Electrical Impedance Tomography as a Primary Screening Technique for Breast Cancer Detection

  • Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a new non-invasive, mobile screening method which does not use ionizing radiation to the human breast. It is based on the theory that cancer cells display altered local dielectric properties, thus demonstrating measurably higher conductivity values. This article reviews the utilisation of EIT in breast cancer detection. It could be used as an adjunct to mammography and ultrasonography for breast cancer screening.

  • Protein Arginine Methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5), a significant member of the PRMT family, is a promising anticancer target. In this study, novel small compounds that act against the PRMT5 target are found by combining virtual screening with ChEMBL database medicines and Density Functional Theory. The ChEMBL database compounds were screened to retrieve the hit molecules, which further subjected for DFT analysis. Finally we have evaluated that ChEMBL- approved drugs such as Lifitegrast, Abiraterone acetate and Solifenacin may be potential inhibitors for PRMT5.

Factors Influencing Cancer Rescreening Intention of Korean Elderly (암검진 수검 노인의 재수검의도에 미치는 요인)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to survey the cancer screening status of Korean elderly and to analyze factors influencing cancer rescreening intention. Methods: Participants were 262 elderly aged 65 or older who visited medical examination center at D University hospital located in D city. Data were collected from June 1 to July 31, 2012 using a structured questionnaire which included health behavior and cancer screening related characteristics, theory of planned behavior variables, EQ-5D, and cancer screening satisfaction. The data were analyzed by SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Results: Factors influencing elderly's cancer rescreening intention were 'satisfaction about the cancer screening', 'attitude toward cancer rescreening behavior', 'subjective norm toward cancer rescreening behavior', and 'previous experience with cancer screening in the past 2 years'. Cancer rescreening intention was higher in participants with satisfied experience of cancer screening, more positive in attitude and higher in subjective norm toward cancer rescreening. Cancer rescreening intention was lower when participants were not screened for cancer in the past 2 years. Conclusion: The study results indicate that customized interventions based on influential factors such as subjective norm, attitude toward cancer screening, and cancer screening satisfaction are necessary in order to promote the consistent cancer screening of Korean elderly.

Screening Tool for Anxiety Disorders: Development and Validation of the Korean Anxiety Screening Assessment

  • Objective This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Korean Anxiety Screening Assessment (K-ANX) developed for screening anxiety disorders. Methods Data from 613 participants were analyzed. The K-ANX was evaluated for reliability using Cronbach's alpha, item-total correlation, and test information curve, and for validity using focus group interviews, factor analysis, correlational analysis, and item characteristics based on item response theory (IRT). The diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of the K-ANX were compared with those of the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale (GAD-7). Results The K-ANX showed excellent internal consistency (${\alpha}=0.97$) and item-total coefficients (0.92-0.97), and a one-factor structure was suggested. All items were highly correlated with the total scores of the BAI, GAD-7, and Penn State Worry Questionnaire. IRT analysis indicated the K-ANX was most informative as a screening tool for anxiety disorders at the range between 0.8 and 1.6 (i.e., top 21.2 to 5.5 percentiles). Higher sensitivity (0.795) and specificity (0.937) for identifying anxiety disorders were observed in the K-ANX compared to the BAI and GAD-7. Conclusion The K-ANX is a reliable and valid measure to screen anxiety disorders in a Korean sample, with greater sensitivity and specificity than current measures of anxiety symptoms.

A Study on the Determination of the Screening Factors for the Tunnel and the Overbridge of the Electric Railway (전기철도 터널 및 고가 구조물의 차폐계수 산정에 대한 연구)

  • For the screening factor of the tunnel and overbridge structure in the electrified railway, the ITU-T regulation denotes only a theoretical estimation method, and the actual numeric values are notified differently by the official announcement of each nations. In this study, the factors which can affect the screening factor are investigated and analysed by FEM and a suitable calculation method based on multi-conductor line theory for the current pre-estimation formula for the induction noise voltage in the national notice is presented. The case studies are performed using the real data of the tunnel and the overbridge of the electrified railway, and a satisfactory formula for the determining of screening factor is derived.

Factors Affecting Breast Self-examination Behavior Among Female Healthcare Workers in Iran: The Role of Social Support Theory

  • Objectives: In women, breast cancer is the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death. Screening tests are the basis for early diagnosis. In Iranian women, the mortality rate of breast cancer is high due to insufficient screening examinations and delayed visits for care. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the factors affecting breast self-examinations among Iranian women employed in medical careers. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 501 women working in the medical professions at Hamadan University of Medical Sciences in western Iran in 2018. The subjects were selected by stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a researcher-developed, self-report questionnaire that contained demographic information and questions based on protection motivation theory and social support theory. Descriptive data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 23 and model fitting with PLS version 2. Results: The mean age of the participants was $37.1{\pm}8.3years$, and most of the women (80.4%) were married. Most women had a bachelor's degree (67.5%). The findings of this study showed that the coping appraisal construct was a predictor of protection motivation (${\beta}=0.380$, p<0.05), and protection motivation (${\beta}=0.604$, p<0.05) was a predictor of breast self-examination behavior. Additionally, social support theory (${\beta}=0.202$, p<0.05) had a significant positive effect on breast self-examination behavior. Conclusions: The frequency of practicing self-examinations among women employees in the medical sector was low; considering the influence of social support as a factor promoting screening, it is necessary to pay attention to influential people in women's lives when designing educational interventions.

Electronic Risk Assessment System as an Appropriate Tool for the Prevention of Cancer: a Qualitative Study

  • Background: Decision making modalities for screening for many cancer conditions and different stages have become increasingly complex. Computer-based risk assessment systems facilitate scheduling and decision making and support the delivery of cancer screening services. The aim of this article was to survey electronic risk assessment system as an appropriate tool for the prevention of cancer. Materials and Methods: A qualitative design was used involving 21 face-to-face interviews. Interviewing involved asking questions and getting answers from exclusive managers of cancer screening. Of the participants 6 were female and 15 were male, and ages ranged from 32 to 78 years. The study was based on a grounded theory approach and the tool was a semi-structured interview. Results: Researchers studied 5 dimensions, comprising electronic guideline standards of colorectal cancer screening, work flow of clinical and genetic activities, pathways of colorectal cancer screening and functionality of computer based guidelines and barriers. Electronic guideline standards of colorectal cancer screening were described in the s3 categories of content standard, telecommunications and technical standards and nomenclature and classification standards. According to the participations' views, workflow and genetic pathways of colorectal cancer screening were identified. Conclusions: The study demonstrated an effective role of computer-guided consultation for screening management. Electronic based systems facilitate real-time decision making during a clinical interaction. Electronic pathways have been applied for clinical and genetic decision support, workflow management, update recommendation and resource estimates. A suitable technical and clinical infrastructure is an integral part of clinical practice guidline of screening. As a conclusion, it is recommended to consider the necessity of architecture assessment and also integration standards.

The Wage Premium of English Skills in the Korean Labor Market (우리나라 노동시장에서 영어 실력의 프리미엄)

  • In this paper, we estimate the wage premium of English skills in the Korean labor market using Korean Labor and Income Panel Study(KLIPS) data. In a simple OLS model, we find that people with some English skills in terms of self evaluation or job requirement earn 30% more than those who do not have English skills. But in a small sample of relatively young people, higher English lest scores do not raise earnings. When we add SAT scores in the wage equation, there is no wage premium of English skills, and in the IV estimation, we find no "English premium". These results consistently imply that while there is a large wage premium of English skills in the Korean labor market, it reflects unobservable ability for the most part. Meanwhile some of the regression results favor human capital theory over screening theory as an explanation of the nature of the wage premium of English skills.

Korean Immigrant Women's Meanings of Breast, Breast Cancer, and Breast Cancer Screenings

  • Purpose. Koreans are one of the fastest growing Asian populations in the U.S. since 1960s. In Korean immigrant women (KIW), breast cancer was reported as the most frequently diagnosed cancer. However, their screening rates for breast cancer are lower than national guidelines; it is assumed that underlying cultural schemas of breast, breast cancer, and its screening modalities exist and need to be studied. This study was aimed to investigate cultural meanings of breast, breast cancer, and breast cancer screenings in KIW. Methods. Using cultural models theory from cognitive anthropology, naturalistic qualitative methodology was utilized. Three focus group interviews with fifteen KIW were conducted. Thematic analysis with constant comparison technique was performed eliciting units of meaning, categories, and themes. Results. The cultural schema of the meaning of breast is 'mother who is breast-feeding her baby,' with two themes of 'balance in size,' and 'shyness.' Regarding breast cancer, three themes, i.e., 'indifference,' 'fear,' and 'uncertainty' are emerged. 'Lack of information about screening modalities' is the overarching schema with reference to breast cancer screenings. Conclusions. The findings of this study demonstrate unique cultural models of KIW related to breast cancer and its screenings, which are critical to understand and penetrate their barriers to breast cancer screening.

The Impact of Artificial Intelligence Adoption in Candidates Screening and Job Interview on Intentions to Apply (채용 전형에서 인공지능 기술 도입이 입사 지원의도에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose Despite the recent increase in the use of selection tools using artificial intelligence (AI), far less is known about the effectiveness of them in recruitment and selection research. Design/methodology/approach This paper tests the impact of AI-based initial screening and interview on intentions to apply. We also examine the moderating role of individual difference (i.e., reliability on technology) in the relationship. Findings Using policy-capturing with undergraduate students at a large university in South Korea, this study showed that AI-based interview has a negative effect on intentions to apply, where AI-based initial screening has no effect. These results suggest that applicants may have a negative feeling of AI-based interview, but they may not AI-based initial screening. In other words, AI-based interview can reduce application rates, but AI-based screening not. Results also indicated that the relationship between AI-based initial screening and intentions to apply is moderated by the level of applicant's reliability on technology. Specifically, respondents with high levels of reliability are more likely than those with low levels of reliability to apply for firms using AI-based initial screening. However, the moderating role of reliability was not significant in the relationship between the AI interview and the applying intention. Employing uncertainty reduction theory, this study indicated that the relationship between AI-based selection tools and intentions to apply is dynamic, suggesting that organizations should carefully manage their AI-based selection techniques throughout the recruitment and selection process.
