This research is focusing on the added resistance and seakeeping ability of the designed passenger ship with gooseneck bulb(Designed hull) which provide the improvement of resistance performance under calm water condition. By comparing the added resistances and seakeeping abilities of the reference hull and the designed hull form with gooseneck bulb, it is confirmed that there is little difference in the operational comfort and the reduction of ship speed. As a result, the applied gooseneck bulb in this study is verified for the applicability to medium-sized passenger ships with a good resistance performance.
From a ship's safe operation point of view, it is very important to estimate the navigational safety in a seaway. The seakeeping performance can be defined as the ability of a ship to go to sea, and to accomplish its missions successfully and safely even in adverse environmental conditions. There are several factors presently adopted for evaluating seakeeping performance. But a hardware of the system considering all these factors has not been developed since some of them can not be measured by sensors. In this paper, a synthetic method of evaluating navigational safety is developed by measuring the vertical and lateral acceleration. An experiment by using real measuring carried out on board the T/S 'HANNARA' The equipment was measured every 4 hours for more than 30 minutes the acceleration by accelerometer, analyzed its acceleration values and calculated navigational dangerousness. As the results of this on board experiment, the system is carried conviction to be useful as evaluating seakeeping performance.
The seakeeping performance can be defined as the ability of a ship to go to sea, and successfully and safely execute its missions even in adverse environmental conditions. From the viewpoint of safe operation, it is primarily important to estimate the seakeeping performance of a ship in a seaway. A method of evaluating navigational safety is presented by means of the integrated seakeeping performance index(ISPI) by measuring only vertical acceleration. Judgement of dangerousness is carried out for two types of naval vessels in applying the involuntary speed losses. The used models for computer simulation are Lpp 175m light aircraft carrier and Lpp 93m frigate. In developing the practical evaluation system of navigational safety, it is expected to be useful to solve the difficulties in measuring factors by sensors. The results are also useful for developing the optimum type of naval vessels by applying at the initial design phase.
This paper describes the powering, seakeeping and maneuvering performances for a 2,500-ton class trimaran. Influence of the side-hull forms and location of those in longitudinal and transverse direction to resistance performance was systematically investigated by a series of model tests and numerical calculations. It was found that the longitudinal location of side-hulls was the most influential design parameter to the resistance performance of the trimaran and the optimum location of side-hull depends on ship speeds. When the side-hull stem is located near the primary wave hollow generated by the main hull, the trimaran shows the best resistance performance. Powering performance of the trimaran is superior to those of similar mono-hull ships. Seakeeping model tests for the trimaran were executed and the results were compared with the theoretical results of a similar mono-hull ship. Generally speaking, seakeeping performance of the trimaran is superior to that of a mono-hull ship. In particular, pitching and rolling performance of the trimaran is excellent, which is due to the increased length and breadth. Maneuvering model tests using a HPMM equipment were executed to evaluate the maneuvering performance of the trimaran. Maneuvering simulation was performed using the maneuvering coefficients from the model tests. The results show that the control ability of heading angle and the direction keeping stability of the trimaran is excellent, even though the turning performance is rather worse compared to those of a similar mono-hull ship.
The Safe Operating Envelope (SOE) combined with Short-Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) performance is an essential consideration of a light aircraft carrier for design of hull shape with excellent seakeeping performance in terms of naval air operations as well as traditional naval ship missions such as Transit and Patrol (TAP), and Replenishment at Sea (RAS) and so on. A variety of procedures are systematically combined to determine SOE considering rather complicated missions associated with operation of aircraft onboard. The evaluation of take-off and landing safety missions onboard should consider wind effect on deck and severer seakeeping indices and standards compared with conventional naval ships. In order to support take-off and landing missions, various support activities of the crews are required. So, additional evaluation is needed for indicators such as MSI(Motion sickness Index) and MII(Motion Induced Interruptions), which are quantitative indicators of work ability that appear as a result of motion response. In this study, a standard procedure is developed including the seaworthiness performance indicators, standards, and evaluation procedures that should be considered during design of STOVL aircraft carrier. Analysis results are discussed in terns of air-wake on deck as well as seakeeping indices associated with design parameter changes in view of conceptual design of a light aircraft carrier.
One of the most important missons that are imposed on merchant ship at sea is to accomplish the safe transportation of cargo loaded. Recently, a study on the seakeeping performance has been carried out on the development of evaluation system related to the synthetic safety of a ship at sea. The seakeeping performance is the ship's ability sailing at, and executing its misson against adverse environmental factors successfully and safely. Until now, however, there has not been any method of quantitative evaluation on the dynamic safety of the ship's cargo loaded. In this regards, this paper has introduced the evaluation method of dynamic safety of the ship's cargo. In order to evaluate the dynamic safety of cargo, the vertical and lateral acceleration which causes the collapse, racking and local structure failure of cargo was adopted as the evaluation factors in the ship's motions. The response amplitude of ship's motions in regular waves is manipulated by NSM (New Strip Method) on a given 2,700 TEU full container vessel under the wind forces of 7, 8 and 9 Beaufort scale. Each response of ship's motions induced by NSM was applied to short-crested irregular waves for stochastic process on evaluation factors and then vertical and lateral acceleration of each cargo was compared with significant amplitude of each acceleration. A representative dangerous factor was determined by comparing permissible values of stacking and racking forces occurred typically to the vertical and transverse directions with the container strength required on ISO 1496 at the positions of forecastle, poop and ship's midship respectively. Through the occurrence probability of the determined factor by Rayleigh's probability density function, the dangerousness which limits loads on container's side wall as an evaluation was applied in judging of the danger of the ship's cargo loaded.
In most shipyards Floating Dock-gate System is adapted for dry docks. For the safe launching of ships in dry docks, smooth operation of dock-gate must be guaranteed. So it is very important to grasp its behavior in waves for securing the high productivity and the safety of workers. Its seakeeping ability was estimated numerically at the floating conditions and the free roll decay and the seakeeping model tests of dock-gate was carried out with bilge-keels of 3 different widths which have a scale of 1 to 20. More than 20% decrease of roll motion was observed in irregular beam seas by applying a bilge-keel system to the dock-gate that is long and narrow.
The running attitude of a planing hull is determined by the pressure distribution on the hull bottom, and it significantly affects hydrodynamic performance of the ship, i.e., resistance, maneuverability, and seakeeping ability. Therefore, it is essential to investigate pressure distribution on the hull bottom in order to improve hull design. In the present study, a novel pressure measurement system using tactile sensors was introduced for a planing hull. The test model was a 23 m-class planing hull with a hard chine. The pressure measurement showed that the pressure at the transom was lower than the atmospheric pressure, owing to flow separation at the transom.
In this study, hull form of main vessel of Korean large purse seiner fishing industry is developed for the improvement of resistance performance as well as for the satisfaction to the Standard of Fishing Convention, ILO. Through the modification of reference hull form parameters and local characteristics, the hull form development is carried out. The optimum hull form parameters are searched by Sequential Quadratic Programing(SQP) method with the power estimation method of Holtrop & Mannen. To minimize the wave resistance, bulbous bow parameters are determined by the bulbous bow design method of Alvarino. The plasmatic curve is redesigned from that of the reference hull by using Lackenby method. The resistance performances of the reference and designed hull forms are estimated by using numerical simulation method. Also, the judgment of seakeeping ability and the estimation of intact stability for the designed hull form is carried out. As a result, the optimum hull form is proposed. To verify the improvement of resistance performance, model tests are carried out in towing tank. The results show that the resistance of the designed hull form is about 14% smaller than that of the reference hull from at design speed. A new hull form proposed in this study can contribute to the development of the main vessel hull form of Korean large purse seiner fishing system.
