Purpose: This study was performed to investigate processability of the dental zirconia block. Most of the CAD/CAM zirconia restorations utilize the partially sintered blocks, which are sintered at a temperature lower than $1100^{\circ}C$. Methods: Partially sintered zirconia samples were prepared $40{\times}30{\times}10mm$ and surface treatment by #2000 sandpaper. Scratch hardness was determined by the procedure of ASTM G171-03 using a scratch hardness tester(KS TECH, Korea) equipped with a real time load detector to measure tangential force during scratching. The scratch rate was 30 mm/min. Results: Scratch hardness(Hs) increases steeply with increase in the loads. The highest Hs was sampl 1.42 GPa and lowest was sample 0.42 GPa. Conclusion : The machinability of partially sintered CAD/CAM zirconia blocks can be optivized by manipulation of Hs.
Nano-scratch tests were performed on PMMA thin films spin-coated on a Si substrate using an atomic force microscopy (AFM) with loads ranging form 10nN to 100nN. At low loads, a ridge pattern was formed on the PMMA thin film surface. No wear particles were observed during the pattern-forming mild wear. At high loads, severe wear by plowing occurred, accompanied by wear particles. The film with the highest hardness showed the highest wear resistance. Friction force generated during the scratching was measured, which was closely related with surface deformation of the film. A simple empirical equation to deduce scratch hardness of the film from a linear fixed-distance scratch test was proposed, and scratching-speed dependency of the scratch hardness was displayed.
Indentation, scratch and sliding tests were carried out in this paper to predict the critical loads and the failure modes of TiN-coated specimen. The test specimens were S20C steels with three different substrate hardness, roughness and coating thickness. The scratch test shows that the coating thickness has more dominant effect on the critical load of coated disk than the hardness and the roughness. Using the percent contact load, the ratio of sliding load to the critical scratch load, the cycles to failure are measured to predict the wear-life of TiN film. On the wear-life diagram the percent loads and the cycle to failure show the good linear relation on semi-log coordinate. With decreasing loads, the diagram shows the wear-limit at which the coated disk survives more than 4000 cycles.

The frictional behaviors of Cermets/Cr-Ceramics and Cu-Al coatings of piston ring were investigated. Friction tests were carried out by pin-on-disk test and materials properties of coating layer were analyzed by nano indentation tester. Higher friction coefficient was obtained at harder coating with rougher surface. In case of hard-coating, the scratch depth, width and pile-up height had close relationship with indentation hardness. So the scratch width, depth and pile-up height increases with decreasing friction coefficient. But in case of soft-coating, the friction coefficients are strongly dependent on the morphological characteristics after nano scratching more than indentation hardness.
The frictional behaviors of Cermets/Cr-Ceramics and Cu-Al coatings of piston ring were investigated. Friction tests were carried out by pin-on-disk test and materials properties of coating layer were analyzed by nano indentation tester. The effect of surface roughness of cylinder liner on the friction coefficient was analyzed. This study provided tribological data of hard and soft piston ring coatings against cylinder liner. The surface roughness does exert an influence on the average friction coefficient, with smoother surfaces generally yielding lower friction coefficients. In case of hard-coating, the scratch depth, width and pile-up height had close relationship with hardness. So the scratch width, depth and pile-up height increases with decreasing friction coefficient. But in case of soft-coating, the friction coefficients are strongly dependent on the morphological characteristics such as, scratch depth, width, pile-up height and elastic modulus.

In this study, rapid cooling method was proposed to improve the anti-scratch performance of anti-reflection film fabricated by nanoimprint lithography. Effects of cooling time on the mechanical properties and optical properties were evaluated. Pencil hardness measurements showed that anti-scratch performance enhanced as the cooling time increased while characterization on the optical property showed that reflectance on scratch increased as the cooling time increased. Therefore, it was concluded that the anti-scratch performance and optical properties are highly influenced by the cooling time. The observed results explained in terms of residual stress and free volume in polymeric materials.

In the modern days, a galvannealed sheet steel (GA) instead of a cold rolled steel sheet has been widely used as an alternative to extend the life of automotive body. Accordingly, the mechanical properties of GA for automobiles were taken into account and studied by examining their variation with annealing temperature. To clarify the effect of surface features on the mechanical and frictional properties of GA, the several tests such as nanoindentation, Vickers hardness and nano scratch test were executed. The frictional characteristics of coating layers of GA were examined through nano scratch test in this study. The friction coefficient of coating layers on the surface was obtained from the nano scratch. The variation of friction coefficient versus velocity and pressure was taken into consideration in this paper. Hardness and elastic modulus of coating layer were increased as increasing annealing temperature.

This study investigated the effect of T6 heat treatment on the microstructure and scratch wear behavior of hypoeutectic Al-12wt.%Si alloy manufactured by extrusion. Microstructural observation identified spherical eutectic Si phases before and after the heat treatment of alloys (F, T6). Phase analysis confirmed Al matrix and Si phase as well as Al2Cu and Al3Ni, Mg2Si in both alloys. In particular, Al2Cu was finer and more evenly distributed in T6 alloy. This resulted in Vickers hardness of T6 alloy that was 2.3 times greater compared to F alloy. The scratch wear test was conducted using constant load scratch test (CLST) mode and multi-pass scratch test (MPST) mode. The scratch coefficient and worn out volume obtained by such were used to evaluate wear properties before and after heat treatment. In the case of T6 alloy, its scratch coefficient was lower than F alloy in all load ranges. After 15 repeated tests to measure worn out volume, F alloy and T6 alloy measured 1.2×10-1 mm3 and 7.8×10-2 mm3, respectively. In other words, the wear resistance of T6 alloy were confirmed to be better than those of F alloy. In addition, this study attempted to identify the microstructural factors that contribute to the better scratch wear resistance of T6 alloy and wear mechanism from surface and cross-section observations after the wear tests.

To apply the wear resistant steel plate for heavy duty vehicle, the wear characterisms of various kinds of commercial steel plates were invesigated by dry sand/rubber wheel tester which was tested under scratch abrasion mode. The wear tested pnaterials were boron steels which were manufactured by thereto machanical control process (TMCP) in order to achieve higher hardness. As the result of the test, wear resistance of steel plate increases with the hardness and carbon content. The wear loss of wear resistance steel plate (Hv440) is a half times than tinat of SWS490A (Hv160) steel plate in dry sand-rubber wheel test and the result in field test is similar to this dry sand/rubber wheel test result. Therefore, dry sand/rubber wheel tester can be used to predict the scratch abrasion life of the parts for heavy duty vehicle.

LCD panels are used widely in all sorts of devices. Since glass is the main material used to make the panels, scratch resistance is an important issue in acquiring high quality LCD panels. In this work the wear behaviors of three types of commercially available LCD panel glasses were investigated. A pin-on-reciprocating tribotester was used to perform the wear tests using the glass specimens against a stainless steel ball. The hardness of the specimens was initially obtained. It was shown that the wear amount varied with respect to the applied load as well as the type of glass. The wear pattern of the glass specimen was also characterized using confocal microscopy. It is expected that the results of this work will aid in improving the tribological properties of LCD panel glass.
