For the saving of energy consumption, it is necessary that the high efficient energy transfer machine. We found the optimum operating condition of screw water chiller during this performance test. The specifications of compressor for this performance test are as follows. Built-in volume ratio; Vi=2.4, using refrigerant; HCFC-22, nominal motor output; 60kW(80Hp). We found the test results on water cooled chiller standard test condition that the evaporating capacity is increased 8% maximum and 5.6% under same operating condition. and COP is increased 11 % max. and 8% under same operating condition with change of the evaporating inlet/outlet condition. For the results of these test, we can estimate the optimum operating condition of water cooled type screw chiller.

Screw compressor chillers are widely used in refrigeration for capacity over 30 RT. In general, chillers operate under part-load conditions during most of the time. Therefore, information on the characteristics of part-load is very important for better chiller performance and energy economy. In this study, performance tests of screw chiller with economizer using R22 and R407C under part-load conditions have been performed for various secondary fluid temperatures. Adoption of an economizer system increased the cooling capacity and improved COP except for lower part-load condition when economizer volume ratio is 1.01. For the same cooling capacity condition at part-load, COP's of both non-economizer and economizer system showed similar values.
An experimental study on the performance enhancement of a screw-compressor-type chiller with 100kW of nominal cooling capacity has been carried out. Performance test facility was developed to investigate the effects of a partial modification from the existing chiller on the performance. By replacing the existing shell-and -tube heat exchangers with plate heat exchangers, the cooling capacity is increased by 15~18% and the COP is also increased by 19~21% depending on the operation temperature range. Charging mixed refrigerant R22/R142b(80 : 20) instead of R22 into the chiller with plate heat exchangers improves the cooling capacity by 4% and the COP very largely by 30%. Each contribution of the plate evaporator, plate condenser, and mixed refrigerant to the performance enhancement is examined by analyzing the refrigeration cycle and the heat transfer processes. It is also shown that the chiller performance can be improved by adapting 2-stage-compression cycle using an economizer.

A comparative analysis of an ice storage system has been performed on the operation cost for the four control strategies, i.e., chiller priority and chiller downstream, chiller priority and chiller upstream, storage priority and chiller upstream, storage priority and chiller downstream. Main components of the ice storage system are an ice-on-coil storage tank and a screw compressor chiller. With the simulation program, the operation cost has been evaluated from the economics of an ice storage system. It is found that the operation cost of the ice storage system is strongly dependent on the control strategy, i.e., chiller priority or storage priority, but less affected by the arrangement method, i.e., chiller upstream or chiller downstream. In case of the maximum load day, the control strategy with chiller priority and chiller upstream is supposed to obtain the reduction of operation cost. However, it is found that the control strategy with storage priority and chiller downstream is the best economical operation for most summer seasons except the maximum load day.
Screw compressor type chiller is widely used in refrigeration for capacity over 30 RT. To enhance the chiller performance, an economizer which increases the cooling capacity and COP can be adopted. In this study the performance of an economizer is studied by using a simulation program. Simulation results are compared with experiment data to verify the validation of a simulation program. Maximum economizer injection pressure is estimated and the performance of an economizer for various evaporation and condensation temperatures is calculated. From the results, the performance enhancement of an economizer by using R22 and R407C is compared.
Ice storage systems are used to shift the peak load in day time into night time in summer. This paper describes a system simulation of partial ice storage system composed of an encapsulated ice storage tank, a screw compressor chiller, a heat exchanger, and a brine pump. For the system simulation, a one-dimensional model of ice storage tank is developed and validated by comparison with the performance data from measurements of an ice storage tank installed at a building. The control strategies considered in this study are chiller priority and storage priority being used commercially. The system is simulated with design cooling load of 600 RT peak load in design day and with off-design day cooling load, and the electric energy costs of the two control strategies for the same system size are compared. As a result of calculation, the energy consumption in a week for storage priority is higher than that for chiller priority control. However due to lower cost of night electric charge rate, energy cost for storage priority control is lower than chiller priority.
For a central cooling system of a medical facility composed of absorption chiller and screw chiller, the study was conducted on how to minimize the energy cost. In consideration of the energy cost, the optimal operation method in which the operation method of the heat source is changed according to the size of the cooling load was derived through simulation analysis. When applying the optimal operation method, the indoor environment, energy consumption, and energy cost were analyzed and compared with the reference operation method.
A dynamic simulation program may be used for the development of effective control algorithms for the ice storage cooling system. Simplified effective dynamic models for an ice-on-coil type storage tank, a screw chiller, a water-to-air heat exchanger, three way valves, pipes, pumps, temperature sensors, and controllers were developed. And a dynamic simulation program for the ice storage cooling system was developed by using these dynamic models. Control algorithms for the full storage system were also selected and analyzed in order to show the effectiveness of these models. From the simulation results, it may be concluded that the simulation program developed in this study can be effectively used for the development of improved control algorithms for the ice storage cooling system.
