  • An optical flow-based motion estimation algorithm is proposed for video coding. The algorithm uses block-matching motion estimation with an adaptive search region. The search region is computed from motion fields that are estimated based on the optical flow. The algorithm is based on the fact that true block-motion vectors have similar characteristics to optical flow vectors. Thereafter, the search region is computed using these optical flow vectors that include spatial relationships. In conventional block matching, the search region is fixed. In contrast, in the new method, the appropriate size and location of the search region are both decided by the proposed algorithm. The results obtained using test images show that the proposed algorithm can produce a significant improvement compared with previous block-matching algorithms.

  • One of the important parts of the in-core fuel management is loading pattern optimization (LPO). The loading pattern optimization as a reasonable design of the in-core fuel management can improve both economic and safe aspects of the nuclear reactor. This work proposes the hybrid of fuzzy logic controller with harmony search algorithm (HS) for loading pattern optimization in a pressurized water reactor. The music improvisation process to find a pleasing harmony is inspiring the harmony search algorithm. In this work, the adjustment of the harmony search algorithm parameters such as the bandwidth and the pitch adjustment rate are increasing performance of the proposed algorithm which is done through a fuzzy logic controller. Hence, membership functions and fuzzy rules are designed to improve the performance of the HS algorithm and achieve optimal results. The objective of the method is finding an optimum core arrangement according to safety and economic aspects such as reduction of power peaking factor (PPF) and increase of effective multiplication factor (Keff). The proposed approach effectiveness has been tried in two cases, Michalewicz's bivariate function problem and NEACRP LWR core. The results show that by using fuzzy harmony search algorithm the value of the fitness function is improved by 15.35%. Finally, with regard to the new solutions proposed in this research it could be used as a trustworthy method for other optimization issues of engineering field.

  • The effectiveness of coupling with a bolted rim is assessed in this research using a newly designed optimization algorithm. The current study, which is provided here, evaluates 10 contemporary metaheuristic approaches for enhancing the coupling with bolted rim design problem. The algorithms used are particle swarm optimization (PSO), crow search algorithm (CSA), enhanced honeybee mating optimization (EHBMO), Harmony search algorithm (HSA), Krill heard algorithm (KHA), Pattern search algorithm (PSA), Charged system search algorithm (CSSA), Salp swarm algorithm (SSA), Big bang big crunch optimization (B-BBBCO), Gradient based Algorithm (GBA). The contribution of the paper isto optimize the coupling with bolted rim problem by comparing these 10 algorithms and to find which algorithm gives the best optimized result. These algorithm's performance is evaluated statistically and subjectively.

  • Based on the studies on the motion vector distributions estimated on the image sequences, we proposed constrained diamond search (DS) algorithm for fast block-matching motion estimation. By considering the fact that motion vectors are searched within the 2 pixels distance in vertically and horizontally on average, we confirmed that DS algorithm achieves close performance on error ratio and requires less computation compared with new three-step search (NTSS) algorithm. Also, by applying displaced frame difference (DFD) to DS algorithm, we reduced the computational loads needed to estimate the motion vectors within the stable block that do not have motions. And we reduced the possibilities falling into the local minima in the course of estimation of motion vectors by applying DFD to DS algorithm. So, we knew that proposed constrained DS algorithm achieved enhanced results as aspects of error ratio and the number of search points to be necessary compared with conventional DS algorithm, four step search (FSS) algorithm, and block-based gradient-descent search algorithm

  • This paper proposes a new quickly convergent pattern search quasi-Newton algorithm that employs the multi-step version of the Symmetric Rank One (SRI). The new algorithm works on the factorizations of the inverse Hessian approximations to make available a sequence of convergent positive bases required by the pattern search process. The algorithm, in principle, resembles that developed in [1] with multi-step methods dominating the dervation and with numerical improvements incurred, as shown by the numerical results presented herein.

  • The fiber optic communication technology is considered as a key solution for the future communication. However the assembly of the fiber optic components highly depends on manual or semi-automated alignment process. And the light search algorithm is recognized an important factor to reduce the manufacturing process time. Therefore this paper investigates optimal search algorithm for the automatic alignment of fiber optic components. The experiments show the effectiveness of Hill Climbing Search, Adaptive Hill Climbing Search and Steepest Search algorithms, in a view of process time.

  • This paper presents a fast block-matching algorithm to improve the conventional Three-Step Search (TSS) based method. The proposed Comparison Fast Block Matching Algorithm (CFBMA) begins with DAB for adaptive search range to choose searching method, and searches a part of search window that has high possibility of motion vector like other partial search algorithms. The CFBMA also considers the opposite direction to reduce local minimum, which is ignored in almost conventional based partial search algorithms. CFBMA uses the summation half-stop technique to reduce the computational load. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves the high computational complexity compression effect and very close or better image quality compared with TSS, SES, NTSS based partial search algorithms.

  • In order to solve a complex optimization problem more efficiently than traditional approaches, various meta-heuristic algorithms such as genetic algorithm, ant-colony algorithm, and harmony search algorithm have been extensively researched. Compared with other meta-heuristic algorithm, harmony search algorithm shows a better result to resolve the complex optimization issues. Harmony search algorithm is inspired by the improvision process of musician for most suitable harmony. In general, the performance of harmony search algorithm is determined by the value of harmony memory considering rate, and pitch adjust rate. In this paper, modified harmony search algorithm is proposed in order to derive best harmony. If the optimal solution of a specific problem can not be found for a certain period of time, a part of original harmony memory is updated as the selected suitable harmonies. Experimental results using test function demonstrate that the updated harmony memory can induce the approximation of reliable optimal solution in the short iteration, because of a few change of fitness.

  • In this paper, we propose an optimization algorithm that maximizes the network lifetime in wireless ad-hoc networks using the broadcast transmission method. The optimization algorithm proposed in this paper applies tabu search algorithm, a metaheuristic method that improves the local search method using the memory structure. The proposed tabu search algorithm proposes efficient encoding and neighborhood search method to the network lifetime maximization problem. By applying the proposed method to design efficient broadcast routing, we maximize the lifetime of the entire network. The proposed tabu search algorithm was evaluated in terms of the energy consumption of all nodes in the broadcast transmission occurring in the network, the time of the first lost node, and the algorithm execution time. From the performance evaluation results under various conditions, it was confirmed that the proposed tabu search algorithm was superior to the previously proposed metaheuristic algorithm.

  • The design of efficient search path to maximize the Cumulative Detection Probability(CDP) is mainly dependent on experience and intuition when searcher detect the target using SONAR in the ocean. Recently with the advance of modeling and simulation method, it has been possible to access the optimization problems more systematically. In this paper, a method for the optimal search path calculation is developed based on the combination of the genetic algorithm and the calculation algorithm for detection range. We consider the discrete system for search path, space, and time, and use the movement direction of the SONAR for the gene of the genetic algorithm. The developed algorithm, OASPP(Optimal Acoustic Search Path Planning), is shown to be effective, via a simulation, finding the optimal search path for the case when the intuitive solution exists. Also, OASPP is compared with other algorithms for the measure of efficiency to maximize CDP.
