  • The aim of this study is to analyze the current status and performance evaluation systems of faculty in Korean medical colleges and professional graduate medical schools (called medical schools). We developed a research tool based on previous studies and distributed it to 40 medical schools from July to October 2017. The response rate was 100%. We calculated the number of faculty members and analyzed the faculty evaluation systems and awareness according to national and private medical schools. As of 2017, the number of medical faculty in Korea was 11,111 (4,973 faculty were employed by their alma mater, which is 44.76% of the total), with non-medical doctor faculty accounting for 754 of the total. The medical schools reflect research achievements as most important for re-appointment and screening to promote faculty, and the area of education is secondary excepting clinical faculty of private medical schools. However, important issues in the faculty evaluation deal with the relevance of research achievement and the need for qualitative assessment. Some medical schools revised or have been revising the faculty evaluation system in areas such as minimum standards of education for promotion and separation of promotion and tenure review. Opening non-tenure track lines for faculty show positive effects such as increasing the number of positions for hire and easing the financial burdens of medical schools. Downfalls include inconsistencies between the responsibilities and actual practices of tenure not being available and the instability of faculty's status. In conclusion, medical schools need to prepare a faculty evaluation system that fits the position of faculty members and attempt to establish a reasonable compensation system.

  • To cultivate talented people with creative and convergent thinking skills to live in the era of the 4th industrial revolution, the national curriculum of Korea is gradually emphasizing convergence education and software education. To meet the demands of the times, this paper suggests subject-convergent teaching-learning materials for educating core principles of Support Vector Machines, especially targeting elementary learners. Based on analysis of the national curriculum, achievement standards of three subjects are integrated. After printable worksheets for traditional face-to-face classes had developed, they were transformed to online interactive worksheets for non-face-to-face classes. The teaching-learning materials are expected to promote the growth of the learners' academic motivation and knowledge.

  • In this work, a novel first-order shear deformation beam theory is applied to explore the vibration and buckling characteristics of thick functionally graded beams. The material properties are assumed to vary across the thickness direction in a graded form and are estimated by a power-law model. A Fourier series-based solution procedure is implemented to solve the governing equation derived from Hamilton's principle. The obtained results of natural frequencies and buckling loads of functionally graded beam are checked with those supplied in the literature and demonstrate good achievement. Influences of several parameters such as power law index, beam geometrical parameters, modulus ratio and axial load on dynamic and buckling behaviors of FGP beams are all discussed.

  • Purpose: This paper aims to examine the interaction effect of customers relationship management (CRM) on the competitive advantage (CA) of small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) in Yemen. Research design, data and methodology: This study applied a quantitative approach in dealing with the interaction effect of CRM dimensions and SMEs' competitive advantage in Yemen. The research uses a sample of 247 manufacturing SMEs surveyed in Yemen. Results: The results indicate that only three dimensions of CRM, namely (TCM), (KM) and (CRMO), have a significant effect on SMEs' competitive advantage, but not that between (KCF) and SMEs' competitive advantage. Conclusions: The findings of this study offer important insights for owners and managers of SMEs, researchers and policymakers to further understand the effects of CRM on SMEs' competitive advantage. SMEs should also be encouraged to develop their CRM to improve their competitive advantage. Lastly, this study makes several contributions to the literature, the first of which is the provision of evidence concerning the major role of CRM as a dependent variable and competitive advantage as an independent variable. The second contribution pertains to its pioneering status in examining the direct relationship between CRM dimensions and the competitive advantage of SMEs in a Middle Eastern country.
