Chromium plating is a common surface treatment technique extensively applied in industry due its excellent properties which include substantial hardness, abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance, surface color, and luster. In this study, the effect of $MoS_2$ particles of the composite coating was investigated. To improve the lubrication of mold, $Cr-P-C/MoS_2$ composite plating was studied by varying the $MoS_2$ content. The current efficiency of the composite plating incorporated $MoS_2$ particles was increased at $MoS_2$ contents of 0.5 and 1.0 g/l due to the incorporation of fine particles. On the other hand, when the content of $MoS_2$ is 1.0 g/l or more, the current efficiency is lowered due to an increase in impact on the cathode surface. In order to evaluate the mechanical properties of Scratch test were conducted. Scratch test confirmed the lubricity and abrasion resistance characteristics revealed that the composite plating with added $MoS_2$ had relatively low surface roughness and uniform surface modification to improve its properties.
The purpose of this study was to observe the changes of the elemental transmission and bond strength between the metal and porcelain according to various kinds of ion beam mixing method. ion beam mixing of $meta1/SiO_2$ (silica), $meta1/Al_2O_3$(alumina) interfaces causes reactions when the $Ar^+$ was implanted into bilayer thin films using a 100KeV accelerator which was designed and constructed for this study. A vacuum evaporator used in the $10^{-5}-10^{-6}$ Torr vacuum states for the evaporation. For this study, three kinds of porcelain metal selected, -precious, semiprecious, and non-precious. Silica and alumina were deposited to the metal by the vacuum evaporator, separately. One group was treated by two kinds of dose of the ion beam mixing $(1\times10^{16}ions/cm^2,\;5\times10^{15}ions/cm^2)$, and the other group was not mixed, and analyzed the effects of ion beam mixing. The analyses of bond strength, elemental transmissions were performed by the electron spectroscopy of chemical analysis (ESCA), light and scanning electron microscope, scratch test, and micro Vickers hardness tests. The finding led to the following conclusions. 1. In the scanning electron and light microscopic views, ion beam mixed specimens showed the ion beam mixed indentation. 2. In the micro Vickers hardness and scratch tests, ion beam mixed specimens showed higher strength than that of non mixed specimens, however, nonprecious metal showed a little change in the bond strength between mixed and non mixed specimens. 3. In the scratch test, ion beam mixed specimens showed higher shear strength than that of non treated specimens at the precious and semiprecious groups. 4. In the ESCA analysis, Au-O and Au-Si compounds were formed and transmission of the Au peak was found ion beam mixed $SiO_2/Au$ specimen, simultaneously, in the higher and lower bonded areas, and ion beam mixed $SiO_2/Ni-Cr$ specimen, oxygen, that was transmitted from $SiO_2\;to\;SiO_2/Ni-Cr$ interface combined with 12% of Ni at the interface.

CrN/AlN multilayer coatings with various bilayer periods in the range of 1.8 to 7.4 nm were synthesized using a closed-field unbalanced magnetron sputtering method. Their crystalline structure, chemical compositions and mechanical properties have been investigated with Auger electron spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, atomic force microscopy, nanoindentation, scratch tests. The properties of the multilayer coatings varied strongly depending upon the magnitude of the bilayer period. The multilayer coating with a bilayer period of 1.8 nm showed the maximum hardness and an elastic modulus of approximately 37.6 and 417 GPa, respectively, which was 1.54 times higher than the hardness predicted by the rule of mixture from the CrN and AlN coatings. The hardness of the multilayer coating increased as the bilayer period decreased, i.e. as the rotation speed increased. The Hall-Petch type relationship, hardness being related to (1/periodicity)$^{-1/2}$, suggested by Lehoczky was confirmed for the CrN/AlN multilayer coatings with bilayer period close to the 5-10 nm range. With decreasing bilayer period, the surface morphology of the films became rougher and the critical load of films for adhesion strength gradually decreased.
In PECVD(Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) process, titanium nitride is thin and its adhesion is poor for the protective coatings. Therefore it has been studied that intermediate layer forms between substrate and TiN thin film. Using R.F. plasma nitriding, nitride layer was first formed, then TiN thin film coated by PECVD. The chemical composition of the coatings has been characterized using AES, EDS and their crystallographic structure by means of XRD. Mechanical properties such as microhardness and film adhesion have also been determined by vickers hardness test, scratch test and indentation test. As a result, there was no difference in chemical composition and structure between the TiN deposition only and the composite of TiN deposition on nitrided steel. It was found that nitrided substrate increased the hardness of TiN coatings and was beneficial in preventing the plastic deformation in the substrate. Therefore the effective load bearing capacity of the TiN coatings on nitrided steel was increased and their adhesion was improved as well. According to the results of this study, the processes that lead to the formation of composite layers characterized by good working properties, i.e., high microhardness, adhesion and resistance to deformation.

Over the past years, a large number of acrylate polymers have been developed and the overcoat thin layer containing acrylate polymers have been used for TFT-LCD color filter. As forming thin layer using acrylate polymers, the existing acrylate polymers have some problems such as low hardness by low Tg temperature, coating uniformity and solubility in organic solvent. To solve these problems, we synthesized new polymer(Scheme.), containing olefin monomer, which has high Tg temperature, good coating uniformity and good solubility in organic solvent. The overcoat thin layer containing new polymer resulted in good coating uniformity, stain, spot, scratch, heat resistance, DOP(Degree Of Planarization) on RGB glass, transparency, hardness, adhesion, anti-chemicals(anti-acid, anti-base, anti-organic solvent), insulation and anti-humidity. Scheme. The structure of new polymer X = Olefin monomer contains ketone, ester, hydroxy, ether, halogen, nitrile, alkoxy, phenyl functional group $R_1$ and $R_2$= H or $CH_3$. The wear characteristics and wear mechanisms in TiN coating deposited on high speed steel and alloy tool steel by ion plating were investigated. Pin on V-block wear tester was used for a wear test method. The specimen was composed of three kinds of high speed steel and alloy tool steel which had different hardness by changing the heat treating condition. Three kinds of coating thickness were also applied to each specimen. Microscopic observation of worn surfaces was made by SEM. The scratch test of coating surface by the ion plating showed that critical load to break the coating interface was greater than 50N. The critical load increased with both substrate hardness and coating thickness. The wear resistance of TiN coated high speed steel became 10 times greater than that of non-coated ones. SEM observation showed that leading edge of contact was compressive and trailing edge was under maximum tensile stress and then surface cracking broke out perpendicular to sliding direction.
This study investigates the preparation of anti-reflective (AR) coating film to improve the efficiency of solar cell. The AR coating film was successfully obtained by dip-coating with AR coatings prepared by sol-gel method. Fluoroalkylsilane was additionally introduced into the coatings to give the self-cleaning effect of AR coating film. We performed the abrasion test, pencil scratch hardness test and cross-cut test to identify the mechanical strength of AR coating film. As the results, the transmittance of AR coating films with 9.07, 18.13 and 27.20 of IPA/MTMS molar ratios were 93.1, 93.6 and 95.3%, respectively. The water contact angle and transmittance of AR coating film increased by the introduction of hydrophobicity. The prepared AR coating film shows the high level of abrasion, hardness and adhesion. The IPA/MTMS molar ratio of 27.20 and the withdrawing speed range of 0.20 ~ 0.28cm/sec are the optimal coating condition in terms of the transmittance and mechanical strength of AR coating film.

($Ti_{1-x}$$Cr_{x}$ )N coatings were deposited by an ion-plating method in a reactor with two separate metal sources, Ti and Cr. Ti was evaporated using an electron beam, while Cr evaporation was carried out by resistant heating. The Ti and Cr concentrations in the coatings were controlled by the Ti and Cr evaporation ratio. The coating hardness increased with increasing the Cr content(x) and showed a maximum value of 6,000 HK at around x=0.8. The critical load of the coatings, measured by the scratch test, was around 30 N. The wear resistance properties of the ($Ti_{1-x}$$Cr_{ x}$)N coatings were evaluated using a CSEM pin-on-disk type tribometer. A Cr-steel ball as well as a SiC ball, which had hardness values of 590 HK and 2,600 HK respectively, were used as the pin. After the wear test, the surface morphology, roughness and the concentration of the coatings were investigated, with the main focus being on the effect of wear debris and the transferred layer on the wear behavior.
Polyurethane modified acrylate $(PUA)/SiO_2$ hybrid films were prepared by ultraviolet curing and their surface properties were investigated by hardness and adhesion test. The films were examined by the manipulation of mole-ratio of organic to inorganic components. Under the silica content controlled, highly desirable films were achieved and scratch resistance and hardness property of film were also enhanced, which indicates that the crosslinked silica particles are homogeneously dispersed within PUA film.
