2011년 2월 11~12일 부산 근해에서 발달한 극저기압에 대한 사례연구 (A Case Study on the Polar Low Developed over the Sea Near Busan on 11~12 February 2011)

  • The evolutionary process of the polar low, which caused the heavy snowfall in the East Coast area on 11~12 February 2011, was investigated to describe in detail using synoptic weather charts, satellite imageries, and ERA (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Re-Analysis) -Interim reanalysis data. It was revealed that 1) the polar low was generated over the sea near Busan where a large cyclonic shear in the inverted trough branched from the parent low existed, 2) during the developing and mature stages, there was a convectively unstable region in the lower layer around the polar low and its south side, 3) the polar low was developed in the region where the static stability in the 500~850 hPa layer was the lowest, 4) the result from the budget analysis of the vorticity equation indicated that the increase in the vorticity at the lower atmosphere, where the polar low was located, was dominated mainly by the stretching term, 5) the warm core structure of the polar low was identified in the surface-700 hPa layer during the mature stage, 6) there was a close inverse relationship between a development of the polar low and the height of the dynamic tropopause over the polar low, and 7) for generation and development of the polar low, large-scale circulation systems, such as upper cold low and its combined short wave trough, major low (parent low), and polar air outbreak, should be presented, indicating that the polar low has the nature of the baroclinic disturbance.

서해상에 발생하는 Cloud Streets에 동반된 2003년 1월 4일 강설의 레이더관측사례 분석 (Characteristics of Snowfall Event with Radar Analyses over Honam District and Gwangju Occurred by Cloud Streets over Yellow Sea for 04 Jan. 2003)

  • The formation and development conditions of the cloud streets over the yellow sea by the Cold Surge of Siberian Anticyclone Expansion which produce the heavy snowfall events over the southwestern coast, Honam District of the Korean peninsula, has been investigated through analyses of the three dimensional snow cloud structures by using the CAPPI, RHI, VAD and VVP data of X-band Radar at Muan Weather Observatory and S-band Radar at Jindo Weather Station. The data to be used are obtained from January 04, 2003, when heavy snow storm hits on Gwangju and Honam District. The PPI Radar images show that the cloud bands distribute in perpendicular to the expansion direction of the high pressure and that the radius of cloud cells is about 5~8 km with 20~30 dBz and distance between each cell is about 10 km. And but the vertical Radar images show that the cloud street is a small scale convective type cloud within height of about 3 km where a stable layer exists. From the VVP images, the time period of the high pressure expansion, the moving direction and development stages of the system are delineated. Finally, the vertical distribution of wind direction is fairly constants, while the wind speed sheer increases with altitude to 3 km.

  • The depth, width and alignment of fairway that are main port water facilities should be designed considering the various elements including particulars of design ships, weather and sea conditions around fairway and method of ship-handling. However not only the existing Japanese design standard for fairway and also those of other countries do not take into consideration of such kind of elements and no design standard is made by quantitative analysis. In this circumstance the new design standard (Approach Channels, A Guide for Design) depending on classified various elements and quantitative analysis was proposed in 1997 by PIANC and IAPH. But it was proved that calculated values according to this standard were unfounded and had some problems to output the discontinuous value by small difference of calculation condition because the each value fur each element was simply added. And also it is hard to apply this standard to the design of port water facilities in Japan because this [A Guide for Design] is the design standard for long channels in European port. The proposal of more reasonable Japanese standard will be expected by applying the study result of naval architecture and navigation and by the cooperation of ship operators to use fairway, naval architects to built ships and civil engineers to dredge fairway. The concept of a fairway in 'Design standard fur fairway in next generation' is defined as passage for approach channel) and traffic lane designated by light buoys as navigable water for safe navigation. In 'Design standard for fairway in next generation' depth, width and alignment are picked up among many design elements of a fairway. Design method for those elements is shown based on design ships and navigational environments. This standard shows the method of design for each dimension depending on characteristic on design ship and weather and sea condition. On the other hand, in case of existing fairway, it is possible to decide the size of ship and navigation criteria by opposite analysis.

Relationship between Low-level Clouds and Large-scale Environmental Conditions around the Globe

  • To understand the characteristics of low-level clouds (CLs), environmental variables are composited on each CL using individual surface observations and six-hourly upper-air meteorologies around the globe. Individual CLs has its own distinct environmental conditions. Over the eastern subtropical and western North Pacific Ocean in JJA, stratocumulus (CL5) has a colder sea surface temperature (SST), stronger and lower inversion, and more low-level cloud amount (LCA) than the climatology whereas cumulus (CL12) has the opposite characteristics. Over the eastern subtropical Pacific, CL5 and CL12 are influenced by cold and warm advection within the PBL, respectively but have similar cold advection over the western North Pacific. This indicates that the fundamental physical process distinguishing CL5 and CL12 is not the horizontal temperature advection but the interaction with the underlying sea surface, i.e., the deepening-decoupling of PBL and the positive feedback between shortwave radiation and SST. Over the western North Pacific during JJA, sky-obscuring fog (CL11), no low-level cloud (CL0), and fair weather stratus (CL6) are associated with anomalous warm advection, surface-based inversion, mean upward flow, and moist mid-troposphere with the strongest anomalies for CL11 followed by CL0. Over the western North Pacific during DJF, bad weather stratus (CL7) occurs in the warm front of the extratropical cyclone with anomalous upward flow while cumulonimbus (CL39) occurs on the rear side of the cold front with anomalous downward flow. Over the tropical oceans, CL7 has strong positive (negative) anomalies of temperature in the upper troposphere (PBL), relative humidity, and surface wind speed in association with the mesoscale convective system while CL12 has the opposite anomalies and CL39 is in between.

영동 지역 해풍 사례를 대상으로 수행한 지면 피복 자료에 따른 WRF 모델의 민감도 분석 (WRF Sensitivity Experiments on the Choice of Land Cover Data for an Event of Sea Breeze Over the Yeongdong Region)

  • This research focuses on the sensitivity of the WRF(Weather Research and Forecasting) Model according to three different land cover data(USGS(United States Geological Survey), MODIS(Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer)30s+USGS, and KLC (Korea Land Cover)) for an event of sea breeze, occurred over the Gangwon Yeongdong region on 13 May 2009. Based on the observation, the easterly into Gangneung, due to the sea-breeze circulation, was identified between 1000 LST and 1640 LST. It did not reach beyond the Taebaek Mountain Range and thus the easterly was not observed near Daegwallyeong. On the other hand, the numerical simulations utilizing land cover data of USGS, MODIS30s+USGS, and KLC showed easterlies beyond the Taebaek Mountain Range up to Daegwallyeong. In addition, rather different penetration distances of each easterly, and different timings of beginning and ending of sea breeze were identified among the simulations. The Bias, MAE(Mean Absolute Error) and RMSE(Root Mean Square Error) of the wind from WRF simulation using MODIS30s+USGS land cover data were the least among the simulations particularly over Gangwon Yeongdong coastal area(Sokcho, Gangneung and Donghae), while those of the wind over the Gangwon Mountain area(Daegwallyeong and Jinbu) from the simulation using KLC land cover data were the least among them. The wind field over Gangwon Yeongdong coastal area from the simulation using USGS land cover data was rather poor among them.

선행 태풍의 해수 냉각에 의한 해수면 온도 경도가 후행 태풍의 진로에 미치는 영향: 볼라벤(1215)과 덴빈(1214) (Effect of Sea Surface Temperature Gradient Induced by the Previous Typhoon's Cold Wake on the Track of the Following Typhoon: Bolaven (1215) and Tembin (1214))

  • The effects of sea surface temperature (SST) gradient induced by the previous typhoon on the following typhoon motion over East Asia have been investigated using Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model for the previous Typhoon Bolaven (1215) and following Typhoon Tembin (1214). It was observed that Typhoon Bolaven remarkably reduced SST by about $7^{\circ}C$ at Yellow Sea buoy (YSbuoy). Using the WRF experiments for the imposed cold wake over West of Tembin (WT) and over East of Tembin (ET), this study demonstrates that the effects of eastward SST gradient including cold wake over WT is much significant rather than that over ET in relation to unexpected Tembin's eastward deflection. This difference between two experiments is attributed to the fact that cold wake over WT increases the magnitude of SST gradient under the eastward SST gradient around East Asia and the resultant asymmetric flow deflects Typhoon Tembin eastward, which is mainly due to the different atmospheric response to the SST forcing between ET and WT. Therefore, it implies that the enhanced eastward SST gradient over East Asia results in larger typhoon deflection toward the region of warmer SST according to the location of the cold wake effect. This result can contribute to the improvement of track prediction for typhoons influencing the Korean Peninsula

저기압 및 태풍 통과시 서해상의 해상상태 사례 분석 (Case Study on the State of Sea Surface with Low Atmospheric Pressure and Typhoon Conditions over the fellow Sea)

  • 서해 상에서 저기압과 태풍 통과 시 해상상태를 비교 분석을 하였다. 1999년 4월 9일${\sim}$12일에 강한 저기압이 화중지방에서 발생하여 서해를 지나 한반도에 영향을 미친 경우의 9905호 태풍 NEIL과 9907호 태풍 OLGA가 서해를 통과하면서 서해 연안에 영향을 미친 사례이다. 봄철 이동성 저기압 발생 시 에는 저기압 중심부의 풍속이 주변 지역에 비해 위상이 빠르고 강하게 나타나며, 이에 수반되어 발생하는 파고는 주변의 지형적 영향으로 다르게 나타날 수 있다. 이에 비해 두 태풍에 의해 발생한 파고는 태풍 Olga가 서해 남부해역에서 북상할 시기에 칠발도 근해상에서 5m이상의 높은 유의파고를 발생한 것 이외에는 저기압 통과 시보다 파고가 낮다. 해일도 태풍보다 저기압 통과 시에 더 크게 나타나는데, 이러한 결과는 강하지만 국지적이고 빠르게 이동하는 태풍보다 종관적이고 느리게 이동하는 기압장에 의해 발생한 파도와 해일이 더 클 수 있음을 보여준다.

우리나라 서해에서 발생한 겨울철 고파의 관측자료 분석 (Analysis of the Observation Data for Winter-Season High Waves Occurred in the West Sea of Korea)

  • 우리나라 서해안 다섯 개 관측점에서 취득된 파랑자료를 분석하여 겨울철 서해에서 발생한 고파의 특성을 분석하였다. 고파가 발생하였던 네 시기를 선별하여 그 기간 동안의 파랑 및 기상자료를 함께 분석에 이용하였다. 이들 관측 기간 중 유의파고의 최대값은 2005년 12월 4일에 관측된 6.42 m였다. 분석 결과로부터 온대성저기압이 급속하게 발달할 때 서해상에 형성되는 강한 바람장에 의해 고파가 발생함을 확인하였다. 파랑 관측점에서의 파고의 시간적 변화는 인근 기상관측점에서의 풍속의 시간적 변화와 밀접한 관련을 나타냈으며, 이는 서해상에서 생성된 고파가 풍파의 성격이 지배적임을 나타낸다.

  • 우리나라 원전이 위치하고 있는 해안지역에서 빈번히 발생하는 해륙풍 등과 같은 국지순환에 따른 방사성 물질의 대기확산 특성을 알아보기 위해 월성원전 주변지역을 대상으로 삼차원 해륙풍 모델과 라그랑지안 입자확산모델을 이용하여 봄철 약한 북풍이 부는 맑은 날과 강한 북풍이 부는 맑은 날에 대해 방사성 물질 확산에 관한 삼차원 시뮬레이션을 수행하였다. 시뮬레이션 결과, 해륙풍과 같은 국지순환의 발달여부에 따라 방사성 입자의 대기확산이 서로 다르게 나타남을 알 수 있었다. 또한 해륙풍의 해풍과 육풍의 풍향교체에 따른 입자의 재순환 현상이 대기중 농도분포에 중요한 역할을 하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

QuikSCAT 위성 데이터를 이용한 한반도 주변의 해상 풍력자원 평가 (Offshore Wind Resource Assessment around Korean Peninsula by using QuikSCAT Satellite Data)

  • QuikSCAT 위성의 관측자료를 이용하여 2000년 1월로부터 2008년 12월에 걸쳐 한반도 근해의 풍력자원을 평가 하였다. QuikSCAT 위성은 초단파 scatterometer를 이용하여 해수면 가까이의 풍향과 풍속을 전천후 상태에서 측정한다. 해면으로부터 10 m 높이에서 측정된 풍속을 power law모델을 이용하여 허브 높이에 맞게 외삽 보정하였다. 계산 결과 한반도의 남해와 동해에서 풍력에너지가 상대적으로 우세하다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 풍력 터빈 타워의 설치를 위해 깊은 수심을 피하고 대규모 풍력단지 조성을 위해 남해의 다도해 지역을 피한다면 한반도 서쪽 또는 남서쪽 연안이 대규모 풍력단지 조성에 유리하나 상대적으로 낮은 풍속을 고려한 블레이드 개발을 요한다. 바람 지도를 작성하였으며, 특정 지점에 대한 월별 풍속 변화를 파악하였다. 그리고 풍력에너지 밀도를 이용한 바람장미를 파악하였다.
