Most seismic sea waves in the East Sea originate from earthquakes occurring near the Japanese west coast. While the waves propagate in the East Sea, they are deformed by refraction, diffraction and scattering. Though the Boussinesq equation is most applicable for such wave phenomena, it was not used in numerical modelling of seismic sea waves in the East Sea. To examine characteristics of seismic sea waves in the East Sea, numerical models based on the Boussinesq equation are established and used to simulate recent tsunamis. By considering Ursell parameter and Kajiura parameter, it is proved that Boussinesq equation is a proper equation for seismic sea waves in the East Sea. Two models based on the Boussinesq equation and linear wave equation are executed with the same initial conditions and grid size ($1min{\times}1min$), and the results are compared in various respects. The Boussinesq equation model produced better results than the linear model in respect to wave propagation and concentration of wave energy. It is also certified that the Boussinesq equation model can be used for operational purpose if it is optimized. Another Boussinesq equation model whose grid size is $40sec{\times}30sec$ is set up to simulate the 1983 and 1993 tsunamis. As the result of simulation, new propagation charts of 2 seismic sea waves focused on the Korean east coast are proposed. Even though the 1983 and 1993 tsunamis started at different areas, the propagation paths near the Korean east coast are similar and they can be distinguished into 4 paths. Among these, total energy and propagating time of the waves passing over North Korea Plateau(NKP) and South Korea Plateau(SKP) determine wave height at the Korean east coast. In case of the 1993 tsunami, the wave passing over NKP has more energy than the wave over SKP. In case of the 1983 tsunami, the huge energy of the wave passing over SKP brought about great maximum wave heights at Mukho and Imwon. The Boussinesq equation model established in this study is more useful for simulation of seismic sea waves near the Korean east coast than it is the Japanese coast. To improve understanding of seismic sea waves in shallow water, a coastal area model based on the Boussinesq equation is also required.
We studied on the relationship between oceanic variation in the offshore and abnormal sea surface temperature rise in the coastal area of the Yellow Sea using a variety of satellite and in-situ data during winter 2004. In results of the satellite data, the average value of sea surface temperature in the Yellow Sea for 2003 was $10^{\circ}C$, and the average value of sea surface temperature for 2004 was $13^{\circ}C$. It was higher than those of the last year about $3^{\circ}C$. In results of the in-situ data, the average value of surface layer temperature in the Yellow Sea for 2003 was $9.85^{\circ}C$, and the average value of surface layer temperature for 2004 was $12.17^{\circ}C$. In the same satellite data, it was higher than those of the last year about $3^{\circ}C$. In results of the T-S diagram, we divided definitely into water mass of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea in 2003. But we didn't divide definitely into water mass of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea in 2004. The average values of air temperature and wind speed for 2003 were $5.23^{\circ}C$ and 4.81 m/s, respectively. And, the average values of air temperature and wind speed for 2004 were $5.61^{\circ}C$ and 4.52 m/s, respectively. So, These were similar. But the wind directions for 2003 were superior northwestern wind, and the wind directions for 2004 were various northern wind. The wind directions were different from each other. Therefore, the abnormal sea surface temperature rise in the coastal area of the Yellow Sea during winter 2004 were better related to oceanic variation in the offshore than influences of atmosphere. In the future, We will do in-depth study for these.

The distribution and genotypes of the sea nettle Chrysaora pacifica have been reported in the South Sea of Korea; however, little research work has been attempted in the East Sea. Here, we collected similar jellyfishes from the East Sea coasts (Goseong, Yangyang and Sokcho), and identified them to the sea nettle morphologically. In addition, the genotypes of these sea nettle were compared with those from the South Sea (Tongyeong and Geoje). Phylogenetic analysis by using the mitochondrial COI sequences showed that the genus Chrysaora was clearly separated from other taxa to be formed a monophyletic group, with each species distinctly separated. C. pacifica in the East and South Seas was separated geographically by the COI phylogeography, representing potentially different populations. The COI gene of the Korean C. pacifica had approximately 7 times more genetic variation than the nuclear ITS rDNA, and thus it might be considered as a useful marker for genetic analysis of the jellyfish population.
A comparison was made between the chlorophyll a and suspended solid (SS) retrievals from OSMI and SeaWiFS sensor to chlorophyll a and SS values determined with the standard method during the NFRDI's research cruises. The percentage of organic and inorganic materials from the SS was calculated to study the contribution of turbid water in the northern part of the East China Sea. The open sea waters in the Kuroshio regions of the East China Sea showed relatively higher concentration of volatile SS. However, towards the northwestern part of the East China Sea, the situation became much more optically different with the non-volatile SS from the Yangtze river and the sea bottom sources in the sea in winter and spring seasons. Furthermore, in order to indirectly detect low salinity water with high turbidity, which related to the Yangtze river using remote sensed data from the satellites, a comparison between the results of the band ratio(nLw 490nm/nLw 555nm) of SeaWiFS (OSMI) and the distribution of low salinity around the Jeju Island was presented.

Recent ocean warming near the Korean peninsula and our lack of knowledge of an important vertebrate group, the sea snakes, encouraged us to clarify this part of Korea's regional fauna. We re-examined photographs that had been used to report the slender-necked sea snake (Hydrophis melanocephalus) in 1995. We discovered it was misidentified. To determine the correct identity of the sea snake, we studied 13 original photographs taken at the collecting site in Sooyoung Bay, Busan-si, in 1995 and determined the snake to be Laticauda semifasciata based on enlarged ventral scales, definitive for Laticaudinae sea snakes, and internasal scales, pale blue body color, divided rostral scale, and evident "V"-shaped stripes on the body trunk, definitive for L. semifasciata. Therefore, the snake caught 30 years ago in Korean waters should be considered the first record of a Laticaudinae sea snake in Korean waters. L. semifasciata is listed as near threatened setting the stage for urgently needed studies of sea snakes in Korea and supporting those currently underway.

This experiment was carried out to evaluated biological availability of calcium inthe sea mustard, sea tangle and sea lettuce in the rats. Standard diets were made to supply 0.3% of Ca from CaCO3. Consequently, levels each test ingredients to be added were sets by their Cacontents. The ingredients such as sea mustard, sea tangle and sea lettuce wereadded to basal diet at levels of 15.23%, 12.66% and 23.42% respectively. Ingredients of the basal diet were soybean protein, corn oil, alpha-cellulose, methionine, choline cholride and vitamin and mineral premix. Dextrose was added at level up to 100%. Amount of soybean protein was adjustable to make all the diets isontrogenous. Rats were fed ad libitum the diets for 13 days. The results were summarized as follow: 1. Serum calcium levels of the sea mustard group(15.23%) were higher than those of the other group, but rats fed sea lettuce diets appeared to have the lowest value. 2. Ca concentration in tibia were lower in rats fed with sea lettuce, rather than in those with standard diet. 3. Ca concentration in femur of the rats fed seaweeds did not show any significant difference among groups. 4. In the liver weight in groups fed on the all experimental groups were decreased more than that in the case of the standard diet groups.

The regional air movement in a coastal area is generated by the different heat capacities of sea and land sides, which is called sea/land breeze. In the west coast area, the local air quality is significantly influenced by this sea/land breeze. In this study, the mathematical model is proposed to estimate the effective area of sea/land breeze. A commercial air model, that is suggested as an alternative air model by USEPA, is introduced to simulate the mechanism of sea/land breeze generation. From this study, it is confirmed that the numerical approach proposed in this study is reliable to predict the effective area of sea breeze in a coastal area. It implies that the current application of common air model needs to be carefully reviewed especially when dealing with a coastal air quality issue. It is also found that the sea breeze in Incheon area has the impact in the range of approximately 24 km in-land side, so-called penetration length.
Members of the phylum Echinodermata, commonly known as echinoderms, are exclusively marine invertebrates. Among the Echinodermata, sea cucumber belongs to the family Holothuroidea. The sea cucumber Stichopus (Apostichous) japonicus (Selenka) is an invertebrate animal inhabiting the coastal sea around Korean, Japan, China, and Russia. Sea cucumber has a significant commercial value, because it contains valuable nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. They possess a number of distinctive biologically and pharmacologically important compounds. In particular, the body wall of sea cucumber is a major edible part. It consists of peptide, collagen, gelatin, polysaccharide, and saponin, which possess several biological activities such as anti-cancer, anti-coagulation, anti-oxidation, and anti-osteoclastogenesis. Furthermore, the regenerative capacity of sea cucumber makes it a medically important organism. This review presents the various biological activities and biomedical potential of sea cucumber S. japonicus.
A Line Density algorithm was developed to quantify the sea surface temperature distribution using NOAA Sea Surface Temperature(SST) data and Geographic Information Systems(GIS), In addition, a GIS based automation model was designed to extract the Line Density Indices were determined by applying K-means Cluster. SST data in terms of March to May obtained on the coastal area of the Uljin from 2001 to 2004 in spring were used to make two data sets of average sea water temperature map in terms of year as well as month. From the result it was formed that water temperature gradient in April was the strongest among the other months, In particular very strog formation of oceanic front as well as temperature gradients were observed in front of the coastal area around Wonduk and Jukbyeon countries. Because those coastal area is a confront zone of two cold and a warm. It is expected that the development of a Line Density Algorithm would contribute to quantify of the SST for the research of Sea Surface Front(SSF) related to marine life management and the sea environmental conservation.
To correctly estimate ice load and ice resistance for a ship's hull, it is essential to understand the material properties of sea ice during ice field trials and to use the proper experimental procedure for gathering ice strength data. The first Korean-made icebreaking research vessel (IBRV), ARAON, had her second sea ice trial in the Arctic Ocean during July and August of 2010. This paper describes the test procedures used to properly obtain sea ice strength data, which provides the basic information on the ship's performance in an ice-covered sea and can be used to estimate the correct ice load and ice resistance on the IBRV ARAON. The data gathered from three sea ice field trials during the Arctic voyage of the ARAON includes the ice compressive strength, flexural strength, and failure strain of sea ice. This paper analyzes the gathered sea ice data in comparison with data from the first voyage of the ARAON during her Antarctic Sea ice trial in January 2010.
