A main steam line break (MSLB) test at the ATLAS facility was simulated using the best-estimate thermal-hydraulic system code, MARS-KS. This has been performed as an activity at the third domestic standard problem for code benchmark (DSP-03) that has been organized by Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). The results of the MSLB experiment and the MARS input data prepared for the previous DSP-02 using the ATLAS facility were provided to participants. The preliminary MSLB simulation using the base input data, however, showed unphysical results in the primary-to-secondary heat transfer. To resolve the problems, some improvements were implemented in the MARS input modelling. These include the use of fine meshes for the bottom region of the steam generator secondary side and proper thermal-hydraulics calculation options. Other input model improvements in the heat loss and the flow restrictor models were also made and the results were investigated in detail. From the results of simulations, the limitations and further improvement areas of the MARS code were identified.
The carbon felt is usually hired as electrodes for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). In the study, surface modification of carbon felt under CO2 atmosphere with variables of operating various temperature ranges between 700℃ and 900℃. The qualitative and quantitative analysis were carried out such as scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to observe degree of surface modification. Result of XPS analysis confirmed increase of carbon and oxidation functional group on the surface with increase of temperature. SEM image was discovered similar phenomena. Electrochemical characteristics such as cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed the improved electrode performance with increase of temperature. However, the electrochemical performance under treatments temperature of 900℃ was less than that of under treatment temperature of 850℃ due to weight loss at the treatment temperature of 900℃. From the CV and EIS results, the best electrochemical characteristics was at the temperature of 850℃. That of at the temperature of 900℃ was decreased due to weight loss. The energy efficiencies (EE) obtained from full cell test were 69.37, 80.76, 82.45, and 75.47%, at the temperature of 700, 800, 850, and 900℃, respectively.
To investigate the flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC) dependency of carbon steel (A106 Gr. B) and low-alloy steels (1Cr-1/2Mo, 21/4Cr-1Mo) on pH, orifice distance, and material, experiments were carried out. These experiments were performed using a flow velocity of 4 m/sec (partly 9 m/sec) at pH $8.0\~10.0$ in an oxygen-free aqueous solution re-circulated in an Erosion-Corrosion Test Loop at $130^{\circ}\;{\ldots}$ for 500 hours. The weight loss of the carbon steel specimens appeared to be positively dependent on the flow velocity. That of the carbon and low-alloy steel specimens also showed to be distinguishably dependent on the pH. At pH levels of $8.0\~9.5$ it decreased, but increased from 9.5 to 10.0. Utility water chemistry personnel should carefully consider this kind of pH dependency to control the water system pH to mitigate FAC of the piping system material. The weight loss of the specimens located further from the orifice in the distance range of $6.8\~27.2$ mm was shown to be greater, except for 21/4Cr-1Mo, which showed no orifice distance dependency. Low alloy steel specimens exhibited a factor of two times better resistance to FAC than that of the carbon steel. Based on this kind of FAC dependency of the carbon and low-alloy steels on the orifice distance and material, we conclude that it is necessary to alternate the composition of the secondary piping system material of NPPs, using low-alloy steels, such as 21/4Cr-1Mo, particularly when the system piping has to be replaced.

Fuel atomization and mixture formation in an gasoline engine has influence on the engine performance and pollutant emission. The throttle valve installed in an intake system plays a greater role in control of mixture quantity in accordance with engine drive condition. In this study, the characteristics of secondary atomization developed at the downstream of the valves were observed using an image processing method. Two major kinds of valves, solid and perforated ones, are chosen in order to compare the valve performance with the experimental parameters of air flow rate, valve opening angle, and valve shapes. For the perforated valve, we can obtain the relatively small sized droplets, and nearly uniformed and dense distributed sprays with low loss coefficient than for the solid valve.

In this study, an off-design performance analysis procedure is developed based on Two-zone model and TEIS model. In Two-zone model, there are both primary zone and secondary zone for an isentropic core flow and an average of all non-isentropic streamtubes respectively. The level of the core flow diffusion in an impeller is calculated by using TEIS model which regards the impeller as two successive rotating elements in series. At impeller exit, the mixing process occurs with an increase in entropy, that is to say, a decrease in total pressure. In loss models including Two-zone and TEIS model, some empirical parameters have a great influence on overall performance curve. So these parameters' influences on the overall performance curve are investigated and compared with experimental data.

An experimental study is made in a nearly two-dimensional 90.deg. curved duct to investigate the effects of interaction between streamline curvature and mean strain on turbulence. The initial shear at the entrance to the curved duct is varied by an upstream shear generator to produce five different shear conditions ; a uniform flow (UF), a positive weak shear (PW), a positive strong shear(PS), a negative weak shear (NW) and a negative strong shear(NS). With the mean field data of the case UF, variations of the momentum thickness, the shape factor and the skin friction over the convex(inner) surface and the concave (outer) surface are scrutinized quantitatively in-depth. It is found that, while the pressure loss due to curvature is insensitive to the inlet shear rates, the distributions of wall static pressure along both convex and concave surfaces are much influenced by the inlet shear rates.

The heat produced by the fission in the fuel of HANARO, 30 MW research reactor, is transferred from the primary cooling water to the secondary cooling water through heat exchangers, and the heat absorbed by the secondary cooling water is released into the atmosphere by the 33 MW cooling tower which is a mechanical induced draft and counter flow type. If the outlet temperature of cooling tower exceeds 33 of due to the loss of the cooling tower performance under reactor operation above $50\%$ of the full power, the reactor power should be reduced to half of the full power for safe operation. Therefore, the cooling capability of cooling tower should be maintained for the reactor to be normally operated. To predict the capability of cooling tower for full power reactor operation of 30 MW, the performance test of cooling tower was done at the reactor present power of 24 MW and the capability was respectively evaluated by characteristics and performance curves methods in accordance with the Code of Cooling Tower Institute of U.S.A. to confirm the reliability of evaluation. As a result, it was confirmed, through the results of each evaluation, that the cooling capability of cooling tower meets the design required heat load. Also, the equations of the performance and the characteristics curves of the cooling tower, based on the collected data during this performance test, was obtained for developing the calculation program to predict the cooling capability during reactor operation.
Many pressurization systems are designed and built with the goal of providing a smoke-free escape route in the event of a building fire. A secondary objective is to provide a smoke-free staging area for fire fighters. In the present study, a computer program is developed to calculate pressure loss and flow rate at several building elements such as a room, a ]tabby a staircase and an air supply shaft. By the program as the dosing tool for the pressurization system, the capacity of the injection fan is calculated, and the design method is proposed for the optimization of the fan capacity.

The most components and piping of the secondary side of domestic nuclear power plants were manufactured carbon-steel and low-alloy steel. Flow accelerated corrosion leads to wall thinning (metal loss) of carbon steel components and piping exposed to the flowing water or wet steam of high temperature, pressure, and velocity. The feedwater heaters of many nuclear power plants have recently experienced sever wall thinning damage, which increases as operating time progress. Several nuclear power plants in Korea have also experienced wall thinning damage in the shell wall around the impingement baffle. This paper describes the comparisons between the numerical analysis results using the FLUENT code and the experimental results based on down-scaled experimental facility. The experiments were performed based on several types of impingement baffle plates which are installed in low pressure feedwater heater.
