  • This study is about interdisciplinary education model of using Davis Guggenheim's documentary film on global warming which is a big concern in climate change issues, An Inconvenient Truth. It based on Al Gore's slide speech. Through a course student analyzed the cause and phenomenon of global warming resulted from increase of $CO_2$ by using fossil fuel and its environmental science effects-heat wave, desertification, tornado, hurricane, sea level rise caused by melting glaciers, destroying ecosystem like habitat degradation of wild animals, for example polar bear, extreme cold wave caused by change of ocean currents- of global warming. After, student discussed of efforts to prevent global warming. This educational model is appropriate for lower grade student of environmental engineering and also available for converged majors or general education class.

  • Beginning a few decades ago, Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan, has experienced a dramatic construction boom that is revitalizing its skyline. The expansive growth looks to uphold the historic past of Baku as a focal point within the Caspian Sea Region while also evoking aspirations for a city of the future. With superstructure complete and interiors progressing, the Ministry of Taxation (MOT) tower is the latest addition to the city, with its stacked cubes twisting above a multi-level podium at the base. Each cube is separated by column-free green roof terraces, creating unique parametric reveals of the developing surroundings. Aside from MOT's stunning shape, its geolocation resulted in unusually high wind loads coupled with high seismic hazards for a tower of its height. In addition, limitations on possible structural systems required stepping away from a typical prescriptive code-based approach into one that utilized Performance-Based Design (PBD) methods. This paper presents the numerous structural challenges and innovations that allowed the design of a new icon to be realized.

  • Analysis of the Late Quaternary benthic foraminifera in the cores from the western part of the East Sea, Korea, indicates several distinct changes in the paleoenvironments during the deposition. The palecology of biofacies of Cores PC-1 from the upper slop and PC-2 from the rise shows several distinct changes in bottom water temperatures during the late Quaternary. The Core PC-4 from the Ulleung Basin generally consists of agglutinated genus, Muiliammina, and anaerobic calcareous genus, Bolivina, in biofacies, suggesting that the anoxic bottom condition was prevailed during the deposition. Benthic foraminiferal rare or barren zones in the Cores indicate the limits of water circulation caused by lower sea-level in the regions during the glacial period through the Late Quaternary. The changes of benthic foraminiferal biofacies reflect temporal and spacial variations in overall bottom environments, such as bottom water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and water circulation pattern. The benthic foraminiferal data can be used to interpret paleoclimatic conditions and predict global sea-level changes, and the results of these studies should be useful to understand the evolutional history of the East Sea through the Late Quaternary.

  • East China Sea (ECS) is known to be supplied with large amounts of sediments form Huanghe, Changjiang and various rivers in Korea. Many studies have been conducted to identify the effects of rivers and deposition process of ECS, but no consensus has been reached. In this study, clay minerals, rare earth elements (REEs) and grain size were analyzed to study the provenance and sedimentation environment of core 99MAP-P63 in ECS. Clay mineral contents of 99MAP-P63 are abundant in order of illite, chlorite, kaolinite, and smectite. The provenance of 99MAP-P63 sediments using clay minerals is interpreted as the Changjiang regardless of depth. As a result of REEs analysis, 99MAP-P63 sediments are very similar to Chinese rivers sediments. Therefore, the provenance of 99MAP-P63 is Changjiang, and the influence of Korean river seems to be insignificant. 99MAP-P63 sediments are generally classified as sandy silt, but the top of the core is divided into sand with a sand contents of 85 %. Compared with surrounding cores, sandy silt sediments arecorresponded to the low stand stage when sea-level was low, and the sediments were thought to have been supplied directly through the paleo-Changjiang. Sandy sediments in uppermost of core are corresponded to transgressive stage. Although distance from estuary was increased due to sea-level rise, it was possible to supply coarse sediments due to high bottom stress, and the paleo-Changjiang sediments deposited in study area were re-deposited.

  • The hypothetical earthquake located on the fault zone along the western coast of Japan, where sufficient time has elapsed since the last earthquake or an earthquake has not occurred yet, is known to possess significant potential energy. The possibility of earthquake activities occurring here in the future is high. It is expected that the resulting tsunamis will cause great damage to the East Sea coast of Korea and affect parts of the southern coast as well. In this study, tsunami that may be caused by a virtual earthquake that is expected in the hypothetical earthquake, along the western coast of Japan, will be estimated using numerical simulation. From this, the effect of the tsunami originating from the hypothetical earthquake on the southeastern coast of Korea will be evaluated by examining the water level rise due to the maximum water level rise and changing time, for each point along the southeastern coast. It will be possible to use the virtual results obtained like this as important basic materials in future disaster prevention plans and designs, for determining the direction of coastal development, for arranging seashore and harbor structures and to carry out wave resistant design for the southeastern coast of Korea.

  • In this study, In this study, the Datum Level-based hydrography surveying system and the ellipsoid-based system were analyzed to acquire more consistent depth data. For the study, the ellipsoid-based surveying for hydrography was conducted twice for the same track line. And the depth was calculated by correcting rise and fall of water level (water level change by tidal energy and other marine environmental energies) respectively by the traditional water level correction method and ellipsoidally referenced water level correction method. there is able to check that Ellipsoid-based hydrographic surveying data is more improved than Datum Level-based hydrographic surveying data in aspect of level difference phenomenon in the same area (surveying line). This result shows that if the Ellipsoid-based hydrographic surveying is performed, the sea level change (tidal energy and other marine environmental energy) of the survey area in real time could be reflected to more consistent generating bathymetric data.

  • Saltwater intrusion effects of coastal aquifers in Korea peninsula were analyzed through trend analysis with groundwater level, seawater level, seawater temperature, and electrical resistivity(EC) data sets. Groundwater level and EC data sets from 27 coastal regions were collected and analyzed. Groundwater level was stable for all the regions however EC data showed stable or changing trends (9 increasing, 10 stable, and 8 decreasing regions). Seawater temperature was collected and analyzed for 14 regions and they are increasing for most regions (12 increasing and 2 stable regions). Seawater level was also collected and analyzed for 24 regions and is rising for most regions (18 rising, 3 stable, and 3 falling regions). Especially, west cost regions have stronger increasing tendencies of seawater level, seawater temperature, and EC than eastern and southern coastal regions. Therefore the saltwater intrusion problem can be serious for west cost regions in Korea peninsula and it is necessary to establish a plan to minimize the damages from saltwater intrusion.

  • In Namyang Bay of western Korea, macrotidal-flat deposits are divisible into three late Quaternary units: Unit M1 of upper marine mud, Unit T1 of middle siderite-bearing terrestrial clay, and Unit M2 of lower marine mud. Unit M1 represents typical Holocene intertidal mudflat deposits, showing a coarsening-upward textural trend. It probably resulted from the continual retrogradation of tidal flat during the mid-to-late Holocene sea-level rise. Reddish brown-color Unit T1 consists of homogeneous clay with abundant freshwater siderite grains and plant remains. Unit T1 is clearly separated from the overlying Unit M1 by a sharp lithologic boundary. Radiocarbon age, siderite grains and lithologic features indicate that Unit T1 is originated from freshwater bog or swamp deposition infilling the localized topographic lows during the early Holocene age. Overlain unconformably by early Holocene swamp clay, Unit M2 is orange to yellow in color and mottled, suggesting significant degree of weathering during the sea-level lowstand. Such subaerial oxidation is confirmed in the vertical profiles of geotechnical properties, clay mineral assemblages and magnetic susceptibility. Unit M2 appears to be correlated with the upper part of the late Pleistocene tidal deposits developed along the western Korean coast. The sedimentary succession of the Namyang-Bay tidal-flat deposit provides stratigraphic information for the Holocene-late Pleistocene unconformity and also permits an assessment of the preservation potential of the late Pleistocene marginal marine deposit along the western coast of Korea.

  • In recent years, a large natural disasters have occurred due to worldwide abnormal weather and the amount of damage has been increased more resulting from high density population and a large-sized buildings of the urbanized area. In this study. we estimate the flooded area according to rainfall probability intensify and sea level in Woreong dong, Masan occurred flood damages by typhoon Maemi using SWMM, a dynamic rainfall-runoff simulation model in urban area, and then analyze the damage of flood expected area through connecting with GIS database. In result, we can predict accurately expected area of inundation according to the rainfall intensity and sea level rise through dividing the study area into sub-area and estimating a flooded area and height using SWMM. We provide also the shelter information available for urban planning and flood risk estimation by landuse in expected flood area. Further research for hazard management system construction linked with web or wireless communication technology expects to increase its application.
