  • Consolidation settlements of soft clay are often large and potentially damaging to the structures. Currently, large-scale construction projects for airport and harbor etc. are in progress in Korea and many of these structures will be constructed on thick and soft clay layers. For this kind of ground condition, evaluation of consolidation settlement is required at every design and construction stages, and the magnitude of secondary compression appears to be larger than expected. Generally, the magnitude of secondary compression is evaluated by laboratory and in-situ consolidation tests or by empirical $C_{a/}$ $C_{c}$, relationship. The use of empirical value $C_{a/}$ $C_{c}$ may be economical, fast and powerful tool in estimating secondary consolidation settlement. However, the databases of the $C_{a/}$ $C_{c}$, for typical soft clays in Korea are insufficient. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship of $C_{a/}$ $C_{c}$ on marine clay near the southern sea in Korea. A series of incremental loading consolidation tests with measurement of pore water pressure were performed. It was found that the $C_{a/}$ $C_{c}$ of undisturbed marine clay is 0.0397. This value is similar to that proposed by Mesri and Castro(1987) on inorganic clay and silt. and silt. and silt.

  • This study aims at scrutinizing the long4errn consolidation characteristics of peats sampled at three different regions of Chonbuk province. The standard consolidation test and the single load consolidation test were performed about these samples and especially in case of the latter the loading period was 350 days. The main condusions analyzed are as follows. 1. Void ratio showed much greater values than that of the general clay and was decresed greatly according to the increase of the load. 2. In case of the relationship between the sefflement and the long-term settlement time the rate of settlement increment became great according to the increase of the load step and the long4erm settlement became linely proportional to the logarithm of time alter 10 minutes. 3. The linear correlation was showed between the long4erm settlement time and the void ratio and therefore equations by regression analysis were derived in order to estimate the long-term settlement The slope of straight lines increased according th the increase of the load step and secondary consolidation coefficients ranged from 0.04-0.27. 4. The secondary consolidation coeffcient became linealy proportional to the compression index and the ratio of Ca to CC was 0.072. 5. The period required in ending the primary consolidation was about 10 minutes and alter that the secondary consolidation coefficient appeared to have constant value. Therefore the secondary consolidation coefficient was judged to be used as a significant factor in estimating the long4erm settlement. 6. In case of the single load consolidation test the secondary consolidation coefficient showed the tendancy increasing according to the increase of the consolidation pressure.

  • In order to integrate two consolidation theories of Terzaghi's consolidation theory and Mesri's secondary compression theory and to identify a model suitable for analyzing stress-strain behavior over time, numerical analysis on consolidation tests were conducted using a modified cam-clay model and a soft soil creep model and the following conclusions were obtained. The results of numerical analysis applying the theory that a linear proportional relationship is established between the void ratio at logarithmic scale and the permeability coefficient at logarithmic scale is better agreement with the result of oedometer test than the results of applying constant hydraulic conductivity. The modified cam-clay model is a model that does not include secondary compression, but the slope of the normal consolidation line corresponding to the compression index of the standard consolidation test includes secondary compression, so the actual settlement curve over time is lower than the predicted value through numerical analysis. It always gets smaller. Other previous studies that applied Terzaghi's consolidation theory to consolidation test analysis showed the same results and were cross-confirmed. The soft soil creep model, which includes secondary compression in the theory, showed good agreement in all sections including secondary compression in the consolidation test results. It was judged appropriate to use a soft soil creep model when performing numerical analysis of soft clay ground.

  • In general, two methods have been used to predict settlement of soft ground. One method is Terzaghi's one dimensional consolidation theory which gives time-settlement relationship using the standard consolidation test results. The other is forecasting method of ground settlement to be occured in the future using in-situ monitoring data. The above both methods have some defects in application manner or in itself especially in very deep and soft clayey ground. In view of the lessons and experiences of soft ground improvement projects, several techniques were proposed for more accurate theorectical calculation of consolidation settlement as follows ; ① Subdivision of soft ground, ② Consideration of secondary compression, ③ Using the modified compression index, etc. And also, revised hyperbolic fitting method was suggested to minimize the error of predicted future settlement. In addition, revised De-Beer equation of immediate settlement of loose sandy soil was proposed to overcome the tendency to show too small settlement calculation results by original De-Deer equation. And also, considering the various effects of settlement delay in the improved ground by vertical drains, time-settlement caculation equation(Onoue method) was revised to match the tendency of settlement delay by using the characteristics of discharge capacity decreases of vertical drain with time elapse by the pattern of hyperbolic equation.

  • Tianjin, which is located on the west shore of the Bohai Sea, is part of China's Circum-Bohai-Sea Region, where very weak clay is deposited. From the 1970s to the early $21^{st}$ century, Tianjin marine clay deposits have been the subject of numerous geotechnical investigations. Because of these deposits' geological complexity, great depositional thickness, high water content, large void ratio, excessive settlement, and low shear strength, the geotechnical properties of Tianjin marine clay need to be summarized and evaluated based on various in situ and laboratory tests so that Tianjin can safely and economically sustain more infrastructure in the coming decades. In this study, the properties of Tianjin marine clay, especially its consolidation properties, are summarized, evaluated and discussed. The focus is on establishing correlations between the geotechnical property indexes and mechanical parameters of Tianjin marine clay. These correlations include the correlations between the water content and the void ratio, the depth and the undrained shear strength, the liquid limit and the compression index, the tip resistance and the constrained modulus, the plasticity index and the ratio of undrained shear strength and the preconsolidation pressure. In addition, the primary consolidation properties of Tianjin marine clay, such as the intrinsic compression line (ICL), sedimentation compression line (SCL), compression index, $C_c$, coefficient of consolidation, $C_v$, and hydraulic conductivity change index, $C_{kv}$, are evaluated and discussed. A secondary consolidation property, i.e., the secondary compression index, $C_a$, is also investigated, and the results show that the ratio of $C_a/C_c$ for Tianjin marine clay can be used to calculate $C_a$ in secondary consolidation settlement predictions.

  • It has been a growing concern how to use Nanji-Island landfill and other refuse landfills located around metropolitan areas. In this paper, settlement characteristics of Nanji -Island landfill were studied by analyzing the data collected over the period of two years. The settlement characteristics were similar to the analyzed settlement characteristics of 24 refuse landfills in the United States. The model proposed by Bjarngard and Edger(1990) model is considered to be suitable for the long-term prediction of Wnil -Island landfill. The ten-year -period prediction value of Bjarngard and Edger (1990) model is considerably different from that of Power Creep Model. If existing settlement models used for long-term prediction of the settlement characteristics of landfill are not analyzed thoroughly there remains the possibility of including considerable prediction errors.

  • The accurate evaluation of settlement is important to every steps in the constructions involving soft soils. Relating with those constructions, especially, it has been emphasized recently that the influnce of secondary settlement is important. The ratio of $C_a/C_c$ and the surcharging tests can be applied collaboratively to predicting and reducing secondary consolidation. A series of incremental loading consolidation test and surcharging tests for undisturbed samples of Kunsan clay were performed in this study. As a result of the tests, the ratio of $C_a/C_c$ for the clay was found to be 0.0329. Also, the relationship between void ratio and $t/t_p$ was shown to be linear. Accordingly, the secondary compression index, $C_a for a long term loading had a constant value regardless of time. When the total surcharge ratio was 0.4 and the dissipation ratio of excessive porewater pressure was in the range from 80% to 100%, secondary settlement was effectively reduced for Kunsan clay.

  • GS E&C was awarded the contract for the construction of Hanoi - Hai Phong Expressway Package EX-7 from Station Km 72+000 to Station Km 81+300 in December 2008. This project is the $7^{th}$ contract package of the 105.5 km long expressway near Hai Phong city, which includes a FCM-styled bridge along with high embankments over soft ground. For these high embankments, there is a need to treat the soft soil for improving the overall stability during construction and for reducing the post-construction settlement of the expressway. The Designer of this project had adopted four (4) different types of ground improvement techniques to treat the soft ground, including the prefabricated vertical drains (PVD), sand drains (SD), pack drains (PD, or sometimes called packed sand drains), and sand compaction piles (SCP). The main focus of soft soil treatment should be paid attention to the residual settlement after construction. In current design, however, it appeared that the secondary compression (or creep) of the improved soil layer and the consolidation settlement of the lower untreated compressible soil layer have been neglected in the estimation of the post-construction settlement. These uncalculated residual settlements may not only unsatisfy the design criteria but also raise serious problems during service period of this expressway. In this paper, the subsoil condition and current design were reviewed focusing on the employed soft soil treatment method and expected residual settlement.
