  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine children's disclosure to parents in different domains of their daily activities. Methods: The participants were 340 children(100 kindergarteners, 120 3rd graders and 120 6th graders in elementary school) and their mothers in Seoul and Gangwon-do, Korea. The data was analyzed with one-way ANOVA, paired t-test, and MANOVA. Results: First, 3rd graders and 6th graders experienced more daily activities than kindergarteners in most domains. Second, 3rd graders disclosed more than kindergarteners and 6th graders in most domains. The response of mothers with 3rd graders was most similar to their children's response about children's disclosure to parents. Third, the reasons for nondisclosure of children were different according to domains. The reasons for nondisclosure of children that mothers perceived were different from those of their children, especially in the school(institute)-related domain. Conclusion/Implications: The results of this study indicated that the aspects of children's disclosure to parents were different according to domains of their daily activities based on developmental stages. Mothers perceived their children's disclosure differently compared to their children. The results suggest that it is necessary to approach children's disclosure to parents based on domains of daily activities and developmental stages.

  • Variables studied in relation to children's school adjustment were child's sex, grade, and ego-resilience maternal employment, parents' age, parents' academic background, mother's emotional expressiveness, and monthly household income and perception of social support. Subjects were 548 4th, 5th and 6th grade students and their mothers. Results showed that children's school adjustment varied by child's grade in school and ego-resilience, parents' age, father's academic background, mother's emotional expressiveness and monthly household income. Children with higher ego-resilience, whose mothers showed more positive emotional expressiveness and who perceived more social support from peers, family, and teachers showed higher adjustment to school life. Among these, support of peers was the most significant variable.

  • Parents' influence on children's development is generally considered essential. This paper attempts to explore the role of AR in preschool education from the perspective of parents, aiming to help parents better understand the impact of children's use of augmented reality in preschool education. The subjects were parents of children in the preschool age range (3-6 years old), and the experimental equipment was AR cognitive cards. In order to extract parents' views on AR, five parents were invited to conduct an experiment with their children using AR cognition cards, and then an open interview survey was conducted. In the second experiment, the answers obtained from the first experiment were sorted out and formed a questionnaire to conduct a closed-book survey. It shows that parents are satisfied with the characteristics of AR to assist their children's learning. At the same time, parents also value technology, usage management and playing environment. AR can stimulate children's learning initiative. Children like to use AR, AR is suitable for learning, make parents satisfied. But even if AR is suitable for learning, parents will control the time their children use it.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify consumption behaviors among children and to examine the differences according to sociodemographic characteristics, factors related to allowance, and parents' consumer socialization function perceived by children. The data were collected from 291 elementary school students in Busan. The results of this study were as follows. First, regarding parents' consumer socialization function perceived by children, the level of child's participation and influence in consumption decision-making was the highest, whereas the level of parent-child communication about consumption was the lowest. Second, consumption behaviors among children were identified into 5 groups: impulsive consumption group, rational allowance management group, friend-dependent purchase group, planned purchase group, and effective goods management group. There were significant difference among them according to child's sex, allowance amount, allowance frequency, parents' guidance about allowance usage, parents' check after allowance usage, and 3 categories of parents' consumer socialization function perceived by children. These results imply that consumer education for parents should be developed and activated to improve consumer socialization function of parents.

Methods: The participants were 687 elementary school students (5th and 6th grades) in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The data were analyzed using SEM. Results: First, parents' and teachers' autonomy support had a direct effect on children's participation in decision-making. Second, parents' and teachers' autonomy support had an indirect effect on children's participation in decision-making through the children's basic psychological needs. Third, children's basic psychological needs mediated the effects of parents' and teachers's autonomy support and children's participation in decision-making. Conclusion: The findings suggest the importance of the mediating effect of children's basic psychological needs, between parents' and teachers' autonomy support and children's participation in decision-making. The findings can be used as an important basis for prospective research and practices for improving children's participation in decision-making.

  • The allergenic food labeling system for 12 foods has been operated in Korean school food service since 2012. This study was conducted to evaluate the food allergy status of Korean elementary school children's and their parents' perceptions of allergenic food labeling system. The parents of school aged(6-9yr olds) children in Gyeongbuk area were recruited to assist in this survey. Surveys were conducted by 404 parents. The prevalence of food allergy was 18.1%(73 students) and about one-half of the food allergic children had a family history of allergies, in particular, maternal family history. The major symptoms were related to skin and the major allergenic foods were mackerel, eggs, milk, wheat, crab and tomatoes. The parents eliminated the allergenic food from diet of 43.8% of the children with food allergy. Participants had an average knowledge score of 68% correct. The average knowledge score was higher for parents with food allergic children than for parents with intact children(p<.05). Over 61% of the respondents were not satisfied with allergenic food labeling system operated in school food service. The requirements for the allergenic food labeling system were the front-of-package labeling, conspicuous description and insert of warning sign. The parents estimated that the most important effect of the allergenic food labeling system was the improvement of psychological and physical health in children with food allergy. Because the only prevention method for food allergy is the restriction of allergenic food, the institutional device to expand the food labeling to unpackaged food as well as packaged food and to make people trust the food labeling should be prepared.

  • This study examined the variables that influence career maturity in elementary school students and tested a hypothetical structural equation model relating the variables to career maturity. The subjects were 2,771 fourth-grade children(1,494 boys and 1,277 girls) who participated in a Korea Youth Panel Survey(KYPS) in 2004. Data were analyzed through frequency, percentages, Pearson's correlations using SPSS 15.0and structural equation modeling with AMOS7.0. The findings are as follows. The proposed model, as revised, demonstrated the effectiveness of an analysis of the structural equation model, and illustrated that the socio-economic status of parents has only an indirect influence on children's career maturity via relationship with parents, children's self-image or academic work. In addition, relationship with parents, children's self-image, and academic work independently affected children's career maturity both directly and indirectly. Based on the causal relationships among these related variables, the findings reveal that the best pathway towards children's career maturity is in the order of socio-economic status, relationship with parents, children's self-image, and children's academic work.

The second and third increasing items were respectively fruits and rice. When environment-friendly agri-products were consumpted and influenced positively through school meals, the consumption of environment-friendly agricultural products will be increased. The expansion of environment-friendly school lunch program cannot bring the consumption expansion of environment-friendly agri-products immediately. However, when the persistent promotion and student's parents confidence on environment-friendly agri-products were accumulated and experienced positive effects through school meals, it will give a positive effect on the consumption of environment-friendly agr-products.

  • The purpose of this research was to analyze the relationship between parents' attitudes toward their children's dental health and dental plaque index. Dental plaque index was obtained through oral examination of 118 children(female 40, male 78) with primary dentition The maintenance status of children's dental health though parents' aids was evaluated by means of questionaire to which 79 persons among the 118 children's parents answered. The results were as follows : 1. In children with primary dentition, toothbrushing together with toothbrushing instruction and continuous reinforcement had decreased plaque accumulation progressively. 2. Dental plaque index before toothbrushing showed that dental plaque was accumulated more in the buccal surfaces of teeth in the maxilla and in the lingual surfaces of teeth in the mandible. It was higher in the posterior teeth than in the anterior teeth and in the maxillary teeth than in the mandibular teeth. 3. Dental plaque index of childern was inversely proportional to the level of education of their parents. 4.
