the western Ross Sea. Kaolinite may be also supplied to the continental slope by the Antarctic Slope Current from the kaolin-rich metasedimentary rock outcropped on the Edward VII Peninsula.
We studied the difference between the clay mineral content in the bulk marine sediments (absolute clay mineral composition) and clay mineral content only in total clay minerals (relative clay mineral composition) of the Yellow Sea marine sediments, and correlated the relationship between their distribution patterns. We used 56 Yellow Sea Surface sediments collected at the second cruise in 2001 of KORDI, and determined the absolute mineral composition using the quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis. Yellow Sea surface sediments consist of primary rock forming minerals including quartz (average 44.7%), plagioclase (15.9%), alkali feldspar (10.0%), hornblende (2.8%) together with clay minerals (illite 15.3%, chlorite 2.6% and kaolinite 1%) and carbonates (calcite 1.7%, aragonite 0.6%). Absolute clay mineral contents are very high in the region extending from the southeast of Sandong Peninsula to the southwest of Jeju Island. In contrast, it is very low along the margin of the Yellow Sea. Such distribution patterns of absolute clay mineral content are very similar to those of fine-grained sediments in the study area. The average relative clay mineral composition of illite, chlorite, and kaolinite is respectively 80.3%, 14.9% and 4.8%. The distribution pattern of relative mineral composition shows very different phenomenon when compared with those of absolute mineral composition, and also do not exhibit any positive relationship with that of fine-grained sediments in which clay mineral composition is abundant. Therefore, we suggest that the relative clay mineral compositions and their distribution patterns must be used very carefully when interpreting the origin of sediment provenance.
This study was conducted to estimate the decomposition capacity for organic matter by microbe of tidal flat sediments (Hajae, Dongjin and Mankyung). The decomposition rate constants (K') have been determined by Thomas slope method and compared with the values of each tidal flats. The decomposition rates of organic matter by microbe were initially very slow, but at the end of 12 hours, very sharply increased. The values of decomposition rate constant for Dongjin, Mankyung and Hajae tidal flat sediment were 1.364$day^{-1}$/, 1.080d$day^{-1}$ and 0.735$day^{-1}$, respectively. The decomposition rate constant of Dongjin tidal flat sediment which affected by livestock wastewater was higher than others. The decomposition quantity (mg/g/day) of organic matter by microbe of tidal flat sediments was 0.4mg/g/day for Dongjin, 0.36mg/g/day for Mankyung and 0.36mg/g/day for Hajae. The average of decomposition quantity was 0.37mg/g/day. To calculate purification capacity (kg/ha) of organic matter by microbe, we applied to two assumption ; 1) biological action by microbe is occur within 0.1cm under surface 2) specific gravity of sediment are 2.5g/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The purification capacity of organic matter by microbe of tidal flat sediment was calculated to 9.25kg/ha. The relationships between decomposition rate constant (K') and ignition loss (I. L), chemical oxygen demand by sediment (CO $D_{sed}$), total carbon(TC), silt and clay as index of organic matter were a high positive($R^2$=0.97~1.00).
