We demonstrate that high-resolution (~60 nm) near-field fluorescence images of fluorescent nanospheres can be obtained by utilizing the tip-induced fluorescence quenching process. A time-stamped photon counting (TSPC) technique employed enables us to efficiently measure the degree of fluorescence quenching caused by the dielectric or metallic atomic force microscopy tip. We find that the degree of quenching is not only determined by the tip-material but also by the local morphology of the tip. The fringe patterns around individual nanospheres observed are explained in terms of the interference between the excitation field that is directly induced by the laser source, and the scattered excitation field from the tip.
We developed an efficient Monte-Carlo algorithm to solve dust-scattering radiative transfer problems for continuum radiation. The method calculates the scattered intensities for various anisotropic factors ($g_i$) all at once, while actual photon packets are tracked following a scattering phase function given by a single anisotropic factor ($g_0$). The algorithm was tested by applying the method to a dust cloud embedding a star at the cloud center and found to provide accurate results within the statistical fluctuation that is intrinsic in Monte-Carlo simulations. It was found that adopting $g_0$ = 0.4 - 0.5 in the algorithm is most efficient. The method would be efficient in estimating the anisotropic factor of the interstellar dust by comparing the observed data with radiative transfer models.
Emission features formed through Raman scattering with atomic hydrogen provide unique and crucial information to probe the distribution and kinematics of a thick neutral region illuminated by a strong far-ultraviolet radiation source. We introduce a new 3-dimensional Monte-Carlo code to describe the radiative transfer of line photons subject to Raman and Rayleigh scattering with atomic hydrogen. In our Sejong Radiative Transfer through Raman and Rayleigh Scattering (STaRS) code, the position, direction, wavelength, and polarization of each photon is traced until escape. The thick neutral scattering region is divided into multiple cells. Each cell is characterized by its velocity and density, which ensures flexibility of the code in analyzing Raman-scattered features formed in a neutral region with complicated kinematics and density distribution. We are continuously developing STaRS to adopt the absorption and scattering effect by dust. This presentation introduces STaRS and its current state and study.
Accurate knowledge of the distribution of contamination electrons ( which comes from mainly gantry head by Compton scattering, pair production, and tray: henceforth called leptons ) at the surface and in the first centimeters of tissue is essential for the clinical practice of radiation oncology. Such lepton tends to reduce or eliminate the ‘skin-sparing’ advantage of megavoltage photon beam radiotherapy, This information is needed to prescribe a absorbed dose to a skin volume at a few millimeter depth in high energy therapeutic radiation photon beam All experiments were done with 15 MV photon beam from a dual energy linear accelerator (Clinac 1800, Varian). Field size is defined by ranged from 10.0$\times$10.0 to 30.0$\times$30.0 $\textrm{cm}^2$. The absorbed dose and distribution of leptons in therapeutic radiation beam (15 MV) are investigated by means of variable blocked beams of 30.0$\times$30.0 $\textrm{cm}^2$ and dose beam profiles partly removed leptons with a copper plate. A numerous leptons mainly are distributed as shape of broad cone in the central photon beam and leptons path length in the water are shorter than 2.5 cm because of the leptons energy having around 3.0 MeV. These results clearly appears that the subtraction of leptons from the total depth dose curve not only lower the absolute dose in the buildup region and surface dose, it also causes a shift of d$_{max}$ to a deeper depth.
Electrocardiogram-gated single photon omission computed tomography (SPECT) provides valuable information in the assessment of both myocardial perfusion and ventricular function. Tl-201 is a suboptimal isotope for gating. Tl-201 images are more blurred compared with Tc-99m tracers due to the increased amount of scattered photons and use of a smooth filter. The average myocardial count densities are approximately one-half those of conventional technetium tracers. However, Tl-201 is still widely used because of its well-established utility for assessing myocardial perfusion, viability and risk stratification. Gated SPECT with Tl-201 enables us to assess both post-stress and rest left ventricular volume and function. Previous studies with gated Tl-201 SPECT measurements of ejection fraction (EF), end-diastolic volume (EDV), end-systolic volume (ESV) have shown high correlation with first-pass radionuclide angiography, gated blood pool scan, Tc-99m-MIBI gated SPECT, contrast ventriculography, echocardiography, and 3-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging. However, problems related to these studies include few agreement data of EDV and ESV, use of a reference method that is likely to have the same systemic errors (gated Tc-99m-MIBI SPECT), and other technical factors related to the count density of gated SPECT. With optimization of gated imaging protocols and more validation studies, gated Tl-201 SPECT would be an accurate method to provide perfusion and function information in patients with coronary artery disease.
Measurements of the peripheral dose were performed using a 2D array ion chamber and solid water phantom for a $10{\times}10cm$, source-surface distance (SSD) 90cm, 6 and 15MV photon beam at depths of 0.5cm, 5cm through $d_{max}$. Measurements of peripheral dose at 0.5cm and 5cm depths were performed from 1cm to 5cm outside of fields for the dynamic wedge and physical wedge $15^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$. For 6MV photon beam, the average peripheral dose of dynamic wedge were lower by 1.4% and 0.1% than that of physical wedge For 15MV photon beam, the peripheral dose of dynamic wedge were lower by maximum 1.6% that of physical wedge. The results showed that dynamic wedge can reduce scattered dose of clinical organ close to the field edge. The wedge systems produce different peripheral dose that should be considered in properly choosing a wedge system for clinical use.
In recent years, the MOSFET dosimeter has been widely used in various medical applications such as dose verification in radiation therapeutic and diagnostic applications. The MOSFET dosimeter is, however, mainly made of silicon and shows some energy dependence for low energy Photons. Therefore, the MOSFET dosimeter tends to overestimate the dose for low energy scattered photons in a phantom. This study determines the correction factors to compensate these dependences of the MOSFET dosimeter in ATOM phantom. For this, we first constructed a computational model of the ATOM phantom based on the 3D CT image data of the phantom. The voxel phantom was then implemented in a Monte Carlo simulation code and used to calculate the energy spectrum of the photon field at each of the MOSFET dosimeter locations in the phantom. Finally, the correction factors were calculated based on the energy spectrum of the photon field at the dosimeter locations and the pre-determined energy and directional dependence of the MOSFET dosimeter. Our result for $^{60}Co$ and $^{137}Cs$ photon fields shows that the correction factors are distributed within the range of 0.89 and 0.97 considering all the MOSFET dosimeter locations in the phantom.

Purpose: This study investigates peripheral dose from physical wedge and dynamic wedge system on a multileaf collimator (MLC) equipment linear accelerator. Materials and Methods: Measurments were performed using a 2D array ion chamber and solid water phantom for a 10$\times$10 cm, source-surface distance (SSD) 90 cm, 6 and 15 MV photon beam at depths of 0.5 cm, 5 cm through dmax. Measurments of peripheral dose at 0.5 cm and 5 cm depths were performed from 1 cm to 5 cm outside of fields for the dynamic wedge and physical wedge 15$^\circ$, 45$^\circ$. Dose profiles normalized to dose at the maximum depth. Results: At 6 MV photon beam, the average peripheral dose of dynamic wedge were lower by 1.4% and 0.1%. At 15 MV photon beam, the peripheral dose of dynamic wedge were lower by maximum 1.6%. Conclusion: This study showed that dynamic wedge can reduce scattered dose of clinical organ close to the field edge and reduced treatment time. The wedge systems produce significantly different peripheral dose that should be considered in properly choosing a wedge system for clinical use.
There is necessity for making a smaller and more sensitive detector in small field sizes. This report assesses the suitability of metal-loaded thermoluminescent dosimeters for this purpose. Measurements were performed in the 6 MV photon and 6 MeV electron beams of a medical linear accelerator with LiF thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLD-100) embedded in solid water phantom. TLD-100 chips(surface area 3.2 $\times$ 3.2 $\textrm{mm}^2$) loaded with a metal plate(Tin or gold respectively) were used to enhance dose readings to TLD-100. Surface dose was measured for field size 10 $\times$ 10 $\textrm{cm}^2$ and 100 em SSD. Measurements have been made of the enhanced signal intensity and good linearity for absorbed dose with each metal. Using a 1 mm each metal on TLD-l00 in the beam increased the surface dose to 14% and 56% respectively for 6MV photon. In the case of 6 MeV electron, gold plate enhanced the TL response to 13%, but there is no difference for tin plate. The specific dose response of TLD-100 with thin metal plate increases with electron concentration of metal film, this is most likely due to increased electron scattered from the additional material with electron density higher than TLD-100. This emphasizes the role of TL dosimeters with metal as amplified dosimeters for therapeutic high energy x-ray beams. Due to the enhanced dose reading of TLD-100 with metal plate, it could be possible to develop smaller TL dosimeter with high sensitivity.
A prompt gamma-ray neutron activation (PGNA) system was simulated by the Monte Carlo N-Particle transport code (MCNP-4A) to estimate the level at which the scattered photon fluence rate, the absolute efficiency of the HPGe-detector, the volume of the concrete sample and the $^{35}$ /Cl(n, ${\gamma}$) reaction rate in this sample contribute to the count rate in the NaCl concentration measurement. The n- ${\gamma}$ fluence rates at the ST-2 beam tube exit of the HANARO reactor were used as input data, and the GAMMA-X type HPGe detector was modeled to tally 1.1649 MeV ${\gamma}$ -rays emitted from the $^{35}$ Cl(n, ${\gamma}$) reaction in the concrete sample. For three cylindrical concrete samples of 13.8, 46.8 and 157.1 ㎤ volumes, respectively, the relations between the NaCl weight fractions of 0.1, 1, 2 and 5 % in each of the concrete samples and the 1.1 649 MeV pulses created in the HPGe detector model were studied. As a result, it was found that the count rate at the same NaCl concentration nearly depends on the volume of the samples in a simulated condition of the same NaCl concentration samples, and that the linearities of the NaCl concentration calibration curves were reasonable in the narrow range of the NaCl weight fraction.
