In preclinical positron emisson tomography(PET), spatial resolution degradation occurs outside the field of view(FOV). To solve this problem, a depth of interaction(DOI) detector was developed that measures the position where gamma rays and the scintillator interact. There are a method in which a scintillation pixel array is composed of multiple layers, a method in which photosensors are arranged at both ends of a single layer, a method in which a scintillation pixel array is constituted in several layers and a photosensor is arranged in each layer. In this study, a new type of DOI detector was designed by analyzing the characteristics of the previously developed detectors. In the two-layer detector, different sizes of scintillation pixels were used for each layer, and the array size was configured differently. When configured in this form, the positions of the scintillation pixels for each layer are arranged to be shifted from each other, so that they are imaged at different positions in a flood image. DETECT2000 simulation was performed to confirm the possibility of measuring the depth of interaction of the designed detector. A flood image was reconstructed from a light signal acquired by a gamma-ray event generated at the center of each scintillation pixel. As a result, it was confirmed that all scintillation pixels for each layer were separated from the reconstructed flood image and imaged to measure the interaction depth. When this detector is applied to preclinical PET, it is considered that excellent images can be obtained by improving spatial resolution.
The purpose of this comprehensive research is to observe the impact of scintillator crystal type on entire detection process. For this aim, MCNPX (version 2.6.0) is used for designing of a physical plastic scintillation detector available in our laboratory. The modelled detector structure is validated using previous studies in the literature. Next, different types of plastic scintillation crystals were assessed in the same geometry. Several fundamental detector properties are determined for six different plastic scintillation crystals. Additionally, the deposited energy quantities were computed using the MCNPX code. Although six scintillation crystals have comparable compositions, the findings clearly indicate that the crystal composed of PVT 80% + PPO 20% has superior counting and detecting characteristics when compared to the other crystals investigated. Moreover, it is observed that the highest deposited energy amount, which is a result of the highest collision number in the crystal volume, corresponds to a PVT 80% + PPO 20% crystal. Despite the fact that plastic detector crystals have similar chemical structures, this study found that performing advanced Monte Carlo simulations on the detection discrepancies within the structures can aid in the development of the most effective spectroscopy procedures by ensuring maximum efficiency prior to and during use.
We fabricated a 15 m long position-sensitive plastic scintillation optical fiber (PSOF) detector consisting of a PSOF, two photomultiplier tubes, four fast amplifiers, and a digitizer. A single PSOF was used as a sensing part to estimate the gamma-ray source position, and 137Cs, an uncollimated solid-disk-type radioactive isotope, was used as a gamma-ray emitter. To improve the sensitivity, accuracy, and measurement time of a PSOF detector compared to those of previous studies, the performance of the amplifier was optimized, and the digital signal processing (DSP) was newly designed in this study. Moreover, we could measure very low dose rates of gamma-rays with high sensitivity and accuracy in a very short time using our proposed PSOF detector. The results of this study indicate that it is possible to accurately and quickly locate the position of a very low dose rate gamma-ray source in a wide range of contaminated areas using the proposed position-sensitive PSOF detector.
The detector of the positron emission tomography (PET) is composed using a plurality of scintillation pixels and photo sensors. The use of multiple photo sensors increases cost and complicates signal processing. In this study, a detector with reduced cost and simple signal processing was designed using a small number of photo sensors. A scintillation pixel and a small number of photo sensors were used, and a optical guide was used to deliver light to all the photo sensors. A reflector is applied to the scintillation pixel and the optical guide to transmit the maximum amount of light to the photo sensor. A diffuse reflector and a specular reflector were used for the reflector, and a flood image was obtained by applying different thicknesses of the optical guide. An optimal combination was selected through comparative analysis of the acquired flood images. As a result, when specular reflectors were used for both the scintillation pixel and the optical guide, excellent flood images were obtained from optical guides of all thicknesses. For the optical guide, the optimal image was obtained when using a 3 mm thickness in consideration of the size of the image and the analysis of the point where the image of the scintillation pixel was formed.
Since preclinical positron emission tomography imaging is performed on small animals that are very small compared to the human body, a detector with excellent spatial resolution is required. For this purpose, a system was constructed using a detector using small scintillation pixels. Since the size of the currently developed and used photosensors is limited, excellent spatial resolution can be obtained when the minimum scintillation pixel and maximum array are used. In this study, the size of the photosensor is fixed and various scintillation pixel arrays are configured to match the size of the scintillation pixels, so that no overlap occurs in the flood image and the maximum scintillation pixel array in which all scintillation pixels are distinguished. For this purpose, DETECT2000, which can simulate a detector module composed of a scintillator and an photosensor, was used. A photosensor consisting of a 4 × 4 array of 3 mm × 3 mm pixels was used, and the scintillation pixel array was configured from 8 × 8 to 13 × 13, and simulations were performed. A flood image was constructed using the data obtained from the photosensor pixel, and the maximum scintillation pixel array that does not overlap the image was found through the flood image and the profile. As a result, the size of the scintillation pixel array in which all scintillation pixels are imaged without overlapping each other in the flood image was 11 × 11.
A detector using a small number of photosensors was designed, and the position of a scintillation pixel that interacted with gamma rays through a maximum likelihood position estimation(MLPE) was measured as a digital position. For this purpose, simulation was performed using DETECT2000, which can simulate the movement of light within the scintillator, and the accuracy of position measurement was evaluated. A detector was configured using a 6 × 6 scintillation pixel array and 4 photosensors, and a gamma ray event was generated at the center of each scintillation pixel to create a look-up table through the ratio of acquired light. The gamma-ray event generated at the new position was applied as the input value of the MLPE, and the positiion of the scintillation pixel was converted into a digital positiion after comparison with the look-up table. All scintillation pixels were evaluated, and as a result, a high accuracy of 99.1% was obtained. When this method is applied to the currently usesd system, it is concidered that the process of determining the position of the scintillation pixel will be simplified.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the reflector, surface treatment, and length of scintillation crystals on the performance of a time-of-flight and depth-of-interaction (TOF-DOI) PET detector with a dual-ended readout and to determine the best reflector and surface treatment. Various types of crystal arrays with three different reflectors (ESR, BaSO4, and Toray), three different lateral surface treatments (all-polished (AP), all-roughened (AR), and partially roughened (PR, three sides polished, and one side roughened)), and two different lengths (20 and 15 mm) were fabricated. The highest light collection efficiency and best energy resolution were achieved using a crystal with a diffuse reflector (BaSO4 for AP and Toray for AR). In contrast, the best coincidence timing resolution (CTR) was achieved using an AR crystal with a specular reflector (ESR). The best DOI resolution was achieved using an AR crystal with BaSO4. Moreover, the results measured with the 20 mm long crystals were similar to those measured with the 15 mm long crystals. Therefore, we concluded that the dual-ended readout PET detector employing the crystal with AR lateral surface treatment and ESR was a good candidate for TOF-DOI PET because it provided excellent CTR and adequate DOI resolution.

As a feasibility study on development of a gamma imaging probe, we developed a scintillating film-based gamma imaging detector that can obtain scintillation images with information of gamma-ray distribution. The scintillating film-based gamma imaging detector was composed of a sensing probe, an image intensifier, and a beam profiler. To detect and transmit scintillation image, the sensing probe was fabricated by coupling a scintillating film, a fiber-optic image conduit, and a fiber-optic taper, consecutively. First, the optical images of USAF 1951 resolution target were obtained and then, modulation transfer function values were calculated to test the image quality of the sensing probe. Second, we measured the scintillation images according to the activity of the 137Cs and the distance between the surface of 137Cs and the distal-end of sensing probe. Finally, the intensities of scintillating light as functions of the activity and the distance were evaluated from the region of interest in the scintillation image. From the results of this study, it is expected that a fiber-optic gamma imaging detector can be developed to detect gamma-rays emitted from radiopharmaceuticals during radioimmunoguided surgery.
In this paper, we designed the stack monitoring system with improved performance. To block the incoming pulse noise to the amplifier, shield and the power supply impedance are reduced and the power circuit is isolated. The control unit is developed with variable high voltage, adaptive gain, offset and threshold in order to match the scintillation detector characteristic to the apparatus. 300-1500V variable high voltage power circuit is configured applicable to various scintillation detector. Stack monitoring system with improved performance guarantee the efficiency and the reliability by considering the characteristic of various scintillation detector. Developed stack monitoring system is evaluated with certified testing equipment and shows excellent performance with respect to the uncertainty of the sensor test results.

Research groups in the field of PET instrumentation are studying time-of-flight(TOF) technology to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of PET images. Scintillation light transport and collection plays an important role in improving the coincidence resolving time(CRT) of PET detector based on a pixelated crystal array. Four crystal arrays were designed by the different optical reflection configuration such as external reflectors and surface treatment on the CRT and compared with the light output, energy resolution and CRT. The design proposed in the study was composed of 8 × 8 LYSO crystal array consisted of 3 × 3 × 15 mm3 pixels. The entrance side was roughened while the other five surfaces were polished. Four sides of all crystal pixels were wrapped with ESR-film, and the entrance surface was covered by Teflon-tape. The design provided an excellent timing resolution of 210 ps and improved the CRT by 16% compared to the conventional method using a polishing treatment and ESR-film. This study provided a method for improving the light output and CRT of a pixelated scintillation crystal-based brain TOF PET detector. The proposed configuration might be an attractive detector design for TOF brain PET requiring fast timing performance with high cost-effectiveness.
