  • The pressure distribution between human body and seat surface has been considered as an important factor affecting seating comfort. However, it is rare to find general guidelines of how to analyze these pressure patterms related to the seating comfort. In order to investigate the relationship between the pressure patterns and the subjective feeling of seating comfort, a high-resolution body pressure measurement system was adopted. The measured patterns showed that the clear distinctions between the comfortable seats. It was also possible to estimate the seating comfort based upon the analysis of the pressure patterns. The further research will be focused on finding out the relationship between physical seat design parameters and the seating discomfort.

  • A window increases the lighting quality of a space by allowing daylight into the space, and maintains visual contact with the outside. Moreover, the window with a preferred view provides many benefits such as psychological satisfaction, occupants' health and improved environmental quality. This study aimed to investigate how view elements and window luminance influence occupants' seating preference in a living room. The experiment was carried out in a mock-up model with thirty-two subjects (17 men and 15 women). The nine seating positions in a living room have different view such as natural view (trees or sky) and man-made view (paving and roof top). Subjects were asked to select a position in the room where they felt most visual comfort. Simultaneously Photolux 2.1 software was used to analyze the window luminance. The experiment results indicated that subjects prefer to be seated near a window and feel comfort in a seating overlooking the trees and sky. This would indicate that the natural elements of the view and a distance to the window affect seating preference to the occupants.

  • This research is on a seating posture happening at a chair in a cinema and looked into various changes in a posture through the analysis of bodily movement in a established space like a cinema. Through the behavioral analysis of a seating posture in a limited space, each behavioral characteristic shown by a male and female and interdependent relations with a limited space were grasped. The conclusion through the above research work was as follows: 1) This research suggested a frame of analysis by dividing a seating posture into the side and upper part and was able to analyze its subsequent change characteristic of a seating posture by a male and female. 2) As for the side posture, a male was found to change fewer postures than a female, but as for the upper posture, there appeared a high frequency in posture change in case of a female. 3) As for time of staying in the side posture, a female was found to keep up a specific posture, and relatively a male changes his postures frequently while appreciating a movie; likely, as for the upper posture, it was found out that there existed a difference between the preference for the upper posture and time to keep it up. 4) A male and female were establishing a comfortable environment through their change in a posture, and there appeared changes in a posture the most within every 10 minutes in both the side and upper part postures. 5) As for the correlation between a initial posture and keep-up posture, it was found that a male tend to pursue a comfortable posture as time goes by, while a female kept up a comfortable one from her initial seating posture.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of custom seating system on upper extremity access to mouse for a child with cerebral palsy. A single-subject ABAB design was used with one 13years old participant. The measurements were response time and accuracy of mouse click in the participant's typical position and in an intervention position. The intervention position was taken by using current clinical guideline and research on promoting upper extremity movement. The intervention position was achieved through hands-on postural support to the participant's typical seating. The results of this study were as follow: first, response time was decreased in the intervention position compared with the typical seating. Second, accuracy of mouse click was highly in every phases. So further analyses were not conducted on these data. The results of this study provide empirical evidence of the positive effects of functional seating on access to mouse for children with cerebral palsy. Further research is required to confirm the positive effect of the custom seating system across other disabilities type and more subjects.

  • Drivers' sitting strategies are considered in car seat design. Existing research has identified representative sitting strategies by visual inspection of seating pressure measurements collected from a small sample size of drivers. The present study recruited 20 female and 20 male participants, measured seating pressure, and classified sitting strategies by cluster analysis. The participants' sitting postures were classified based on seating pressure distribution into mid-back and scapular, mid-back and lumbar, and lumbar sitting strategies for the upper body and hip concentrated, hip and mid-thigh concentrated, and hip and mid-thigh distributed sitting strategies for the lower body. The effects of gender and occupant package layout (OPL) on sitting strategy were nout found significant. The identified sitting strategies would be of use for the design and evaluation of an OPL and a seat.

  • Human characteristic responding to idle vibration on passenger vehicle was studied to find if affected by seating posture of passenger. When twelve male subjects are exposed to moderate vertical vibration of 0.224 $m/s^2$ r.m.s. at frequency range from 3 Hz to 40 Hz, it was found that seating posture significantly affects to biodynamical characteristics, apparent mass and apparent eccentric mass, at most range of idle vibration frequency(20~40 Hz). The supported thigh contact on rigid seat showed bigger values in the two biodynamical characteristics than the average thigh contact. The bigger apparent mass and apparent eccentric mass in the seating posture of the supported thigh contact can be assumed more strengthened muscle at the frequency range.

  • Due to the recent Law on facilities Improvement in public performance facilities, equal access to the need of cultural satisfaction and the standards of facilities for people with disabilities are to be assessed. The aim of this study was to determine how to improve the facilities for disabled individuals and provide complementary guidelines for amenities designed for people with disabilities based on a comparative analysis of the disability codes in Korea, Japan, USA, Australia and Canada as well as a field observation. The results suggest the need for improved guidelines in terms of accessibility and accessible seating, which are summarized as follows: (1) The facility standards need to be complemented and clarified in terms of a detailed description, (2) regarding facilities for accessible seating, fall prevention handrails should be lowered to a height within the range of vision of the individual (3) The purpose and user's manual for theater and cultural facilities as well as detailed dimensional requirements need to be restated, and (4) an improvement in accessible seating in theaters and cultural facilities is needed. The purpose of the this study is to show an arrangement of a fundamental judgement and a ground data which can be complemented in planning a public performance facilities for the people with disabilities.

  • The improvement of automotive seating system, particularly for the driver, has been the subject of intense interest. In this study, the methods for evaluating the seating comfort are investigated. A subjective evaluation has been the general method for evaluating the seating comfort of automotive seat. Therefore, the survey using the roadside interview is conducted. In addition, the subjective evaluation with a questionnaire using the laboratory set-up is investigated. With this subjective evaluation, in order to evaluate the comfort objectively, the body pressure distribution, seat physical characteristics and eletromygram are investigated. These objective evaluation methods are compared with the subjective evaluation. As a result, the body pressure distribution, seat physical characteristics and electromyogram are recommended as the objective technique for the seating comfort evaluation.

  • This study was conducted for the purpose of evaluating the impressions gained by the members of the audience who have seen contents in a dome theater, based on their seating positions. Dome Theater Gaia provided the environment where the contents for evaluation were to be presented, and enquete (survey) was used as the investigative method. The survey results showed that the presentation of wide-viewing-angle three-dimensional (3D) contents proved effective in enhancing the 3D effect and the presence in a dome theater. Moreover, the study results confirmed that in relation to the impression evaluation of the contents for different seating positions, the optimal seating position varied according to the presentation method of the 3D and 2D contents.
