Abundances of small fishes that utilized seagrass meadows of Redfish Bay, Texas, were analyzed quantitatively to determine monthly changes of this concentrated subtropical fish community during 1982-1983. an effective quantitative sampler, a 1-㎡ thrown cage, yielded a total of 10,223 fishes that comprised 40 species in 23 families, with average total densities about 15 fishes/㎡ in shoalgrass meadow and 6 fishes/㎡ in turtlegrass meadow. The darter goby, pinfish, code goby, and Gulf pipefish were the four most abundant species, and accounted for approximately 85% of the number of fish collected. However, the two different meadows had different relative abundances of fishes. The darter goby numerically dominated shallower shoalgrass meadow, while the pinfish and code goby were the commonest fishes in deeper turtlegrass meadow. Seasonal changes in both species composition and abundances of fish populations were major characteristics in these subtropical seagrass medows. Peak abundance of total fishes occurred during spring, with a secondary peak in fall. Lowest abundance of total fishes occurred in winter. Each abundant species showed its own seasonal abundance pattern, and had a peak abundance 1-3 months separated from other species, with some overlap of increased larval recruitment. Such distinct seasonal abundance patterns with different times of peak recruitment. Such distinct seasonal abundance patterns with different times of peak recruitment among fish species seem to permit use of the seagrass habitats with reduced, seasonal competition.

In this study, spatial and temporal patterns and changes in seasonal multi-day cumulative extreme precipitation events defined by maximum 1~5 days cumulative extreme precipitation observed at 61 weather stations in the Republic of Korea for the recent 40 years(1973~2012) are examined. It is demonstrated that the magnitude of multi-day cumulative extreme precipitation events is greatest in summer, while their sensitivity relative to the variations of seasonal total precipitation is greatest in fall. According to analyses of linear trends in the time series data, the most noticeable increases in the magnitude of multi-day cumulative extreme precipitation events are observable in summer with coherences amongst 1~5 days cumulative extreme precipitation events. In particular, the regions with significant increases include Gyeonggi province, western Gangwon province and Chungcheong province, and as the period for the accumulation of extreme precipitation increases from 1 day to 5 days, the regions with significantly-increasing trends are extended to the Sobaek mountain ridge. It is notable that at several scattered stations, the increases of 1~2 days cumulative extreme precipitation events are observed even in winter. It is also observed that most distinct increasing tendency of the ratio of these multi-day cumulative extreme precipitation to seasonal total precipitation appears in winter. These results indicate that proactive actions are needed for spatial and temporal changes in not only summer but also other seasonal multi-day cumulative extreme precipitation events in Korea.
A comprehensive, nonsteady state, computer simulation program for the environmental conditions in advancing tunnels (the HEADSIM simulation program) is constructed and successfully validated with heat balance amongst all heat sources, and with mass conservation amongst various airflows including the leakage air from ducts, under timedependent variations of inlet air conditions. which include sudden, diurnal and seasonal changes. Heat conduction in the wall strata and face strata is simulated with most complicated boundary conditions using the finite difference method, and the climatic conditions in roadway sections which contain air ducts, booster fan, spray cooler, compressed air pipes, cold water pipes, return water pipes, machinery and broken rock are simulated taking into account the variations of face operation and the heat storage mechanism in the strata. The limitations of simulation time steps and roadway section lengths are defined according to the stability criteria satisfying the principles of thermodynamics. Variations of heat transfer coefficients, which are newly set, and those of wetness factors are taken into account according to the variations of other parameters and the stepwise advance of the face. Newly-derived formulae are used for computing the air duct leakage and the pressure inside of the duct. A new concept of an 'imaginary duct' is introduced to simulate the climatic conditions in tunnels during holiday periods, which directly affect conditions on subsequent working days under the consideration of natural convection. A subsidiary program (the WALLSIM simulation program) is made to compute the dimensionless tunnel surface temperatures and to compare the results with those from analytical approaches, and to demonstrate the stability, convergence and accuracy of the strata heat conduction simulation, adopting the finite difference method. The WALLSIM also has wide applications, including those for the computation of age coefficients.
Monthly variations of phytoplankton communities were conducted to the investigation at five stations in mid and lower parts of the Nakdong River from December 1995 to November 1996. The phytoplankton communities were identified a total 456taxa which were composed of 136 genera, 427 species, 27 varieties and 2 forma. The standing crops of phytoplankton communities ranged from 2.7 to 52.8 (${\times}$10³)cells·ml$^{-1}$ during the investigation periods. Bacillariophyceae was the dominant classes at all stations. The dominant species were 7taxa and the standing crops of these ranged from 18.3 to 95.1% of the standing crops of phytoplankton communities. The dominant species in the mid parts (st. 1, 2) of this river system were benthic species such as Navicula gregaria, N. viridula var. rostellata and Nitzschia palea, however it was planktonic species (Stephan discus hantzschii, Golenkinia radiata) and meroplanktonic species (Aulacoseira ambigua, A. granulata) in the lower parts (st. 3, 4, 5). The seasonal variations of the dominant species in the lower parts were appeared to the planktonic species (S. hantzschii) from winter to spring, and were the meroplanktonic species (A. ambigua and A. granulata) in from summer to fall. The lower parts of the Nakdong river were entropic states because the dominant species were composed A. ambigua, A. granulate and S. hantzschii which were indicators of entropic water quality. The interrelationships between total standing crops and environmental factors(water temperature, pH, NH$_4$, NO$_2$, NO$_3$ and PO$_4$) were low positive or negative coefficients. S. hantzschii had low positive or negative relations with water temperature, NH$_4$, NO$_2$, NO$_3$ and PO$_4$. As the result, the variations of standing crops of phytoplankton were not caused by a single factor but controlled by the complex factors.
We examined shrimp and bycatch species composition in the shrimp beam trawl fishery off Wan-do, Korea(in the major or fishing ground)from December 2004 to November 2005. We observed a total of 103, 072 individuals in 96 taxa. By densities of individuals, 96.97% were shrimps, 1.20% decapods, 1.10% fish, 0.30% cephalopods and 0.43% other species. By catch weight, 57.29% were shrimps, 26.33% fish, 6.82% decapods, 4.64% cephalopods and 4.92% other species. In spring, the dominant bycatch species by biomass were Okamejei kenojei, Lophiomus setigerus, and Charybdis bimaculata. In summer, the dominant species were Charybdis bimaculata, Muraenesox cinereus, and Paralichlhys olivaceus. In autumn, dominants were Okamejei kenojei, Conger myriasler, and Sefipinna tenuifilis, and in winter they were Okamjei kenojei, Chaeturichthys stigmatias, and Sillago japonica. Bycatch species composition and individual species abundances differed significantly among seasons, probably indicating that variations were related to the life history characteristics of bycatch species. The diversity index was highest in October (2.797) and lowest in July (1.012). The July dominance index (0.569) was much higher than in other months; evenness was highest in September (0.856) and lowest in July (0.374). During the study period, the bycatch-to-shrimp ratio of this fishery varied from 0.063 in February 2005 to 11.031 in May 2005, with a mean of 3.363 These temporal variations may be linked 10 variations in reproductive behaviors and migration patterns of the marine animals sampled.
Temporal and spatial variations of precipitation in South Korea are investigated using 60 observation data of the recent 30-years from 1976 to 2005. The area averaged annual precipitation amount is about 1310 mm and shows a strong spatial variation, maximum at the southern and Kyoungki province (>1300 mm) and minimum at the Kyungpook province(<1100 mm). The precipitation days show a strong spatial variation with maximum at the Sobaik mountain region(>100 days) and minimum at the Kyungpook province (<90 days). The interannual variations (IAV) of precipitation amount and days are more significant at the southern and eastern part of Sobaik and Taebaik mountain, and along the Sobaik mountain, respectively. So, the difference of annual precipitation amount reaches to about 800mm between wet and dry years at the southern part of Korean peninsula. Whereas, the IAV of precipitation intensity is strong at the southern and middle part of South Korea with a minimum between two maxima. Also, seasonal variations are closely linked with the geographic environments (elevation, distance from ocean, location relative to the Taebaik mountain). Therefore, maximum and minimum of seasonal variations of precipitation are occurred at the northern inland region (ratio of summer to the annual precipitation (RSAP) is greater than 60%), eastern and southern coastal regions (RSAP is less than 53%),respectively. And the RSAP is slightly increased from 50% to 55% comparing the Ho and Kang (1988). The consistent and strong positive relation between the heavy rainfalls, the ratio of heavy rainfalls to annual precipitation and the annual precipitation indicates that heavy rainfall is more frequent and strong at the maximum annual precipitation region.
Seasonal variations of the contents of some chemical constituents of the estuary water at two definite stations of the laver bed in Nack Dong River have been determined over one tidal cycle in spring tide from Nov. 1962 to Oct. 1963. The ranges of annual variations of the contents at station 1 and station 2 are as follows: water temp. $2.2-30.8^{\circ}C$, $3.3-28.0^{\circ}C$; pH 7.8-8.5, 7.9-8.4; chlorosity 0.025-19.66 g/l, 4.31-19.56 g/l; magnesium 0.00355-1.565 g/l, -1.524 g/l; calcium 0.00557-0.482 g/l, - -0.590 g/l; saturation % of dissolved oxygen 71.8-123.2%, 88.2-113.8%; silicate-Si 8.00-125.5 ${\mu}$g-at./l, 6.70-100.5 ${\mu}$g-at./l; phosphate-P 0.12-1.47 ${\mu}$g-at./l, 0.11-1.09 ${\mu}$g-at./l; ammonia-N 4.88-25.45 ${\mu}$g-at./l, 4.12-17.58 ${\mu}$g-at./l; nitrite-N 0.07-0.75 ${\mu}$g-at./l, 0.08-0.58 ${\mu}$g-at./l; nitrate-N 2.11-6.89 ${\mu}$g-at./l, 1.85-7.43 ${\mu}$g-at./l each. The annual tidal variations of the constituents at station 1 are more remarkable than of station 2. The chlorosity, magnesium and calcium contents are decreased nearing the slack after ebb, and increased abruptly then one hour after the slack. The contents of the other constituents are varied according to the chlorosity variety. The values of pH, chlorosity, magnesium and calcium contents are lower in summer than winter, while the difference of seasonal variations of the % saturation of dissolved oxygen is not remarkable. The phosphate-P and total nitrogen contents have a tendency of increasing within a definite range, while the silicate-Si increase proportionally, to the increasing of mixing percentage of fresh water. The average values of Si/P and N/P are several times greater than of the normal in sea water. The chemical composition considered from the value of Mg/Cl or Ca/Cl of estuarine water varies according to the variety of chlorosity, even at the high chlorosity of 19 g/l.

The solar annual (Sa) and semiannual (Ssa) tides account for much of the non-uniform annual and seasonal variability observed in sea levels. These non-equilibrium tides depend on atmospheric variations, forced by changes in the Sun's distance and declination, as well as on hydrographic conditions. Here we employ tidal harmonic analyses to calculate Sa and Ssa harmonic constants for 21 Korean coastal tidal stations (TS), operated by the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency. We used 19 year-long (1999 to 2017) 1 hr-interval sea level records from each site, and used two conventional harmonic analysis (HA) programs (Task2K and UTide). The stability of Sa harmonic constants was estimated with respect to starting date and record length of the data, and we examined the spatial distribution of the calculated Sa and Ssa harmonic constants. HA was performed on Incheon TS (ITS) records using 369-day subsets; the first start date was January 1, 1999, the subsequent data subset starting 24 hours later, and so on up until the final start date was December 27, 2017. Variations in the Sa constants produced by the two HA packages had similar magnitudes and start date sensitivity. Results from the two HA packages had a large difference in phase lag (about 78°) but relatively small amplitude (<1 cm) difference. The phase lag difference occurred in large part since Task2K excludes the perihelion astronomical variable. Sensitivity of the ITS Sa constants to data record length (i.e., 1, 2, 3, 5, 9, and 19 years) was also tested to determine the data length needed to yield stable Sa results. HA results revealed that 5 to 9 year sea level records could estimate Sa harmonic constants with relatively small error, while the best results are produced using 19 year-long records. As noted earlier, Sa amplitudes vary with regional hydrographic and atmospheric conditions. Sa amplitudes at the twenty one TS ranged from 15.0 to 18.6 cm, 10.7 to 17.5 cm, and 10.5 to 13.0 cm, along the west coast, south coast including Jejudo, and east coast including Ulleungdo, respectively. Except at Ulleungdo, it was found that the Ssa constituent contributes to produce asymmetric seasonal sea level variation and it delays (hastens) the highest (lowest) sea levels. Comparisons between monthly mean, air-pressure adjusted, and steric sea level variations revealed that year-to-year and asymmetric seasonal variations in sea levels were largely produced by steric sea level variation and inverted barometer effect.

In this study, we investigated the concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in the ambient air of a small scale municipal waste landfill site. Seasonal sampling was carried out simultaneously at two sites, i.e. one in the center of the landfill area, and the other at a boundary site. Among 38 target VOC, toluene appeared to be the most dominant compound, followed by benzene. and xylenes. The higher levels of BTX imply that paint -containing materials and/or organic solvents are the most significant sources of the VOC in the landfill environment. Seasonal variations for the samples collected at the landfill site indicated that the VOC concentrations tend to be higher in the spring and fall season and lower in the winter season. In addition, night- time concentrations appeared to be generally higher than day-time. Such daily variation might be due to more stabilized atmosphere during the night-time. Similar patterns were also found in samples collected at a boundary site. This study demonstrated that the municipal landfill, although it is small -scaled, could be an important emission source of atmospheric VOC, particularly in the vicinities of the landfill. Thus, an appropriate control strategy is required to prevent any undesirable secondary pollutions from the environmental sanitary facilities such as landfill.
The seasonal variations of the marine algal community were detected with quadrat method during May, 1974-May, 1975 at several stations in the Kwang Yang Bay. Considering the environmental factors such as salinity and water current, etc., and algal vegetation, the Bay was divided into 3 sections; Section I-Myodo and the adjacent area; Section II-Eomnamuseom and the adjacent area; Section III-inlet of the Bay from Odongdo, Yeosu. The dominant species, shown by 5-grades coverage and bimonthly investigations, appear in the order of Sargassum thunbergii(Jan.)>Chondria crassicaulis (Mar.)>Ulva pertusa(May)>U. pertusa (July)>U. pertusa and Gigartina intermedia(Sept.)> Sarg. thunbergii and Gelidium pusillum (Nov.) in Section I, and Sargassum thunbergii(Jan.)>Ulva pertusa and Hizikia fusiforme (Mar.)>U. pertusa and Sarg. thunbergii(May)>Chondria crassicaulis (Sept.)>Ch. crassicaulis (Nov.) in Section II. The members such as Srgassum thunbergii, Gelidium pusillum, G. divaricatum, Hizikia fusiforme, Carpopeltis affinis, and Chondria crassicaulis show the most luxuriant period of growth in winter (Nov.-Mar.), while Ulva pertusa shows the period in May. However, considering the dry weight of total vegetation, the most luxuriant period apperas in May and the poorest one in July. The total dry weight of the vegetation in Section II is about 3.2 times more than the one in Section I.
