A smart meter is one of the core components in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) that is responsible for providing effective control and monitor of electrical energy consumptions. The multifunction tasks that a smart meter carries out such as facilitating two-way communication between utility providers and consumers, managing metering data, delivering anomalies reports, analyzing fault and power quality, simply show that there are huge amount of data exchange in smart metering networks (SMNs). These data are prone to security threats due to high dependability of SMNs on Internet-based communication, which is highly insecure. Therefore, there is a need to identify all possible security threats over this network and propose suitable countermeasures for securing the communication between smart meters and utility provider office. This paper studies the architecture of the smart grid communication networks, focuses on smart metering networks and discusses how such networks can be vulnerable to security attacks. This paper also presents current mechanisms that have been used to secure the smart metering networks from specific type of attacks in SMNs. Moreover, we highlight several open issues related to the security and privacy of SMNs which we anticipate could serve as baseline for future research directions.
Sensor networks are composed of provide low powered, inexpensive distributed devices which can be deployed over enormous physical spaces. Coordination between sensor devices is required to achieve a common communication. In low cost, low power and short-range wireless environment, sensor networks cope with significant resource constraints. Security is one of main issues in wireless sensor networks because of potential adversaries. Several security protocols and models have been implemented for communication on computing devices but deployment these models and protocols into the sensor networks is not easy because of the resource constraints mentioned. Memory intensive encryption algorithms as well as high volume of packet transmission cannot be applied to sensor devices due to its low computational speed and memory. Deployment of sensor networks without security mechanism makes sensor nodes vulnerable to potential attacks. Therefore, attackers compromise the network to accept malicious sensor nodes as legitimate nodes. This paper provides the different security models as a metric, which can then be used to make pertinent security decisions for securing wireless sensor network communication.

The expansion of new applications and business models is being significantly fueled by the development of Fifth Generation (5G) networks, which are becoming more widely accessible. The creation of the newest intelligent vehicular networks and applications is made possible by the use of Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) and Software Defined Networking (SDN). Researchers have been concentrating on the integration of SDN and VANET in recent years, and they have examined a variety of issues connected to the architecture, the advantages of software-defined VANET services, and the new features that can be added to them. However, the overall architecture's security and robustness are still in doubt and have received little attention. Furthermore, new security threats and vulnerabilities are brought about by the deployment and integration of novel entities and a number of architectural components. In this study, we comprehensively examine the good and negative effects of the most recent SDN-enabled vehicular network topologies, focusing on security and privacy. We examine various security flaws and attacks based on the existing SDVN architecture. Finally, a thorough discussion of the unresolved concerns and potential future study directions is provided.

With the advent of ubiquitous computing society, many advanced technologies have enabled wireless sensor networks which consist of small sensor nodes. However, the sensor nodes have limited computing resources such as small size memory, low battery life, short transmission range, and low computational capabilities. Thus, decreasing energy consumption is one of the most significant issues in wireless sensor networks. In addition, numerous applications for wireless sensor networks are recently spreading to various fields (health-care, surveillance, location tracking, unmanned monitoring, nuclear reactor control, crop harvesting control, u-city, building automation etc.). For many of them, supporting security functionalities is an indispensable feature. Especially in case wireless sensor networks should provide a sufficient variety of security functions, sensor nodes are required to have more powerful performance and more energy demanding features. In other words, simultaneously providing security features and saving energy faces a trade-off problem. This paper presents a novel energy-efficient security architecture in an IEEE 802.15.4-based wireless sensor network called the Hybrid Adaptive Security (HAS) framework in order to resolve the trade off issue between security and energy. Moreover, we present a performance analysis based on the experimental results and a real implementation model in order to verify the proposed approach.

Vehicular networks are part of the next generation wireless and smart Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). In the future, autonomous vehicles will be an integral part of ITS and will provide safe and reliable traveling features to the users. The reliability and security of data transmission in vehicular networks has been a challenging task. To manage data transmission in vehicular networks, road networks are divided into clusters and a cluster head is selected to handle the data. The selection of cluster heads is a challenge as vehicles are mobile and their connectivity is dynamically changing. In this paper, a novel secure cluster head selection algorithm is proposed for secure and reliable data sharing. The idea is to use the secrecy rate of each vehicle in the cluster and adaptively select the most secure vehicle as the cluster head. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the reliability and security of the transmission significantly.

Peer to Peer Networks play an increasing role in today's networks, also it's expected that this type of communication networks evolves more in the future. Since the number of users that is involved in Peer to Peer Networks is huge and will be increased more in the future, security issues will appear and increase as well. Thus, providing a sustainable solution is needed to ensure the security of Peer to Peer Networks. This paper is presenting a new protocol called Malicious Trust Managers Identification (MTMI). This protocol is used to ensure anonymity of trust manager, that computes and stores the trust value for another peer. The proposed protocol builds a secure connection between trust managers by using public key infrastructure. As well as experimental testing has been conducted to validate the proposed protocol.

Distributing a Certificate Revocation List (CRL) quickly to all vehicles in the system requires a very large number of road side units (RSUs) to be deployed. In reality, initial deployment stage of vehicle networks would be characterized by limited infrastructure as a result in very limited vehicle to infrastructure communication. However, every vehicle wants the most recent CRLs to protect itself from malicious users and malfunctioning equipments, as well as to increase the overall security of the vehicle networks. To address this challenge, we design and implement a nomadic device based CRL acquisition method using nomadic device's communication capability with cellular networks. When a vehicle could not directly communicate with nearby RSUs, the nomadic device acts as a security mediator to perform vehicle's security functions continuously through cellular networks. Therefore, even if RSUs are not deployed or sparsely deployed, vehicle's security threats could be minimized by receiving the most recent CRLs in a reasonable time.

Recent advancement in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) has paved the way for WSNs to enable in various environments in monitoring temperature, motion, sound, and vibration. These applications often include the detection of sensitive information from enemy movements in hostile areas or in locations of personnel in buildings. Due to characteristics of WSNs and dealing with sensitive information, wireless sensor nodes tend to be exposed to the enemy or in a hazard area, and security is a major concern in WSNs. Because WSNs pose unique challenges, traditional security techniques used in conventional networks cannot be applied directly, many researchers have developed various security protocols to fit into WSNs. To develop countermeasures of various attacks in WSNs, descriptions and analysis of current security attacks in the network layers must be developed by using a standard notation. However, there is no research paper describing and analyzing security models in WSNs by using a standard notation such as The Unified Modeling Language (UML). Using the UML helps security developers to understand security attacks and design secure WSNs. In this research, we provide standard models for security attacks by UML Sequence Diagrams to describe and analyze possible attacks in the three network layers.
