We investigated the activation of the cerebral cortex during active movement, passive movement, and functional electrical stimulation (FES), which was provided on wrist extensor muscles. A functional magnetic resonance imaging study was performed on 5 healthy volunteers. Tasks were the extension of right wrist by active movement, passive movement, and FES at the rate of .5 Hz. The regions of interest were measured in primary motor cortex (M1), primary somatosensory cortex (SI), secondary somatosensory cortex (SII), and supplementary motor area (SMA). We found that the contralateral SI and SII were significantly activated by all of three tasks. The additional activation was shown in the areas of ipsilateral S1 (n=2), and contralateral (n=1) or ipsilateral (n=2) SII, and bilateral SMA (n=3) by FES. Ipsilateral M1 (n=1), and contralateral (n=1) or ipsilateral SII (n=1), and contralateral SMA (n=1) were activated by active movement. Also, Contralateral SMA (n=3) was activated by passive movement. The number of activated pixels on SM1 by FES ($12{\pm}4$ pixels) was smaller than that by active movement ($18{\pm}4$ pixels) and nearly the same as that by passive movement ($13{\pm}4$ pixels). Findings reveal that active movement, passive movement, and FES had a direct effect on cerebral cortex. It suggests that above modalities may have the potential to facilitate brain plasticity, if applied with the refined-specific therapeutic intervention for brain-injured patients.
Secondary metabolites from the fruit body of Phellinus linteus were evaluated for their proliferative effect on human osteoblast-like cells. 3-[4,5-Dimethylthiazole-2-y1]-2,5-diphenyl-tetraxolium bromide (MTT) assay and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity assay were used to assess the effect those isolates on the human osteoblast-like cell line (Saos-2). Activity-guided fractionation led to the isolation of ALP-activating phenolic compounds through the extraction of P. linteus, solvent partitioning, and repeated silica gel and octadecyl silica gel (ODS) column chromatographic separations. From the result of spectroscopic data including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS), and infrared spectroscopy (IR), the chemical structures of the compounds were determined as 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-buten-2-one(1), 2-(3',4'-dihydroxyphenyl)-1,3-benzodioxole-5-aldehyde (2), 4-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-3-buten-2-one (3), 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (4), and protocatechuic acid methyl ester (5), respectively. This study reports the first isolation of compounds 1-3 and 5 from P. linteus. In addition, all phenolic compounds stimulated proliferation of the osteoblast-like cells and increased their ALP activity in a dose-dependent manner ($10^{-8}$ to $10^{-1}\;mg/mL$). The present data demonstrate that phenolic compounds in P. linteus stimulated mineralization in bone formation caused by osteoporosis. The bone-formation effect of P. linteus seems to be mediated, at least partly, by the stimulating effect of the phenolic compounds on the growth of osteoblasts.
With the development of computer program in calculation for torsional vibration of ship's propulsion shafting it has become possible to calculate all order's vibratory amplitude, vibratory torque, vibratory stress and synthesis value at all concerned revolutions by way of solving the vibratory equation directly. Though this kind of propulsion shafting vibration calculation method makes it possible to get generalized and precise result of calculation, the unexpected critical crankshaft torsional vibration has still appeared in maneuvering range of the engine. A close investigation has been carried out to find out the cause for the 2-node propulsion shafting torsional vibration of the crankshaft that exceeded the limitation value near the MCR 104rpm on the sea trial of the recently delivered 6000TEU class container vessel from HHIC. In conclusion, as the latest super-output engine with heavy crankshaft and propeller mass seems to be liable to 2-node torsional vibration of crankshaft, it is recommend that, in the design stage of propulsion shafting, its torsional vibration condition must be more carefully checked.
Second-order rate constants have been measured spectrophotometrically for the Michael-type reaction of 1-(Xsubstituted phenyl)-2-propyn-1-ones (2a-f) with amines in $H_2O$ at 25.0 ${\pm}$ 0.1 ${^{\circ}C}$. A linear Brønsted-type plot is obtained with ${\beta}_{nuc}$ = 0.25 ${\pm}$ 0.02, a typical $\beta_{nuc}$ value for reactions which proceed through a stepwise mechanism with attack of amine on the electrophilic center being the rate-determining step. Secondary alicyclic amines are found to be more reactive than isobasic primary amines. The Hammett plot for the reactions of 2a-f with morpholine is not linear, i.e., the substrate with a strong electron-donating group (e.g., 4-MeO) exhibits a negative deviation from the Hammett plot. However, the Yukawa-Tsuno plot for the same reactions exhibits an excellent linear correlation with ρ = 0.62 and r = 0.82. Thus, it has been proposed that the nonlinear Hammett plot is not due to a change in the ra te-determining step but due to ground-state stabilization through resonance interactions.
This report describes a case of dizziness in a patient with trigeminal neuralgia that was caused by a vestibular schwannoma. A 60-year-old man with a history of pain on his left cheek, chin, molar and tongue for 5 months was diagnosed as suffering with trigeminal neuralgia of the left mandibular nerve, and this was caused by a left vestibular schwannoma. The diagnosis of the tumor was confirmed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and so gamma knife surgery was performed 1 month later. At that time, the patient had been referred to the pain clinic due to allodynia on the tongue and gingival, and hypesthesia was also present on the left half of the face. Trigeminal nerve block with dehydrogenated alcohol and stellate ganglion block with 1% mepivacaine were performed and oral medication with diphenylhydantoin was started. The symptoms were alleviated after nerve block and oral medication. Dizziness, blurred vision and ataxia then developed from the 13th hospital day. We considered the symptoms as a side effect of diphenylhydantoin and we reduced the dose of diphenylhydantoin. However, the symptoms grew worse. Another brain MRI showed a slight increase of the tumor size and a mass effect with displacement of the adjacent organs, and hydrocephalus was also noted. This case shows the importance of considering the secondary symptoms that are due to brain tumor while treating trigeminal neuralgia. The changes of the brain tumors should also be considered along with the presence of new side effects.
The acromioclavicular-hook-plate is one of the surgical treatments for distal clavicle fracture and traumatic acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocation. Although this procedure can obtain rigid and accurate anatomical reduction of the AC joint, secondary widening of the hook-hole in the acromion is often seen during postoperative follow-up. This complication is owing to the high-degree of mobility of the AC joint. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the effect on these complications due to the position of the hook-hole. The purpose of the present study is to investigate three-dimensionally the effect due to the position of the hook-hole during arm abduction motion. We studied in vivo and three-dimensional kinematics of the normal shoulder joint with use of a markerless bone-registration technique. Magnetic resonance images of 14 shoulders of 7 healthy volunteers were acquired in 7 positions between $0^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$ of abduction. We created three-dimensional computer models of the bones and the acromioclavicular-hook-plate. Based on the three-dimensional kinematics data, we simulated the widening of the hook-hole each different positioning of the hook-hole. The widths of the hook-holes almost linearly increased. And these widths significantly increased, when we put the hook-hole on the acromion from AC joint to 20 mm and 25 mm posterior position.
Second-order rate constants ($k_N$) have been measured spectrophotometrically for the reactions of benzyl 2-pyridyl carbonate $\mathbf{7}$ and $t$-butyl 2-pyridyl carbonate $\mathbf{8}$ with a series of alicyclic secondary amines in $H_2O$ at $25.0^{\circ}C$. Substrate $\mathbf{8}$ is less reactive than $\mathbf{7}$. Steric hindrance exerted by the bulky $t$-Bu group of $\mathbf{8}$ has been suggested to be responsible for the decreased reactivity. The Br${\o}$nsted-type plots for the reactions of $\mathbf{7}$ and $\mathbf{8}$ are linear with ${\beta}_{nuc}=0.49$ and 0.44, respectively, which is typical for reactions reported previously to proceed through a concerted mechanism. Aminolyses of $\mathbf{7}$ and $\mathbf{8}$ were expected to proceed through a zwitterionic tetrahedral intermediate $T^{\pm}$, which would be stabilized through an intramolecular H-bonding interaction. However, the kinetic results suggest that the reactions proceed through a concerted mechanism. The H-bonding interaction in $T^{\pm}$ has been suggested to accelerate the rate of leaving-group expulsion from $T^{\pm}$. Another factor that might accelerate expulsion of the leaving group is the "push" provided by the RO group in $T^{\pm}$ through resonance interactions. Thus, it has been concluded that the enhanced nucleofugality through the H-bonding interaction and the "push" provided by the RO group forces the reactions to proceed through a concerted mechanism.
A kinetic study is reported for nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4-pyridyl X-substituted benzoates 7a-e with a series of alicyclic secondary amines in H2O. The Br${\o}$nsted-type plot for the reactions of 4-pyridyl benzoate 7c is linear with ${\beta}_{nuc}$ = 0.71. The corresponding reactions of 2-pyridyl benzoate 6, which is less reactive than 7c, resulted in also a linear Br${\o}$nsted-type plot with ${\beta}_{nuc}$ = 0.77. The fact that the more reactive 7c results in a smaller ${\beta}_{nuc}$ value appears to be in accord with the reactivity-selectivity principle. The aminolysis of 7c has been suggested to proceed through a stepwise mechanism in which breakdown of the intermediate is the rate-determining step (RDS). The Hammett plot for the reactions of 7a-e with piperidine consists of two intersecting straight lines, i.e., ${\rho}_X$ = 1.47 for substrates possessing an electron-donating group (EDG) and ${\rho}_X$ = 0.91 for those possessing an electron-withdrawing group (EWG). In contrast, the corresponding Yukawa-Tsuno plot exhibits excellent linear correlation with ${\rho}_X$ = 0.79 and r = 0.56. Thus, it has been concluded that the nonlinear Hammett plot is not due to a change in the RDS but is caused by stabilization of the ground state of the substrates possessing an EDG through resonance interaction between the EDG and the C=O bond of the substrates.
A kinetic study on aminolysis of 4-chloro-2-nitrophenyl X-substituted-benzoates (6a-i) in MeCN is reported. The Hammett plot for the reactions of 6a-i with piperidine consists of two intersecting straight lines, while the Yukawa-Tsuno plot exhibits an excellent linear correlation with ${\rho}_X$ = 1.03 and r = 0.78. The nonlinear Hammett plot is not due to a change in rate-determining step (RDS) but is caused by the resonance stabilization of substrates possessing an electron-donating group in the benzoyl moiety. The Br${\phi}$nsted-type plot for the reactions of 4-chloro-2-nitrophenyl benzoate (6e) with a series of cyclic secondary amines is linear with ${\beta}_{nuc}$ = 0.69, an upper limit for reactions reported to proceed through a concerted mechanism. The aminolysis of 6e in aqueous medium has previously been reported to proceed through a stepwise mechanism with a change in RDS on the basis of a curved Br${\phi}$nsted-type plot. It has been concluded that instability of the zwitterionic tetrahedral intermediate ($T^{\pm}$) in MeCN forces the reaction to proceed through a concerted mechanism. This is further supported by the kinetic result that the amines used in this study are less reactive in MeCN than in $H_2O$, although they are more basic in MeCN over 7 $pK_a$ units.
