흉부X선촬영시(胸部X線撮影時) 산란선(散亂線)이 화질(畵質)과 피폭선량(被曝線量)에 미치는 영향(影響) (Effects of the Scattered Radiation on Image Quality and Exposure Dose in Chest Radiography)

  • To investigate relationships between image guality and exposure dose, Chest X-ray films were evaluated for the following points:how much scattered radiation can affect reduction in image quality and can be permissible diagnostically? For this purpose using a test charts and Burger's phantoms. The visual evaluation of their X-ray films and the measurements of scattered radiation were carried out. The dose of scattered radiation ranging from 20 to 25% was found to be for nothing in any diagnostic obstacle. In this range, surface doses were low of 17, 21, and $25{\mu}Gy$ for The thickness of the chest of 15, 20 and 25 cm respectively. Comparison of these high voltage X-ray films with low voltage ones showed a surface dose rate of 1:11.7. Therefore, X-ray quality, photosensitive materials(film and screen) and grid should be selected very carefully for the purpose of reduction in exposure dose.

산란선이 간접변환방식 엑스선 검출기의 신호 및 노이즈 특성에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Scatter X-ray Signal and Noise Characteristics of Indirect Conversion-Type Detector for Radiography)

  • 디지털 래디오그라피 이미징 시스템으로 환자의 병변 진단에 있어 도움을 줄 수도 있으나 인체에 입사되는 엑스선이 물질과의 상호작용으로 인해 산란선이 발생되면 엑스선 영상의 신호 및 노이즈 특성에 영향을 미치게 된다. 인체를 폴리메틸메타아크릴레이트(polymethyl methacrylate, PMMA)로 간주하고 PMMA에서 발생되는 산란선이 엑스선 영상에 미치는 특성을 관찰하기 위해 공간 영역에서 신호 및 노이즈 분석뿐만 아니라 공간주파수 영역에서 노이즈-파워 스펙트럼(noise-power spectrum, NPS) 그리고 제로주파수에서 양자검출효율(detective quantum efficiency, DQE)을 계산하였다. PMMA 두께 증가에 따라 신호는 감소, 노이즈는 증가하였으며 전반적인 공간주파수에서 노이즈-파워 스펙트럼의 저하가 확인되었다. 이러한 특성을 바탕으로 제로주파수 성능 또한 저하되는 결과를 보였다. 간접변환방식 검출기의 산란선에 의한 제로주파수 성능을 보다 정량적으로 분석하기 위해 몬테칼로 시뮬레이션과의 비교분석이 이루어져야 할 것이다.

X선 진단장치의 고압정류방식이 대조도 향상에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Contrast Improvement on High Voltage Rectification Type of X-ray Diagnostic Apparatus)

  • 본 연구는 X선 진단장치의 고압정류방식이 그리드 성능을 측정하는 선택도(selectivity)와 대조도 향상능력(contrast improvement ability : K factor)에 미치는 영향을 분석하고자 산란선 함유율을 측정하였다. 정류방식이 서로 다른 X선발생장치를 대상으로 각 장치의 관전압과, 관전류량을 측정하여 출력선량의 정확도를 측정 및 교정한 후 각 장치별 노출조건을 동일하게 설정하고 형광량계를 이용하여 아크릴을 투과한 X선의 산란선 함유율을 측정하였다. Grid 미사용 시 피사체를 투과한 X선의 산란선 함유율 측정 결과는 단상정류방식장치에서 가장 낮은 함유율(34.158%)이 측정되었고, 인버터 정류방식(37.043%)과 삼상24피크 정류방식(37.447%)은 산란선 함유율이 증가하였다. 각 장치들의 산란선 함유율 차이는 최저 0.404%에서 최고 3.289%의 차이를 보였다. 8:1 Gird 사용 시 피사체를 투과한 X선의 산란선 함유율을 측정한 결과는 단상정류방식장치에서 가장 낮은 함유율(18.258%)로 측정되었고, 인버터정류방식(25.502%)과 삼상24피크정류방식에서 산란선 함유율(24.217%)이 증가하였다. 그리드 선택도에 따라 단상정류방식과 정전압(인버터와 삼상24피크)정류방식에서 산란선함유율의 차이는 최저 1.285%에서 최고 7.244%의 차이를 보였다. 통계분석 결과 단상정류방식 및 정전압정류방식에서 대조도 향상계수(K factor)에서도 유의한 차이를 보였다. 결론적으로 그리드 선택도와 대조도 향상계수는 정전압정류방식보다는 단상전파방식에서 모두 증가하여 그리드의 사용으로 선택도 향상과 대조도의 개선효과가 증가함을 알 수 있었다.

Restoration of Chest X-ray by Kalman Filter

  • A grid was sandwiched between two cascaded imaging plates. Using a fan-beam X-ray tube and a single exposure scheme, the two imaging plates, respectively, recorded grid-less and grid type information of the object. Referring to the mathematical model of the Grid-less and grid technique, it was explained that the collected components whereas that of imaging plates with grid was of high together with large scattered components whereas that of imaging plate with grid was of low and suppressed scattered components. Based on this assumption and using a Gaussian convolution kernel representing the effect of scattering, the related data of the imaging plates were simulated by computer. These observed data were then employed in the developed post-processing estimation and restoration (kalman-filter) algorithms and accordingly, the quality of the resultant image was effectively improved.

  • Authors investigated an influence of x-ray tube voltage on x-ray quality and dose with using objects of various thickness, and obtained the results as follows: 1. Radiographic effects were influenced by tube voltages and objects. 2. Dose decrement rates hade more influence upon primary-rays than total x-rays at lower tube voltages. 3. The quality of transmitted x-rays was affected by tube voltages and thickness of objects. 4. Scattered-ray contents were proportional to tube voltages with using grid.

  • Side-direction scattered dose from various radiation shielding materials was measured at 50cm distance from the central beam of primary ray by used several kinds of added filters for a x-ray deep therapeutic installation, the obtained results were as follows : 1. Dose rate by tube voltage was more increased at heavy filtration than light filtration. 2. Scattered doses produced by constant tube voltage in all shielding materials were decreased at heavier filtration. 3. Scattered doses produced by constant shielding material in all tube voltages were decreased at heavier filtration.

몬테카를로 방법을 이용한 슬릿형태 구조물의 차폐능력 평가 (Shielding Capability Evaluation of Slit-shaped Structure for Scattered X-ray using Monte Carlo Method)

  • 의료종사자의 피폭선량을 줄이기 위한 최근 연구에서, 방사선이 산란될 때 발생하는 광전효과를 이용하여 방사선치료실 입구에서의 선량을 줄이는 방법이 제안되었다. 이 방법은 특히 저에너지 광자에 효과적이기 때문에 본 연구에서는 몬테카를로 시뮬레이션을 이용하여 슬릿형태 구조물의 일반촬영실 산란 엑스선에 대한 차폐성능을 평가하였다. 두께 2 mm, 폭 50 mm, 길이 900 mm인 판을 2 mm 간격으로 수평 적재하는 형태의 슬릿형태 구조물은 알루미늄에 비해 철 또는 납으로 만드는 경우 차폐효과가 뛰어났다. 재질을 철로 한정한 경우 선원과 관심구역 사이에서 결정된 구조물의 설치위치는 차폐효과와 무관했으며, 판의 폭은 차폐효과에 비례했다. 폭 50 mm 철판을 사용한 경우 산란선이 직접 발생하는 바닥 및 환자의 높이를 제외하면 약 99.9% 또는 그 이상의 차폐효과가 있었다.

X-Rays through the Looking Glass: Mobile Imaging Dosimetry and Image Quality of Suspected COVID-19 Patients

  • Background: This paper aims to evaluate the clinical utility and radiation dosimetry, for the mobile X-ray imaging of patients with known or suspected infectious diseases, through the window of an isolation room. The suitability of this technique for imaging coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients is of particular focus here, although it is expected to have equal relevance to many infectious respiratory disease outbreaks. Materials and Methods: Two exposure levels were examined, a "typical" mobile exposure of 100 kVp/1.6 mAs and a "high" exposure of 120 kVp/5 mAs. Exposures of an anthropomorphic phantom were made, with and without a glass window present in the beam. The resultant phantom images were provided to experienced radiographers for image quality evaluation, using a Likert scale to rate the anatomical structure visibility. Results and Discussion: The incident air kerma doubled using the high exposure technique, from 29.47 µGy to 67.82 µGy and scattered radiation inside and outside the room increased. Despite an increase in beam energy, high exposure technique images received higher image quality scores than images acquired using lower exposure settings. Conclusion: Increased scattered radiation was very low and can be further mitigated by ensuring surrounding staff are appropriately distanced from both the patient and X-ray tube. Although an increase in incident air kerma was observed, practical advantages in infection control and personal protective equipment conservation were identified. Sites are encouraged to consider the use of this technique where appropriate, following the completion of standard justification practices.

MONTE CARLO SIMULATION OF COMPTONIZATION IN A SPHERICAL SHELL GEOMETRY

  • We present the calculation of X -ray spectra produced through Compton scattering of soft X-rays by hot electrons in the spherical shell geometry, using fully relativistic Monte Carlo simulation. With this model, we show that the power-law component, which has been observed in the low luminosity state of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), is explained physically. From a spectral. analysis, we find that spectral hardness is mainly due to the relative contribution of scattered component. In addition, we see that Wi en spectral features appear when the plasma is optically thick, especially in the high energy range, $E{\gtrsim}100keV$. We suggest that after a number of scattering the escape probability approaches an asymptotic form depending on the geometry of the scattering medium rather than on the initial photon spectrum.
