In this study, the effects of building-roof cooling on scalar dispersion in three-dimensional street canyons are investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. For this, surface temperature of building roof is systematically changed and non-reactive pollutants are released from street bottom in urban street canyons with the aspect ratio of 1. The characteristics of flow, air temperature, and non-reactive pollutant dispersion in the control experiment are analyzed first. Then, the effects of building-roof cooling are investigated by comparing the results with those in the control experiment. In the control experiment, a portal vortex which is a secondary flow induced by ambient air flow is formed in each street canyon. Averaged air temperature is higher inside the street canyon than in both sides of the street canyon, because warmer air is coming into the street canyon from the roof level. However, air temperature near the street bottom is lower inside the street canyon due to the inflow of cooler air from both sides of the street canyon. As building-roof temperature decreases, wind speed at the roof level increases and portal vortex becomes intensified (that is, downdraft, reverse flow, and updraft becomes stronger). Building-roof cooling contributes to the reduction of average concentration of the non-reactive pollutants and average air temperature in the street canyon. The results imply that building-roof cooling has positive effects on improvement of thermal environment and air quality in urban areas.
Significant piping wall thinning caused by Flow-Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) and Erosion-Corrosion (EC) continues to occur, even after the Mihama Power Station unit 3 secondary pipe rupture in 2004, in which workers were seriously injured or died. Nuclear power plants in many countries have experienced FAC and EC-related cases in steam cycle piping systems. Korea has also experienced piping wall thinning cases including thinning in the downstream straight pipe of a check valve in a feedwater pump line, the downstream elbow of a control valve in a feedwater flow control line, and failure of the straight pipe downstream of an orifice in an auxiliary steam return line. Cause analyses were performed by reviewing thickness data using Ultrasonic Techniques (UT) and, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images for the failed pipe, and numerical simulation results for FAC and EC cases in Korea Nuclear Power Plants. It was concluded that the main cause of wall thinning for the downstream pipe of a check valve is FAC caused by water vortex flow due to the internal flow shape of a check valve, the main cause of wall thinning for the downstream elbow of a control valve is FAC caused by a thickness difference with the upstream pipe, and the main cause of wall thinning for the downstream pipe of an orifice is FAC and EC caused by liquid droplets and vortex flow. In order to investigate more cases, additional analyses were performed with the review of a lot of thickness data for inspected pipes. The results showed that pipe wall thinning was also affected by the operating condition of upstream equipment. Management of FAC and EC based on these cases will focus on the downstream piping of abnormal or unusual operated equipment.
In this paper, the power of the energy harvesting circuit using the PVDF (Polyvinylidene fluoride) piezoelectric sensor transformed by vortex was analyzed. For power analysis, a general bridge diode rectifier circuit and a P-SSHI (Parallel Synchronized Switch Harvesting on Inductor) rectifier circuit with a switching circuit were used. The P-SSHI circuit is a circuit that incorporates a parallel synchronous switch circuit at the input of a general rectifier circuit to improve energy conversion efficiency. In this paper, the output power of general rectifier circuit and P-SSHI rectifier circuit is analyzed and verified through theory and experiment. It was confirmed that the efficiency was increased by 69 % through the experiment using the wind. In addition, a circuit for storing the harvested energy in the supercapacitor was implemented to confirm its applicability as a secondary battery.

Counter-rotating axial flow fan(CRF) consists of two counter-rotating rotors without stator blades. CRF shows the complex flow characteristics of the three-dimensional, viscous, and unsteady flow fields. For the understanding of the entire core flow in CRF, it is necessary to investigate the three-dimensional unsteady flow field between the rotors. This information is also essential to improve the aerodynamic characteristics and to reduce the aerodynamic noise level and vibration characteristics of the CRF. In this paper, experimental study on the three-dimensional unsteady flow of the CRF is performed at the design point(operating point). Flow fields in the CRF are measured at the cross-sectional planes of the upstream and downstream of each rotor using the $45^{\circ}$ inclined hot-wire. The phase-locked averaged hot-wire technique utilizes the inclined hot-wire, which rotates successively with 120 degree increments about its own axis. Three-dimensional unsteady flow characteristics such as tip vortex, secondary flow and tip leakage flow in the CRF are shown in the form of the axial, radial and tangential velocity vector plot and velocity contour. The phase-locked averaged velocity profiles of the CRF are analyzed by means of the stationary unsteady measurement technique. At the mean radius of the front rotor inlet and the outlet, the phase-locked averaged velocity profiles show more the periodical flow characteristics than those of the hub region. At the tip region of the CRF, the axial velocity is decreased due to the boundary layer effect of the fan casing and the tip vortex flow. The radial and the tangential velocity profiles show the most unstable and unsteady flow characteristics compared with other position of rotors. But, the phase-locked averaged velocity profiles of the downstream of the rear rotor show the aperiodic flow pattern due to the mixture of the front rotor wake period and the rear rotor rotational period.

The present study analyzed the effect of film hole position of 45 degree ribbed cooling channel on film cooling performance of gas turbine blades. We also investigated the influence of the ribs under the fixed blowing ratio. Three-dimensional numerical model was constructed and extensive simulation was conducted using the commercial code (Fluent ver. 17.0) under steady-state condition. Base on the simulation results, We investigated the cooling effectiveness, flow velocity, streamline, and pressure coefficient. Moreover, We analyzed the effect of cooling hole position on ejection of the secondary flow caused by the rib structure. From the results, It was found that internal flow of the cooling channel forms a vortex pair in the counterclockwise from the top side, and clockwise from the bottom side. For the channels with ribs, the vortex flow generated by the ribs caused a higher pressure difference near the hole outlet, resulting in at least 12% higher cooling effectiveness than the channel without ribs. Additionally, when the hole is located on the left side of the ribbed channel (Rib-Left), it can be found that the secondary flow generated by the ribs hits against wall surface near the hole to form a flow in the direction of the hole inclination angle. Therefore, It is considered that the region where the cooling gas discharged to the blade surface stays in the main flow boundary layer is wider than the other cases. In this case, The largest pressure coefficient difference was observed near the outlet of the hole, and as a result, the discharge of the cooling gas was accelerated and the cooling efficiency was slightly increased.
Turbulent flow structure in the high amplitude meandering channel is complex due to secondary recirculation with helicoidal motions and shear layers formed by flow separation from the curved sidewall. In this work, the secondary flow and the superelevation of the water surface produced in the high-amplitude Kinoshita channel are reproduced by the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) computations using the VOF technique for resolving the variation of water surface elevation and three statistical turbulence models ($k-{\varepsilon}$, RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$, $k-{\omega}$ SST). The numerical results computed by a second-order accurate finite volume method are compared with an existing experimental measurement. Among applied turbulence models, $k-{\omega}$ SST model relatively well predicts overall distribution of the secondary recirculation in the Kinoshita channel, while all three models yield similar prediction of water superelevation transverse slope. The secondary recirculation driven by the radial acceleration in the upstream bend affects the flow structure in the downstream bend, which yields a pair of counter-rotating vortices at the bend apex. This complex flow pattern is reasonably well reproduced by the $k-{\omega}$ SST model. Both $k-{\varepsilon}$ based models fail to predict the clockwise-rotating vortex between a pair of counter-rotating vortices which was observed in the experiment. Regardless of applied turbulence models, the present computations using the VOF method appear to well reproduce the superelevation of water surface through the meandering channel.

The flow characteristics around KRISO 3600TEU container ship model have been experimentally investigated in a circulating water channel. The instantaneous velocity vectors were measured using 2-frame PIV measurement system. The mean velocity fields and turbulent statistics including turbulent kinetic energy and vorticity were obtained by ensemble-averaging 400 instantaneous velocity fields. The free stream velocity was fixed at 0.6m/s and the corresponding Reynolds number was $9{\times}10^5$. The test sections were divided into two regions, three transverse sections of the wake region(Station -0.5767, -1, -3) and five longitudinal sections of the wake((Z/(B/2)=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6). In the wake region, large-scale longitudinal vortices of nearly same strength are symmetric with respect to the wake centerline and a relatively weak secondary vortex is formed near the waterline. With going downstream, the strength of longitudinal vortex is decreased and the wake region expands.

The present study investigates heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics in a ribbed rotating passage with turning region. The duct has an aspect ratio (W/H) of 0.5 and a hydraulic diameter ($D_h$) of 26.67 mm. Rib turbulators are attached in the cross arrangement on the leading and trailing surfaces of the passage. The ribs have a rectangular cross section of $2\;mm\;(e){\times}\;mm\;(w)$ and an attack angle of $70^{\circ}$. The pitch-to-rib height ratio (p/e) is 7.5, and the rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio ($e/D_h$) is 0.075. The rotation number ranges from 0.0 to 0.20 while the Reynolds number is constant at 10,000. To verify the heat/mass transfer augmentation, internal flow structures are calculated for the same conditions using a commercial code FLUENT 6.1. The heat transfer data of the smooth duct for various Ro numbers agree well with not only the McAdams correlation but also the previous studies. The cross-rib turbulators significantly enhance heat/mass transfer in the passage by disturbing the main flow near the surfaces and generating one asymmetric cell of secondary flow skewing along the ribs. Because the secondary flow is induced in the first-pass and turning region, heat/mass transfer discrepancy is observed in the second-pass even for the stationary case. When the passage rotates, heat/mass transfer and flow phenomena change. Especially, the effect of rotation is more dominant than the effect of the ribs at the higher rotation number in the upstream of the second-pass.
A number of components installed in the secondary system of nuclear power plants are exposed to aging mechanisms such as FAC (Flow-Accelerated Corrosion), Cavitation, Flashing, and LDIE (Liquid Droplet Impingement Erosion). Those aging mechanisms can lead to thinning of the components. In April 2013, one (1) inch small bore piping branched from the main steam line experienced leakage resulting from wall thinning in a 1,000 MWe Korean PWR nuclear power plant. During the normal operation, extracted steam from the main steam line goes to condenser through the small bore piping. The leak occurred in the downstream of an orifice. A control valve with vertical flow path was placed on in front of the orifice. This paper deals with UT (Ultrasonic Test) thickness data, SEM images, and numerical simulation results in order to analyze the extent of damage and the cause of leakage in the small bore piping. As a result, it is concluded that the main cause of the small bore pipe wall thinning is liquid droplet impingement erosion. Moreover, it is observed that the leak occurred at the reattachment point of the vortex flow in the downstream side of the orifice.

An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the flow and heat/mass transfer characteristics within a rectangular film cooling hole of normal injection angle for various blowing ratios and Reynolds numbers. The results are compared with those for the square hole. The experiments have been performed using a naphthalene sublimation method and the flow field has been analyzed by numerical calculation using a commercial code (FLUENT). The heat/mass transfer around the hole entrance region is enhanced considerably due to the reattachment of separated flow and the vortices generated within the hole. At the hole exit region, the heat/mass transfer increases because the main flow induces a secondary vortex. It is observed that the overall heat/mass transfer characteristics are similar to those for the square hole. However, the different heat/mass transfer patterns come out due to increased aspect ratio. Unlike the square hole, the heat/mass transfer on the trailing edge side of hole entrance region has two peak regions due to split flow reattachment, and heat/mass transfer on the hole exit region is less sensitive to the blowing ratios than the square hole.
