Effects of selenium source and level on the physiological response, reproductive performance, serum Se level and milk composition in gestating sows

  • Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of selenium (Se) source and level on the physiological response, reproductive performance, serum Se level, and milk composition in gestating sows. Methods: A total of 54 multiparous sows (Yorkshire×Landrace) with average body weight (BW), backfat thickness (BF), and parity were assigned to one of five treatments with 10 or 11 sows per treatment using a 2×2 factorial arrangement with one additional treatment in a completely randomized design. Inorganic or organic Se (IS or OS) sources were added to the diet at 0.30 ppm and 0.50 ppm Se. A non-Se-fortified corn-soybean meal basal diet served as a negative control. Treatments were as follows: i) Control: corn-soybean based diet, ii) IS30: control+inorganic Se 0.30 ppm, iii) IS50: control+inorganic Se 0.50 ppm, iv) OS30: control+ organic Se ppm, and v) OS50: control+organic Se 0.50 ppm. Results: At day 21 of lactation, piglet weight and weight gain in the OS treatments were higher than those in the IS treatments (p<0.05). Meanwhile, adding 0.5 ppm Se also resulted in the same significant differences in piglet BW and weight gain (p<0.05). Colostrum and milk Se concentrations increased (p<0.05) with Se level for both Se sources but were greater when sows were fed organic Se (p<0.05). Except for 24 hours postpartum, the Se concentrations were higher when sows were fed organic Se (p<0.05). Sow serum Se content was greater as Se levels increased from 0.3 ppm to 0.5 ppm at day 110 of gestation, 24 hours postpartum and day 21 of lactation (p<0.05). The pig serum Se concentration increased as the dietary Se level increased (p<0.05) and was higher when the sow dietary Se source was organic (p<0.05). Organic Se 0.5 ppm also had the highest serum Se level at two measured points (p<0.05). Conclusion: Consequently, supplementation with organic Se or 0.5 ppm Se in a gestating diet could improve piglet performance, the Se status of sows and piglets and milk composition, but organic Se at 0.5 ppm is optimal.

셀레늄 처리가 배 '원황' 과실 품질 특성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Selenium Treatment on the Quality of 'Wonwhang' Pear Fruit)

  • 본 연구는 셀레늄(Se) 처리가 '원황' 배 과실품질에 미치는 영향을 구명하고자 실시하였다. 과실의 색상과 과형은 처리 간에 차이가 없었다. 모든 Se처리는 과실 내 칼륨과 Se함량을 높였으며, 과실의 단맛을 높이고 신맛을 줄이는 결과를 나타냈다. 저온 저장 시 과실의 경도를 조사한 결과, 모든 Se 처리구에서 대조구보다 높은 과실경도를 유지했다. 또한 Se 처리구에서, 높은 과실 비중과 과육 내 치밀한 세포 조밀도를 나타내서, 배 과일의 상품성을 저하시키는 바람들이 현상을 감소시켰다. 전체적으로 Se 처리방법에 따른 과실품질의 유의적인 차이는 크지 않았으나, Se 엽면 살포구에서 보다 더 나은 상품성 과실을 생산할 수 있는 토대를 마련하였다.

  • In 1957, Schwarz and Foltz discovered that selenium (Se) was an essential trace mineral and nutritionists then started extensive studies to figure out the metabolic function of this element which has been called as toxic mineral. The discovery that glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) contained Se demonstrated a biochemical role for Se as an essential trace element. The major physiological function of Se containing GSH-Px is thought to maintain low levels of $H_2O_2$ and other hydroperoxides in the cell to prevent tissues from peroxidation damages. It is known that the GSH-Px activity is increased when animals were fed high dietary levels of Se. Chemical properties of Se have much in common with sulfur (S) therefore Se would follow the sulfur pathways in its metabolism in animal body. Two sources of Se are available for supplementation of Se in animal feed. Inorganic Se can also exist in selenide (-2), elemental (0), selenite (+4) and selenate (+6) oxidation state with other minerals. When sulfur in S containing amino acids is replaced by Se, organic Se can be made and named "eleno"prior to the name of S containing amino acid, i.e. selenomethionine. Selenium deficiency affects humans as well as animals and dysfunctions such as exudative diathesis, retained placenta, mastitis, liver necrosis, Keshan disease, numerous diseases and cancer. From several centuries ago, Se toxicity was recognized in various animal species and much of the current toxic Se levels has been established largely based upon the controlled toxicity studies used inorganic Se. Toxic effects of Se in animal result in reduced feed intake, growth retardation, ataxia, diarrhea, alopecia and sloughing of hooves. However, several experiments demonstrated that Se deficiencies or toxicities were varied by dietary Se levels and sources. Recent studies demonstrated that the incidence of colorectal and prostate cancer was reduced by approximately 50% when humans consumed 200 ${\mu}g$ of Se daily.

요양병원 입원 노인의 자아존중감에 따른 건강상태와 간이영양상태 비교 (Comparison of Health Status and Mini Nutritional Assessment according to Self-esteem of Elderly in Care Hospital)

  • The purpose of the study was to examine health status and mini nutritional assessment (MNA) according to self-esteem status of elderly in care hospital. The survey was carried out from $13^{th}$ to $31^{st}$ of September, 2014 in five care hospitals. Analysis was performed for 226 subjects. Evaluation criteria included demographics, clinical status, MNA, health-related quality of life (EQ-5D) and self-esteem. The SE I, SE II and SE III groups were divided by self-esteem scores. Data were analyzed one-way ANOVA, Duncan' multiple range test and Pearson's correlation using SPSS 15.0. Education level, religion, dental condition and medical endurance type were significantly different in all groups. Many elderly people were normal BMI ($20.94{\sim}21.67kg/m^2$). Self-esteem significantly increased in order of SE I, SE II and SE III. Mobility, usual activity and anxiety or depression were significantly different in all groups, and EQ-5D of SE II and SE III groups were significantly higher than that of SE I group. Comparison of MNA screening score in elderly patients was as follows : Score for food intake, psychological stress or acute disease, neuropsychological problems, pressure scores or skin ulcer, protein intake, mode of feeding, nutritional status and health status in SE I group were significantly lower than those of SE II and SE III groups. Mobility and drug intake of SE I group were significantly lower than those of SE III groups. Fruit and vegetable intake SE I group were significantly higher than those of SE II and SE III groups. MIS (Malnutrition Indicator Score) was significantly different among the SE I, SE II and SE III groups. We conclude that self-esteem score is positively correlated with protein intake, nutrition status, health status and MIS in elderly care hospital. To improve nutritional status of elderly in care hospitals, systematic nutrition management and self-esteem education program should be implemented.

  • Polycrystalline Cu(In,Ga)Se$_2$(CIGS) thin-films were grown by co-evaporation on a soda lime glass substrate. In this paper the effects of the Se evaporation temperature on the properties of CuIn0.75Ga0.25Se2 (CIGS) thin films. Structure, surface morphology and optical properties of CIGS thin films deposited at various Se evaporation temperatures have been investigated using a number of analysis techniques. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows that CIGS films exhibit a strong <112> preferred orientation. As expected, at higher Se evaporation temperatures the films displayed a lower degree of crystallinity. The <112> peak was also enhanced and other CIGS peaks appeared simultaneously. These results were supported by experimental work using scanning electron microscopy When the Se evaporation temperature was increased, the average grain size also decreased together with a reduction Cu content. The Se evaporation temperature also had a significant inf1uence on the transmission spectra. Increasing the Se evaporation temperature, the cell efficiency was improved dramatically to 11.75% with Voc = 556 mV, Jsc = 32.17 mA/cm2 and FF = 0.66. The Se evaporation temperature is an important parameter in thin film deposition regardless of the deposition technique being used to deposit thin films

  • 나노입자를 이용하여 치밀한 $Cu(In,\;Ga)Se_2$ 태양전지용 광흡수층을 제조하기 위해 먼저, 콜로이달 방법으로 합성된 20nm이하의 CIGS 나노입자를 저가의 스프레이 법을 이용하여 CIGS 막을 제조하였다. 제조된 CIGS막을 two-zone RTP (rapid temperature Process) 방법으로 Se 분위기 안에서 열처리를 행하였다. 입자의 치밀화를 위해 기판의 온도, Se 증발온도와 수송가스의 유량을 조절하여 CIGS 입자성장을 행하였다. 그러나, Se의 증발온도가 높을수록 CIGS와 MO 박막 사이에서 $MoSe_2$ 층이 형성되었다. 형성된 $MoSe_2$층의 부피 팽창으로 인해 하부의 유리기판과 Mo층 사이에서 peeling off 현상이 발생했다. 이러한 Peeling off현상을 억제하면서 CIGS 나노입자 성장을 하기 위해, Se 공급을 빨리 할 수 있도록 Se의 증기압을 높였으며, 최적조건에서 급속 열처리 공정을 통해 CIGS 나노입자 성장과 치밀화를 위한 소결거동을 관찰하였다.

$In_2Se_3$$Cu_2Se$를 이용한 $CuInSe_2$박막제조 및 특성분석 (Fabrication and Characterization of $CuInSe_2$Thin Films from $In_2Se_3$ and$Cu_2Se$Precursors)

  • CdS/CuInSe$_2$태양전지의 광흡수층인 CuInSe$_2$박막을 In$_2$Se$_3$와 Cu$_2$Se 이원화합물을 precursor로 하여 진공증발법으로 제조하였고 특성을 분석하였다. 먼저 유리기판위에 0.5$\mu\textrm{m}$ 두께의 In$_2$Se$_3$를 susceptor온도를 변화시켜가면서 증착한 결과 40$0^{\circ}C$에서 가장 평탄하고 치밀한 박막이 형성되었다. 그 위에 Cu$_2$Se$_3$를 진공증발시켜 증착함으로써 in-situ로 CuInSe$_2$박막을 형성시키고 In$_2$Se$_3$를 추가로 증발시켜 CuInSe$_2$박막내에 존재하는 제 2상인 Cu$_2$Se를 제거시켰다. 이 경우 susceptor온도가 $700^{\circ}C$ 일때 미세구조가 가장 좋은 CuInSe$_2$박막이 형성되었으며 약 1.2$\mu\textrm{m}$ 두께에서 약 2$\mu\textrm{m}$의 결정립크기와 (112) 우선배향성을 가졌다. 추가 In$_2$Se$_3$양이 증가함에 따라 CuInSe$_2$박막의 조성편차보상으로 hole 농도가 감소하고 전기 비저항이 증가하였고, optical bandgap은 거의 일정한 값인 1.04eV의 값을 가졌다. Mo/유리기판 위에 증착한 CuInSe$_2$박막도 유리기판 위에 증착한 박막과 비슷한 미세구조를 가졌으며, 이 박막을 토대로 ZnO/CdS/CuInSe$_2$/Mo 구조를 갖는 태양전지 구현이 가능할 것으로 생각된다.

셀레늄강화 버섯폐배지에 대한 사료 셀레늄공급원으로의 평가 연구 (Studies on the Evaluation of the Spent Composts of Selenium-Enriched Mushrooms as a Feed Selenium Source)

  • 본 연구는 버섯을 키우는 배지에 무기셀레늄을 배지 kg당 2 mg을 첨가하여 셀레늄강화팽이버섯을 생산하고, 인체 또는 가축의 셀레늄 급원으로서 버섯과 폐배지 각각의 셀레늄함량 및 조성 그리고 버섯내에서 일어나는 셀레늄축적 대사를 조사하였다. 무처리버섯과 셀레늄처리버섯의 총 셀레늄 함량은 셀레늄처리버섯이 건조 g당 4.51 ㎍의 셀레늄을 나타내어 셀레늄 무처리 버섯의 0.23 ㎍에 비하여 약 20 배정도 증가하였다(P<0.0001). 그리고 유기셀레늄 비율은 셀레늄처리버섯에서 72.30%를 나타내었고, 무처리 버섯은 무기셀레늄이 검출되지 않아, 총 셀레늄 중 유기셀레늄의 비율이 100%로 평가되었다(P<0.0001). 폐배지 내 셀레늄함량은 셀레늄처리버섯 폐배지에서 건조 g당 5.04 ㎍으로 나타났고, 무처리 폐배지에서는 0.08 ㎍으로 유의하게 낮았다(P<0.0001). 셀레늄처리버섯 폐배지의 유기셀레늄 비율은 65.67%로 높게 나타나, 폐배지 내 존재하는 상당량의 셀레늄이 버섯균사에 의해 첨가된 무기셀레늄이 유기셀레늄으로 전환되었다. 버섯배지의 살균으로 셀레늄 손실율은 약 18%로 나타났고, 버섯 체내 셀레늄 외관상 및 순수 축적율은 각각 14.81 및 10.14%였고, 외관상 축적율에 의해 계산된 셀레늄의 4.67%가 버섯체내 대사에 의해 공기 중으로 휘발되는 것으로 나타났다. 이상의 결과로부터 배지 내 무기셀레늄의 첨가는 버섯 내 셀레늄함량을 증가시켰고, 인체 내 유용한 유기셀레늄이 다량 존재하였으며, 폐배지에서도 상당량의 유기셀레늄이 존재하여 가축의 셀레늄공급원으로 충분한 가치가 있을 것으로 생각된다. 그리고 배지 내 셀레늄은 살균으로 인하여 상당량의 셀레늄이 손실되었고, 버섯체내 축적된 셀레늄은 대사과정에 의해 공기 중으로 휘발되는 것으로 나타나 상기의 폐배지를 가축에 사용 시 고려하여야 할 사항이다.

Cadmium Selenide Nanoparticles을 함유하는 액상실리콘 고무의 제조와 형광특성 (Preparation and Photoluminescence Characteristics of Liquid Silicone Rubber Containing Cadmium Selenide Nanoparticles)

  • Poly [(dimethylmethylvinyl)siloxane 공중합체(PMViS)를 phosphorus oxychloride $(POCl_3)$와 반응시켜 poly [(dimethylmethylvinyl) siloxane] phosphine oxides (PMViSPO)를 제조하였다. Cadmium selenide (CdSe)는 cadmium oxide(CdO), tetradecylphosphonic acid(TDPA), trioctylphosphine oxide(TOPO)를 $300^{\circ}C$에서 반응시키고 여기에 Se를 용해시킨 tributylphosphine(TBP)과 trioctylphosphine(TOP)을 가한 다음 $320^{\circ}C$에서 반응시켜 제조하였다. 또한 CdSe 제조 용액에 PMViSPO를 가하여 CdSe-SPO adduct를 제조하였다. 백금 촉매 존재 하에서 $\alpha,\omega-vinyl$ poly(dimethylsiloxane) (VPMS), HPMS, CdSe 또는 CdSe-SPO를 고속 교반기에 취하고 컴파운딩하여 CdSe 함유 액상실리콘 고무 composite (LSRC-1)와 CdSe-SPO 함유 LSR composite (LSRC-2)를 제조하였다. 제조한 LSR composites 내에 함유된 형광 물질인 CdSe nanoparticles의 분산형태를 측정하여 입자 크기가 $30\sim50nm$인 입자가 균일하게 분포되어 있음을 확인하였고 LSRC-2의 분산도가 LSRC-1보다 우수함을 확인하였다. 또한 CdSe 입자의 개수를 측정한 결과 동일한 면적에 대하여 166개와 202개로 보다 많은 개수의 CdSe가 LSRC-2에 함유됨을 알 수 있었다. LSR composites의 열적 특성을 측정한 결과 CdSe-SPO가 함유된 LSRC-2의 열안정성이 높게 나타났다.

Effects of Different Products and Levels of Selenium on Growth, Nutrient Digestibility and Selenium Retention of Growing-finishing Pigs

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of different selenium (Se) products (inorganic, organic A, organic B) added at two supplemental dietary Se levels (0.1 and 0.3 mg/kg) on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and Se retention in growing-finishing pigs. A $3{\times}2$ factorial arrangement of treatments was used in a RCB design, with a non-Se-fortified basal diet serving as the negative control. A total of 56 crossbred pigs (28 male and 28 female pigs) initially weighing an average $28.45{\pm}0.53kg$ BW were allotted to each treatment with four pigs per pen on the basis of sex and weight. Two pigs per pen were selected and bled from the anterior vena cava at 3- weekly intervals to analyze Se concentration. In the growing phase (0-6 weeks), increased ADFI was observed when pigs were fed organic Se compared to those fed the control diet or inorganic Se treatment (p<0.05). Pigs fed inorganic Se had a great ADFI than pigs fed organic Se (p<0.05) in the late finishing phase (7-12 weeks), although there were no differences in whole period ADFI between organic or inorganic Se products. During 12 weeks of the whole experimental period, serum Se concentration increased linearly when dietary Se level increased regardless of Se products (p<0.05). Both dietary Se source (p<0.05) and Se level (p<0.01) influenced the Se concentration of various pig tissues at end of this experiment and Se content was the highest in the kidney. For the determination of nutrient digestibility, a metabolic trial was conducted in 3 replicates in randomized complete block (RCB) design. A total of 21 barrows ($50.21{\pm}0.62kg$ of average BW) were used in the metabolic study. Selenium supplementation had no effect on nutrient digestibility except for crude protein. Crude protein digestibility increased with dietary supplementation of organic Se (A) compared with other forms of Se products or control diet (p<0.05). Consequently, this experiment indicated that dietary Se products and levels had no effect on growth performance of pigs. Se concentration in tissues and serum was increased in proportion to dietary Se level, especially when organic Se was provided. Although pigs were fed organic forms of Se, bioavailability of organic forms varied among products, consequently bioactivity of organic products to the animals should be evaluated before practical application in animal feed.
