소독멸균 방법에 따른 초음파 스케일링 팁에 부착된 세균의 양상 (Morphological aspect of the attached bacteria by the sterilization method of the ultrasonic scaling tip)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the bacterial morphology attached on ultrasonic scaler tips using no cleansing solution, alcohol cotton, liquid chemical disinfecting agent, and autoclave method. Methods: Scaling tip was applied to the mouth and the ultrasonic scaler tips were assigned to four groups. Group 1 was control group with no cleansing solution. Group 2 was treated with alcohol cotton. Group 3 was treated with 2% green Y-Na solution in liquid chemical disinfecting agent, and Group 4 was sterilized by autoclave method. Live bacteria were observed by phase contrast microscopy. The scanning electron microscopy(SEM) revealed the morphological characteristics of scaler surface. The type of attached bacteria were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 program. The data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA) and Tukey's post-hoc test. Results: The types of sterilization methods had influences on the bacterial viability. The numbers of cocci, bacilli, spiral form bacteria, and filamentous bacteria was observed in $89.00{\pm}3.60%$, $29.67{\pm}3.51%$, $3.33{\pm}0.57%$ and $1.67{\pm}0.57%$ in control group, $31.67{\pm}3.51%$, $63.33{\pm}4.04%$, $2.00{\pm}1.00%$ and $1.67{\pm}0.57%$ in alcohol cotton group, $69.67{\pm}4.50%$, $12.33{\pm}2.51%$, 0% and 0% in liquid chemical disinfecting agent group, and 0.0%, 0.0%, 0.0% and 0.0% in autoclave method group. The clean surface of ultrasonic scaler tip was shown on SEM by autoclave method. Conclusions: The most effective sterilization method of ultrasonic scaler tip was the autoclave method. Autoclave method is the most effective sterilization method and can reduce the cross-infection in the dental clinic.

Comparison of the effect of hand instruments, an ultrasonic scaler, and an erbium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet laser on root surface roughness of teeth with periodontitis: a profilometer study

  • Purpose: The present study aimed to measure root surface roughness in teeth with periodontitis by a profilometer following root planning with ultrasonic and hand instruments with and without erbium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Er:YAG) laser irradiation. Methods: Sixty single-rooted maxillary and mandibular teeth, extracted because of periodontal disease, were collected. The crowns and apices of the roots were cut off using a diamond bur and water coolant. The specimens were mounted in an acrylic resin block such that a plain root surface was accessible. After primary evaluation and setting a baseline, the samples were divided into 4 groups. In group 1, the samples were root planned using a manual curette. The group 2 samples were prepared with an ultrasonic scaler. In group 3, after scaling with hand instrumentation, the roots were treated with a Smart 1240D plus Er:YAG laser and in group 4, the roots were prepared with ultrasonic scaler and subsequently treated with an Er:YAG laser. Root surface roughness was then measured by a profilometer (MahrSurf M300+RD18C system) under controlled laboratory conditions at a temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ and 41% humidity. The data were analyzed statistically using analysis of variance and a t-test (P<0.05). Results: Significant differences were detected in terms of surface roughness and surface distortion before and after treatment. The average reduction of the surface roughness after treatment in groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 was 1.89, 1.88, 1.40, and 1.52, respectively. These findings revealed no significant differences among the four groups. Conclusions: An Er:YAG laser as an adjunct to traditional scaling and root planning reduces root surface roughness. However, the surface ultrastructure is more irregular than when using conventional methods.

산재환자의 주관적 구강건강상태와 보건태도가 구강건강 영향지수(OHIP)에 미치는 영향 (The effect of subjective perception and attitude of oral health on the oral health impact profile in industrial accident injury patients)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the oral health impact profile (OHIP) in the industrial accident injury patients, and the effect of subjective perception and attitude of oral health on the oral health-related quality of life in industrial injury patients. Methods : A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 496 industrial accident injury patients from October 29 to November 30, 2013. Data were analyzed using SPSS ver 20.0 program for chi-square test, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results : The OHIP-14 was higher oral health-related quality of life in young people, women, highly educated persons, and those having high income and frequent scaling service. The subjective perception and attitude of oral health was closely correlated to the OHIP-14. The factors influencing on the oral health-related quality of life were the subjective perception and attitude toward oral health. Conclusions : It is necessary to emphasize the oral health promotion program for industrial injury patients. The government should pay more attention to the policy for the improvement of the oral health of industrial accident injury patients in the future.

Intentional passive eruption combined with scaling and root planing of teeth with moderate chronic periodontitis and traumatic occlusion

  • Purpose: The aim of this clinical trial was to explore the impact of intentional passive eruption (IPE) using occlusal reduction on the periodontal parameters of teeth with moderate chronic periodontitis and traumatic occlusion. Methods: This study was performed on 40 teeth from 16 subjects. At baseline, 4 weeks after initial periodontal treatment, and 6 months after IPE, clinical and radiographic examinations were performed. The 20 teeth in the test group underwent IPE using occlusal reduction, whereas the 20 control teeth did not undergone occlusal reduction. Results: All the periodontal parameters were improved by the initial periodontal treatment. The teeth in the test group showed a significantly greater decrease in pocket depth, tooth mobility, and marginal bone loss than did the control group (P<0.05), but there were no significant changes in the attachment level. Significantly greater improvements in all the parameters were observed in the test group after 6 months of IPE compared to 4 weeks after the initial periodontal treatment (P<0.05). Conclusions: Within the limits of this study, performing initial periodontal therapy combined with IPE using occlusal reduction was shown to be very simple and effective. Moreover, IPE would be helpful in improving periodontal parameters.

Comparisons of Fit Factors Between Two Quantitative Fit Testers (PortaCount vs. MT)

  • This study evaluated the consistency between two quantitative fit test devices with different methods of ambient aerosol counting. Three types of respirators (N95, half mask, and full facepiece) were worn by 50 participants (male, n = 25; female, n = 25), PortaCount (Pro+ 8038) and MT (05U) were connected to one probe to one mask, and fit factors (FFs) were measured simultaneously with the original and modified protocols. As a result of comparing MT FFs with PortaCount FFs as references and by applying for the pass/fail criteria (FF = 100), the consistency between the two devices for half masks and full facepieces was very high. N95 was somewhat weaker than the two type of respirators in the consistency; however, the correlation between the two devices was very strong (p < 0.0001). The results showed that an FF of 100 as measured by PortaCount was likely to be measured as 75 by the MT. Therefore, when performing the fit test for N95 using the MT and pass level of FF 100, a certain level of adjustment is necessary, whether end-user or putting a scaling factor by manufacturer.

중진지역에 적합한 액상화 평가 생략기준 및 지진규모 보정계수에 관한 연구 (A Study on Magnitude Scaling Factors and Screening Limits of Liquefaction Potential Assessment in Moderate Earthquake Regions)

  • 기존의 액상화 평가법은 대부분 미국, 일본, 그리고 유럽과 같이 지진 발생빈도가 높고 그로 인한 액상화 피해가 빈번한 국가에서 주도적으로 연구되어왔다. 이런 지역적 특성을 토대로 개발된 액상화 평가방법들은 높은 지진규모(M=7.5)에 바탕을 두고 있다. 국내의 경우, 1997년 실제적인 내진 연구가 시작된 이래 액상화 평가의 구체적 규정은 항만시설의 내진설계 표준서(1999)에 언급된 바 있으나 이는 문헌연구를 통해 제시된 것으로 실제적이지 못하다. 그러므로, 국내 적합한 설계기준을 작성하기 위해서는 지진피해자료의 부족을 국내 지반을 대상으로 한 동적실내시험을 통하는 것이 바람직하며, 일반적인 정현하중 진동시험 보다 실제 지진하중 재하 시험이 훨씬 효과적일 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 실제 지진파 고유의 특성을 적용한 진동삼축 시험을 통하여 상대밀도와 세립분함유량의 변화에 따른 액상화 저항강도를 산정하였다. 실험결과를 국내의 대표적인 항만지역의 지진응답 해석 결과와 비교 분석하고 중진지역에 적합한 액상화 평가의 생략기준을 제시하였다. 또한 실제 지진하중 삼축실험 결과를 이용하여 국내 여건에 적합한 지진규모 보정계수를 제안하였다.

Fingerprint Minutiae Matching Algorithm using Distance Histogram of Neighborhood

  • Fingerprint verification is being adopted widely to provide positive identification with a high degree of confidence in all practical areas. This popular usage requires reliable methods for matching of these patterns. To meet the latest expectations, the paper presents a pair wise distance histogram method for fingerprint matching. Here, we introduced a randomized algorithm which exploits pair wise distances between the pairs of minutiae, as a basic feature for match. The method undergoes two steps for completion i.e. first it performs the matching locally then global matching parameters are calculated in second step. The proposed method is robust to common problems that fingerprint matching faces, such as scaling, rotation, translational changes and missing points etc. The paper includes the test of algorithm on various randomly generated minutiae and real fingerprints as well. The results of the tests resemble qualities and utility of method in related field.

On a Cepstral Pitch Alteration Technique for Prosody Control in the Speech Synthesis System with High Quality

  • In the area of the speech synthesis techniques, the waveform coding methods maintain the intelligibility and naturalness of synthetic speech. In order to apply the waveform coding techniques to synthesis by rule, we must be able to alter the pitches of synthetic speech. In this paper, we propose a new pitch altering method that compensates phase distortion of the cepstral pitch alteration method with time scaling method in the time domain. This method can remove some spectrum distortion which is occurred in conjunction point between the waveforms. For performance test the spectrum distortion rate was used as objective criterion and the MOS(Mean Opinion Score) was used as subjective criterion. As a result, the spectrum distortion and MOS are obtained by 0.66% and 3.9, respectively.

노후 콘크리트 포장 파손에 대한 현장조사 및 실내시험 방법 (Methodology of Field Investigation and Laboratory Test for Distresses of Old Concrete Pavements)

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to suggest a specific investigation guideline to decide priority of repairing old concrete pavements that pile up substantially. METHODS : In this study, a principle of division of homogeneous sections was proposed to reflect the characteristics of the pavement reasonably in the specific investigation results. In addition, a checklist and guideline of field investigation were suggested for the old concrete pavement sections, which require inspection toward their durability and structural performance. Furthermore, the items of laboratory test necessary to the old concrete pavement were suggested based on the existing laboratory test considering characteristics of the old concrete pavement. The present condition of the old concrete pavement could be analyzed by the test results. RESULTS : A method of division of homogeneous sections suitable for the specific investigation of the old concrete pavement was suggested. The proportions of distress severity of pavement sections were compared by distress type to figure out the present state of the old concrete pavement. Scaling, durability cracking (or alkali-silica reaction), and longitudinal spalling were selected as the most severe distress types. The detailed positions of the sections were also suggested. The checklist of the specific investigation was categorized by field survey and laboratory test, and its evaluation criteria were proposed. The three types of the sections of durability cracking (or alkali-silica reaction), bridge connection, and asphalt overlay were selected as the sections of the field survey. The compressive strength, void structure, and chloride penetration depth were suggested as the items of the laboratory test. CONCLUSIONS : A fundamental level of the guideline was suggested in this study to resolve the problem of old concrete pavement. Appropriate guidelines related to the repair of the old concrete pavement should be provided by performing additional research efforts.

쇄빙선박에 작용하는 빙저항 추정식 고찰 (A Review on Ice Resistance Prediction Formulas for Icebreaking Vessels)

  • In this paper, one of the widely-used ice resistance prediction methods, introduced by Spencer(1992) of the Institute for Ocean Technology, Canada, is reviewed. Spencer's component-based scaling system for ship-ice model tests is analysed to estimate the ice resistance of various types of icebreaking vessels (Canadian MV Arctic, Terry Fox, R-Class icebreaker, US icebreakers Polar Star and Healy, Russian SA-15 cargo ships, Japanese PM Teshio and a model ship). The general form and the non-dimensional coefficients in ice resistance prediction formula are obtained using the published ice model test and full-scale sea trial data. The applicability of Spencer's method on R-Class icebreaker is discussed to estimate ice resistance for the larger icebreaking cargo vessels. Additional parameters to account for the difference in hull forms of icebreakers and cargo vessels are recommended to be included in the Spencer's original ice resistance prediction formula.
